6. Interview with Children's Author/Editor of Walker Books (Australia) Sue Whiting

When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

I fell in love with children's literature as a young teacher. But it wasn't until I was in my late twenties that the desire to write started to flare. (Quite unexpectedly.)  I kept  a lid on it for another ten years before the desire became too strong <

9. Writers in the Environment at Brewongle Sackville in Australia

Brewongle Environmental Centre  is nestled in between eucalyptus trees and red banskia bush. I drove over the Hawkesbury river, then through villages, fields and into bushland.  I loved crossed the river on the Sackville ferry. The  craggy sandstone reddish cliffs are beautiful.

Brewongle is a NSW Education Department environmental school, learning centre and bush retreat.

Authors Simon French, Sue Whiting, James Roy and I were there to inspire talented kids to write.

The kids ran into the 1878 sandstone school house with its wooden porch and stone masonry wash stand hand. They scrambled into old wooden school benches with inkwells and pen nibs and we had a special time.

13. SCBWI Christmas Party at The Hughenden with Deb Abela as guest speaker

Jenny Hale, Sue Walker, Marcia HatfieldTrish Bernard and LachlanTina Burke and the Hope Cards with her bautiful illustration on the coverFabuous & Fun with good food, good company, Christmas Cheer and lots of authors and illustrators at The Hughenden – Sarah Davis, Jenny Hale, Aleesah Darlinson, Mark Thomason … lots.

Everyone was excited to have lovely illustrator and picture book writer Tina Burke fly in from Toronto Canada and New Zealand literary agent Frances Plumpton fly in from New Zealnd, as well as illustrator Lachlan Creagh from the Gold Coast for the Christmas party.

Deb Abela spoke enthusiastically about her beautiful book Aurelie and gave great insights from the reality of writing today where you have to market your book to having the passion to continue with your vision even when others reject it. The strength of Deb’s Aurelie is that it’s inspired by her beloved Grandma’s stories of ghosts and past lives.

It was a great celebration of  the HOPE CARDS with Tina Burke and the designer, art director Jan Latta. Jan did a beautiful job and I couldn’t have done it without her, especially since I had no idea. I just made a call to authors & illustrators from around the world to send messages and illustrations of HOPE to the kids of the Australian Bush Fires in all shapes and form and the words and images came from Netherlands, Hong Kong, Japan, Canada, many States in the USA ….  and of course Australia.

Jan had a major task to get them in the right format. We had lots of consultations but it was worth it. The Hope Cards are beautiful, warm and encompass the love of the world’s authors & illustrators for the kids of the Victorian bush fires.

SCBWI Australia will be launching the Hope Cards for the anniversary of the Victorian Fires in 2010.Deb Abela
