4. Dynamite announces monthly Bob’s Burgers comic

BobsV2-01-Cov-C-WorkOfArt.jpg
With C2E2 coming up it looks like another week of Dynamite news. Starting out…a monthly Bob’s Burger comic with creators from the animated series involved, including creator Loren Bouchard. The first Bob’s Burgers mini series was a surprise hit for Dynamite with multiple printings, a best selling collection and one of the top ordered FCBD comics. The series launches in July. The PR didn’t mention the artists on these variant covers, but as with most variants, they look nice.

Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce the upcoming July release of Bob’s Burgers #1, the first issue in an ongoing series that presents all-new adventures and antics of the Belcher Family, the beloved cast of the popular FOX animated comedy series. Building upon the success of their five-issue 2014 miniseries, Dynamite and partner Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products welcome a creative team assembled from the actual television show producers and animators to deliver the engaging Belcher Family fun that millions of fans adore.

“Bringing Bob’s Burgers to the comic book medium is a lot of fun, because it allows us to tell stories that we wouldn’t normally do on the TV show and it allows our artists to illustrate them in equally unique styles,” says Mike Olsen, one of the contributing writers for theBob’s Burgers comic book series.

Loren Bouchard, the creator of Bob’s Burgers, says, “We want the comic to appeal to fans of the show, and to that end, we strive to protect the tone, the heart, and most importantly, the characters, just as fiercely as we do when we’re working on the TV show. If you enjoy the show and you don’t enjoy the comic book, then we owe you a comic book, or at least an apology.”

“We’re very fortunate that Loren (Bouchard) and his creative team of writers and artists are able to take the time to create some of the best comics in the industry today.  We wanted to wait to launch the ongoing series till Loren and his team were able to create enough material to do so, instead of continuing series of mini-series.   Bob’s Burgers has been successful thanks to the execution of Loren and his creative team.  When you think about it, Bob’s Burgers is the only comic in the industry that has the entire team of writers and artists work on the comic.  It truly is canon and no other comic in the industry has the entire creative team working on the series.” States Dynamite CEO/Publisher Nick Barrucci.

The second-ever series of the Bob’s Burgers comic book gives each member of the Belcher Family a chance to shine. Each monthly issue will include new installments of Tina’s Erotic Friend Fiction, Louise’s Unsolved Mysteries and Curious Curiosities, Gene’s Rhymey Rhymes That Could Someday Be Songs, Linda’s Attempts to Take a Nice Family Picture in Front of the Restaurant (And How It Always Goes Wrong), and Bob’s Fantasy Food Trucks (If Money Were No Object).

8. Animation’s Domination Slips on Fox Sundays

While Fox’s Sunday night lineup was dubbed Animation Domination in May 2005, it did not officially become all-animated until 2010. Now, the announcement of their fall 2014 schedule reveals that the cartoons will be ceding some of their Sunday night territory to live-action comedies "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and "Mulaney," which will be taking over the 8:30 and 9:30 time slots, respectively.

9. Wondercon audience hungry for Bob’s Burgers

If large crowds and enthusiastic cosplayers at Wondercon are any indication, Fox TV’s Bob’s Burgers is definitely gaining in popularity. With two years in a row of Emmy nominations in the Best Animated Series category and past episodes currently airing in syndication on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block, after four seasons and a fifth in the works, Bob and the rest of the Belcher clan are cultivating a devoted and loyal fan base.

For those unfamiliar, Bob’s Burgers centers around the titular small diner staffed by Bob Belcher, his wife Linda and their three weird kids, Louise, Tina and Gene. The writing is always hilarious, often subversive, and kind of unexpectedly heartwarming. The Beat had the pleasure of getting a brief sitdown with show creator, Loren Bouchard and voice actors Kristen Schall (Louise Belcher), Dan Mintz (Tina Belcher), and John Roberts (Linda Belcher) before their standing room only panel Saturday evening at at Wondercon.

As anyone who tuned into last night’s episode, Ambergris, probably knows, the episode introduced a new character, the nare do well brother of the Belcher’s eccentric landlord, Mr. Fishodor (guest-voiced by comedian and actor, Zach Galifinakis). Bouchard told us the character will be around “doing some extra landlording” for a three episode arc that will culminate in this season’s finale. Bouchard also shared that next season will open with a musical episode centering around young Gene Belcher’s musical aspirations. He said that, “over the course (of the episode) you end up watching Diehard: The Musical and Working Girl: The Musical.”

Although, according to Bouchard and crew, Fox currently has no merchandising plans in the works, they frequently receive handmade gifts from fans. When informed that there were a lot of convention goers wearing homemade replicas of Louise’s trademark bunny-eared hat at the show ,Schall, said, “Oh, nice!” and told us that she is the proud owner of a few fan-made hats. They are, however, releasing an album featuring music from the show later this year on iTunes from 20th Century Fox.

There’s also a new five issue comic series from Dynamite (reported at last year’s Comic Con) that’ll hopefully be out later this year. Time seems to be an issue though, as Bouchard (presumably along with members of his writing team from the animated series) will also be writing the comic. “You know, it’s funny,” he says, “Adventure Time interests me but I’ve only seen the comic, I haven’t seen he show. But I have kids now and we were reading the comic book together and it’s actually had a big effect on me. I love the way it’s put together.” He added that the comics will not “not necessarily be a long narrative” and that “each character kind of has their own section.”

With lots more Belcher fun on the way and with all the other tidbits fans of Bob’s Burgers are eating up, it sounds like the comics will go down nicely too.

11. Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the “Bob’s Burger” Gag on “Family Guy”

In early January, I posted a clip from Family Guy that one of our readers thought was making of the drawing style in the Fox show Bob’s Burger. Yesterday, I received an email from Alex Carter, a producer on Family Guy, who explained the backstory of the gag. Alex explains that Bob’s Burger creator Loren Bouchard suggested to the Family Guy crew that they “take a shit on my show.” So if you’ve been losing sleep over this gag, rest assured, they’re all friends.

My thanks to Alex for writing to clear the air. Below is the full text of his letter:

Hello Cartoon Brew amigos! My name is Alex Carter, a writer for Family Guy. Don’t stop reading, just continue. A recent episode I wrote, called “Space Cadet”, contained a somewhat controversial joke when it aired in January. The joke involved Chris getting a failing grade in art by submitting an art project showing the face of Bob Belcher, from Bob’s Burgers. Some of you guys here decried us for bashing an “actually good show”. But, I just have to admit some stuff.

First, Loren Bouchard, the creator of the show, was in on the joke the whole time. Everyone here in the Fox writing department knows each other pretty well. Bob’s Burgers was in between production between the show’s second and third seasons, so Loren went to a pitch meeting one day to see how our show works. We were pitching out ideas for “Space Cadet”, and Loren told us his idea that Family Guy, would, in his own words, “take a shit on my show.” And things went on from there.

Second: How did we discover the whole controversy? Well, after episodes air, we look on review sites and see what went right and what went wrong. That way, it will help us for future episodes. And Brian, one of our writers, showed me a link to Amid’s article about the incident. I was a little upset, so I was hesitant to e-mail you until now. I just want to say that even though I may disagree with your opinion, Amid, I respect it.

Third, some of you mentioned that it was “all Seth’s fault”. I just want to make something clear: Seth has had no involvement in the writing process nor the animation process since about season six. If you want to blame someone, blame Steve Callaghan and Mark Hentemann. They’ve been running the show for three seasons now, and they have a very tight grip on the show’s content. So, if you see something you don’t like, don’t blame Seth. But this season, Rich Appel was brought back on the show, Steve left for American Dad, and Mark was demoted to producer, and it’s been a little freer than other seasons. Let me say this, I think you guys might enjoy next season.

Thank you guys for taking the time to read this message (if this is posted on the site), and want to let you know I read Cartoon Brew every day. It’s a nice place, and I hope it continues for years to come.

Sincerely,
Alex Carter
Supervising Producer
Family Guy
