1. Reading and Writing--the Staples of Life

My latest reading list has been made up exclusively of Rick Riordan's Olympians series. I have read 1 through 5 straight through, though I'm not done with #5 yet. I believe The Last Olympian is the conclusion of the series, though I read Riordan is working on a new Camp Halfblood series. These books have been great fun to read. I have really, really enjoyed them, and have added Riordan to my Twitter list. My son is a huge fan of these books too, so if Riodan is ever at a book signing within a reasonable driving distance, we'd love to hop in the car and go meet him.

On the writing side, I am waiting for the last of the critiques for The Doorway short story from my online group. Next week I hope to edit the story and get it ready to send out!

I have been staying busy writing online articles to supplement my regular and paltry writing income. These are no masterpieces, and I don't receive writing credits, but they do pay...and that's pretty important too!

Yesterday I submitted my latest article for the Westside Courier. This one was on teenager Kortney Fuller, who has had a pacemaker since she was six months old! She and her family were very nice to interview.

I have also been getting ready for this weekend's Evansville SCBWI event with Margaret McMullan. I anticipate that Margaret will be a great speaker. Kristi Valiant, Elsa Marston, and Marlis day will also be there to sign and sell their own books!

2. The Last Olympian--Two Thumbs Up As High As They Will Go!!

Hey, everyone, this is the Great and Clumsy CARLMAN, reporting back to duty after falling off our loading dock last weekend. Yep, fell off a loading dock! Can you believe it? I was helping someone unload a few things out of a car when I suddenly stepped off the dock by accident. Fortunately, it wasn't very high and I didn't just fall right over. But I did twist my leg and had to take a few days off.

The only good thing was, once the constant pain eased, I finished The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan. MAN. OH. MAN. What a story!! This is it--the final confrontation between the forces of Kronos and the Olympians. The trouble is that Poseidon is under the sea, battling the armies of the titan Oceanus, and the other Olympians are trying to stop Typhon, the most enormous giant possible, before he reaches New York. The only ones to stand between Mount Olympus and Kronos's massive army of monsters are Percy and his friends. Can these kids possibly stand against the Lord of Time? And to make things worse, there's a spy in the Half-Blood camp! How could it get any worse?

You will LOVE this book. There is so much action, monster fighting, and desperate battles that you won't be able to stop reading. And there's also the great Rick Riordan humor. Just wait until you meet the Party Ponies. Or see the giant in the playground who keeps saying, "Uh oh." Or witness the scenes between Demeter and Persephone. And, as always, Mr. Riordan pulls some major surprises. As when you find out what Nico's plan really is. Or when the spy is revealed. You'll never guess. Nope. You won't. I guarantee!
This is a great conclusion to a fantastic series. There are very few series that are so good that they become part of your life. The Lords of the Rings is one. Some say Harry Potter is another. (I haven't finished them) With The Last Olympian, the Percy Jackson series takes its place right with them. that's why this book deserves...

4. I got it!!!

Hey guys, Master Jedi Zack here.

Yesterday I decided that I just couldn't wait any longer for The Last Olympian so I bought my own copy. This was the Jedi thing to do because 127 people are in line for the library copies and I didn't want to make one of you guys wait any longer so that I could read it. I'm on page 109 of 381 and it is awesome! I won't give anything away, but know that this book is worth the wait!!! I will keep my eyes peeled for boxes of books that come in and make sure to get any copies out as soon as I get them.

Here I am with my copy. It's mine, all mine!!!

5. TODAY'S THE DAY!!!

Oh, yes, indeed! THE LAST OLYMPIAN comes out today!! I am so pumped!! Of course, we won't get our copies today because of the way the library gets books (we get whole bunches of different titles in one shipment) but I have been assured that we will get them soon. We're all very excited today and some of us our wearing our t-shirts to honor the occasion. Here I am in my Camp Half Blood shirt: And here's Ms. Leah, our Hunter of Artemis:Darth Bill isn't here yet, so I can't get his picture. Are any of you on the waiting list? Are you going to buy a copy? Let us know!

Carl

PS--this is such big news that even The Wall Street Journal, that most grownup of grownup newspapers, wrote an article about it. Read it here. And guess what-- it says there will be more Camp Half Blood stories! No more Percy stories, but more CHB! Woo-hoo!

6. Tomorrow's The Day!!!

Oh, yeah, uh-huh, only ONE MORE DAY until the release of THE LAST OLYMPIAN. I've never been so excited about a new book in all the 10 years I've been with the library!!

We won't get our copies tomorrow becasue of the way the library gets books, but I spoke to She Who Orders Books and asked if the library could make this one a priority, so we should get it sooner rather than later. And I'm # 6 on the waiting list, which means I'll be among the first to receive mine! Are you as excited as I am????

8. Commander X, The Last Olympian, and Other Cool Stuff

Hey, again, reader guys, it's Carl with some random cool stuff.

There are some great original Commander X stories on The Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli site. Go to their link on the left-hand side of the page or click here. There's one story in a classic Silver Age comic format and two stories that look like they came from old pulp magazines from the '40's or 50's. But, once again, these stories aren't just nostalgia rip-offs; they're exciting stories on their own. Jay Piscopo has created a fascinating and mysterious figure in Commander X and these stories make you want to read more stories to find out more about this man of mystery!

And, as we all know, The Last Olympian comes out on May 5. That's only 22 days!! If you go to the Percy Jackson Book Site on the left-hand side of this page (or click here), you'll see some good trailer videos and have a chance to read the first chapter. The library has ordered 10 copies and we won't get them on May 5 (DRAT!!!) but, as Master Zack pointed out, you can go to the library's catalog page, type in the name, and go to the book's page and reserve a copy. I reserved mine a long time ago, so I hope to get one quickly.

Speaking of Percy, I just put up a link in our Links section that I should have included a long time ago. It's Percyquest, a truly cool fan site devoted to all things Percy Jackson. There's a recent post about who got cast as Luke and Mrs. Dodds (the pre-algebra teacher who got vaporized) in the new Lightning Thief movie as well as a video of Mr. Riordan reading from Chapter 1 of the new book. Have I got you interested???

I've just started a new book called The Roar by Emma Clayton and I think I'm going to like it a lot. Eoin Colfer, who wrote the Artemis Foul books, certainly liked it. I'm in good company!

You all have GOT to read Found by Margaret Peterson Haddix! (go to my post of 4-2-09 if you want to read more) GO GO GO get it!!!

9. A New Lightning Thief Fan, The Truth About The Last Olympian Excerpt, And Rick Riordan Reads a Portion of The Sword Of Hades!

Hey everyone, 'tis the Great and Powerful CARLMAN, who is now the Greatly Excited Percy Jackson Fan, because The Demigod Files is coming out in a little more than 2 weeks!!! Yippeeee! Can hardly stand the excitement. I'll tell you more in a minute. But first, let's hear from flippy, our newest fan of The Lightning Thief:

the book called the lightning thief is a really awesome book. It's all about this kid named percy is put between this war between posiedon and zues. Zues has lost his prized possesion, the master bolt. So, percy the prime suspect beacause, the gods weren't supposed to have kids so, when zues finds out, poseidon and zues get in a fight, and gods can't steal from other gods so percy is the prime suspect. So percy goes on this adventure to find the real thief. It's a really awesome book:) :)

Thanks, fkippy!! Yes, this is one of my all-time favorite books. The rest of them just get better. The final book in this series, The Last Olympian, will come out May 5.

Now let me digress for a moment. The Great and Powerful CARLMAN, who sees through space and time, knows that several people have visited this blog to find out where to read an excerpt from The Last Olympian. The only place I know of will be be in The Demigod Files, that comes out February 10. Mr. Riordan will put a tantalizing excerpt in that book, but that will the ONLY place!! No place online!! No other blog, website, or fansite!! At least, not as far as I know. The CARLMAN has been wrong before! If you know of another place, please tell me. But on Febraruary 10, you can read an excerpt in The Demigod Files. AND NOT ONLY THAT, in that book you can read interviews with the characters, see a map of Camp Half-Blood, AND read three other Percy Jackson stories--"The Stolen Chariot," "The Bronze Dragon," and a BRAND NEW ONE--"The Sword of Hades!"! In fact, here' Mr. Riordan to tell you about The Demigod Files and read a bit of the new story!!!!!!

Enjoy,

Carl
