1. Finding Inspiration in Shapes - Circles

Looking for inspiration in shapes I see around me. Circles. I took tons of photos but here are three of them.

65-1.2-Circles-3

65-1.2-Circles1

65-1.2-Circles-2

After which I did a bit of an exercise with all that inspiration! Used the rose in the above photograph, got my pencils and pens out, and started playing ...

65-1.2-Shapes-rose

Quite enjoyed that. Have a lot of catching up to do this week, so there's long way to go as yet ... Cheers!

Liked this doodle enough to fill it in with colour. Just for fun. Cheers.

42 Doodle Fluid Rhythm

Doodling again, in my little Moleskine journal. Marker pens, Pilot drawing pen. Very therapeutic, though I wouldn't want to speculate on what it says about my state of mind. At least the colours are relatively calming ... Cheers!

4. Little Blue Submarine

30 Little blue submarine

I've been doing a bit of doodling. Not quite sure where this came from, but I liked it enough to transfer it into Corel Painter and paint over the original colored pencil drawing. Still needs a bit of a clean-up but I'll do that once I'm done with the queue of Christmas and New Year designs I have to finish up or redo! Cheers.

5. Two Limes

29 AJ Two Limes

A quick watercolour pencil sketch. It's not easy knowing when to stop, especially as I'm used to the more detailed and layered coloured pencil work! The result isn't exactly as I'd envisioned it, but I'll keep playing. Is there a fine line between stubborness and determination? Cheers!

6. Two Doves One Heart

27 Two Doves One Heart

A little doodle of a sweet pair of doves, one pale blue and the other light pink, cuddled in an embrace shaped like a heart. It started out as a pencil sketch in my moleskine that I scanned and then digitally painted in Corel Painter, then played around with in Photoshop to create a pair of separate blue and pink hearts as well:

I've used them to design cards and matching gifts for ...

Weddings: Two Doves One Heart Wedding at Floating Lemons Events;

Baby Showers for twins: Twin Doves Heart at Floating Lemons Events;

and Valentine's Day: (coming soon!)

Cheers!

7. Pink Owl

18-Pink-Owl
Another one of my doodles, originally drawn in marker pens in my Moleskine Ideas Book and then digitally painted in Corel Painter 11.

I'm a bit behind with everything -- I've been working on a job, trying to sort out the business side of things, and have just completed a clean-out of my computers by reinstalling the operating systems ... always a stressful procedure although this time it went relatively well and I didn't end up bashing my head against any walls. Still, it takes two days to back everything up, reinstall programmes, then transfer the lot back. But it's all done!

I'm itching to lose myself in a good, long, therapeutic coloured pencil drawing, but I'll have to wait another week as I have a long to-do list that's screaming for attention. Priorities. Cheers.

8. Blue Owl & Bee Happy Daisies

07-Blue-Owl
I've just discovered Corel Painter and am thoroughly enjoying everything it has to offer. This blue owl started off as a teeny marker pen doodle in my moleskine ideas book, and was scanned in and dropped into Painter where I had a sinful amount of fun painting him over, playing with their oil brushes and palette. Couldn't do it without my Wacom Bamboo pen and tablet -- I spent a whole day immersed in a non-messy oil painting experience. Can't wait to get my hands 'dirty' again. I have further plans for my Blue Owl, he will be 'graduating' soon and wearing the proper attire for it.

Here's an older drawing (Bee Happy Daisies) that I reworked in photoshop (pre-Painter discovery) and uploaded to Zazzle. I cut the bees and flowers out and played with the design in various configurations on the different products that they have to offer ... I love the customization option on Zazzle that allows for this. So it's slightly different depending on which product it's on up at the store, but this is the original illustration:

9. Daisy & Rose

03-Daisy 03-Rose
I've been updating some of my old drawings and adding them to Zazzle bit by bit ... takes time to get everything redone and onto new products. Here are my Daisy and Rose drawings, originally done in coloured pencil -- simple ones that I have had some fun with on photoshop, adding contrast, filters and shadows.

Received Today's Best Awards for envelope designs based on both the (updated) drawings, over at Zazzle:

10. Little Robin

02LittleRobin

Still on the doodles, here's a little Robin I drew with marker pens, and then worked on in photoshop.

I'm still catching up on tons of back-logged work. Also trying to redesign my Floating Lemons identity and banners etc ... it's about time I think, but it's not an easy job to tackle especially as I'm feeling slightly uninspired at the moment. I'll get there eventually.

We're experiencing a 'false spring' here in Provence and the sun streaming in gets a bit distracting and I've been giving into it, taking daily walks with the dogs. It will freeze over again far too soon I know as February is pretty much the coldest month, so I'm taking advantage of the wonderful weather while I can.

I received a Today's Best Award from zazzle for the Valentine's Card with the little robin on it, which was quite lovely and made my day (12th January):

11. Five Macarons or Macaroons

37-5-Macarons
Used watercolour pencils for these, in attempt to play with the unfamiliar looser feel of brush and paint, while still managing to control finer details with the far more familiar pencils. I did several base washes for the background texture and used pencil on the final layers for the bitsy bits. Discovered that the quality of the watercolour paper makes a HUGE and wonderful difference too. Learning as I go along.

As for the macarons, I found them in a new stall at our Friday morning market. Such lovely vibrant colours. Had to buy them! Especially as they were obviously home-made and thus wobbly, wonky, slightly squished with bits falling off ... thus quite perfect as far as I was concerned.

My problem once I've finished any drawing is the design part of the whole process. As I have no formal training whatsoever, I find it truly difficult to figure out how to present my drawings so that they look appealing on the products posted for sale at the online stores. It's tough and sometimes takes far too long as I fiddle around with ideas. I normally end up uploading two designs: one of the drawing exactly as it is against a white background, boring but safe; and two, with whatever background I end up with -- here's what I did with these macarons:

37-5-Macarons-stripes

Not quite sure how well that works as I've been looking at it far too long and thus have lost all sense of judgement. Just plain lost all sense, really. Wish I could take some courses in basic design. Am exhausted now as I've been working pretty much non-stop for weeks. My nose has drawn blood from the grind-stone. I've a drawing in progress (faithful pencils again) that I shall complete slowly, but I may go back to doodling for a bit to give my fuzzy brain cell a chance to re-energise. Cheers.

13. Evolution of the watercolour Tomatoes ...

32Tomatoeswc

I'm posting all 3 variations here. Wasn't sure if I was going to post this first watercoour attempt at all, but fortunately I'm no longer as easily embarrassed by my mistakes as I was when, er, younger. It's my first attempt at watercolour in ages and I've only ever 'wet the brush' before, so please forgive the utter awkwardness of the piece. I did have tons of fun playing with the paints. It's just obvious that I need a LOT more practice!

Not one to give up easily on anything, I decided to get the watercolour pencils out and see if I could "fix" the above painting. Here's the result:

32TomatoesWCpencil

Love the vibrancy of the pencil colours! I may use these more often, they just zing off the page and they went on smoothly over the paint. It took longer to finish than I'd anticipated, but then isn't that true of anything worthwhile? It is far less detailed than it would have been had I started off with pencils, and is more a stylized version, but I'm not unhappy with the result.

I then placed it into photoshop, separated the tomatoes from the background to prepare them for uploading onto products at my stores, and then placed them back onto the digitally 'repainted' background once I'd cleaned them up a bit. Here's the result just so you can play "Spot the differences". You shouldn't really be able to spot them immediately, as the intention is to keep the cleaned up piece as close to the original as possible.

32Tomatoesblue

How did I do? Well, I'm definitely going to keep painting. Might try acrylics next but perhaps I'll find a less ambitious subject for my first piece. Cheers.

14. Halloween Orange Striped Bats Cake

31OrangeStripedBatsCakeI've been dabbling rather than drawing recently. One of the results being the above cake, sketched out in marker pens, to which I added little bats for Halloween. Also did a couple of other cakes at the same time and I'll clean them up and add them at a later date.

Meanwhile, I've been concentrating on updating past drawings and designs at my Zazzle store, adding them to new products such as their stationery line (letterheads, matching envelopes and address labels, I truly enjoy creating matching sets!), and on cleaning and sorting out my home, preparing it for the coming months of winter work. Getting rid of the clutter and oh my, there's a ton of that.

I've also spent the last couple of days experimenting with watercolour, with truly embarassing results. More on that in the next post as I'm trying to salvage my one attempt by whipping my watercolour pencils out. If it doesn't turn out too tragic I may share it here ... we shall see!

I did receive a Today's Best Award from Zazzle for the Orange Striped bats Cake Avery Binder design:

15. A Whale & Silly Number 1 pink

27Whale

The whale was requested by a friend as a fun drawing, so is not meant to be an accurate representation! I went through hundreds of photos on the internet of Humpback Whales (as whales are momentarily unavailable in my area to pose for pics), sketched a whole load of them for practice, and then put them aside and drew one of my own.

This was drawn between guests and summer socializing, which is why it has taken this long -- I'm refusing to pressure myself as far as work is concerned at the moment as there just isn't enough time in which to do everything. Am enjoying the final long days of warmth with good friends, and I know I'll eventually catch up on it all once the weather turns cold and I morph into a work-obsessed hermit once more :)

I did manage, however, to begin a series of Silly Numbers and Letters which I am posting slowly, as and when I get them done. Drew them out in marker pens, scanned them, cleaned them up, then fiddled around a bit on photoshop. Here's Silly Number One for you in pink (I have both the Numbers & Letters in red, blue, pink, orange, lavender, lime green, chocolate and white. Yes I tend to go overboard at times, what can I say?) and the Silly Number 1 chocolate Invitation Envelope for which I received a Today's Best Award on Zazzle :) Cheers ...

16. Black Cat

25BlackCat

I confess to being a bit of a self-control freak ... which probably explains my need to focus on detail in most of my drawings. But every once in a while even I get tired of holding it all in, and I want to just let it all out and scribble away manically. Which is exactly what I ended up doing here. Found this photo that I had taken of a scrawny black cat posing on a wall just outside the village and it was perfect. The first few layers are just wild, pretty directionless lines of graphite (I used a very soft pencil which I don't normally do either) and, once I'd satisfied the urge to play loose, I finally refined the whole thing on the final two layers.

It's definitely not up there on my list of best drawings and sketches but as far as therapy goes, it turned out perfectly. Cheers.

17. Red & Pink Cake

24Red&PinkCake

Sometimes sneaking a peek through the pages of one's past does have it's advantages. I found this in one of my old idea sketchbooks. I'd drawn it in bright cheerful felt tip pens/magic markers (what does one call them nowadays?!) and it stood out and waved at me ... so I scanned it in, cleaned it up a wee bit and here it is in its full unevenly shaped awkwardness. It's simple and far from perfect, and yet I am, absurdly, more pleased with this than I am of some of my long-drawn out (literally) creations. Cheers!

22RedGiftbox

My sister sent me some lovely prezzies and a couple of them were tucked away in this lovely giftbox that I just had to draw. It was relatively quick and simple though I did use at least seven reds (and a purple) on it. Next I might draw a couple of the gifts that were hidden in this little treasure chest :)

Cheers.

19. Flower in Green

19-Flower-in-Green2

I'm a wee bit stuck at the moment ... for the first time ever I have three drawings on the go, and am not too happy about any of them. So I'm posting this one -- a quick sketch that I completed last week. Of the three that I'm working on right now, one will probably take me weeks to finish as it's far more complicated than I'd expected (which seems to be the case with far too many of my choices), another is just too simple a doodle and I may trash it, and the last one ... well, it's plain boring. You may or may not see them here if I ever do complete them, we shall see.

I've been enjoying the spring days, walks with the dogs and, today, a visit to the nursery to buy plants (including two hanging strawberries, yum). Soon I'll have my veggie garden started up as well. Am planning to sketch as everything flourishes (assuming that something will!) and share my gardening pleasures -- successes, failures, the works. Apart from my art there's just nothing as satisfying as getting one's hands dirty with, er, dirt. Cheers.

21. Strawberries Falling

16 Strawberries

It's been gorgeous spring weather the last few days, perfect for drawing luscious strawberries while the sun streams in through the windows. Work has been slow .. I keep taking time off to wander around in the garden, pottering about with plants, or just taking pleasure in being outdoors.

I don't normally post photos here, but thought I'd show off a couple of my front garden for a change:

I have some lovely friends visiting at the moment, and it looks as though more are coming and I'll be kept occupied till the end of the month, so I've been squeezing in rapid drawings whenever possible. This started off as a simple doodle. Scanned it and played around a bit in photoshop and the above design was the result.

And below is another text design, also quick and fun to play with :) Now, if the weather would only decide to cooperate and spring settle in as it should, I'd truly enjoy the rest of the month and the good company that's accompanying it. Cheers!

23. Dog Driving a Shoe & Kaelen

12 DogDrivingShoe

It's been hectic recently and my sleep patterns are completely shot, but the good news is that I've completed almost everything (despite procrastinative measures) on my list for the moment, and that I truly enjoyed every moment of my latest drawing, above.

I dug up an old lace-up shoe from the depths of my closet where it was hiding amongst multiplying dust devils, and added a bit of a quirky twist. The idea of the driver dog came to me while I was walking my own two, who would love nothing more than to dash ahead of themselves. The model for the above was my brown Bertha--she was quite happy to pose her profile for the camera :)

Below is a text design for my nephew, hope he likes it!

24. Lemon BowTie

12Lemon-Bowtie

Today's post is a bit of a stroll into the past, as the bow tie above was a request based on a blue bow tie I had drawn a couple of years back, redrawn in lemon yellow.

I'm a Featured Seller Interview up at the Zazzle blog this week, which is wonderful and hugely motivating. Perfect timing, as I'm in the midst of sorting out my stores, and going through a much needed clean-up that will take me quite a while as I have to sort out tags, new products and redesigns on just about everything.

Here's one of my older text designs that I've now reproduced in different colours and on some of the new products:

12happy_birthday_flowers_black_invitation-p1614675392361201082d8jg_325  12happybirthdayflowersbluecard-p1372123703036599847l0u_325

Still a bit stuck on the ideas front so I'm hoping this clean-up will help kick-start the inspiration motor. Fingers crossed. Cheers!

25. Metal Ekeko, Fifty Five and Andre

10MetalEkeko

The ekeko is a Peruvian symbol/god of good fortune and prosperity. This lovely metal one was given to be by my mother while I was in Peru last month ... apparently the ekeko has to be received as a gift in order for it to cast its benevolent light upon your life. The original ones were made of clay and apart from the goods that they carry (this contemporary one even has a giant visa card!) they had a hole in their mouths into which you were meant to place a cigarette to make it happy. I assume that no longer applies!

Above was a specially designed for a friend who is turning fifty-five very soon. And below is another special request for André. Off to spring-clean now. Cheers!
