1. We Like What We Like

When he was little, one of my husband’s favorite Christmas movies was “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.” I laughed out loud the first time he told me the title, sure he was making it up. But no, it’s a real movie starring a young Pia Zadora as a martian child. The acting is terrible, the […]

6. Interview with Penny Lockwood & Review of Boo’s Bad Day (Giveaway)

Author Photo Pen smiling copyCheryl, thanks for hosting me.  At the end of the tour, I will pick out one commenter’s name and send an autographed copy of Boo’s Bad Day to a United States address only.  If the name I pick is someone who lives outside the U.S., I will send a PDF copy of the book.  So remember, readers, be sure to leave contact information when you comment!

If your readers missed yesterday’s post, they can catch up at http://www.melanierobertson-king.com/wp02. Tomorrow, I’ll be visiting with http://rosgemmell.blogspot.com/.

Penny Lockwood has published more than 100 articles, 75 stories, a chapbook, and her stories have been included in two anthologies. She writes for both adults and children. Her fiction has appeared in numerous genre and children’s publications, and non‑fiction work has appeared in a variety of writing, parenting, and young adult print magazines and on line publications.  She edits for MuseItUp Publishing.  Visit her web site at http:// pennylockwoodehrenkranz.yolasite.com. Her writing blog is located at http://pennylockwoodehrenkranz.blogspot.com/.

She has recently released Boo’s Bad Day with 4RV Publishing and has three other children’s books under contract with them: Ghost for Rent, Ghost for Lunch, and Many Colored Coats. She has three romances published by MuseItUp Publishing: Love Delivery, Lady in Waiting, and Mirror, Mirror.  Her short story collection, A Past and A Future, is available through Sam’s Dot Publishing and Smashwords.

Thank you for joining us today, Penny. Can you please start off by telling us a bit about yourself?

I am a wife, a mom, and a grandmother.  I love animals and can’t remember not having at least one. (Most of my stories that have animals contain little adventures our animals have had.) I enjoy reading, mostly science fiction and fantasy, with an occasional romance. I’m a member of a wonderful women’s book group where I have to stretch myself and read other books I might not pick up on my own.

When I’m not involved in writing-related activities, I am a line editor for MuseItUP Publishing.  I love to putter in my garden, go for long walks, and in the evenings, I spend time watching a little TV and working on crocheting projects. I feel fortunate to live in a beautiful part of the country, the Pacific Northwest.

When did you first get bit by the writing bug?

When I was a young child, my dad would tell us stories at bedtime.  I definitely got the bug by listening to his “tall tales.”  I remember thinking how great it was to be able to make up stories and entertain someone with them.  For my own entertainment, I wrote stories and illustrated them when I was in grade school and continued to enjoy creative writing through high school and college. My professional writing career was put on hold until much later.

Why did you decide to write stories for children?

As a mom and a grandmother, I’ve read a lot of books to my kids and grandkids.  I love watching them connect the letters on a page with words and their first struggles to read.  When I decided to write professionally, my children were fairly good readers, and I wanted to write stories they might enjoy.  Now, my “target” audience is my five-year-old granddaughter and my twenty-one-month-old grandson.

Do you believe it is harder to write books for a younger audience?

Yes, I do.  My current release, Boo’s Bad Day, is a picture book. I’ve also written two middle grade novels.  When writing for children, the author needs to be able to relate to the age level to which he or she is writing.  This means knowing what makes kids laugh, what scares them, and what they’re curious about.  It’s important to spend time with kids of the age level you are targeting.  When writing a picture book, you are limited to only a few pages and less than a thousand words. Yet, you have to tell a complete story including characters, obstacles for your character to overcome, and a resolution.  This can be quite challenging.

What is your favorite part of writing for young people?

Watching them become so involved in reading the story, they don’t want to put it down.  I can recall as a child, hiding under my blanket with a flashlight so I could keep reading after bedtime.  I love it now when my grandson asks his mom or dad to read “the kitty” book (Boo’s Bad Day).

Can you tell us what your latest book is all about?

Here’s the blurb and tagline for Boo’s Bad Day:

Tagline:

Boo sneaks out of the house and discovers that freedom by himself can be scary.

Blurb:

Boo is a very bored kitten. When Timmy and his mom return home, Boo sneaks out of the house.  Boo is frightened by the noises of the big world outside of the safety of his warm home.  When Timmy coaxes Boo back into the house, Boo realizes some places are safe and some are not.

What inspired you to write it?

Years ago, we had a black teenage cat by the name of Boo who had an adventure. He was an inside/outside cat and happened to be outside when an ice storm stuck.  We called him, but he didn’t come in.  We were, of course, worried and kept going outside to call him. We finally heard him meowing and located him over 50 feet up in a fir tree on our property.  He wouldn’t or couldn’t come down.  The next day, my husband tried climbing our tallest ladder but couldn’t reach him. We finally asked a friend, who was taller, to help out.  He was able to grab Boo and get him down. The poor kitty’s meows were getting sadder and sadder. He was so glad to get inside, he didn’t move from our woodstove for almost a week!

Where can readers purchase a copy?

What is up next for you?

I am finishing up edits for my two-book series Ghost for Rent and Ghost for Lunch, which will be packaged together and sold through 4RV Publishing.  Ghost for Rent was previously released as an ebook through a company no longer in business.  I’m looking forward to having it available in a newly edited and illustrated print edition.

We are getting excited about the birth of our newest granddaughter in July, so I’ll be taking some time off to help my daughter after Cora arrives.

I’ve got a couple of writing projects in progress including a new Ghost book and a NA/adult fantasy.

Do you have anything else to add?

I want to thank everyone who has been following along during Boo’s blog tour.  I also want to thank you again, Cheryl, for having me and for asking such insig

htful questions. (I might have to steal a couple of them for my own author interviews…) I also wanted to say how thrilled I am by the illustrations created by Deborah C. Johnson.  I couldn’t have asked for better. She did a fantastic job of capturing Boo’s expressions.

Thank you for spending time with us today, Penny. We wish you much success.

My review:

Boo’s Bad Day is an adorable story of one kitten’s adventure. Boo thinks being inside is boring, so when Timmy and his mom open the door on their return home, he sneaks out for a bit of excitement. He soon discovers, however, that the outside world is a scary place filled with loud noises and scary situations that make the inside look mighty inviting.

As I thought about this story, I realized that Boo is no different than a young child who wants to explore new things and then discovers the safety and comfort of normal everyday situations is good too. Written for children from ages 18 months up to six years, this charming adventure story engages and entertains. Lockwood’s prose indicates a knowledge of her intended market; and the simple text will help as youngsters transition from being read to, to reading independently.

The colorful artwork by Deborah C. Johnson is a delightful complement to Lockwood’s story. Children will enjoy watching the emotions play across Boo’s face from beginning to end.

Boo’s Bad Day is a wonderful book that I am thrilled to have as part of my children’s library.

7. Win Some Poetry Books!

Over at my math and science blog I'm celebrating the fact that my Pinterest site has nearly 10,000 followers. I'm a bit shocked to tell you the truth. Pinterest has been a fabulous way for me materials related to elementary instruction. Where I once used Google Sites and Weebly, I now use the boards on Pinterest. I can't emphasize how important the visual aspect of this has been. Instead of reading through lists of bookmarks and site descriptions, I can actually SEE what things look like. To say this has revolutionized the way I organize ideas and resources is an understatement.

In honor of closing in on the 10,000 follower milestone, I am giving away copies of a few of my favorite science poetry books. Here they are.

I don't know about you, but I am looking forward to the beginning of the summer Olympics. I especially like the track and field events. Over the years, I have reviewed several books about the Olympic Games. Some of them tell the story of the games, while others tell the stories of some of the athletes who participated in them. Recently I reviewed a book called G is for Gold Medal: An Olympics Alphabet. The wonderful people at Sleeping Bear Press have given me FIVE copies of this book to give away. My review of the book is below. To participate in this giveaway send me an email at [email protected] telling me which Olympic event is your favorite. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Long ago in ancient Greece, wars between the city-states were a common occurrence. The only time peace could be guaranteed was every four years, when the citizens of the city-states would lay down their arms for a month and come together to compete as athletes. The games were hosted in the town of Olympia, and the men who won the races and other events were given an olive wreath to wear.
The modern Olympic Games came into being because Baron Pierre de Coubertin felt that the “a modern version of the Olympic Games would foster peace between nations.” Because of his efforts, there has been a summer Olympic Games every four years since 1896 except in 1916, 1940, and 1944, which were, ironically, all years when the world was being torn apart by war.
In this fascinating fact-packed alphabet book, Brag Herzog tells us about the Olympic Games from A to Z. Beginning with Ancient Greece on the A page, he goes on to tells us about Baron Pierre de Coubertin on the B page. On the “C is for all the countries page,” we learn that in 2008 two hundred countries sent athletes to the Summer Olympics. Next is D for decathlete. On this page, we learn that for two days decathletes who up to the daunting task compete in ten events. These events include shot put, long jump, high jump, and running.
For each of the topics explored in this book, the author gives us a poem that introduces the subject. He supplements this with a more in-depth section of text. Young children will enjoy the hearing the poems and looking at the art, while older readers will be interested in reading the longer text sections. This format makes th

9. Never Enough...Book Giveaways!

Has there ever been a time in your life when you felt like you weren't enough? I know I can think of several. Okay, yeah, a LOT of times. In high school I worried about not being thin enough, not being cool enough. Actually, those worries still plague me at times, but at least as an adult I'm comfortable enough with myself to not let those passing insecurities overwhelm me.

As part of the release for NEVER ENOUGH, the newest YA novel from my agent-mate Denise Jaden, several author-friends contributed their thoughts on not feeling like enough. You can see them on the video embedded below.

But wait! That's not all!

Denise is also hosting a HUGE book giveaway. Leave a comment here and then visit her blog and share the link back to this blog, and that will earn you TWO entries--one for commenting, and one for sharing the link. You can see all the books she's giving away by visiting this post: http://denisejaden.blogspot.ca/2012/07/blog-tours-and-entries-and-prizes-oh-my.html

Speaking of which, I can tell you exactly what I never have enough of: shelf space for all the books I want to read!

Interview

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
It will make you laugh aloud or your money back. Really.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
In my teens, I read Art Buchwald’s columns and Philip Roth’s fiction. Before reading their work, I didn’t know anyone could be that funny, and smart, on paper.

What is one book everyone should read?
Good-night Moon, Cat in the Hat, and You Can’t Go Home Again.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
Catcher in the Rye.

What is your dream cast for your book?
Paul Rudd as Philip and Kyra Sedgewick at Helena

What is your favorite quote?
Never, never, never give up. – Winston Churchill

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
Studs Terkel, Amy Friedman, and S.J. Perlman

Finish the sentence––one book I wish I had written is....
The Book of Deuteronomy. Imagine getting something so dry and filled with rules published and so well read. Go figure.

Favorite places to travel?
San Francisco, East Berlin and Pismo Beach.

What's the best writing advice anyone has ever given you?
If you write one page a day, at the end of the year, you’ve written a book.

A Short History of a Tall Jew by Dennis Danziger
Philip Lachman, a 39-year-old public high school teacher, dad, and divorcee, is looking for true love. More specifically, he is looking for a new wife who will put up with his teenage son, a budding communist who's into designer shoes, his teenage daughter who dreams of being the queen of an oil-rich country, and his ex-wife who's determined to make his life miserable. And it gets worse from there. Philip has no leads, no numbers, no idea where to begin. But how hard can it possibly be? Any kind, caring, competent woman will do. So long as she's not an actress. But in glittery, glamorous, how-much-money-are-you-worth L.A., Philip–who barely eeks out a living as a public high school teacher––soon finds himself on the ride of his life.
A SHORT HISTORY OF A TALL JEW is a beautifully crafted, charming and laugh-out-loud page-turner that takes on both the trivialities and truths of life, love, religion, and the public education system with a wink of the eye. It's a book for any reader who's ever struggled with the vagaries of the human heart, or maybe just being human.

12. How to Create a Winning Author Contest!

A new kind of giveaway turns contacts into evangelists to sell more books

Guest Expert: Penny C. Sansevieri

We have marketed hundreds of books over the years, and many of our authors have launched their own book giveaways. For them and every other author we’ve spoken with, those giveaways just don’t do much to generate awareness, buzz, excitement or sales.

While book giveaways are common (a Google search for “book giveaway” yielded 1.7 million results), they don’t do much for the author, and they may even be counter-productive.

Let’s talk about why your typical book giveaway doesn’t work, and then we’ll talk about a new approach.

When we worked with Book Sweepstakes LLC to develop a new kind of Viral Book Sweepstakes platform, we knew that we needed to analyze all of the reasons typical giveaways don’t work and craft a solution that met those challenges. In fact, we wanted to go further than that; we wanted to create a platform that was inherently viral. We wanted a platform that would turn contacts into evangelists to promote the book, bring more visitors, and turn them into evangelists to bring even more people.

First, if you’re going to do a giveaway I suggest that you look at all of the elements of a successful campaign.

Have a great prize: First, a book isn’t the best prize to give away. Why?

Well, it’s a low dollar item. To attract attention, to get visitors to come to your site, to get them to fork over their email address, and to get them talking about your book so more people come, you need a sexy prize.

Giving away a book has another downside: it actually undermines sales. How so? Well, you got someone to your website, and they’re interested in your book. Now, it’s time to close the sale. Sales are what you want, yes? But why should they buy now if they might win later? Bye, bye, customer. No sale today for the nice author who is giving away her book.

When we created our AME Viral Book Sweepstakes platform, we decided to give away the iPad2, which everyone really wants.

So offer a great prize! If you don’t want to offer an iPad, make sure the prize is worth at least $500.

The importance of going viral: You probably know the term going viral, where things spread from person to person, and from more people to more people, like the flu. That’s what you want for your book. You want your contacts, friends and readers to tell more people about the book. Why is that so important? Because that’s what generates sales. NPR reported that 80% of book sales are prompted by word of mouth!

A typical book giveaway certainly doesn’t drive viral word-of-mouth buzz about your book.

How to go viral: Typical giveaways stop at ‘register here to win,’ and they don’t reward people for spreading the word.

You need a couple of things to make your book spread virally, and since a typical book giveaway doesn’t do that, we set out to develop a platform that does. Here’s what it takes:

People are busy. Why should they take the time to tell others about your book? You need to offer an incentive. Remember that great prize – the iPad2 – we talked about above? In addition

13. Coming Soon to a Bookstore Near You

I don't have a review today, but I do have some ARCs to give away, courtesy of my fabulous local indie, The Book Loft. Two are middle grade, one is YA, all three will be coming out next month.

First up, SHARK WARS by E.J. Altbacker. Unlike most ARCs, this one is actually hard cover!

(From the back cover:) Journey into the ocean's depths for a middle grade adventure series that has all the action of Warriors and Star Wars...but brings the battle underwater!

(From Goodreads:) Since the dawn of time, prehistoric shark clans called Shivers have ruled over the earth's oceans, fierce protectors of all who swim. For eons, the Big Blue has prospered under Shiver Law, and the delicate balance of sea life kept sacred. Until now.

Rising sea temperatures and overfishing have caused food to become scarce, and the battle for new hunting grounds has brought with it corruption and warfare.

Now, with the ocean on the brink of chaos, a young reef shark named Gray - exiled from the safety of his peaceful reef home - must venture deep into Open Water to unlock the secrets of his destiny and bring peace back to the ocean. But first, he'll have to discover the truth about who - and what - he really is.

Coming from Razorbill June 28, 2011

THE ABSOLUTE VALUE OF MIKE by Kathryn Erskine, author of Mockingbird

(From Goodreads:) Mike tries so hard to please his father, but the only language his dad seems to speak is calculus. And for a boy with a math learning disability, nothing could be more difficult. When his dad sends him to live with distant relatives in rural Pennsylvania for the summer to work on an engineering project, Mike figures this is his big chance to buckle down and prove himself. But when he gets there, nothing is what he thought it would be. The project has nothing at all to do with engineering, and he finds himself working alongside his wacky eighty-something- year-old aunt, a homeless man, and a punk rock girl as part of a town-wide project to adopt a boy from Romania. Mike may not learn anything about engineering, but what he does learn is far more valuable.

15. Books and Contests by Writer Friends . . . Yay, for you! You could be a winner . . .

One of the greatest things that has happened since I started writing is that my network of friends keeps growing–writers and non-writers. Many of the writers host contests. (As I did for THOMAS AND THE DRAGON QUEEN last fall.) Below are links to some giveaway contests and good books written by good writers. So stop by one, or more, of them and enter. Someone has to win. It could be you!

Hugs,

Shutta

(p.s.:  I will be posting a permanent link on the right hand side to ongoing book-related contests. Be sure to check that out soon.)

18. Literary Giveaway Blog Hop

I'm pleased to participate in Leeswammes's Literary Giveaway Blog Hop, which allows blog readers to visit many excellent blogs (see the list below) for the chance to win awesome books and other prizes. Here at Teach with Picture Books I'm giving away a Caldecott Honor picture book (of course!), a Newbery Honor Award chapter book, and a sensational nonfiction business title.

My guidelines, as always, are simple:

  1. The giveaway is open to US residents only.
  2. To enter, email me with the title of the book you hope to win in the subject line. Want to win all three? Send three separate emails.
  3. You don't have to follow me to win, but it would be a nice gesture. Pity follows are happily accepted. Following my blog will increase your good karma, but not your chances of winning.
  4. Contest will close at midnight EST on February 24th EST. I'll notify winners shortly thereafter.
My picture book giveaway is the 2010 Caldecott Honor Book Interrupting Chicken, written and illustrated by David Ezra Stein, and generously provided by my friends at Candlewick Press.

From the Candlewick site:
It’s time for the little red chicken’s bedtime story --and a reminder from Papa to try not to interrupt. But the chicken can’t help herself! Whether the tale is HANSEL AND GRETEL or LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD or even CHICKEN LITTLE, she jumps into the story to save its hapless characters from doing some dangerous or silly thing. Now it’s the little red chicken’s turn to tell a story, but will her yawning papa make it to the end without his own kind of interrupting? Energetically illustrated with glowing colors --and offering humorous story-withi

20. Five days of Seasonal and Holiday book giveaways - Day One

In many states in the U.S. and in many countries in Europe snow has been falling for days. Roads have gone unplowed, schools have closed, people have not been able to go to work, and errands have gone undone. Though many adults have no doubt been annoyed by this state of affairs, many children have been delighted by all the snow days they are having.

For this first day of the five days of seasonal and holiday book giveaways, I have a title about one person's hopes that tomorrow will indeed be a snow day. If you would like to enter this giveaway, send me an email with your name and snail mail address. Good luck!

Lester L. Laminack
Illustrated by Adam Gustavson
Picture Book
Ages 5 to 7
Peachtree Publishers, 2007, 1-56145-418-4
They have heard the weatherman mention that there might be snow in the forecast. Snow! Of course they want snow. Lots of it so that the school buses won’t be able to move, and so that the teachers won’t be able to get to work. They want a snow day.
They want a day with no alarms going off. They want a day when they can snuggle together under a blanket on the sofa and “sip hot chocolate from giant snowman mugs.” They want so much snow that they cannot even open the door and have to climb out the window to get outside.
Ah yes outside! Outside they will build a snow fort four feet tall that has
“a zillion snowballs inside.”  They will go sledding and they will build a snowman. But now they have to go to be bed to get ready for that snow day.
Children who have eagerly hoped and prayed for a snow day will thoroughly appreciate this book. Grownups who have watched the weatherman hoping that they will get to have a snow day will laugh out loud when they come to the last couple of pages, and when they discover who the main narrator in the story is. Cleverly crafted and beautifully illustrated, this is a seasonal picture book that captures the hopes and magic of snow days for people of all ages.

21. Clearing Off the Night Stand

The stacks really are out of control over here and I need some help finding the top of my nightstand so I'm counting on you to help me out.

How?

I'm giving away some books and FIVE of you are going to win. That's right, seven books will be coming through the mail, quite possibly to your doorstep.

And how can you win?

It's very simple really. Two steps:

  1. Follow this blog.
  2. Leave a comment.
That's it. But in the comment, you MUST choose one of the books. Last time some of you tried to cheat and say you'd take any book. That's very nice and all, but I'm sorry. Your name will only be entered if you've chosen a book. So let's take a look at the selection, shall we?

Need by Carrie Jones  YA Fantasy   paperback
Pixies and werewolves and kissing -- oh my! Book three in this series comes out tomorrow. If you haven't read the story that started it all, here's your chance to win a copy.

Mirrorscape by Mike Wilks  Upper MG Fantasy    ARC
Enter the Mirrorscape - an amazing world limited only by the artist's imagination...One that involves stepping through paintings into a world where the bizarre is commonplace and all logic is irrelevant. A world where angels, pyramid mazes, imaginary monsters, talking houses and - most importantly - the simple paintbrush all combine to form a hugely original and deeply compelling fantasy. (from Goodreads) This book came out in 2009, the first ever released by Egmont.
Subject Seven by James A. Moore  YA SF/Action/Adventure   ARC
Years ago, scientists began developing the ultimate military weapon: deadly sleeper assassins housed within the bodies of teenagers. Now, Subject Seven, the dangerous alter-ego living inside a 16-year-old boy, has escaped the lab and is on a mission. His objective? To seek out others like him and build an army capable of destroying their creators. (from Amazon) This book releases in January, but you can read it before everyone else if you win it here!
