1. Reluctant Guardian by Melissa Cunningham

guardian

Guarding Brecken Shaefer—a dark and dangerous rebel—is harder than it looks.

Death was nothing like sixteen-year-old Alisa Callahan thought it would be. Resting on pink, fluffy clouds for eternity with her gram and best friend sounded like a dream come true. After all, enduring one torturous experience after another in her short life deserved some kind of reward, right? Unfortunately, eternal rewards aren’t given out so freely when you take your own life.

Required to pay the debt for committing suicide, Alisa must become a guardian. It sounds easy enough, but not when the boy she is forced to protect has a dangerous secret and wants absolutely nothing to do with her.

Brecken Shaefer isn’t any normal teenager. He has special gifts that are sure to make Alisa’s afterlife miserable. When feelings develop between them, everything spins out of control. Not only must Alisa face her own demons— but to protect Brecken, she must face an evil so heinous that it threatens to destroy their souls completely.

Alisa is tired of hiding from her past. When the easiest thing to do is run, can Brecken give her the strength to stay?

Excerpt:

I should have realized that suicide was not my best option. But like most teenage girls, I hadn’t planned ahead. I never pictured my parents and brothers picking up the pieces of my broken life, or the empty hole I would leave in my wake.

I honestly didn’t think anyone cared that much.

The medication I’d been taking hadn’t helped matters either. My doctor prescribed it after the death of my beloved grandmother who’d lived with us since I was a baby. Three months later, my best friend Natasha, died from a brain tumor. Nothing could have shattered me more. Not just because Natty and I were closer than Siamese twins, but because we shared a dark, horrifying secret.

Something I’d never told anyone. Not even my parents. Once she was gone I didn’t know how to shoulder that weight on my own. I was drowning in sorrow. I’d fallen into a dark pit and had every right to take that antidepressant. My parents thought it would help too.

I should have been more open about my feelings. I should have confided in my mom and dad. Explained that the medication wasn’t working. That in reality I felt wcunnighamorse. But I didn’t. I didn’t realize the drug was affecting me adversely . . . until it was too late.

The only thing I wanted that night was to not feel anymore, to not have my heart ripping in two, and to not cry so hard that my whole body ached.

Would it be painful if I rammed my car into the tall pine at the curve of the road? Would it do the trick or just turn me into a vegetable for the rest of my life?

I gambled. I took a chance and got what I wanted. Death.

2. COVER REVEAL: While He Was Away, Karen Schreck

I'm so honored to be able to show you this brand new cover of Karen's book. Karen has also graciously posted her tips to writing which is below the gorgeous cover!

Karen's Tips for Writing:

While He Was Away Walmart-Exclusive Cover Reveal
and My Top Tips for Writing
Even When the Writing Gets Tough
By Karen Schreck

My birthday falls in January, just a few days after New Year’s Day.  This January, I received an incredible gift from my publisher, Sourcebooks Fire.  My young adult novel, While He Was Away, is being released nation-wide into Walmart with a brand new cover!

When my editor at Sourcebooks, Leah Hultenschmidt, graciously asked if I’d be open to this possibility last fall, I blinked, breathed deep, confirmed I wasn’t dreaming, and said, “Yes!”  I held on to the possibility until it became a reality.  Then, and only then, did I celebrate.

I won’t speak for all writers, but for me, writing is an act of faith.  I love the work deeply, or I wouldn’t do it.  I’ve generated a lot of pages that have never seen the light of day, written multiple novels that I’ve relegated to folders on my laptop.  Keeping the faith in anything, especially writing, can be hard.

The fact that Sourcebooks believed enough in While He Was Away to bring it to life the first time felt like a much-needed confirmation of years of hard work.  The fact that they are standing behind my book again in this way . . . well, it feels like a miracle.  I’m truly grateful.

Without further ado, here are my Top Writing Tips (they’ve help me a lot; I hope they help you in some way):

1.    Read a lot. Read voraciously. Read like a writer. Read some more. Read people who write in your genre or in a style that is similar to yours and take note of how they do what they do.  Read people who write in a completely different way to keep your head clear and give you new ideas.  Just. Keep.  Reading.

2.    Develop a ritual for your writing.  I wouldn’t think of telling you what to do.  You need to find what works for you, and sometimes that changes with your circumstances.  This year, I’ve been working at an ad agency in the city.  My ritual is to hunker down in the quiet car on the train and GET A LOT DONE.  Previously I’ve written in the very same quiet corner of my local library.  In basements.  On couches.  In bed.  By candlelight.  I’ve found that consistency and ritual can trigger my creativity.  Ring the bell and I’ll salivate.  Kind of like that.

3.    Don’t be afraid to be messy in your work.  Don’t be afraid to push forward even though it isn’t perfect.   Nothing is perfect!  Embrace that reality, and be kind to yourself.  And forgiving of the words on the page.

4.    Fall in love with revision.  “I’m not a writer,” I once heard a writer say.  “I am a re-writer.”  I LOVE that.  I love the word revision.  Re-vision.  Seeing again, anew, as if for the first time.  Revision gives great perspective.  And I think it’s where the real work gets done.

5.    Never give up.  Keep the faith.  Years may pass.  But the more you write, the more the very act of writing becomes rewarding.  Writing is soul-work; it lends meaning to life.  That’s what I believe, and that’s what sees me through.  Publication—well, that a wonderful thing.  But the writing—that’s where it’s at.

3. Book Review: Noah, Elizabeth Reyes

Reading Level:Young Adult
Format:EBook
Publisher:Self-Published 3/1/12
Parasols:4

Noah is a 19 year old personal trainer who is also an up and coming boxer. An orphan who was in foster homes, he lives for the ring and the gym. Veronica Cruz has lost her mother to cancer. Depressed, she has put on 40+ pounds on her 120 lb frame. So her friend, Nellie, does what any good friend would do. She forces to a gym where she got free one-week passes. Of course, Veronica is not particularly pleased that this gym is more of a boxer's gym then say the local one at the mall. Noah has been itching to train and when the two ladies walk in, the owner gives them to him. Of course he's not particularly happy to help two older women who probably want to lose the baby weight. It goes from bad to worse, when Noah tells the women he has to weight them to chart their progress, Veronica absolutely refuses to step on the scale (normal reaction, I would hate it too!); He looks her over and tells her that he could possibly guess her weight by looking at her. At that she gives him a number, 160lbs, he writes 165, and when he walks away, she gets on and is pissed off when he guess within 2lbs. 167. Noah, doesn't want to scare the women off and he could use the money so he tries to go easy on them, but for women who are out of shape and dressed inappropriately. Really, Veronica wore sweatpants and a sweat shirt, but refuses to remove them. Having and extremely good looking trainer watching her sweat and seeing the t-shirt cling to her rolls just doesn't interest her. After Nellie has a serious asthma attack after finding out her husband is cheating on her. She begs Veronica to head back to the gym the next day. It will be good for her.

Veronica continues going to the gym alone and the end of the first week, she's lost a good amount of weight (5lbs), the second week, 6lbs. With Noah's help and her willingness, she finds herself becoming more and more comfortable at the gym. After the 11lb milestone she invites Noah out for a drink. This is where we find out the problem. Noah is 19 and therefore underage. Noah has guess Veronica to be about 22 or 23, it's not until she mentions that she's 28, that it all comes crashing down. But Noah is not your typical 19 year old (who is turning 20 in a week), he just likens numbers to air. It means nothing. When Veronica explains that she's nearly a decade older. He reminds that her 19 yo trainer got her to lose 11 lbs. Well he has a point! When Veronica shows up at the gym and Noah isn't there because of a leak in the roof at the garage that he lives in (it's quite a ferocious El Nino weather in LA), that she considers asking him if he'd like to rent a room in her house. She has three bedrooms and lives alone and wouldn't mind helping him out for bit. They've talked and she knows what his situation is like. When he agrees, things start to progress. Noah starts to notice Veronica more as she loses weight. She starts wearing clothes that are better suited for the gym, showing off curves that get the attention of the other guys in the gym. Of course that drives Noah crazy. Veronica is his. However, Veronica has a big issue with the age difference. She thinks that she can't have a relationship with him because they're in two different stages in their life. Noah doesn't believe that. He's a very old soul who just happens to be young. Veronica becomes wrapped up in Noah's life and he in hers. Although the heat is palpable, she does everything she can to not encourage him. Noah does everything he can to make the holidays that much better for her. Thanksgiving he makes a feast for her and her wall starts to crumble again. But when Noah heads over to his friend's Gio's house, Noah's holiday fuck buddy is there and she's got a car and is ready to break it in. In a moment of weakness, Noah takes off with Rita and well we know what happens there.

It's not until around the Christmas holidays that Veronica finds out about Rita and the jealousy ensues. Noah tries to explain that Rita means nothing and that Veronica means a lot more. Everything comes to a head on New Years Eve when Noah and Veronica's small gathering is crashed by a local gang. When one of the members make derogatory remark to Veronica, Noah goes after him and threatens him. When he heads back to Veronica and the party, the leader of the gang has come back and sucker punches Noah in a way that knocks him out. Once the guys and Veronica have Noah in his bed, he professes his love to Veronica and they finally kiss.

I loved Veronica and Noah's relationship. Age is nothing in the grand scheme of things. Noah teaches Veronica things that she never had with her ex-boyfriend. He makes her feel sexy and beautiful and young. But she's not willing to take the relationship that one step further. If she makes love to him, then their friendship has turned a corner and she's not willing to lose her best friend. With an ex-boyfriend trying to push his way back into her life (he left when her mother was dying because he couldn't deal with her depression. Yeah, great guy). Turns out that Veronica's ex was also the dean of the high school that Noah attended. Noah hates him with a passion and Derek has no qualms telling Veronica about Noah getting a girl pregnant, and drug trafficking. Of course, Derek may have stretched the truth a bit, but its enough to scare Veronica away from Noah. However, Noah, wants to know why she believes that piece of shit over him. (the irony here is that Derek is 8 years older than Roni, something that Noah let's her know repeatedly.) When he informs Veronica that he loves and that he's done, does Veronica do something about it. She gives herself to Noah. All of herself to him. A lovely contemporary love story that has everything in it. I love Elizabeth's style of writing. She enjoys writing alpha males who enjoy making love and having sex and falling completely and utterly in love.

I've read this one several times because I just love Noah in this story and his love for Veronica is amazing. I literally sigh every time I read it. He's this sexy alpha male who although is young, has lived an extremely hard life and is so mature for his age. Although there are factors that should and would keep the two apart, they manage to fight for what they both want. Noah is a sweet and caring person and Veronica has more love to bestow on him. Everything about this book was perfect. I've read the other book in the series, GIO, and I can't wait to see what happens with all of the guys at the 5th Street Gym.

4. Book Review: Thoughtless, S.C. Stephens

Reading Level:Mature Young Adult
Format:EBook
Publisher:Gallery Books 11/6/12 (Paperback) Ebook out now
Parasols:4
S.C. Stephens series Thoughtless, is a roller coaster, heart palpitating, pants wetting book.  It might be a bit cliched with the theme and plot, but she manages to overcome some of those cliches by really getting into the emotional aspect of the story. Stephens is by far becoming one of my favorite indie authors (although she has gotten a publishing deal), her books are phenomenal. She writes angst better than anyone I've ever read. And angst isn't easy to do. I absolutely adore this book and I highly, HIGHLY, recommend it to anyone who loves a great love story and one that will cause palpitations.

Kiera and Denny, are moving 2500 miles away from Ohio because Denny (who is Australian) has just graduated college and has a job at a very respectable ad agency in Seattle. Kiera is leaving her family for her boyfriend of two years. She's madly in love with him and will be transferring to the University of Washington with a pretty decent scholarship in tow. Luckily, Denny did a year exchange from Australia in high school, so he's staying with his friend Kellen Kyle. He, who happens to be a local rock star.

Although Kiera is not a virgin, Denny has been her first and only. Living with him is glorious. When Kiera first meets Kellen, she thinks he's extremely good looking, his band is fantastic, but he seem to overdo the whole sexuality when he's performing. He flirts with every woman in the audience and the women consider him their rock god. Denny, Kiera and Kellen have a really good relationship. Everything works out well. Kiera even gets a job at the bar that Kellen's band has a standing weekend gig. Plus, the it's the band's home away from home, so she sees the D-Bags a lot. (The band's name is The Douchebags, but if they want to go mainstream that will need to change.) Denny's job as an intern is going so well the company asks him to help start up an office in Tuscon, AZ. Kiera is crushed. He'll be gone for two months (they moved to Seattle in June). She tries to keep a brave face, but she's despondent. Kellen does try to get her out of her funk, by including her in band activities or watching a movie with her. Having dinner with her. Their friendship becomes stronger. His glances last a bit longer as does hers.

While attending and arts & music festival, Kellen stays close to Kiera, wrapping his arms around her waist. She rests her head on his chest. He holds her hand during crowds. Wins her a stuffed puppy, which he gives to a crying child whose ice cream has fallen. Kiera notices something changing. With Denny calling less and less, Kiera relies on Kellen to help her through her funk.

When Denny finally does call, Kiera is unhappy, missing him, not sure what is going on between her and Kellen. However, Denny drops a bombshell. The agency has offered him a permanent position in Tuscon and he's accepted. Kiera is livid. One because he took the job days ago, two, he didn't consult her, and three she couldn't just leave school, Seattle, etc. Denny tells her that he'll wait for her to finish school and then she can come to Tuscon. Pissed off she ends the relationship.

And then comes the drinking. And the tears, and more drinking and more sobs. Kellen arrives home and seeing Kiera in a state, questions her. She refuses to tell him, but then he manages to get it out of her.  The only thing to help a broken heart? Tequila, and more tequila. Then there is touching and licking, oh, and don't forget the kissing. Kiera wakes up the next day, naked, hung over and not in her bedroom.

Trying to remember the night before it comes back to her in painful flashes. But the one thing she remembers is that it was amazing. Kellen is a bit of a man whore when it comes to women. When we learn how many women he's been with (in the biblical sense it's mind blowing). Kiera manages to get to work and being unable to do anything leaves work early. To wallow over her break up with Denny and her night with Kellen. While sound asleep, her bedroom door opens and Kiera is petrified that Kellen will be kicking her out. But it turns out to be Denny who has given up his dream in Tuscon to be with Kiera.

Kiera is devastated that Denny gave everything up for her, that she cheated on him with his best friend. (and her best friend as well.)

Although there are ups and downs in the strained relationship with Kellen and Kiera; Denny remains oblivious. Kellen has given Kiera the cold shoulder; turns out Kellen came home the night Denny did and heard the two of them making love. As much as Kellen has been an ass to Kiera, he finally comes to the realization that he has to change things. So he invites his two roommates out to listen to another local band at another local pub. Denny has accepted another job that he hates so he's been moody and listless, Kiera is miserable. During the night out, Denny gets a call from his boss (who has him on constant speed dial), and goes off to take it. Kellen turns to Kiera and tells her he's leaving. Sensing what he means, she follows after him begging him not to go, that she needs him. Needs his friendship. It all comes to head in the parking lot when they crash together, lips, arms, legs. They fuck right there in the open espresso stand. It's rough, it's passionate, it's crazy and nuts. It takes them to great highs that it all comes crashing down as soon as they finish.

Kiera more confused then ever finds herself drawn more and more to Kellen. She's not that gorgeous beauty that he's used to, but she's pretty enough.  Kiera and Kellen sneak kisses, and hugs and holding hands. Brushing against each other.

Kellen's man whore comes out and he starts bringing women home after Kiera explains that she can't stop making love to her boyfriend. During one heated exchange, while Denny is asleep in the next room, Kellen and Kiera make love. Yet, she slips back to Denny feeling horrible and unsure.

It all comes to a head, when Kellen finally tells Kiera that he's fallen in love with her and she has to make a decision. Kiera wants steady and safe, but she wants the thrill that is Kellen. The passion that she feels for Kellen she doesn't feel for Denny. Kellen give Kiera a simple necklace of a guitar with a diamond in it. Knowing that Kellen is leaving again she begs him not to. And again they give in to the basest of desires, but this time, they get caught. Denny has witnessed the whole exchange.

Denny was never the bad guy. Kellen was never the bad guy and Kiera was never the bad guy. Sometimes, things happen for a reason and we just can't argue with the way things pan out. Kiera felt guilty that Denny gave up everything for her, but she did the same. Kellen didn't mean to fall in love with Kiera but she brought out feelings in him that he'd been searching for many years. The one thing that Denny noticed was the love between the two. When Denny originally left for Tuscon, he warned Kellen to keep his hands off of her. She was his. But how was he supposed to know that it would go both ways?

After everything is said and done and Kellen gets a pretty good beating from Denny, just as Denny is about to kick Kellen while he was down, Kiera jumps in front of Kellen, getting a very heavy toe-steeled boot in the head.

Denny is devastated that he injured her, Kellen is all broken up (literally, broken ribs and arm), he refused to fight back. Unfortunately for Kiera who has been out for days, both guys break up with her. Thankfully her sister has come back (Kiera thinks her sister and Kellen slept together) and finds an apartment, and ironically gets a job at Hooters.

Kiera had an affair, she loved two guys but one perhaps a bit more. Although the sex is a bit more explicit in this story, I still don't see why it couldn't be for mature ya. There's a passing mention of pot, but none of the characters really do drugs. They drink and have sex. Lots of sex.

Sex is portrayed in this story as a way to get close to the other person, to express their love for each other. Kellen, Kiera and Denny are great characters and each have flaws.

There is also a sequel to this Effortless and I just found out the other day that a third book will be coming out in March of 2013 called Reckless.

5. Book Recommendations

I know I've been really lax in posting or blogging, but I have been reading up a storm and I can't seem to stop. I mean to the point where I barely leave the house and my ereader is constantly in my hands. Thankfully I can stop for minutes at a time to clean up around the house and delegate chores to the kiddies.

We did have one major problem here a few weeks ago involving my dog. She developed a pretty nasty skin infection on her back and I had to rush her to the vet. My poor dog was so miserable, I just didn't know what to do. Vet thinks she might've gotten poison ivy and with the bacteria on her tongue just exacerbated the problem til she had a full out infection. With some antibiotics and antihistamine spray, she survived, but then last week she had a mild seizure that scared the hell out of us. Back to the vet where they did some blood work and everything came back fine.

So anyway, back to my original reason for finally posting! Like I mentioned I wanted to recommend some books for my readers that I think they'll enjoy. Not all of these are young adult titles, but they could be crossover hits.

The number one book I recommend is COLLISION COURSE by S.C. Stephens. She is fast becoming one of my favorite indie authors. I've already talked about her other mature young adult series THOUGHTLESS & EFFORTLESS. CC is the third book by her that I read. This book just took my breath away and made me cry at times. I'm such a sap when it comes to well-written heartfelt books. This one has so much heart it's  crazy.

The second one I recommend is PUSHING THE LIMITS by Katie McGarry. What a brilliant book. Another one that made me cry. I love stories that push that envelope and make me realize that there are people out there who may come across as bad ass, but are really just seriously damaged and need help. When two of those people find each other, it becomes an explosive love story that just pulls you in.

Another one I highly recommend is by another indie author, Georgia Cates, GOING UNDER. Similar in themes to PUSHING THE LIMITS, with a different outcome. I found myself completely enjoying this book and enjoying Georgia Cates' writing. She has a lot of talent.

I finally finished the PERFECT CHEMISTRY books by Simone Elkeles. I read the first one probably two or three years ago and just never got around to the last two. Even though I got to meet the model for the first book at BEA and Simone, I just never picked up the books. Silly me. I was crazy! I think out of all three of the books, Carlos' story was my favorite. Luis was a close second.

FLAT-OUT LOVE by Jessica Park is another great story that I totally enjoyed. And not because it takes place in Boston and the opening scene is in my hometown! Jamaica Plain never gets any love in books! This story crushes the heart, but then it fills it up with so much love that you finish the book completely breathless. Julie, Celeste and Matty and even Finn are amazing characters that will have you begging for more. While sighing through tears.

SLAMMED AND POINT OF RETREAT by Colleen Hoover has just been picked up by Simon & Schuster and I'm so glad that good things are happening to Colleen. This story has everything. Love, poetry slams, teachers, high school, love and death. Layken and Will are amazing characters whose love is totally not acceptable. Even though Will is 21 and Lake is 18. There are unforeseen circumstances that pull them apart and one very serious reason that keeps them together. The sequel wraps up everything in a nice package.

The next two books I recommend is more for the older crowd. SEDUCING CINDERELLA and THE SIREN. Two very different books, but both are extremely well-written. I find myself liking books where the male character is a sports person. There's just something so alpha male about sports figures. SEDUCING CINDERELLA is about a UFC fighter who is undergoing rehab for a shoulder injury and it turns out that the rehab therapist is his best friend's younger sister. She's lusting after the orthopedic surgeon who doesn't even look in her direction. So when Reid offers to help Lucie get her doctor, things happen between these two that they never expected to fall for each other. It's a great take on MY FAIR LADY and CINDERELLA.

THE SIREN is a literate version of erotica I guess. Basically Nora is a writer of erotic books and is looking to have her books mainstreamed by a well-known publishing house. Because she is a good writer and the house wants her, they give her MS to the prickiest asshole who could get a damn good story out of her. Her editor is a hard-ass from London who is called the London Fog. But see Nora also has a secret. She is a dominatrix at a club that was all but created for her. Zach offers to help Nora rewrite her book in six weeks, and then he may sign her contract. This book has everything. It's literate, it's sexy and it's well written it makes 50 Shades look like drivel (which it totally is!).  Nora's secret and her housemate (the absolutely lovely and virginal Wes) threaten to ruin everything she could have with the publishing house. Plus with Zach's marital issues, everything can be blown wide apart. Which knowing Nora, is exactly how she likes it.

Of course I also recommend KA Linde's AVOIDING COMMITMENT. This book hit such a nerve with me that at times I had to put the book down because it cut close to home. I had a tempestuous relationship from 18-28 with the same person one that nearly destroyed me and I knew how intricate a devastating relationship like that is. If you've never had a relationship like that, you might find the story a bit annoying, but it happens. All to much.

I hope all of you enjoy my recommendations and I hope to write some reviews soon. I also have some books to mail out. I haven't been to the post office. I also have a book I've been sitting on for a few weeks to give away. I'll try to get that posted soon.

Listen, I love comments and people who just stop by to say hello. So if you want, why don't you recommend a book to me that I haven't read. you can always check my goodreads page to see what I have read and what I haven't. I don't care if its YA, Mature YA, New Adult, Erotica (well-written please!), etc... I've still read a bunch of crap too. I know that I have to get through the crap to find the diamonds in the rough.

6. Continuation of Mature YA and New Adult (with SPOILERS)

I've been thinking about how to address this subject because I mainly review young adult, however, I think most of my readership tends to be much older than the teens. I think that's just the way it goes. So, just to let everyone know I will be talking about sex, making love, fucking and anything else you want to call it. So be warned.

There's always been a divide between people who think sex doesn't belong in the young adult world (explicit), obviously, some of the antagonist and protags have sex but it seems to be behind the scenes. Or it can be written in a way that if you weren't quite understanding what was going on, you could gloss over it. One example I'll use is Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely. Ash (our heroine) and Seth (the guy who is crazy about her) talk about sex. He's had it. Plenty of times. She hasn't. They're debating taking the relationship one step further. They've been getting closer and Melissa quietly states that Seth is kissing Ash where she's never been kissed before. Now, I'm not an idiot and I know that she was talking about oral sex. However, with her carefully worded sentence a naive teen would've just read it and moved on. So sex is there.

In Vampire Academy: Shadow Kiss. Dimitri and Rose finally give in to their feelings and during a moment when Rose is completely losing it, thinking she's going crazy,  Dimitri is there to help her through it. But once she comes back to him. They make love. It's sweet, it's romantic and it's about time. We all sighed when those two crazy kids finally, FINALLY did the deed. Albeit, it was a short-lived happiness, but that's another story to tell.

So two examples for sex in YA. I know kinda boring, but it excites some teens.

I remember when I was a teen (long before the YA market exploded), I was reading Jackie Collins books under my blankets with a flashlight. There was something intriguing reading about the rich and famous and how they would jump from bed to bed. She, too, was very descriptive in her sex scenes. If the teen is old enough to know about sex and what it entails, then they're old enough to read about it.

I think a sex scene can be written extremely romantically and one thing the authors that are writing these books, have that down pat. Why shouldn't two people who love each other make love? If it's there in the story, then in between the lines of said story the two characters will eventually fall into bed. Why leave it at the end of the chapter to start a new chapter that begins with a glowing couple all sweated out and exhilarated? Obviously, some authors want to leave it up to the imagination of the reader to think of what sort of stuff is going on. But they're still writing about sex.

What's a passionate relationship without making love? Probably not as passionate as one would think. I think the reason why vampires became all the rage was because they could be sexual and sensual, and honestly, who doesn't want someone gorgeous sucking on your neck?!? I always took vampirism as a metaphor for sex, the need to taste, touch, own, possess. We know that Bella and Edward tease each other merciliessly with sex. His smouldering look, her touch, his kiss, etc. Even in Dracula, by Bram Stoker, he is a wholly sexual character.

With the advent of mature young adult and new adult (which I think is for those age groups 18-27)? We have characters who give in to their basest nature. These are college age kids who are finally free from parents' thumbs and want to enjoy life.  They fuck, they have oral sex, they enjoy being with one another.

Unless you're doing the deed with your boyfriend's best friend. Then all sorts of shit hits the fan. Interesting segue for the book I just read and cannot recommend enough. If you're a fan of Beautiful Disaster, I think you'll like this one just as much.

7. Mature Young Adult and New Adult Genre (With SPOILERS!!!)

I know I haven't been blogging much lately, but boy, have I been reading up a storm. I've found some new authors that I have become addicted to and I just cannot stop reading this genre! I guess you can call it mature young adult because the characters are older than your typical 17. They're either in college or have a job, and they have sex. The language can be harsh, but you know what? I'm okay with that. Some might even call it New Adult. There really isn't a genre for those between the ages of 18-26 (the college age years).

The first book I read in that genre was BEAUTIFUL DISASTER. You can say I became addicted to the story. I've heard a lot of people hemming and hawing because of the theme of the book. But you know what to me it was like a fantasy. As much as women are independent and strive to be their own person, there is one tiny bit of us that wants to be wholly encompassed by a guy. We want that bad boy with the tats who has his own fight club and is successful at it. There's something incredibly sexy with having a guy want to own you body and soul and isn't afraid to let everyone around them know it. Lot's of people will say that isn't a healthy relationship. Then again, what constitutes a healthy relationship? A peck on the cheek in the morning after coffee? Reading the newspaper with your partner before you both head off to work? Sometimes I think women want that tempestuous relationship. Why is Twilight, 50 Shades, Bared to you so popular? I'm not a psychologist at all, but I think reading these books unleashes an inner fantasy. Women for some reason want to be taken of and in return wants to do the taking of. Whether it's cleaning, cooking, or doing whatever needs to be done in the bedroom. Travis and Abby may not have the healthiest of relationships, but what they did have was fantastic.

After reading Jamie McGuire's book, I was recommended Tammara Webber by Andrea Thompson (Bookish Andrea). I'm still thanking her a thousand times over for that. Although, Tammara's book was a bit light and frothy compared to BEAUTIFUL DISASTER. It was still something that tempted me and I found myself looking forward to the next in the series. Her latest book EASY delves into a bit of a darker topic. Date rape at college. But also finding yourself as well. It amazes me how many girls will follow their high school boyfriends to college to be with them. But because they're getting older and needs are changing, they find themselves suddenly alone at a school they really didn't want to attend, trying to fend off a would-be-rapist. But with all that happening, falling in love with the right guy is something could possibly happen. Especially when that guy is everywhere.

The next series I read was from Elizabeth Reyes. THE MORENO BROTHER'S. Um, yeah, talk about alpha males to the max. First up in the series is the story of the youngest brother, Angel. He comes from a long line of sexy Moreno's. His older brothers are in college and he's still in high school. He's popular, the girls love him and he's very approachable. But the
