4. Hamilton Trivia Quiz

HamiltonHamilton Trivia Quiz

American history + rap music + clever, story-telling lyrics  = Hamilton. Alexander Hamilton has an amazing story to tell, and his life is brought to life by the Broadway musical, Hamilton. It’s already won the Pulitzer Prize and was just nominated for 16 Tony Awards – the most in Broadway history! Tickets are pretty much impossible to get, but you can listen to the amazing soundtrack to get a taste of what it’s like. (I’m totally obsessed!)

A little backstory . . . Alexander Hamilton was born in the West Indies around 1755. His father abandoned him, and his mom died when he was 12. After a hurricane destroyed his town, he jumped on a boat to New York and carved a name for himself. He was rejected from Princeton University, faced discrimination as an immigrant, but used his strong personality and “power of the pen” to get ahead. He became General Washington’s right-hand-man in the Revolutionary War, part of the new U.S. Government Cabinet, helped write the Federalist Papers, founded the NY Post newspaper, the first bank in the U.S. and basically established the American banking system. He died in a pistol duel with the U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr. Lots of other drama too!

Catch a beat with our Hamilton Trivia Quiz based on Hamiltunes from the musical soundtrack.

1. What song has these lyrics?
“As a kid in the Caribbean I wished for a war.
I knew that I was poor;
I knew that it was the only way to
Rise up!
The elephant is in the room.
The truth is in ya face when ya hear the British cannons go . . .
BOOM!”

2. The song “You’ll Be Back” is sung by King George of which country?
Hint: He is not happy over the colonies wanting to break up with him, so he sings madly . . .
“Time will tell.
You’ll remember that I served you well.
Oceans rise, empires fall.
We have seen each other through it all.
And when push comes to shove . . .
I will send a fully armed battalion to remind you of my love!
Da da dat dat daaaaa . . .”

3. Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr are long-time rivals. Hamilton loves to taunt Burr with the phrase: ”If you stand for nothing, Burr, what’ll you_________?” A) Fall for? B) Eat for dinner? C) End up doing for the rest of your life?

4. What song has these lyrics?
“I’m not throwin’ away my shot!
I’m not throwin’ away my shot!
Ayo, I’m just like my country;
I’m young, scrappy, and hungry.
I’m not throwin’ away my shot!”

5. When Thomas Jefferson comes home from Paris, he sings a song “What’d I Miss?” about which state?
“So what did I miss?
What’d I miss?
___________ , my home sweet home, I wanna give you a kiss.”
Name that state! A) Oregon B) Virginia C) Texas

6. Was Alexander Hamilton Secretary of State OR Secretary of the Treasury?
Look at the lyrics from the song “Schuyler Defeated” for a clue:
(Sung by Aaron Burr to Hamilton) “Oh, Wall Street thinks you’re great. You’ll always be adored by the things you create.”

7. In the song “The Room Where it Happens”, Aaron Burr sings, “Or did you know, even then, it doesn’t matter where you put the U.S. Capital?”
Hamilton answers, “Cuz we’ll have the banks, we’re in the same spot. And I wanted what I got.”
What city instead of Washington D.C. was the U.S. Capital supposed to originally be in? (But Hamilton made sure the banking center of the nation was there, which he thought was just as important).

8. In the last song of the show “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story,” who is credited for telling the story of Hamilton’s life? A) George Washington B) Aaron Burr C) His wife Eliza

Did you score front-row answers? Check below to find out:

  2. ANSWER: King George of England. (The King George songs are hilarious – some of my faves!)

9. Loch Ness Monster

question marksLoch Ness Monster

Everyone has heard of monsters under the bed. But what about monsters in the lake? Some people believe that a real monster (affectionately named Nessie) inhabits the lake called Loch Ness in Scotland.

The legend of the Lock Ness Monster dates back to the 6th century, when an Irish Monk, Saint Columba, encountered a vicious creature in the River Ness. Reports described the monster with a large body and long narrow neck. Since these early encounters, other people have claimed to see the Lock Ness Monster. The most famous is Dr. Robert Wilson, who captured a photograph of the monster’s head and neck.

Over the years, many teams have visited Loch Ness to try to discover the monster. In the 1930s, a group of 20 men watched the lake with binoculars for five weeks. Recently, more technologically savvy methods have been used, including sonar and satellite tracking .

Not everyone believes the pictures and reported sightings of the Loch Ness monster. Some believe Dr. Wilson’s photo is not the Loch Ness monster, but the head of an elephant . Some sightings are probably optical illusions. Other people believe the reports are just hoaxes.

Even though there is no proof that Nessie exists, many people continue to believe in the Loch Ness Monster. What do YOU think? Is she fact or fiction?

14. Are UFOs Real?

question marksAre UFOs Real?

Do you believe? UFO stands for Unidentified Flying Object. While this term refers to any object in the sky people cannot identify, UFO traditionally refers to alien spacecraft. UFOs have been reported throughout history, dating back to early comet and meteor sightings.

People have observed UFOs in all shapes and sizes. In 1878, John Martin reported seeing a circular flying object moving at high speeds through the sky.  A United States Naval commander reported a red-shaped objects flying in formation over San Francisco.

The Roswell Innocent occurred in the summer of 1947 when an object crashed in New Mexico. Many conspiracy theorists believe the crashed object was a UFO.

All human UFO sightings are highly controversial and many teams have set out to find conclusive evidence of alien life. Project Sign was an official project conducted by the United States Air Force. Project Sign concluded there was not enough data to determine the origin of UFOs.

Scientists have provided countless explanations for UFO sightings. Astronomical objects, such as bright stars, planets, and even the moon have been confused for alien spacecrafts. People commonly mistake airplanes and weather balloons for UFOs. Everyday objects have been confused for UFOs, including kites, birds, and clouds.

The debate still rages on over UFOs and may never be settled. So, now I ask you, do you believe?

15. Worst Volcanoes in History

volcanoMost Destructive Volcanoes in History

An erupting volcano may be the scariest natural disaster there is. It spews molten lava and has the power to destroy entire cities. Volcanoes can lay dormant for years, which means they won’t bother anyone, but then suddenly erupt with little warning.

Mt. Vesuvius erupted in Italy in the year 79 and completely destroyed the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The eruption only lasted 19 hours, but still covered Pompeii in ten feet of volcanic ash. The heat was so severe that many people burned to death. Read more about it in the book I Survived the Destruction of Pompeii, AD 79.

The Laki Volcani System in Iceland was active for almost all of 1784, creating a dusty haze so bad that the country suffered massive food shortages.

In 1816, Mt. Tambora erupted in Indonesia and killed thousands of people. When the volcano exploded, the tremors were felt up to a thousand miles away. The eruption spit so much ash into the atmosphere that it lowered worldwide temperatures and 1816 became known as the “year without a summer.”

Most people thought Mt. Pelee was dormant, so it was a surprise when it erupted in 1902. The volcano destroyed the city of St. Pierre and the only survivors were a man in a jail cell and another man living at the edge of town.

In Columbia, South America, Nevado del Ruiz erupted in 1985, melting the volcano’s ice cap and causing a mudslide that swept away the city of Armero.

18. Leap Year Trivia Quiz

Leap Year TriviaFebruary 29, 2016 is Leap Day!

Poor February 29th. It’s the only day of the year that gets added and then dropped. Every 4 years, we celebrate it; the years in between, we don’t. 2016 is a leap year so this year, February has 29 days instead of 28 days. We get an extra day, but next year, it’s back to 28 days in February. Crazy!

Leap days are added to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth’s revolution around the sun. It takes the Earth about 365.242199 days to circle the sun. Notice this is a little over 365. So if we didn’t add an extra day every 4 years, we’d lose some time. About 6 hours every year. After 100 years, our calendar would be off by 24 days!

Suspicious? You should be. Check out our Leap Year Trivia Quiz to investigate further.

  1. How many days long is a leap year?
  2. What year is the next leap year?
  3. If you were born on February 29, on which day would you celebrate your birthday during a non-leap year when February only has 28 days?
  4. If you were born in 2004, your actual age may be 12, but what is your leap year age?
  5. The chance of being born on a leap day (February 29) are:
    A. 1 out of 24
    B. 1 out of 99
    C. 1 out of 1,461
    D. 1 out of 1 million
  6. People born on leap days are called:
    A. Leapfrogs
    B. Weirdos
    C. Leaplings
    D. Leap-Lips
  7. Which famous ancient Roman ruler introduced the first leap day back in 45 BCE?

Click here for the answers! It makes me wonder – why don’t we have a July 32nd? Or another month that gets tampered with? Why February 29th?

9. There is a place in Hawaii where the beach is black. What causes it to be black? A) People littering. B) Basalt from volcanoes. C) It is painted. D) Animals . . . um . . . you know!

See below for the answers!

1. Ocean tides are pulled by the _________. ANSWER: Tides are pulled by the moon. The gravity of the moon pulls the water towards it. That’s what gives us the high tide. We have a high tide when the moon is up (dusk until early morning) and a low tide when the moon is on the other side of the earth. So basically you end up with a bulge of water being pulled towards the moon, and a bulge away from it.

2. Why do jellyfish sting? ANSWER: To capture prey and act as a defense mechanism. When their tentacles encounter prey (or a human!) they fire tiny stingers filled with venom. It will paralyze the prey, but for humans, it will just really, really hurt.

3. What should you do if you get stung by a jellyfish? ANSWER: Remain calm and tell a grown up or lifeguard. Most jellyfish stings are fine, except for the pain! But when it stings, it’s usually not just one stinger, but thousands of very tiny stingers called nematocysts that continuously release venom into your body. Sometimes they can be rinsed off with sea water. They can also be scraped off using something like a credit card (NOT your hand unless you want to get re-stung!). Then it might help to soak the area in vinegar, or use a cream pain reliever.

4. Name the 2 ingredients required to build a sandcastle. ANSWER: Sand and water!

5. Would you rather . . .  surf waves with a boogie board OR jump over waves? ANSWER: No wrong answer! Whatever floats your boat!

6. Name a popular surfing destination. ANSWER: Hawaii! There is also good surfing all over the world from Australia to Canada, to Costa Rica to Japan. The perfect waves are where wind, swell (a slow continuous movement of waves), tides, and seafloor meet.

7. What does “Hang 10” mean? ANSWER: When you’re surfing and all 10 toes hang off the front of your surf board. (Cowabunga!)

8. Name the type of bird that may swoop down and eat all your potato chips at the beach. ANSWER: Sea gulls. Don’t leave food out in the open because they are known to be very aggressive going after snacks!

9. There is a place in Hawaii where the beach is black. What causes it to be black?  ANSWER: Basalt from volcanoes, and the waves eroding volcanic rock and ash.

What are your favorite things about the beach? Let us know in the Comments, and watch out for sharks!

25. Vegetarian Trivia Quiz

Trivia QuizKids Going Meatless: Interview and Trivia Quiz

We know a lot of you are curious about being vegetarian. I recently talked to a 7-year-old who gave up meat when she was 6, and here is her perspective:

Q: Why did you decide to become a vegetarian?
A: I don’t think it’s right to kill animals. It feels good because I love animals and don’t want to hurt them. It all started because I thought pigs were cute, when I was little.

Q: What foods do you choose to eat instead/ what are your favorite vegetarian alternatives?
A: Fake meat, rice tacos, and green beans. I also eat a lot of fruit, quinoa and cheese.

Q: What do your parents think?
A: They think I’m a picky eater and wish I would eat more vegetables. But they are proud of me.

Q: Do you miss eating meat?
A: No, because fake meat tastes like real meat. I just tried vegetarian breakfast sausage this weekend and loved it!
