1. Mary Higgins Clark to Co-Author Book With Alafair Burke

Bestselling author Mary Higgins Clark is collaborating with bestselling author Alafair Burke on a new novel called  The Cinderella Murder. The book, which is slated for publication in November, will feature characters from Clark's recent New York Times bestseller, I’ve Got You Under My Skin. Simon & Schuster, Clark's publisher, will put out the hardcover and the audiobook. Pocket Books will publish the paperback edition. She has coauthored five books with her daughter Carol Higgins Clark, but this is the first time she has teamed up with an author from outside of her family. In addition, it is the first time that she is using characters from one of her books in a co-authored novel.

2. Madeline Stars in L.A. Times Festival of Books Artwork

Children’s book character Madeline stars in this year’s L.A. Times’ Festival of Books artwork. The illustration celebrates the new book, Madeline at the White House by John Bemelmans Marciano.

Marciano is the grandson of original Madeline author/illustrator, Ludwig Bemelmans. Jacket Copy reports: “He never met his grandfather, but he uses the same materials Bemelmans did, including gouache and ‘pens that you have to dip in ink.’ Ludwig Bemelmans started with a pencil sketch and then did an ink drawing over that — as does Marciano.”

In this video, the author explains that the new book was inspired by his grandfather’s friendship with former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. In total, Marciano has published five Madeline titles, continuing the six-book series created by his grandfather. Marciano has also written Bemelmans: The Life and Art of Madeline’s Creator and stand-alone titles like Harold’s Tail and There’s a Dolphin in the Grand Canal.

3. Holiday Reading Suggestions

A few years ago I decided to read only holiday-themed books for the month of December.  I had so much fun that it’s now one of my annual  holiday traditions.  There must be a lot of people out there who share in my tradition because every December I find myself fighting for my place in line on the library waiting lists.

I mostly prefer the holiday mysteries such as those by Mary Higgins Clark,  Anne Perry and dozens of others. The best is when they combine mystery and food such as Joanna Fluke and Dianne Mott Davidson.  I’m also a sap for a good heart-warming story such as The Christmas Shoes and the holiday books in the Cape Light series by Thomas Kinkade.  I’ve also read some good comedies and last year I found a holiday/vampire novel that I strangely enjoyed.

So far this December, I’ve read The Christmas Secret, A Wish For Christmas, Dashing Through the Snow and Engaging Father Christmas (which had me sheading tears on the metro yesterday).  Up next are The Christmas Cookie Club and Plum Pudding Murder.

So, fellow holiday readers, what else should I put on my reading list this year?
