3. Writerly gatherings

I feel like I’ve spent the last couple of weeks talking incessantly – I did my first ever radio interview, and then chatted to high school students for Book Week. I buzzed around at Melbourne Writers Festival, and shot up to Queensland for a whirlwind two days at Brisbane Writers Festival.

I’ve been meaning to write a wrap-up of the festivals – some words on the awesome writers I met, and the great panel discussions of all things YA, and on signing books for some fabulous young fans, and the giant crushes I’ve developed on, like, half a dozen brilliant authors who I shared the stage with (Randa Abdel-Fattah, I’m looking at you), and the weirdness of sitting in the hotel restaurant while reading a copy of Avengers Assemble, before realizing that its author, Marvel writer Kelly Sue DeConnick, was sitting at the table next to me. I don’t know what the etiquette is for fangirling while someone is trying to eat their breakfast. Potentially not awkwardly shoving their book into your bag and hurrying away before they catch sight of you reading it.

But truth be told, I’m sort of tired of talking about myself. I’ve had a blast over the past few weeks, but I am also really looking forward to curling up in my jammies with my manuscript. I’ve missed my characters. I can’t wait to be in their world again.

Oh, and also, during MWF week, this happened:

LIFE IN OUTER SPACE IS ON THE INKY AWARDS SHORTLIST!

Needless to say, I was gobsmacked. And speechless. And so completely chuffed to be part of a list selected by young readers themselves. If you’re aged between 12 and 20, you can cast your vote here. Make sure to check out the rest of the shortlist as well. I’m honoured to be among such wonderful writers.

Following the Kids and Young Adult Literature Festival at the NSW Writers Centre, writers, publishers, those involved in Australian creativity poured around The Hughenden bar – so much noise that they drowned out the pianist on the baby grand. But who cared? It was fabulous.

Good food, great wines, good company – it was a Chaucerian  feast of storytellers.

It was a great time to thank John Dale Professor of Writing at UTS for his dedicated services to the NSW Writers Centre as the Deputy Chair of the Board.

8. Sydney Writers Festival Sparkles on Sydney Harbour

It’s a glorious Sydney day with boats on the glittering harbour abuzz with publishers, authors, speakers, readers, writers and enthusiasts.

Doesn’t matter how busy I am, I always get down to the Wharf to mix and mingle. It’s the Sydney Writers Festival after all.

I love meeting my colleagues and friends who stay at The Hughenden. Had dinner with my HarperCollins publisher Lisa Berryman; catching up with the talented author Elizabeth Stead who’s staying there as always. Love Elizabeth Stead. Love her books too ….

I get to catch up with heaps of writers in the literary  meeting place of Sydney.

Libby Gleeson has just been recognised for her contribution to the literary world with a lifetime achievement award in the NSW Premier’s Literary Award.

Libby was totally surprised by  the announcement at the plush dinner. Maybe she should have guessed when she was put at the head table between NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell and the Minister for Arts George Souris.

James Roy is excited about his trip to Germany later this year as his book ‘The Town’ is short listed for the German Youth Prize – very exciting.

Sooooo…………………….. good Libby and James.

I had lunch with Candice Bruce, a school friend who is going to rock the literary scene with her 20 year journey in writing an ART MYSTERY that reaches into our heritage, indigenous spirit, art and … it’s coming out March 2012 by Random House.

Go to the Sydney Writers Festival, suck in the creative life and enjoy!

10. International Children’s Illustrator Mike Spoor Touring Oz

Mike Spoor makes characters come alive!

His Dinasaur Cove series published by Oxford Uni Press is especially huge in the UK.

Mike’s gorgeous illustration of Watch Duck is in the Hughenden Reading Room, together with the works of award winning illustrators including Sarah Davis, Nina Rycroft, Frane Lessac, Donna Rawings and the academy award winning illustrator Shan Tan.

I was so happy to meet Mike and asked him to illustrate a new DUCK for me. Even though he had heaps of talks at All Saints Festival he made the time to create my DUCK. Thankyou Mike.

Here’s what Mike did:-

Check the illustration carefully and find DUCK – Mike did this for the illustrator page at ALL SAINTS Literature Festival.

Soooooo……………. excited about My DUCK!!!!!!!!!!

12. Some of the BEST Aussie Illustrators STAR at All Saints LitFest Perth WA

I am in awe of the talents of the illustrators at LitFest:-

Alison Lester’s beautiful illustrations are reknowned. My favourite is always – ‘Are We There Yet?’

Frane Lessac – my wild child buddy’s naive artwork brightens my day with vibant colours, symbolism and the pleasure of  delving into the illustrations – there is so much there to uncover.

Mike Spoor - I have been looking for Mike Spoor for a decade. He lives in the UK where he is a successful illustrator. Exciting news is that he is on tour in Australia now and one of his stops is speaking at All Saints Litfest Perth.  He’s also the illustrator of 2 of the talented Mark Carthew’s picture books.

Why have I been looking for Mike Spoor?

Well, his absolutely endearing illustration of  WATCH DUCK written by Joan Dalgleish has been on exhibition for 10 years at The Hughenden The Reading Room, in Woollahra Sydney.

I feel like the duck. I look like the duck. I love the duck.

Mike has promised to illustrate me another duck. I am soooo….. excited.

13. SIDE Takes Story 2 Teens in Australia & the World

Schools of Isolated & Distance Education (SIDE) - connects with young people, teachers, parents across WA, Australia and beyond.

I loved going into their Leederville studios in Perth. Headset on, computer ready, visuals ready, connected to teens and I talk for an hour with teens in remote country towns and outback stations.

Thankyou Cathy Scott for setting up and hosting the studio session.

The focus was my young adult books – Butterflies, The Cave, with special emphasis on ‘That’s Why I Wrote This Song’ where music and lyrics by Tory Gervay integrate with narrative. Jump onto the website and read the film scripts, lyrics, music, backstory - it’s all there.

The cover of ‘That’s Why I Wrote This Song’ has a female only cover – turns the guys off even though it’s about girls and guys and their relationships set against the music scene. So guys be brave and jump into “That’s Why I Wrote This Song’.

5 hour flight across the Australian desert. Love our desert.

Landed in Perth to be welcomed by Festival Director of All Saints Literature Festival – thankyou Kris Williams!

I settled into the creative residence on the ALL SAINTS campus, then headed for the Open Day at the Fremantle Youth Literature Centre – an old prison which is now a leading Kids Literature Centre.

Who should be there but the driving force of the Literature Centre Director Lesley Reece, and of course, my brilliant friends:-

Frane Lessac talented award winning illustrator and picture book writer

Dianne Wolfer talented award winning author

Mark Greenwood talented award winning author

Mark Wilson talented and award winning illustrator and picture book writer

Louise Schofield talented and award winning fantasy author.

Yes, I know – how come ALL my friends are talented and award winning? Well, because they ARE!!!!!!

Mark Wilson’s exhibition of ‘My Mother’s Eyes’ is moving, as the words and illustrations reveal the story of an Australian boy soldier who was only 16 when he enlisted for the First World War.

Post script to the Open Day:- Hanging out at Frane Lessac and Mark Greenwood’s cool  house where we watched Shan Tan’s brilliant film ‘The Lost Thing’. We indulged in good food, wine and a hot spa in the balmy Fremantle weather where we toasted Shan Tan’s ’The Lost Thing’ – academy award winner!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah to Shan Tan.

PS Shan just won the Astrid Lingren Award too – most prestigious in the world.

Dinner at the Hughenden with fabulous award winning Lucy Christopher for his first book – international best seller ‘Stolen’.

Libby Hathorn - so funny dining at the Hughenden when the next table whispers – ‘Is that Libby Hathorn? We named a class at Australia Street Public School Newtown after her!’ The Mum was thrilled to see Libby.  She’s a brilliant author.

24. Australia’s Les Murray AO – POET & Fisherman – Literary Breakfast

Thousands of fans lined up in Beijing to speak to Les Murray, Australia’s foremost living poet, according to Jim Alexander Director of CAL who opened the literary breakfast.

CAL is funding Les Murray as the UTS Writer-In-Residence. Lucky UTS students. Professor John Dale Head of Creative Practices at UTS organised this lovely event at the Queen Victorian tea rooms.

Les read from his works in between some witty quips and sincere statements. His story about his autistic son’s observations of his life was moving. His son said that ‘I’ve got to get smart.’ Well, his son has got smart. Les also regalled a great fan about his fishing exploits. Fishing is a time when he feels at peace

I LOVED Les’  line from his poem TRIVIA – ‘A fact is a small compact faith.’
