I’ve been a long time fan of the super talented design, illustration, and printmaking team known as Strawberry Luna. My art crush on this husband-wife studio might have a little to do with the fact that some of my favorite rock bands are among their impressive client list. And because they hand pull their beautiful silkscreens the super old-fashioned way. Or, because they hail from my hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. But, mostly I just am in love with their distinctive and smart graphic style! Best known for their silkscreen prints and posters, they also work on custom illustration and design projects including CD & vinyl packaging,web-ready icons, t-shirt designs, and logos & identity packages.
Their impressive client list includes Belle and Sebastion, Camera Obscura, Andrew Bird, Feist, Bright Eyes, Death Cab for Cutie and many, many more.

While my color mood project is officially over, I haven’t stopped keeping an eye for effective uses of color and geometry in illustration and design. Because I happen to be a musician, I’ve also started creating gig posters for my band’s shows. The gig poster is an interesting format–you have to draw attention quickly and effectively, which typically means that it needs a striking illustration or eye-catching typography.
Dan Stiles is a cornerstone of the gig poster world, and has continued to surpass its limits with his incredible command of color and use of interacting shapes. He’s a Portland-based designer and illustrator with an award-winning track record, and has worked with clients such as Death Cab For Cutie, Feist, Nike, Birch Fabrics, MTV, and Wired Magazine.
Dan, originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, got his footing in Portland during his college years. He gravitated towards design by falling into the role of rock-poster-maker at the University of Oregon. Interestingly enough, he got his start as a pen-and-ink artist rather than a digital pixel-pusher (which he expounds on in his interview with WeMake). As a punk DIY-er, he originally was avoidant of graphic design. It’s a relief to know that there were others who resisted digital illustration at first aside from me!
From there, he fell in love with the design process as well as the silkscreen process, which is often a principal element in many gig posters. His minimalist aesthetic and focus on the integrity of shape only lends itself to his chosen medium. As a gig poster designer, he often has complete creative control over the concept and execution of his designs.
Since those early days, Dan has branched out to advertising, branding/identity, surface design, packaging, and even creates his own books and merchandise. He’s worked with Birch Fabrics on their Marine Too and Mod Squad lines (the former of which was borne out of his design for an A.C. Newman poster). Dan cites his success as being dependent on his abundance of completed work.

Eleanor Grosch is a Philadelphia illustrator and printmaker with a habit of drawing animals, and gorgeously. Like a lot of artists, my world changed when I discovered Charley Harper, but Grosch seems to be his second incarnation. Her rock posters and licensed products are great, but it’s her art prints that I’m truly in love with. Her Aesop’s Fables series is a particular favorite.

I’m so pleased to have snagged a copy of The Bento Bestiary, a hand-screened booklet by Ben Newman and Scott James Donaldson. Limited to just 100 copies, the book celebrates yokai, monsters of Japanese folklore, in beautiful 3-colour geometric designs. There are a few copies left, so act fast if this sort of thing is up your alley.

One of my favourite books this year has to be The Nightlife of Trees. The book is a series of silkscreened illustrations (some nice photos here) of lushly patterned plants and animals accompanied by short mythical poetry and prose.
The illustrations are by three artists from the Gond tribe of India. Limited to a print-run of 1000, each page is effectively a beautiful limited-edition silkscreen print.
Here’s a video that shows the book-making process. The subtitles are a bit small, but the images are self-explanatory.
The term is “Youkai”, the “u” makes it a long “yo” :D

Love this book! Great colors and Scott’s writing is really a pleasure to read, not to mention the amazing illustrations of Ben Newman…
