1. Marvel Now: Putting together the pieces of what we know

For the last few weeks Marvel has been rolling out teaser images for Fall’s Marvel Now event/promotion/whatchamadoodle.  Today’s reveal included the above puzzle which I’m sure the internet is busily assembling right this minute. Previous piece included a bunch of images by Mike Deodate with a “shattered” motif, and it all seems to point […]

3. Marvel makes some moves: adds Tessa Thompson to RAGNAROK, bumps INHUMANS

uncanny.inhumansMarvel is in full Civil War promotional mode right now (if you’re on twitter, pick #teamcap or #teamironman to get a nice video response from one of the cast!), but that hasn’t stopped them from making a little news regarding their future films. First up, thanks to the acquisition of Spider-Man and all of the […]

5. Ms Marvel, Generation Why

cover artI read and very much enjoyed Ms Marvel, Volume One, No Normal earlier this year so I was really looking forward to volume two, Generation Why. And I wasn’t disappointed!

What I love about Kamala and the whole Ms Marvel thing is that she is not a white, blonde super-babe with curves and cleavage. And more than any other superhero comic, this one is real in a way they others often aren’t. Kamala struggles to figure out who she is and what kind of person she wants to be. She has to find a balance between being a good daughter, a good Muslim, a good student, a good friend and a superhero. She has a friend who knows about her abilities but she keeps it a secret from everyone else. And since she doesn’t want to put her friend in danger, she thinks she has to do the superhero stuff by herself.

In volume two Kamala learns an important lesson, that you need allies and most of all, sometimes you need help. Wolverine from X-Men shows up and there is some giggle worthy fan girl moments when Kamala tries not to squee but utterly fails. We also learn a little about the green mist that gave Kamala her abilities and I know just enough about the Marvel Universe (Agents of Shield! Avengers movies!) to have enjoyed a shiver of recognition.

Kamala is also being watched over, and even rescued, by the mysterious Medusa, ruler of New Attilan and Queen of the Inhumans. Medusa sends a gigantic teleporting dog named Lockjaw to keep an eye on Kamala and be her companion. Lockjaw is the best sidekick ever!

Along with her do-gooding, Kamala also offers up a healthy dose of inspiration and encouragement. In this story problem teens are being kidnapped and used as a power source for the evil villain’s killer robots. The “worthless” teens have all been convinced that being used as a power source will allow them to do something good instead of being parasites. Kamala of course sees things differently. She needs their help to defeat the villain and convinces them that they should not give up on themselves or their generation.

What is it with adults telling teens that their generation is no good? When I was your age, blah blah blah. They are only kids! How can anyone know what they will do when they are older? As a member of Gen X I recall hearing over and over how my generation was nothing but a bunch of cynical, do-nothing, slackers. Barack and Michelle Obama are in the gray area between generations but I’m claiming them for X. Same with Mark Zuckerberg. Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin are definitely Gen X. So is Angelina Jolie. No one would dream of calling any of them slackers.

Ok, veering back on course now.

Ms Marvel is a wonderful comic series and I wish comics were like this when I was a kid. I would have gobbled them up for sure. The nice thing is though that even not being a kid anymore, I can still enjoy them. And if you are looking to try an entertaining, well-written and empowering comic, you really can’t go wrong with Ms Marvel.

Marvel has just announced another Inhumans title with Charles Soule (She-Hulk) and James Asmus (Quantum and Woody) on writing duties. The new series known as All-New Inhumans features interiors from Stefano Caselli (Secret Warriors) and will be lead by the royal family member Crystal, sister of Queen Medusa. 7. SDCC ’15 Jonathan Storm Melts the Uncanny Inhumans Panel

Female-Wolverine

Marvel gave a little more context on the recently announced All-New, All-Different Marvel Universe during the Uncanny Inhumans panel (which was also heavy on X-Men news.) In attendance during the panel was a fan dressed up in a Medusa outfit who snagged a picture with Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso before he took the stage proper — followed by The Uncanny Inhumans title Charles Soule, who did the same before stepping to the stage. Jeff Lemire graced the stage alongside Cullen Bunn and Humberto Ramos. The panel was moderated by Sales Communication and Event Coordinator Jake Friedfeld.

IMG_2193The first announcement of the panel was Uncanny X-Men #600 slated for October 7th, an important issue that is set to finish off previous writer Brian Michael Bendis’ last issue. A new volume of All-New X-Men is launching this fall with Dennis Hopeless and Mark Bagley, featuring the young mutants trying to find peace in the post-(Cylops getting the phoenix again and making everything terrible)X-Men world.

Extraordinary X-Men #1 is slated for October 14th, as Lemire noted he was really excited about the new direction of the book. Storm is confirmed to lead the team and “carry on the dream of Professor Xavier.” Lemire teased a “a ton of surprises” coming to the book. He also explained that new twists on familiar relationships were established in the relationship forming between Old Man Logan and Jean Grey. Soule stepped in and praised a moment between Colossus and Magik.

Jeff Lemire thought his Old Man Logan series starting this fall will be “pretty cool.” Fans can see the All-New, All-Different Marvel Universe through the “eyes of an outsider” when Old Man Logan debuts later on in the fall. A new cover was shown off for All-New Wolverine by Bengal the comic is being written by Tom Taylor and drawn by David Lopez — the new book is shipping on October 7th.

The brand new Uncanny X-Men comic was given the spotlight from Cullen Bunn and Greg Land. “It’s a dangerous time for mutants” said Bunn noting that he wanted to put a team together to fight off the dangerous world that the team inhabit. The team includes: Mystique, Sabretooth, Psylocke, Fantomex and Magneto. Fans received clarification that Sabretooth is retaining the good alignment.

Then…author Jeff Lemire stated something surprising: “Hey Cullen how does it feel knowing that Magic could kick everyone’s ass on your team.” The panelists shared a laugh, and Cullen Bunn retained a sense of good humor in his response.

A really quick mention of Deadpool was followed up by the big Karnak series from Warren Ellis and Gerardo Zaffino coming on October 7th. Alonso stated that editor Nick Lowe was the Warren “Ellis whisperer” at Marvel — able to get the writer on the title.

The Uncanny Inhumans is launching this fall starring the creative team of author Charles Soule and artist Steve McNiven. “After Death of Wolverine we were sort of looking for the next thing to do” said Soule “and they brought us the Uncanny Inhumans.” With the fallout of the terrigenesis crystals following the events of Infinity, the author noted that the Inhumans could be hiding in this very Comic-Con panel! Also referenced was The Uncanny Inhumans #0 issue will lead into the upcoming Uncanny Inhumans story. A fan asked about the disappearance of Cyclops and Emma Frost. Lemire stated that there is a reason for Cyclops’ absence as one the most prominent missing mutants.

Another fan questioned if Gordon hailing from the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series would return to the comics. Soule stated that while he was excited that the character made the transition into the comics medium, he didn’t have any upcoming plans for the transmedia hero.

Soule teased a new relationship with Johnny Storm and Medusa — which is made more complicated regarding Johnny Storm’s past relationship with Medusa’s sister Crystal. Soule explained that he has written Storm into many upcoming scripts of the title and that he’s excited to script the sequence in which Crystal discovers the new relationship of Medusa and Storm.

A fan questioned where the Fantastic Four characters are in the Marvel Universe not including Storm. “Don’t believe everything you hear on the internet” stated Alonso.

8. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. gets its next Inhuman as Luke Mitchell joins cast

luke-mitchell-679x350

The second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been slowly ramping up the Inhuman-related developments that have been in the series background for some time. Now with Skye aka Daisy Johnson’s (Chloe Bennett) abilities beginning to manifest per the midseason finale, it only seems natural that another of her kind would be needed to ease her transition.

So it goes that Luke Mitchell (The Tomorrow People) will be joining the cast as an Inhuman named Lincoln who will help Skye understand the true extent of her transformation. And yes, just in case it needed to be clarified, Skye is indeed an Inhuman.

Here’s what Marvel’s Head of TV Jeph Loeb had to say regarding the new addition:

With the revelations surrounding Skye’s true identity in the Winter Finale, we knew we’d be introducing more Inhumans as our story progressed…the charming energy Luke brings to the role will make him a character to watch as we continue our season.

Mitchell’s new character will surely be the first of many, given that The Inhumans are clearly becoming the backbone of both Marvel’s cinematic universe and publishing line. The day that Lockjaw appears on my screen will be a wonderful day indeed.

9. Inhumans get special 50th anniversary covers in 2015

inhumans uscvr color preview 14 114306 Inhumans get special 50th anniversary covers in 2015

The Inhumans are the IT team for Marvel in 2015! You’ll recall that an Inhumans movie was announced for 2018, and until then, Marvel aims to make sure that Medusa’s swirling red hair and Lockjaw’s somber, antenna’d demeanor are as well known as Rocket’s rifle by then. The Jack Kirby created misfits have been teased on Agents of SHIELD and are now getting a series of variant anniversary covers, comicbook.com reveals, one a month starting with Uncanny Avengers #1 in January by Jose Ladronn.

The covers mark the 50th anniversary of the Inhumans, and subsequent covers will include Guardians of the Galaxy Team-Up #1 in Februayr, also by Ladronn, and Thor #6 by Pasqual Ferry in March.

I have no idea how common or expensive these covers will be, but even if the issues are hard to find, surely you will be able to enjoy them as nice jpegs on the internet every month!

Also released, this sweet concept art for the Black Panther:

If you’re keeping score at home….well, this is a BIG chart. Collating. As several folks pointed out, DC revealed thei rmovie slate at an investors conference and mostly to keep investors happy following the failed Rupert Murdoch takeover and shaky stock earnings. Marvel held a popular event where fans were present and involved.  A lot of people don’t want to get into the WB vs Disney thing, but I can assure you, it is real.

Also, aren’t you glad that Marvel settled with the estate of Jack Kirby so that his legacy with these characters can be fully explored going forward? Yes you are.

11. Alert! Daily Marvel Event teases NEW event: Inhumans: Attilan Rising

inhumans attilan rising 612x929 Alert! Daily Marvel Event teases NEW event: Inhumans: Attilan Rising

Another day another Marvel event teaser, but this one is DIFFERENT. Instead of teasing the return of a golden oldie event, today’s, revealed at EW, is
a new event titled Inhumans: Attilan Rising, with art by newcomer W. Scott Forbes.
This is significant for many reasons.

For years, the word on the street has been that Marvel hopes to elevate the Inhumans paving the way for a movie property featuring a band of weirdly powered misfits to make up for not having the X-Men in their film universe. (Fox has the rights and shows no signs of slowing down with the franchise.) Attilan is the home of the specially powered Inhumans.

The image, of a booted Medusa stepping on Cyclops does nothing to dissuade this narrative,

EW writes:

This one is pretty different from the other teasers released so far—Attilan Rising is the name of an entirely new story set in current continuity, not a classic one. It alludes to the end of Infinity, last year’s big Avengers crossover. In Infinity, Attilan, the floating throne-city of the Inhumans, was destroyed and crashed to the planet Earth, with the Inhuman king Black Bolt MIA in the fallout. Attilan Rising, then, looks like Black Bolt is poised to rebuild his his fallen kingdom—over the bodies of the current X-Men and the All-New Avengers.

Marvel remains tight-lipped about their end game with all these teasers, but does confirm that they are building to a reveal that promises to make everything clear.

Well played, Marvel!

12. Marvel in December: Welcome Back, Peter Parker, Bye Kaine

Marvel have released their solicitations for December, including a lot of odd decimal placements, an apparent return for Peter Parker, the finale of Scarlet Spider, and a whole load of other stuff. Here’s a few bulletpoints about what you can look out for over Christmas:

If you want the full set of solicitations rather than this cherry-picking of the bigger details, head to CBR.

dec1

It looks as though Peter Parker is returning, as is the Amazing Spider-Man brand as a whole. Five issues will be out this month, lavvelled 700.1, 700.2, and so on. A number of creators are involved on this book: David Morrell and Klaus Janson on the first two issues, followed by Joe Casey, Kevin Grevioux, Jen Van Meter, Tim Green, Tim Seeley, Emma Rios, Clay Chapman, Javier Rodriguez, Brian Reed, Lee Weeks and Sean Chen. Phew!

dec5

Kathryn Immonen is returning to comics once more, and reuniting with her Hellcat collaborator David LaFuente for a new one-off story. They’re in charge of Avengers Assemble Annual – one of three annuals out this month – which promises the debut of

Zamira! She’s Meryl Streep with a vengeance!

There is also a Hulk annual, as well as a Thunderbolts annual.

dec7

Brian Michael Bendis is bringing X-23 into the cast of All-New X-Men, which basically spoils one element of Avengers Arena. It looks like she has a new costume. Elsewhere in the Bendis World, Kevin Maguire’s issue of Guardians of the Galaxy comes out this month.

dec4

Wolverine Origins II starts, with Kieron Gillen and Adam Kubert handling the five-issue miniseries. The first cover will have an acetate cover variant.

dec6

After 25 issues Scarlet Spider is ending in December, with Chris Yost and David Baldeon the team for this final issue. Ryan Stegman provides a cover for the issue.

dec2

Inhumanity starts, followed by a number of ridiculous tie-in issues like Mighty Avengers 4.INH and so on. This issue will be by Matt Fraction and Oliver Coipel, seemingly leading us towards Inhuman the ongoing series in 2014.

dec3

Avengers Assemble brings in co-writer Warren Ellis for a new story arc, working alongside Kelly Sue DeConnick. Art will be by Matteo Buffagni. And yes, it’ll be Avengers Assemble 22.INH.

monet

No sign of an X-Factor relaunch this month, although it turns out that Brian Wood is the creator who’ll be trying to fix the almost conclusively broken Monet, following a dreadful last few months of X-Factor for the character. Monet will be joining the team in X-Men, with Terry Dodson on art.

If anyone CAN sort her out, it’s Brian Wood! Fingers crossed.

13. Marvel’s Second Wave is ‘All-New Marvel Now’, Starting with All-New Invaders

In an interview with delightful hero Brian Truitt of USA Today, Marvel have unveiled the branding for their next wave of comics. Called All-New Marvel Now, the two launch books will be All-New Invaders by James Robinson and Steve Pugh; as well as Matt Fraction and Joe Madiurera’s Inhumans.

anmn1

All-New Marvel Now will start in December, and certain current books will be renumbered to take that into account. As a result, Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers will feature an issue 24.NOW, for example. Which, yes, is ridiculous. Across the line, Marvel will be rebranding the design of their comics to match the covers you can see here, whilst Captain America seems set to be put in the spotlight (handy when there’s a new film coming out soon!)

All-New Invaders will see Cap reunited with Namor and the Original Human Torch – AS WELL AS The Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes. Written by James Robinson and drawn by Steve Pugh, this new ongoing series will send the team off to another war – one with the Kree, an alien race returning in force.

anmn2

Inhumans was already announced, and will also launch as part of All-New Marvel Now. Matt Fraction will write and Joe Mad will pencil the series, which looks to redevelop the concept of X-Men – a minority forced to band together in the face of overwhelming oppression – but for a franchise whose film rights aren’t owned by FOX.

anmn3

Avengers 24.NOW, by Hickman and Esad Ribic, will begin the new phase for Marvel on December 24th. Hey, that’s Christmas! Once Marvel send out larger versions of the covers, I’ll update the article accordinglu.

One of the most notable parts of the announcement, however, is that certain ANMN issues will come with a digital code which gives you access to the original run of comics. So readers can not only get these new comics – they can also get a look at the classic stories as well, to catch them up.
