Stefan G. Bucher is a good egg. After working as a freelance illustrator in his native Germany, he moved to California and earned his degree from Art Center College of Design in 1996. Following graduation he signed up for a tour of duty as an art director at Wieden & Kennedy. But he wasn’t cut out for a career in advertising or for life in Oregon. He moved back to Los Angeles in 1998 and has been working to spread the gospel of 344 ever since.

He is responsible for CD packages for everyone from indie artists to Whitney Houston and Sting. In 2001 he designed the five and a half pound “American Photography 17” annual for which he received a D&AD Silver Award for “Most Outstanding Complete Book Design.” In September of 2004 the Art Directors Club (New York) selected him as one of 35 outstanding creatives age 30 and under for their biennial “Young Guns” exhibit.

He is the author and designer of “All Access—The Making of Thirty Extraordinary Graphic Designers.” The book is a guided tour of the life stories of 30 of the world’s best graphic designers and includes an exclusive look at their early designs.

From 2003 to 2007 he created the illustrated column “ink & circumstance” for STEP Magazine. He has recently produced gratuitously ambitious work for David Hockney, and movie director Tarsem, and designed the “Echo Park Time Travel Mart” for Dave Eggers’ 826 Valencia, a network of tutoring centers for at-need children and teens.

Starting in November of 2006 he filmed himself blowing ink on a piece of paper, making each random blot into a monster. He linked the result to his blog and, for the next 99 days, posted a new monster every night. He found himself the seed crystal for a community of monster obsessives that used his drawings as an excuse to tell stories. His book about the experience—“100 Days of Monsters”—is on sale now, while cousins of the Daily Monster are currently appearing on the relaunched classic children's TV show "The Electric Company" on Public Television.

His upcoming book “The Graphic Eye — Photographs by International Graphic Designers” will be in stores this fall.

He is a frequent and impassioned speaker on the topic of life, love, and graphic design, at schools, design associations, and major corporations such as Starbucks and Target.
