1. Ralph Fiennes Had to Be Persuaded to Play Voldemort!

After Dan Radcliffe admitted to actually being intimidated by Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort, Ralph told Metro that he almost didn’t take the role that he played so convincingly!

Digital Spy reports:

“I took ages to be persuaded to do Harry Potter and I have no regrets at all. I didn’t know the books. I had seen the first Harry Potter film and I didn’t feel that sort of material was something that appealed to me.”

“But then my sister rang me up and said, ‘They’ve asked you to play Voldemort. Do you not realise how big this is?

“She has children who were reading Harry Potter, so suddenly I became aware.”

Fiennes has recently portrayed M in the iconic James Bond film series, and after Voldemort he says he’s done playing bad guys:

“I just didn’t want to play malign spirits. I’d had enough”

We all owe a huge thanks to Ralph’s sister, it seems! Read the full report here.

2. Dan Radcliffe Says He Was ‘Genuinely Scared’ of Ralph Fiennes

In the latest episode of The Jess Cagle Interview, Daniel Radcliffe talks about working with hugely successful actors such as Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith and Ralph Fiennes in his role as Harry Potter, and reveals a few stories about the late Richard Harris, and comments on being intimidated by Ralph Fiennes!

Dan is told to describe the actors he worked with. He calls Emma Watson ‘smart‘, Rupert Grint ‘funny‘, Maggie Smith sharp as a knife, in a wonderful way … tough and quick witted’, Alan Rickman ‘generous‘ and Michael Gambon ‘out of control, funny, just mad in a great way, again’.

Richard Harris he says ‘The first thing that comes to mind is phoenix, I suppose – there was this one moment where Fawkes, the animatronic phoenix in the second film … Richard thought it was a real bird’

Dan says of Richard Harris’ death:

‘I remember it was devastating, it was so sad … I’d never known a person who had died before so it was crazy. I feel like looking back it’s just one of those things where you just have to go “I am so lucky to have worked with him” – it’s an amazing thing to be able to say now … the films he made are going to be true parts of history, a lot of them, it’s going to be an incredible thing to be able to say that I worked with him.

I’ve spent some time with his granddaughter, Ella, who’s also a wonderful person- his whole family was incredibly sweet to me … I was involved a little bit in a memorial service for him and they were just incredibly kind and warm”

Dan describes Helena Bonham-Carter as ‘nuts, and fabulous … I love her

He then calls Ralph Fiennes ‘genuinely intimidating’:

‘I remember when I was 15 doing scenes with Ralph for the first time. He was even scarier than Alan was at first … Alan was super intimidating to start off with as well, but then you get into it, but Ralph genuinely scared me for a few years.’

Dan then imagines working with Ralph on a comedy in the future, and says it was ‘a hell of a learning experience’ to have worked with him.

4. Voldemort Wore Stockings with Garters Under His Cloak, says Ralph Fiennes

Ralph Fiennes appeared on the Graham Norton show (below), to speak about his previous role as Voldemort in the Harry Potter films, and as the new M in the James Bond franchise.

Ralph said he’d avoided roles that required wearing prosthetics since playing Voldemort, and had some interesting costume insights for us regarding Voldemort’s wardrobe choices – some handmade stockings and  ‘fetching garters’ kept him looking elegant as ever:

“The tights would work their way down so the gusset was round my knees and I couldn’t walk as elegantly as I would like as Voldemort

“I asked the dresser to cut off the tights so for most of Harry Potter under the robes I had a very nice garter belt.”

True to character, Ralph checks his outfit still says ‘Dark Lord’ by making a child cry. He added he “knew the look was working” after walking past the script supervisor’s five year old child and “when [he] looked at him he just burst into tears.”

6. Harry Potter Actors Nominated and Receive Theater Awards

Our good friends at MuggleNet have been keeping track of Harry Potter actors gracing the floorboards of the London West End. Imelda Staunton (Dolores Umbridge) and Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort) have both been nominated for Best Musical Performance and Best Actor, respectively, from the 2015 Evening Standard Theater Awards.

Imelda Staunton is being recognized for her singing, dancing, and acting talents in her portrayal of Mamma Rose in Chichester Festival Theatre’s rendition of Gypsy. Mugglenet reports Staunton already received an award for this role, when she won the UK Theater Award last week. A trailer for Imelda Staunton in Gypsy can be seen below.

Gypsy has also received a nomination for Best Musical. The show is being put on at the Savoy Theatre in London’s West End until November 28. After Gypsy leaves the stage, the BBC is planning on broadcasting a recording of the show. No date has been given, but it will probably be sometime in the near future.

Ralph Fiennes is being recognized for his leading role in George Bernard Shaw’s Man and Superman.  The show was put on at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton earlier this year. MuggleNet reports more nominations for co-stars of Harry Potter actors in other post-Potter projects:

“Other nominees include Martin McDonagh, who directed Daniel Radcliffe in The Cripple of Inishmaan; James McAcoy, Radcliffe’s co-star in the upcoming horror film Victor Frankenstein, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who starred in Belle with Tom Felton, appeared alongside Eddie Redmayne in Jupiter Ascending and will next be seen co-starring with Emma Watson and Emma Thompson (Professor Sybil Trelawney) in Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast.”

7. Harry Potter Stars and Director Come Together for "Great Expectations"

Several Potter stars and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire director Mike Newell are working together once more. This time Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort), Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix), and Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid) have been casted together in a new adaptation of Charles Dicken's Great Expectations (directed by Mike Newell). The trailer of this newest adaptation was released yesterday (and can be viewed below). According to the Examiner, the film is set to premier at Toronto International Film Festival and be released in the UK and Germany. There is currently no notice of the movie being released in American theaters. The Examiner gives a synopsis of the movie:

The story follows a young orphan named Pip who has lived his entire life in misery with his abusive older sister. One day he is called upon by a wealthy shut-in named Miss Havisham (Bonham-Carter) to come to her home and play with her daughter, Estella. Though Estella treats Pip with utter disdain, he soon finds himself falling in love with the young beauty, which Miss Havisham encourages. Pip then gets an invitation from a mysterious benefactor to go to a finishing school where he can become a proper gentleman. But things are not as they appear to be and Pip soon finds himself at the center of a much bigger plan.

The rest of the article can be read here.
