1. Children's Book Review of Pumpkin Patch Blessings and a Giveaway!

by Sally Matheny

Pumpkin Patch Blessings
Are you looking forward to autumn? I saw an eager, yellow leaf parachuting from a tree yesterday. The apples are almost ripe for picking, and soon the pumpkins will follow. In anticipation of the refreshingly cool air, I’m reviewing a children’s book, Pumpkin Patch Blessings, today. Also, someone will receive a blessing and win a free copy of the book!

Pumpkin Patch Blessings, written by Kim Washburn and illustrated by Jacqueline East, is published by Zonderkidz.

Soft lines and colors fill this fourteen-page, board book. Children will take delight scouring the pages for illustrations of God’s creations—plants, animals, and people. On most pages, there is a dog and a bunny. Children will enjoy searching for them throughout the book.

The story centers around two children visiting a pumpkin farm. Through the story, readers” hear” the crunch of the leaves, “smell and taste” roasted corn on the cob, and “feel” the multi-textures of pumpkins. The rhyming verses recount many more sensory experiences before ending with pumpkin pies at home.

Another feature of the book I liked was the inclusion of more than one ethnic group in the book.

One additional note, two jack-o-lanterns are inserted on the last page. Nothing in the book mentions, or alludes to, Halloween or jack-o-lanterns. In fact, the whole book focuses on God’s creation. Nonetheless, two small jack-o-lanterns nestle in among the rest of the pumpkins on the last page. Some pumpkins are plain. Others have carved-out circles and shapes with light shining through.

Overall, children will enjoy this beautiful book. The rich vocabulary makes it a wonderful book for ages 4-6. The durable design and colorful illustrations provide an entertaining book for younger children as well.

Who would like to win this book?

*All you have to do is tell us what part of God’s creation do you enjoy the most during the autumn season. We will announce the winner on Sept. 2!

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers <http://booklookbloggers.com> book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255

2. Picture Book Monday with a review of Over-scheduled Andrew

I think it is fair to say that these days many people have lives that are perhaps a little too full. They feel as if they are running on a treadmill, desperately trying to keep up, and to do all the things that are written on their to do lists. Adults are not the only ones who have this problem. Sometimes children find themselves struggling with a schedule that asks just too much of them.

Over-Scheduled AndrewOver-scheduled Andrew
Ashley Spires
Picture Book
For ages 5 to 7
Tundra Press, 2016, 978-177049-484-8
Andrew loves to perform in plays, and so he decides to join the school drama club so that he can “wear costumes and perform on a real stage.” Andrew’s best friend, Edie, helps him learn his lines as they walk home from school together. Sometimes they end up climbing a tree or playing a game along the way and that’s always fun.
Though Andrew is a natural when it comes to acting, his drama teacher suggests that he try public speaking so that he can learn how to project his voice more. Andrew joins the debating team so that he can work on making his voice stronger. It turns out that Andrew is so good at debating that his friend Calvin suggests that he join the chess club.
When Andrew has a hard time keeping up during the dance routines when he is rehearsing, he decides that what he needs to do is to “improve his coordination,” so he attends ballet and karate classes.
Somehow Andrew then finds himself joining the tennis team, working on the school paper, and learning how to play the bagpipes. He joins the French film club, takes singing lessons, and signs up for Spanish lessons because knowing another language is “just plain useful.” Up until now Andrew has been able to manage his extremely full schedule, but now he hits a wall. Andrew is just doing too many things.
Many people over-schedule their lives. They fill every spare minute with an activity of some kind until they barely have time to eat or sleep. They cannot have a social life and are constantly running from activity to activity.
With humor and sensitivity Ashley Spires (who brought us the graphic novels about Binky the cat) shows us how a young owl’s life turns into a nightmare when he takes on too many activities. Everything Andrew does is important and interesting, but together they are just too much. Children, and their grownups, will enjoy seeing how Andrew solves his problem and how he finds a schedule that works for him.

5. #Kidlit Review - Dee and Deb Off They Go Kindergarten First Day Jitters

Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) review of my latest children's book!
Scheduled for release: December 2015

Dee and Deb Off They Go Kindergarten First Day Jitters is an endearing story to which all children can relate, whether or not they are a twin, as they take the big step to full time student. Twin sisters, Dee and Deb, are about to be separated for the first time ever on their first day of Kindergarten.

Ms. McDine’s voice paints a realistic picture of first day jitters and creates characters and a school experience which is easily relatable for kids. She does an excellent job of hitting the high points of what matters most to children this age—a friend to play and interact with in school and what happens entering a classroom not knowing anyone, and in this case without your best twin sister-friend, and having to choose a buddy from a sea of unfamiliar faces.

Ms. McDine’s story reassures and helps kids be less concerned about what they will face as they begin their school journey. Dee and Deb is a delightful read that will leave children more excited than nervous for their first big day of Kindergarten.

Mr. Foster’s colorful and detailed illustrations almost leap off the page and really bring the story to life, drawing the reader fully into Dee and Deb’s adventure. The reader feels Dee and Deb’s anxiety and excitement with each flip of the page.

17. Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy By Karen Foxlee Review and Crystalized Ice Heart Activity

Ophelia and The Marvelous Boy book review and activity!

Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy

This modern-day fairy tale is a revisit to Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen”.

Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy is a mysterious story which takes place in a museum. Ophelia Jane Worthingto-Whittard is an unlikely heroine who doesn’t believe in anything except if it can be proven by science. There in the museum with Ophelia is her sister Alice and their Father who has taken a job in the museum to arrange an exhibit. All of them are grieving the death of their mother and wife.

On her very first day in the museum, Ophelia discovers a boy locked away in a long forgotten room. The boy, whose name has been stolen, is a prisoner of the Snow Queen. He has been waiting for someone to come and help him and now is his chance with Ophelia. He has waited a very long time.

ophelia1

Ophelia embarks on multiple journeys to various corners of the museum to help set the boy prisoner free. Along the way she endures many tests and trials and discovers more about the boy. The boy himself has taken his own remarkable journey to save the world from the icy embrace of the Snow Queen.

This book is well written with many stories inside stories unfolding. It is a great adaptation of the original classic, making it both believable and relevant.

We learn in this modern day fairy tale that the power of friendship, love, and courage can see us thru the most difficult times. Grab your copy of Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy HERE.

Something To Do

The Snow Queen lives in a cool and icy world turning everything she touches into a crystalized ice world. We thought we’d have a little indoor crystal ice fun.

What’s in that pot over there?

IMG_0002
Would you believe ice crystals? Or nearly ice-crystals. This is a science experiment that would even please Ophelia.

Pipe- cleaners folded in half and twisted down to make a heart. 3 tbsp of borax per 1 cup water.

Boil water, add borax, take off heat, add pipe-cleaner hearts, and let it set overnight, to pull out these beauties.

Now we have a beautiful heart ring to place in our fairy garden, on our table, or as a wreath on the door.

20. Children's Book Review - There's A Lion in the House by Mary Esparza-Vela

Mary Esparza-Vela’s children’s book entitled, There’s A Lion in the House along with Jack Foster’s hysterical illustrated cover immediately made my mind race as to what the author had in store for her readers.  Hooked from the onset I immediately opened the book.

The youngest of four rabbit brothers, Robby, was the silliest of the bunch. Always the jokester, Robby thrived on teasing his siblings every chance he got with good old-fashioned pranks. Will the mention of the lion that almost ate their Grandpa in the woods one day make his imagination run wild or did the lion actually find it’s way into their home one evening. What is Robby to do when he hears loud roars during the night from within their house and when he tries to tell his brother’s each of them ignores him? Will Robby be brave and search where the noise is coming from or will he hide under his blankets?

Mary Esparza-Vela’s There’s A Lion in the House is a delightful tale of sibling antics that will have the reader laughing out loud throughout the story. Ms. Esparza-Vela’s expert storytelling will make There’s A Lion in the House a cherished book for years to come and I’m sure will be worn around the edges from the constant reading.

Jack Foster’s brilliant and hilarious illustrations enhance Ms. Esparza-Vela’s story to the highest level of enjoyment for both children and parents.

23. Review of The Water Cycle Book 1

The Water Cycle – Water Play Book 1

Author: Mayra Calvani
Illustrator: Alexander Morris
Publisher: Guardian Angel Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 9781616332372
Publication Date: March 2012
Reviewed by: Karen Cioffi

Being a strong proponent of education, I love books that teach children in a fun and engaging way. The Water Cycle by Mayra Calvani does just that.

According to USGS.com, “Earth's water is always in movement, and the natural water cycle, also known as the hydrologic cycle, describes the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. Water is always changing states between liquid, vapor, and ice, with these processes happening in the blink of an eye and over millions of years.”

This is what the author conveys to children in an understandable and entertaining way.

Dealing with the water cycle, this vividly illustrated picture book brings the young reader on a journey from clouds being too full of water droplets to contain them, to rain, to condensation. The full water cycle.

The story begins with a lively and wonderful hook that immediately grabs the child’s attention, “Huddled inside the CLOUD high up in the sky, the water droplets are excited. They know something BIG is about to happen.” And, the author uses this technique throughout.

Another helpful strategy for fostering learning is that the clouds, rain, and ocean take on human characteristics with faces. This is another element that makes the read fun and engaging. Along with this, the illustrations, many full pages, are right on the mark. They will definitely help the child better grasp the water cycle process.

Along with a delightful story, the author included fun reading comprehension activities at the end of the book: Seek and Find Words. Find these words in the story, then find
these words in the puzzle; and Match the words to the correct sentence. Both these exercises are helpful tools to further aide in the child’s understanding and retention of the content.

It’s been quite a while, but I still remember learning about the water cycle in school, but it was done with a much more formal teaching method. Today’s books, including The Water Cycle, strive to make reading and learning fun for children.

Children are our greatest asset and resource. Teaching them to grow informed and knowledgeable is our responsibility. The Water Cycle, and books like it, helps us do this. It is a great learning aide for the teacher and classroom, and will be a perfect addition to any child’s home library.

24. Review of Picture Book Three By The Sea by Mini Grey

Three by the Sea
by Mini Grey
Reading Level: Ages 4 and up
Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers (April 5, 2011)
ISBN-13: 978-0375867842
My Rating: 4/5 stars
Source: Review copy from publisher

You know when you read a picture book, and the artwork and the writing work beautifully together that they feel almost inseparable? That’s what I experienced when I read, and re-read, Three by the Sea by Mini Grey. The text didn’t tell the entire story–the illustrations told us the rest, and the reader had to look at the illustrations to understand the things that the text didn’t tell us. The text also flowed well and never stumbled, telling the story in an appealing way, and the illustrations were whimsical and drew me in.

In Three By the Sea, three friends–a cat, a mouse, and a dog–all live happily together, each doing their own work to help each other out. But when a fox salesman comes along, he sows discontent and suspicion, and after a big fight and then a crisis, the three friends have to figure out what they mean to each other and how to be happy. And figure it out they do, with a few changes.

I love the way it’s so clear, without telling us outright, that the salesman means no good even though he’s saying he does, and that free is not really free (at least from salesmen). And I also love how Grey suggests that advertisements can make us unhappy by suggesting we need or want things that we don’t actually need or want and were quite happy without. I also took from Three By The Sea that ads and society can push stereotypes on us that don’t fit us at all, and that friendship and love can be stronger than any disagreement. Friends can be family. There are good messages in this book without being didactic; instead, they are woven into the story.

Grey’s illustrations are quirky, expressive, and layered with texture, and are pleasing to the eye. The illustrations and panels move the story along visually; we see the wet fox salesman arriving on the beach in one panel, and then his hand knocking on the friends’ door while we see them happy eating cheese fondue through the porthole window in the next panel. And the text moves well; there’s just enough on every page to tell the story well. This is an enjoyable story that underscores the importance of friendship and love, and living the way that feels right to you.

25. Children's Books Spared from Lead Law's Axe! Hooray!

This post also appears on my group writing blog, Route 19 Writers.

Illustration by Arthur Rackham for Wagner, Richard (translated by Margaret Amour) (1911). Siegfried and the Twilight of the Gods. London: William Heinemann, New York: Doubleday. Public domain image obtained through Wikimedia Commons via Haukurth
Over the years, children's books have battled many dragons: censorship; competition from TV, video games, the internet, etc.; slashed library and school book budgets; changes in bookselling; changes in publishing. Oh! And horrid picture books by celebrities.

They sometimes emerge from these battles a bit singed or bloodied, but emerge they do.

Then a few years ago, another threat quietly crept into the children's book world and threatened catastrophe, especially for libraries and fans of vintage books. In 2008, in the wake of recalls of popular toys (made in China) for high lead levels, Congress nearly unanimously passed a law intended to protect children: the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). This law, among other things, required that ALL children's products aimed at kids 12 and under be tested and certified to be (basically) lead-free. Lead is a known neurotoxin and children are especially vulnerable.

Sounds like a good idea, right? Well, the devil is in the details, and unfortunately the law failed (among other flaws) to exempt zillions of products that pose no significant threat to children. Like books. Which have NEVER been implicated in a single case of lead poisoning.

Not only did the law require expensive testing of each of the components of new books (which would have driven up the cost with no increased benefit to kids), it was retroactive, requiring testing and certification of previously published books. Here's why this was terrible for libraries and used books:
  • Testing is terrifically expensive (and hard to obtain) and libraries and used sellers were required to test every children's book in their collections or for sale.
  • The mandated testing is destructive testing - which means after submitting a book for testing, the library or bookstore would no longer have the book to circulate or sell.
To make things even worse, the Consumer Product Safety Commission discovered that a handful of children's books published before 1984 contained lead in excess of the new stringent limits. In some colors. On some pages. Never mind that a child would have to eat hundreds of books before raising his blood lead level noticeably, the law was inflexible, and the CPSC banned the sale or distribution to children of books printed before 1984.

Fearing lawsuits, some libraries and many used sellers did remove older books from their shelves. But the reason your local library may not have a nearly empty children's department is that the CPSC has issued a variety of stays of enforcement and temporary exemptions (plus there are bunch of feisty and renegade librarians out there) - but all these stays and exemptions were set to expire at the end of this year. And every attempt to amend the law or repeal it has failed.

Until this week!
