Record label EMI is capitalizing on the Fifty Shades of Grey erotica sensation by releasing a new soundtrack to go along with the book.
Fifty Shades of Grey – The Classical Album is meant to be listened to while reading the three book series. It has 15 tracks on the album, including music that is mentioned in the book such as The Tallis Scholars’ performance of Spem in Alium, Flower Duet from Lakmé, Pachelbel’s Canon in D, and the aria from Bach’s Goldberg Variations.
If you want to sample ALL the music in the book, try Meg Latimore‘s massive Fifty Shades soundtrack mix (Spotify link). It includes 212 songs and 15 hours of music…

Librarians: You know how it goes.
You are out partying with your librarian friends. Suddenly you realize that your gathering requires a suitable soundtrack. A library-themed soundtrack. Indeed, without the proper music, the event will be a disaster!
It could happen. The worst case scenario is sobering: everyone ends up hopping around to the They Might be Giants’ album “Flood” until the police show up and ticket you with a noise violation.*
Using a combination of technology and powerful query-typing skills, I have SOLVED THIS PROBLEM. Introducing Dancing on the Reference Desk, a free playlist dedicated to libraries, librarians, and their interests.
Including such timeless classics as Ch-Check it Out by the Beastie Boys, and Lady Writer by Dire Straits make sure your next librarian rave is a success with this excellent compilation.
Note: I’m not associated with Spotify, but I do think they are pretty awesome. If you end up using this soundtrack let me know. I would love to attend some rocking librarian parties vicariously.

Jenny Klumpp who provided numerous excellent suggestions.
* This actually happened. I was in grad school hopping around with my fellow nerds, watching the Muppet Show and listening to TMBG. We chipped in to pay the ticket. This was in my experience hands-down the Dorkiest. Police Intervention. Ever.

Dear Film industry: Your metadata is not granular enough. The MPIAA ratings G, PG, PG-13, and R do not fulfill my needs.
I need information relevant to my particular disinterests. I need to know ahead of time if a movie contains elements that I consider unacceptable. I’m not talking about sex, drugs, or violence. I need to know if a movie contains cannibalism, synthesizers, or Jim Carrey.
Here is the film rating system we really need:
Rated A for An Animal is Harmed
As far as I’m concerned, decapitated human heads can roll across the screen but if a Golden Retriever gets a hurty paw you had better warn me up front.
Rated B for British Accent Faked by American
I’m looking at you, Andie MacDowell.
Rated C for Creepy Child Singing
You know things are going to get bad when a little girl starts pushing flowers around and singing quietly to herself.
Rated D for Dialog by Committee
“Oh aspiring teen heart-throb, I am attracted to your emergent yet non-threatening sexuality!”
Rated E for Escape in front of Fireball
You know that scene in every action movie ever where the actors run very fast from some sort of physics phenomenon which approaches at exactly running speed? Rated E.
Rated F for Fun Filled Frolic
If a review or worse the movie poster itself describes a “fun filled frolic for the whole family”, Flee.
Rated G for Grab My Hand
Oh no, that character is falling off a building! Grab my hand! DON’T LET GO!
Rated H for Hearts Pulled Out
A little warning before the monkey brains is all I ask.
Rated I for Italian Stallion
Does this film contain excessive amounts of Sylvester Stallone or Jim Carrey? Librarian Avengers have determined that it will be Rated I or J.
Rated J for Jim Carrey
I need advanced notice so I can start running.
Rated K for Keyboard Hacks Network in 2 Clicks
Did you know space aliens use Mac peripheral drivers?
Rated L for Lead Actors in Real-Life Romance
Real-life chemistry rarely translates well to the big screen.

The senses are a vital source of knowledge about the objects and events in the world, as well as for insights into our private sensations and feelings. Below is an excerpt from Art and the Senses, edited by Francesca Bacci and David Melcher, in which Charles Spence, Maya U. Shankar, and Heston Blumenthal look at the ways in which environmental sounds can affect the perceived flavour of food.
Oscar-winner T Bone Burnett and Grammy-winner Danny Elfman will create the music for The Hunger Games film adaptation. According to the release, this project is “an unprecedented film music collaboration.”
The two composers will work together on the film score. Additionally, Burnett will serve as the executive music producer for both the score and the soundtrack. Many Hunger Games fans have reacted happily to the announcement on Facebook.
Lionsgate’s head of film music Tracy McKnight explained: “The Hunger Games is such a special property – it has worldwide mass appeal, but it’s also sophisticated, cerebral, soulful, and rebellious. We needed a composer who can translate these qualities musically, and we have not one but two incredible artists in an absolutely thrilling first time ever collaboration.”

The Soundtrack of My Life
Do you ever kinda feel like your life is a movie? Sometimes I do and I think I always have. Weird huh? I remember picking out songs and putting on plays for my family about my life ( all 6 or 7 years of it!) . I would act out a montage of my life as the music played on my record player (how kewl was I?)
I even wrote songs (oi!)
Anyway, I was thinking about my soundtrack today because I wanted to add a song.
My soundtrack also seems to reflect the music of that time. Whether it be the 70s (not that I was born then gulp) the 80s or the 90s.
When I was born - my song would have had to be: We've Only Just Begun. (Caren Carpenter)
When I had my first kiss (with a boy who kissed like a snake - or maybe he was a snake - we'll never know. But I am pretty sure Kevin Bacon would have been much better!): Let's hear it for the boys!
When I dated my first Love at 15 (Did everyone love The Pirate Movie as much as me? Especially Christopher Atkins hair - wait most of you probably are too young to remember :( I had the VHS tape and the cassette!): First Love (Kristy McNichol/Christopher Atkins)
When I got my first car at 16 (who else is in the 1983 Toyota Celica Hatchback club! Or should I say C-Hell-ica Unfortunately, Danny Zuka didn't come with the car - an oil leek and a bummed radio did): Grease Lightning (Grease 1)
When I went off to school (UGA was a party school where I learned very little, but got caught doing bad things. Auburn where I got my MBA was tough - just a different kind of jungle.): Welcome to the Jungle (Guns and Roses)
When I got my first job (I was just happy to be making real money money money!): Opportunities (Pet Shop Boys)
When my first wedding was called off (This is your cue to boo and hiss! There were so many songs during this time - and the sadder the better! Alice Peacock's Some Things Get Lost but my friend and I used to sing this song when we were down - and yes I was 30 years old!): I Will Survive - but it had to be Cake's version)
My second round of single days: - Nelly Furtado's I'm Like a Bird. I parachuted out of a plane (with a hot guy I might add) to this song!
When I met my hubby - we met at the zoo but those songs seemed inappropriate so I chose our first concert together: Macy Gray's Still (though I loved the whole album). (BTW - I KNOW my hubby would agree with me on this one! right honey? ;)
When I got married (to the most amazing man!): We danced to Someone Like You - the Shawn Colvin version. But all of our wedding music was to Enya - I walked down the aisle to The Sun in the Stream
When I had my kids (Alicia Keyes' If I Ain't Got You)
So to date, that would be my soundtrack (you only get like 12 tracks right unless there is Part 2) This represents where I've been - give or take a few other songs. Maybe I'll have to have a few different soundtracks, depending on the montages - like Dawson's Creek's Soundtracks - you know a new one every year.
Sometimes a song will pop up and I'll think - that would be a great song for my soundtrack - maybe for the time I did....or the time I said that....
Come on - anyone else? Who's with me?
Anyway - the new song by Miley Cyrus (Climb) is awesome! I love it and it totally captures how I am feeling these days about this whole publishing process.
I'll keep you up to date on my revised soundtrack! ;)
Enjoy!
I just reread this post - man I am a sick person. I need help - a soundtrack to my life - am i crazy? Oh - Wait I need a song for that? (Crazy by Gnarles Barkley!)
ohhh! cool. I've thought of sound tracks for my book, but not my life. I'll have to think on this one. . . .
Great thought.
Christy
Love it!!
This morning the song Against All Odds came on by Phil Collins and that song took me back to the summer of my junior year when my senior boyfriend moved away. The song was on the radio ALL the time then and I related to it so much.
Anyway, this morning it was crazy how it brought back some of the pain with it! I love that about songs - they're like little time machines. :)
Oh my goodness ... that was like a musical walk down memory lane! :-)
Damn you! That Miley song just made me cry a little. Seriously, what's wrong with me?
Lisa S - love that song!
Lisa/Laura - me too! whqat's worse - I cried when she sang it on american idol (what's wrong iwth me??!!)
kelly - finally someone up in my age check box. Thank goodness.
CR evers - make sure you let me know what you chose! ;)
Love your soundtrack! We must be close in age because I remember all those songs. I loved singing Karen Carpenter because my voice is low and Shawn Colvin ROCKS! I saw her perform in Sedona. And the Pet Shop Boys, love those guys. Ah, the memories...
Oooh, I want to see that movie. And a wedding that was called off, followed by a jump from a plane? Wow. I'm glad that you didn't dance to From This Moment at you wedding. Then I might have puked.
so funny! I'm posting about The Climb tomorrow!
Shelli,
You are a bit nuts, but that's what we love about you!!!

What a fun post! My kids love that Miley song! I did not know Cake had a version of I will Survive, will have to check that out, I love their unique music!
Great walk down musical memory lane!
