With Christmas just around the corner I thought I would share a few more vintage Christmas cards with you. I have a particular liking for anything by Rene Cloke (left) or brightly-coloured examples like those that follow.
Most of the cards I buy cost less than a pound (USD 1.25), but if you want to splash out you should look for hand-painted ones by famous artists, such as Kate Greenaway and Walter Crane.
This hearty greeting comes to wish you everything that's good, and though I cannot shake your hand today, yet may we meet in kindest thought and wishes for each other.
A Merry Christmas may you see both joy and fortune call,
a Happy Year, and may it be the happiest one of all.
I send my love and wish that you a jolly time may see,
with girls and boys and games and toys and all in harmony.
I hope these toys will bring you pleasure in many a different way,
and be a glad beginning to a Happy Christmas Day.
Wishing you a bright and cherry Christmas!'Tis Christmas once again, and greetings I am sending,May you and yours this Christmastide, a joyous time be spending.
It's Christmas! I'm so excited - and to send you a card I'm delighted, so I'll put on my coat and I'll put on my hat, and I'll run to the pillar box jolly and fat, and post the card, which tells you true what a Happy Christmas I'm wishing for you. I will be taking a short break now, but I would like to thank everyone who takes the time to visit and comment on my blog. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a very happy New Year.
Christmas wishes and love from Barbara, Terry and all the family xxx

When we think of Christmas cards, we usually picture images of holly, robins, angels and candles, or snow-covered cottages with sledging children, Nativity scenes with visiting Wise Men, or benevolent Santas with sacks full of presents. Very rarely, I imagine, do we picture a summer woodland scene features lounging female figures in classical dress and a lyre-playing cherub.

I've been kinda busy I guess, finishing up some projects and trying not to panic about the holidays. Let's get started with the 'catch up', shall we?
The finished SKOR bar. This is with its new owner and is being framed as we speak. (And I'm so glad I bought a few extra of these for reference, which are still in the cupboard, because I just read an article about how there's a chocolate shortage looming on the horizon - !!!!)
I did this with . . . trying to remember . . . Prismacolors and Polychromos I think, on Stonehenge paper. I know that sounds bad that I can't remember, but when you have as many brands of pencils as I do, and they get cleaned up and put away after each project, its easy to forget.) This is 5" x 10".
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Then I did this house and people portrait for a nice family who wanted to remember their vacation together in France. This one required some photoshopping to get the people from different photos all looking out the correct windows in this photo before I could start the drawing.
On this one I used Prismacolors and Cretacolor Soho Urban Artist pencils. The Sohos are pretty hard, and had the exact right shade of blue grey I needed for those shutters. I also used a lot of their Lamp Black for shadows, which is really a grey. I don't always mix brands of pencils, but do when I need a certain color, or need something soft or harder to do a specific task.
The original of this was 11" x 15". And it was going to Buffalo, NY, which had 5' of snow today!!! I feel like I should have wrapped it in a blanket or something.

I'm really honored to be included in Katherine Tyrrell's new book,
Sketching 365 (or if you're in the US, its called
Drawing 365). She has a
Facebook page dedicated to it.
I can't remember now which pieces of mine she asked for, and I don't have a copy yet to check. But I'm in there, somewhere, along with a whole bunch of other super talented drawers. Thanks Katherine!!

And then . . . dun, dun, DUNNNNNN . . .
CHRISTMAS
(insert those Psycho screeching violin noises here)
Every year I say "I'm not making cards! I hate making cards! I'm not making them!" and then I do.
Some of these are newish, some are oldies but goodies, image-wise. I found these fun blank cards with ornamental embossed edges, which I thought were perfect for festive cards. They all have fancy deckle edged envelopes. And they're all in
the shop.
I have a couple other pieces I want to make into cards, but we'll see. One is square, so I ordered square envelopes, and when they arrived yesterday I realized I ordered the wrong size! (note to self: never order stuff before the coffee has fully kicked in) I should probably just work on my new card for this year, and some other projects that are pending.
Its raining here, which is great for our drought. But of course the kitties are all out of whack because they can't go outside as much (translation: they're all climbing the walls in here). They have catnip and snacks and 500 places to perch and sleep, so they're OK. Which reminds me - I need to order their new catnip cigars for Christmas (shhh, don't tell them). Seriously, if you want a really amazing cat nip toy, go here and get these -
Hot Cat Treats.
Stay warm!!

Didn’t get a doodle done today because I was finishing up my holiday cards. (Yeah, it’s tradition to be this late, thank you very much!)
So although it’s a bit of a cheat I decided to repost this from a couple of years ago. Thought it might be appropriate.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
I love holiday cards. I love getting them, but most of all I like making them.
At least it starts out that way.
There’s the initial concept. Fun!
Sketching it up. Fun!
Drawing, painting, tweaking. Fun! Fun! Fun!
But then, there is the whole standing in line at the post office because I absolutely must have those special snowman stamps.
Followed by an attempt at addressing the cards and the subsequent admitting to people that I wrote their address on a scrap piece of paper last year and my cat batted it under the couch and apparently a spider drug it away to it’s nest, so could you pleeeeeeease give me your address for the fifteenth time… and I promise I’ll key it safely into my iPhone this time!
Couple that with the fact that I waited until pretty much the last minute, even though I promised last year and the year before that and the year… ok, the past ten years that I would start in August.
Before you know it, I’ve got a holiday card meltdown on my hands.
Does any of this sound familiar? Am I alone with this?
Anywho, fun? Not so much.
But despite the griping and moaning, after all is said and done, the truth is, it’s just not Christmas until I’ve sent off all my cards and, of course, I receive that very first card in the mail, be it Christmas, Hanukkah or Festivus (I’m still waiting for my first Kwanza card.)
I just love holiday cards!
It’s tradition! Every bit of it, from fun to meltdown and I hope it never goes away!
Now get yer elfin shoes over here to see what the other doodlers have in store for you!

I've made a few Christmas cards for
the shop.
I know, its still early. But now is when people starting thinking about these. So I figured I'd do a few, in case the early birds stop by.
You've probably seen this art before. Or maybe not. None of it is new (boy, how bad am I at selling myself here?). Let's see if I can rephrase that ~
"I've chosen some of my favorite Christmas-y images and made them into beautiful greeting cards!". There, that's a little better.
I'm feeling the beginning of something 'cold-like' hovering around tonight, something that requires aspirin and fluids. (Fluids. That's an odd word, isn't it?) My fluids of choice in this situation are lemon-ginger-echinacea juice and plain water. Although if someone were to fix me a hot toddy of some sort I'm sure I could be persuaded.
So anyways, that might explain my poor efforts in enthusiastically presenting my card-making endeavor.
I also think all the election hoopla left me a little worn. Did you feel that way too? The endless TV commercials and Facebook rantings and then the actual election-night stress. Its a wonder the President doesn't have a nervous collapse afterwards. I hope they at least let him sleep in a bit this morning (the day after).
I'm also trying to get used the time change. I want to go to bed at 6:00 pm now.
There are a lot of odd bits of art happening around here. Well, they're not odd, really, just a little of this, and a little of that.
Some of it is picture book art, and some of it is food. And today while out shopping I found inspiration for a new series, and bought a few things, so am excited about that. (No, I'm not going to tell you what it is yet, you have to wait.)
I hope all of you are well, and weren't caught in that awful Sandy disaster. I'm feeling very thankful for the warm and sunny California weather we're having right now, and power and water and a roof over my head. A little rain would be nice, just so I don't have to go out and water the yard. And OK, I'd like to be able to wear a sweater maybe. Otherwise, everything's good. Take care, and remember to drink your fluids!

Christmas Radio’s playing on Pandora, drinking a nice cup of hot coco, doodling snow flakes, reindeers and elves …‘tis that time of the year again! At the studio at least. Lately I’ve been in complete holiday mode busy preparing for the season rush. Having a ton of fun creating illustrations and design ideas, but what I’m mostly excited about is that a lot of this years cards are predominantly inspired by Parols (traditional Filipino Christmas lanterns).
Growing up I’ve always been fascinated with Christmas Parols. I love everything about them, from the various types of designs, their intricate details, to the scent of baked ube in which I’ve somehow associated them with. Traditionally Parols have two components, the five pointed star and a pair of tails to represent rays of light (think shooting star) which symbolizes the star of Bethlehem that guided the Three Wise Men on their journey. Above is a sneak peek look at this years Parol inspired cards. More updates on this in the weeks ahead!
Happy Thursday!
For the past few years I have incorporated Ranger Kent and Cowgirl Pearl (two characters my wife and I portrayed for our church's annual Vacation Bible School) into our Christmas card. This year, with the birth of our daughter Virginia, I wanted to put her in as well our dog, Charlotte. The problem I ran into was that Kent and Pearl were never married so I would have a lot of explaining to do if they showed up on the card with a baby, right? I decided to go with it anyway and add this little note on the back of the card:
Last year sometime Ranger Kent and Cowgirl Pearl got hitched and had a baby some 10 months later. Oh, and they also adopted a dog, apparently.
________
I hope that straightens things out kids!
As a little side note, if you go back and look at some of the illustrations I have done for Highlights this year, you can see Kent or some kind of cowboy in the illustration.
I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas. God Bless you and your family and best wishes for a successful and healthy new year.
- Chuck, Daisy, and Virginia.
I just finished this Semi Custom Collage portrait. This little guy is totally fearless and loves baseball with a passion. He's so adorable, too! This is the first one in which I've used the green option. You can get your portrait done
here.
I entered the PS Print Holiday card contest. Please vote for my Christmas Chihuahua
here.
I just had to share this Christmas card by my Twitter buddy, Elizabeth Caldwell. Don't you love it? You can purchase this and many other designs
here. Be sure to follow her on
Twitter, you won't be disappointed.
Because I'm slightly daft, I came up with a great idea ~
If you buy any of my Christmas cards I have in my shop, I will sign, address and send them out for you! How does that sound? Yes, I know it will be my handwriting, not yours on the card. But for people who maybe won't notice or care so much, why not? (You can always send me a signature to 'forge', or ahem, let's say 'try to duplicate', and you know that since I'm an artist I'm good at that sort of thing. Aunt Flo will never know.)
This way it will save me sending the card to you, then you having to turn around and send the card out, since time is beginning to get a little tight.
Please email me or convo me through etsy if you're interested in doing this. You would just order the cards, then email me your address list of recipients, and I'll do the work.
Hurry, before I come to my senses and change my mind!
(Actually, please order them by the 19th if you want to do this. Earlier is better. Thanks.)
WOW, where did this weekend GO? Oh I know, I was making Christmas cards and prints and finishing up some knitting. All weekend. I didn't take enough breaks and was pretty cranky and at one point when I was a little too tired and realized I'd printed something sideways for the second time I wanted to go outside and let go with one of those AAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHH kind of yells, the kind that would make the neighbors steer clear of you next time they saw you. But I didn't.
"Nine Ladies Dancing", colored pencil on board, no stealing.
I've pulled a bunch of Christmasy art from years past, and have made cards. They're a hair away from being done, and will go up in my old etsy shop that's been lying dormant for a while now. My plan is to keep this one for art only, and the other one (Tweedy Crab) will continue to just be for knitting and yarn things.
I feel like "Last Minute Lou", trying to get my holiday stuff all together. It should have been done weeks ago. Ah well, at least I'm doing it now. Next post should be the official unveiling of it all.
Back to work...
She came, she went, it was jolly good fun and we are going to do it again when Christmas is over. Lovely Joanna from 'On the Blossom Trail' popped over for a lightning visit, and there was cake and woods, though not in that order. We were on a tight schedule, with both of us being busy in various ways. We slurped a quick cuppa, and opened a packet from Daisy Lupin, which I had saved, as it was going to be a 'Blogworld-meets-real-life' kind of day. I was delighted to find two of Daisy's gorgeous felt decorations which I had been admiring on her blog.
They got hung at once, even though we don't usually decorate until a week before the great day. They look just right hanging on the beams - thank you Daisy!
Then it was off to the woods, for a very quick leg stretch, with me wearing the lovely silk scarf sent me by Connie, from Mumbo-Jumbo. I have to wear it wrapped, as my lifestyle doesn't allow for 'floaty things'. But it keeps my neck lovely and warm and I almost feel like a proper lady. Thank you Connie!
I really enjoyed showing off our lovely scenery, from the semi abandoned farmhouse with its flock of poultry, to the shy little herd of Dexters which graze nearby. There was a shoot going on nearby, as is usual at this time of year and when we returned to the car it was hemmed in by several mud splattered SUV's and an open back van with about 50 brace of pheasants hanging from the rails. It was a macabre but spectacular display; if it had been in a London gallery it could quite have passed itself off as an artwork. A gaggle of country chaps were striding across the windswept field with guns. We were approached by a couple (a brace?) of tweedy jacketed, knickerbocker clad gentlemen, in stout shoes and knee-high woollen socks, who generously gave Jo a pair of hen birds. When we got home, I just had time to force a bowl of tomato and chick pea soup on her, a fantastic recipe I swiped from Becca and Bella's blog. I added a tablespoon of Miso paste because I cannot cook any recipe without dickering about with it. And then there was cake. Moist carrot cake, made by Joanna, which was quite delicious and enough left for Andy later that night. What a lovely way to spend an extended lunchtime, and how I smiled to think of someone else tussling with dead birds...I have been thinking of 'ways with pheasant' apart from the ubiquitous casseroles. With the last lot we got, I coated them in a sauce, and grilled them, the result being a dryish spicy finger food dish, which would go well with other 'finger pickin' foods, and maybe with cold lager to wash it down. The measurements are all approximate as I tend to hurl everything into a bowl and judge quantities by instinct, which is not very helpful to anyone else...
STICKY PHEASANT
To coat two lots of bird bits - legs, wings, breast, miscellaneous gubbins.
4-5 tablespoon of sweet chilli sauce, the dipping kind.
2 tablespoons dark soy sauce1 tablespoon of runny honey
2 fat cloves of garlic, crushed or minced
a few dried lime leaves, crushed (optional, this just gives zesty, limey notes to the final taste)
1 tablespoon of lemon juice or lime juice if you have it. (Bottled or fresh, it doesn't matter)
A couple of ounces or more of sesame seeds, enough to cover all parts
Mix all the ingredients apart from the sesame seeds and coat all the bits in the sauce. Oven bake or grill until done and the sauce has gone sticky and less liquid. Baste the remaining liquid over the pieces, then dredge them in sesame seeds, and return to the oven until they are toasted. That's it. It tastes better cold, and would make excellent winter picnic fare.
We had ours with game chips, which are simply winter potatos, (unpeeled) quarted lengthways, drenched in extra virgin olive oil, and sprinkled with dried herbs. Bake in a tray, on the upper shelf of a hot oven until done, rather like roast potatoes, but don't over do them - they should have a nice brown skin and soft, floury inner.
Praise be, I hit my illustration deadline last night. Feedback from the roughs won't arrive until January, so I can relax for a bit. Now I have time to start a new private commission and even think about having some time out to make paper mache bits and pieces. Everyone seems to be making lovely festive fripperies and I am tempted to join in, though I haven't actually crafted anything for years. Willow House is selling some lovely treasures at the moment, pop over and have a look.
NOTE - thanks to a remarkably successful sales period, stocks of Red Flannel Elephant Christmas cards are dwindling rapidly. If there is anyone left on the planet who wanted some and hasn't yet ordered any, the Management recommend doing so PDQ before they run out...
Lovely cards. They don't make cards like they used to do they? I would love to buy cards in a vintage style for a change.
Julie xxxxxx

Hi Barbara thank you for your comment on fb. I am back now and trying to get everything sorted out before Christmas. Seems like I have fallen behind suddenly 😄 Just one more present to buy, just one more goodies to make, just one more tidying up to do, just one more shopping to do and the list goes on😂 And one more day to catch up . I will get there.
I love the postcards Barbara and you have such a lovely collection. Looking at them I have already got an inspiration for another doll! Thank you for sharing
That’s so lovely Shashi, if you ever need more detailed photos or anything just let me know, and I will gladly send them to you.
I’m pleased to know you are home safe but what an awful time you must have had. It's no surprise you are a bit behind with your Christmas preparations. I’m sure you will get everything done in the end (I sometimes wonder how we do it – but we do).
Have a wonderful Christmas and a Very Happy New Year. Barbara x
The style of this era was so charming. Thank you for posting more of the cards for us to enjoy.
