Will Anderson directed and animated The Making of Longbird as his graduation film at the Edinburgh College of Art. The fifteen-minute mockumentary-style short about a forgotten Russian cartoon character from 1911 was a hit on the festival circuit and culminated its run by winning the 2013 BAFTA, the British equivalent of the Academy Awards. One of Anderson’s writing collaborators on Longbird was Ainslie Henderson, whose own short I am Tom Moody has been a similarly big hit on the film festival circuit.

The <Annecy International Animated Film Festival, which concluded on June 15th, awarded its Cristal prize for feature to the Brazilian film, Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury. The festival’s Cristal for short film went to the NFB short Subconscious Password, a CG/pixilation effort by Oscar-winner Chris Landreth (Ryan).

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts presented their awards today in London. Pixar’s Brave took home the BAFTA award for Best Animated Film; it was up against ParaNorman and Frankenweenie.

Interesting note: Brenda Chapman, the original director of Brave, accepted the award with the film’s second director, Mark Andrews:

Life of Pi was the winner in the category of Special Visual Effects.

The award for Best Animated Short went to The Making Of Longbird, a mockumentary by Will Anderson, 23, produced at the Edinburgh College of Art. Ainslie Henderson (I Am Tom Moody), who co-wrote the film, shared the award with Anderson. This is the trailer for the short:

The winners of the 2012 Ottawa International Animation Festival were announced earlier tonight at the National Arts Center in Ottawa. The top prize for short film went to Dutch filmmaker Hisko Hulsing for his short Junkyard. The animated feature prize went to the Spanish feature Arrugas (Wrinkles) directed by Ignacio Ferreras. It’s Such a Beautiful Day by Don Hertzfeldt picked up the audience prize.

I Am Tom Moody by Ainslie Henderson picked up two awards, including the grand prize for best student animation. Two films in this year’s Cartoon Brew Student Animation Festival were also recognized: Kyle Mowat’s Ballpit won best graduate animation and Noam Sussman’s Gum won the Canadian student animation award.
