We were absolutely delighted when Jon Scieszka invited us to film a video for the Children’s Choice Book Awards in his home. After filming in his study Jon was gracious enough to read one of his most popular books — The True Story of the Three Little Pigs — a retelling of the classic fairytale from the wolf’s point of view. Was the wolf really as bad as the pigs said he was? Could the three little pigs have been three little meanies? You decide.

ABOUT THE TRUE STORY OF THE THREE LITTLE PIGS
The True Story of the Three Little Pigs
Written by Jon Scieszka, illustrations by Lane Smith
Published by Viking Books for Young Readers
A. Wolf is still sticking to his story: he was framed As for that huffing and puffing stuff? A big lie. A. Wolf was just trying to borrow a cup of sugar to make his poor old granny a birthday cake. Who should you believe, the pigs or the wolf? You read. You decide. With over two million copies sold, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs remains as funny and irreverent as the inventive minds of Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith. Viking is celebrated it’s 25th anniversary in 2014 with a handsome gift edition, featuring a stunning new jacket with lots of silver. And there’s a surprise inside as well.
ABOUT JON SCIESZKA
Jon Scieszka was born in Flint, Michigan, the second of six boys born to Shirley and Louis Scieszka. Jon attended Culver Military Academy for high school. After high school Jon studied science and English at Albion College in Michigan. Upon graduating he in 1976 he moved to Detroit, then to Brooklyn, NY to write. He earned his MFA in Fiction from Columbia University in New York in 1980.
Jon taught at The Day Schooling New York City. He started as a 1st grade Assistant Teacher, taught 2nd grade, 3rd and 4th grade Math, 5th grade History, and 6th, 7th and 8th grade.
While teaching Jon realized children were the best audience for the stories he dreamed up. After taking a year off from teaching to write he sent stories to publishers. However this didn’t dissuade him from writing more — and painting apartments.
Jon met Lane Smith, an artist who was painting illustrations for magazine articles, and working on his first children’s book. Jon shared his story, A. Wolf with Lane. Lane drew illustrations for the book, then they shopped it around. Unfortunately, the story was rejected by every publisher to which it was sent. After many more rejections Regina Hayes, an editor at Viking Books, took a chance on the story. In 1989 the book was published as The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs!. Since the then more than three million copies of the book have been sold.
It’s been more than 20 years since Jon and Lane started working together. As a team they have worked together on eight picture books and eight Time Warps. Lane’s wife Molly Leach has designed all of their picture books.
Jon’s books have won awards including the Caldecott, and sold over 11 million copies domestically and internationally.
Jon still lives in Brooklyn with his wife Jeri. They have two children: a daughter Casey, and son Jake.

My biggest inspiration ever was Ariel from Disney's The Little Mermaid. She sparked my interest in fairytales, challenged me in drawing, and has always made me swoon to the endless possibilities through dreaming. I created this piece a while back thinking of her, she is timeless to me.
Which mermaid has inspired you throughout the years?

In January I had the opportunity to work on a rather unusual project. This new editions of Goldielocks and the Tree Bears, published by Editions Fleurus, has a simple but lovely paper engineering. Each page is made by two rotating disks so the scene inside changes.
I'm very pleased with the print quality and how well the book was put together. One of my favourite projects this year!

This past spring I've illustrated this lovely board book for Editions Milan. It was a nice challenge. Sometimes simple is not as easy to do as we imagine. This is also a reason why I do enjoy board books. Not only are the very first kids own, but they're a good design excercise.
La Petite Poule Rousse is an audio-book with tiny little buttons on the front so kids can listen to the story while reading each page. You can see a small video on my Instagram!

Right in time for Christmas, I am happy to present:
In between novels in my Empyrical Tales series, I like to visit my characters and celebrate with them. It is my pleasure to share these stories with you.
Queen’s Day is the most special holiday in all of Empyrean. Once a year, Father Odin returns to celebrate the victory of the first queens over the Forgotten Evil.
Author Mark Miller brings you holiday themed stories from the land of Empyrean. You can see more of these characters in The Empyrical Tales novels. Book I: The Fourth Queen, Book II: The Lost Queen and Book III: The Secret Queen are available now. Book IV: The First Queen is coming soon from Helping Hands Press. Miller also has a great selection of family friendly and young reader stories currently available from Trestle Press.
For 2012, Sylvan’s Wish takes inspiration from the Christmas classic, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffmann. Olena and her small, wooden friend Sylvan go to bed on the eve of Queen’s Day and wake up in a magical world. Before Sylvan’s wish can be granted, they must face the frightening rat-like Tylomites. The message of this take on the Nutcracker Prince shares the joy of the holiday season.

As many of people know, while I do draw cute things, they tend to have a darker side. I have been lately working on some art that is more on the cute side without the twists and darkness. That is not to mean I am giving up my dark, whimsical view of fairy tales, but diversifying my art.
So I would like to introduce my new line of art known as Little Fairytale Art, a new line of prints and jewelry brought to you by Diana Levin Art. I have decided to run this line as a separate etsy store, starting with three pieces that will gradually expand over time. This store will run in conjunction with my regular etsy store, allowing me to show the two sides of my art, growing each store individually while having some crossover. As the lines progress, they may merge into one store or each may grow into further different directions becoming even more unique collections.

Part of the fun of writing an ongoing series is creating new characters with each story. I have the same core characters from the beginning (two of which I love almost like they were my own daughters). A large part of the newest plot has to do with a great guy I call Karl Lumpkin.

With the official release of The Empyrical Tales Book III: The Secret Queen about a week away, I wanted to revisit the original purpose for this blog. Originally, I had intended to give a "making of" commentary and work my way through the story. Like Book III, Book I: The Fourth Queen closely follows the plot of the Hero's Journey. Check out the archive to see older posts, but I left off with "The Ordeal".

As the June 1st release of The Secret Queen draws near, interest in The Empyrical Tales series is growing.
Here is a brand new review of Book I: The Fourth Queen from The Reader's Roundtable.
Jaymes said, "Mark Miller has added his own unique spin on the fairytales..." and "The Fourth Queen is a really good beginning to a captivating series."

If you haven't traveled to the land of Empyrean yet, Comfort Publishing recently released both titles for Kindle. You can get The Fourth Queen HERE (http://goo.gl/ObwtL) and Book II: The Lost Queen HERE (http://goo.gl/yYzSq).
Over the next thirty days or so, I will begin introducing some of the new characters from The Secret Queen. Many of them were inspired by Egyptian mythology and dinosaurs. I look forward to sharing this next adventure with you.

What a treat! Thank you!.
Thanks, Patte! It was a thrill to shoot with John. He’s hilarious and was really into reading this story aloud as if he was in a room filled with young readers.
You’re welcome, Stephanie! I’m happy you enjoyed the read aloud with Jon.
