Living in our rental house is not the only change we’ve been making in Roy’s life – we’ve been teaching him Christianity 101.
He’s been going to church with first his mom (Kevin’s grandmother) and then with Kevin’s parents all his life. And I’m not knocking church – it’s great if you’re getting something out of it. And by that I mean, you’re studying God’s word and learning how, and why, God wants you to live a certain way. It’s a great place to fellowship with other Christians and to make life-long friends. God wants us to fellowship with other Christians.
However. If you dread Church, or you’re not getting anything out of the lectures pastors give, then perhaps it’s time to step back and re-evaluate why you’re going or why you’re not receiving God’s wonderful messages.
That’s where we are with Roy. Roy’s churches have continued to use the King’s James version of the bible. And there’s nothing wrong with the King’s James version, it’s just an antiquated language that is not used anymore. It’s hard for people to understand because we don’t use that language anymore. And because people don’t understand the language (or the culture in which the Bible was written), then people just assume that the Bible is not meant for us to understand.
AND THAT’S BULL HOCKEY.
God WANTS us to know how to read the Bible. He wants us to live our lives by rules laid out in the Bible. He gives us examples of how to live our lives and what can happen if we choose NOT to live by his rules. If we don’t live our lives by His rules, then he is unable to protect us against Satan’s tricks. And of course, it’s Satan’s goals to trick people into thinking they are incapable of understanding the Bible because then he will swoop in and create havoc in our lives.
So. Roy has made the decision of NOT going to church for a while and sitting with us when we have Bible study at our house every Sunday evening after dinner. We watch a few videos from the Truth or Tradition YouTube channel and then we all take turns reading out of the New International Version of the Bible. He made the decision to not go to church because he never felt like he understood anything that was taught. Too many churches focus on the hell and damnation of the Bible and though that is part of God’s word, it’s a VERY SMALL part of God’s word. Or worse, pastors will pick and choose verses out of the Bible, taking them completely out of context, and use them to their own advantage. The first time I realized that was happening was the last time I set foot in a church. I have NO INTENTIONS of going back to church – ever.
God is about love and teaching us humility, compassion, forgiveness and HOW TO LOVE OTHERS. How is anyone expected to be inspired or moved into helping others when all they are fed every Sunday is scary crap about Satan and being fried alive in hell?
Think about it.
Anyway. After watching a video, I asked Kevin to bring up one of their older videos (we have it set up where we watch YouTube on our TV and Kevin controls it with his phone – TECHNOLOGY RULES!) where they talk about HOW to read and understand the bible. Kevin brought up this video:
We’ve been watching Truth or Tradition videos for as long as they’ve been making them and somehow, we missed this one. What a COOL summary of the Bible!!
And we started talking about buying Roy a Bible that he can understand – more like a children’s bible. I wouldn’t mind having a children’s bible to read the basic stories myself. I’m not even sure I know all of the basic stories, to be perfectly honest.
I think all of us, deep down, are searching for something in our lives. Whether that’s the meaning of life, how to make our marriages successful, how to raise a God-fearing child (and God-fearing is actually, more accurately translated, into RESPECTING GOD), how to seek forgiveness or how to cultivate patience … learning God’s word, living a Godly life, tends to satisfy that hunger and produce peace.

If you’re going to be a Christian…then start representing! Stop moping around…giving people attitude…and complaining about every little thing that throws off your day. People are watching you.
How do you think you’ll ever be able to convince someone that they should investigate Christianity if their only interaction with Christianity is poor old you and your negative outlook on things? Have you ever considered that you’re actually hurting Christ more than helping him with how you treat other people? Do you think that showing up on Sunday and listening to the band or singing in the choir is going to bring others to Christ?
Christ said that you should “let your light so shine” so that others will want come unto Him.
Instead…you’re like a walking fire hydrant extinguishing any light that might be burning faintly within others.
So if you call yourself a Christian…then just start loving others and overlooking their faults. Quit trying to make everyone else pay for their sins. God’s got that under control. Become ambassadors of mercy instead heavenly bounty hunters and you’ll never have to beg someone to listen to your message about Christ again.

Discussions about devils and evil spirits generally draw a variety of responses from people. In Western societies, many people’s knowledge of evil spirits is limited to what they have seen in horror movies or what they have heard about in stories involving ghosts and haunted houses. Some people are fascinated with angelic beings, but fearful with the idea that demons are fallen angels who terrorize and do evil. Some Christians even dismiss the idea that demons exist by explaining away the Gospel records of evil spirits, saying the records are by people who did not understand sickness such as epilepsy or mental illness like schizophrenia, and called them “demons.” Nevertheless, we believe that the Bible is God’s Word and as such that it provides instruction in all matters that pertain to life and godliness (2 Pet. 1:3), which would certainly include the existence and methods of demonic spirits.
Many Christians tend to become uncomfortable with discussions involving demonic powers, especially those involving questions concerning “possession.” Often, the sparse information people have about evil spirits produces just speculation and falsehood. This is not a surprise given that most of what people learn about dark angels comes through folklore, hearsay, movies, and the media. When it comes to the topic of “possession,” movies such as “The Exorcist,” “The Three Faces of Eve,” and others, have left many with deep false impressions about the demonic, what it is, how it happens, and how to guard against it.
Relying on the world as our source for spiritual truth is very problematic, especially when we recognize that this very world is under the control of “the evil one” (1 John 5:19). Looking to the world for accurate information on the demonic is somewhat like asking the fox the best way to protect the hen house. Our primary source for learning about the spiritual realm must come from the Bible. God’s Word is truth, and it will make us wise in the ways of the spiritual world. Not only can we learn much about the kingdom of the enemy through the numerous biblical accounts, we must also recognize that the hidden nature of the spiritual realm also requires that wisdom be gleaned from experience.
Proverbs 4:5-7
(5) Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them.
(6) Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.
(7) Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
Demons go to great lengths to deceive, as well as to operate in a covert and hidden manner. Because of this we must always be careful when it comes to people’s experiences with demonic powers. Despite their clandestine nature, people’s collective experiences with these spirit beings over the centuries has provided a very comprehensive picture of their powers and how they operate.
What is Demonic Possession?
Nowadays, most theologians recognize that the word translated “possessed” in the Bible is not accurate. The term “possessed” was first used in the King James Version of the Bible and is also found in other translations, including the New American Standard Bible (NASB) and the New International Version (NIV). The actual Greek word that is translated “possessed” is daimonizomai, and means “demonized.” For most Christians the word “possessed” implies that an evil spirit is in a person and controlling them, whereas to be “demonized” provides a much broader picture of the demon’s activities. A demonized person can be someone who is under the control of a spirit or has a spirit in them, but it can also be someone who is merely oppressed or afflicted by demons. Consider the different sense conveyed by these two different translations of the same verse.

To be possessed suggests that a person is held fast in the death grip of a demon. However, if you are under the direct attack of evil spirits, if you are afflicted or oppressed by evil spirits then you are, biblically speaking, demonized. Christianity’s failure to grasp this simple truth has greatly hindered its ability to wage war against the wiles of the Devil.

Thus he and his purposes are actually defined by a proper understanding of God and His purposes. Satan’s character and his purposes are diametrically opposed to God’s. The Devil especially tries to undermine man’s perception of God’s goodness by afflicting the righteous while prospering the ungodly. His deception is geared to obscure both God’s good works and his own nefarious schemes, and to confuse people as to the difference between good and evil (Isa. 5:20).
Remember that it works to the Devil’s advantage if he can confuse people about God’s goodness. Let’s take Mr. Noah Nuttin, who wrongly thinks that God is in control of both good and evil. Mr. Nuttin knows two people who sin in the same way (lying, stealing, adultery, etc.,— the type of sin does not matter). One of them suffers evil in his life and the other one suffers nothing, or worse, appears to profit from the sin. Is Mr. Nuttin confused about God? Absolutely. Does Mr. Nuttin think that God is a fair and righteous judge? No. Does Mr. Nuttin have an understanding upon which his faith (trust) in God can grow? No. Score another run for the Devil. Mr. Nuttin would not have been confused about the situation had he been properly taught what the Word of God says about the real cause of evil, sin and suffering.
One of Satan’s goals in his seemingly random affliction of people (and his corresponding distortion of God’s written Word) is to make it seem as if God is judging and punishing people now. He wants not only to blind people to God’s abundant goodness, grace and mercy, but also to convince them that God is unfairly, unpredictably and almost gleefully vindictive. From our perspective of contemporary Christian theology, he has pretty well succeeded.
