I had done an Illustrator Saturday interview several years ago. I wanted to forward you some links for an illustrator that you might be interested in. Her name is Jamie Hogan. I graduated from RISD with her and ran into her at the ICON8 conference in Portland last week. I had known of her editorial work but apparently she is now producing some beautiful children’s books in her fresh collage and charcoal style. well, I’m one of the 4/5 apparently for YA!! lucky me! hahahaah

…and though some VERY ignorant, arrogant and snobbish people think adults should be embarrassed to read YA and kidlit, I’m proud :D

The word needs to spread. Lots of people think when you say you write for children, that you are only writing for kids up to 8 years old. So who know what they are thinking when they hear YA. I think they are thinking little kids, too. That is why they are so shocked when they finally read about one.

If you look at 45 and over, we are almost as high as the total teens. If you combine everyone over 30 years old, we almost make up half of the market. I’d say that is pretty good. Anyone who picks up a YA novel will immediately see the quality of what is being published. I love them.

The MG novels are great, too. I used to say they were perfect for the busy person, since you could read something good in a short amount of time. Kind of like having a really good gourmet dinner that you can cook in the microwave.

I know I have brain/memory issues, but I do NOT remember seeing this GORGEOUS painting by Lisa while at the conference! I LOVE it (as I do ALL your work, Lisa) :D

And I will always be saddened by the increase in reading fiction through electronics. No books on a bookshelf—just stuck in a device that requires electricity :( I see ebooks as an additional tool, not a replacement, but a lot of people don’t agree—especially the younger generations : /

I tell you, it’s so nice to revisit all the gorgeous artwork from the conference, Kathy :) Love this, Colleen! And I’m liking these comments from the agents and editors you questioned. Makes me feel hopeful about what I intend to work on :)
