So far, I’ve only found one — Billy Tucci! Tragically, Tucci did not call out other comics folks, so the charity meme has not yet spread to out part of the world. But let’s give Billy a hand for doing it!
In case you missed it, the ice bucket challenge is meant to draw attention to ALS, aka Lou Gehrig disease. When called out, you must either dump a bucket of ice over yourself or donate $100 to the ALS Foundation. Most celebs who have been doing this do both. You make a mideo of yours;f getting dumbed on, and call out someone to take the challenge next at the end of your video.
It’s a fun way to while away the summer—somehow I don’t think this would be as popular in November. People who have done it so far include Lady Gaga, Robert Downey Jr., Justin Bieber (he didn’t actually use ice), Steven Spielberg, Carrie Underwood, Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez, the NY Mets, the NY Jets, and a bunch of nerdlebrities folks like Tom Hiddleston (very popular),
Chris Pratt, Nathan Fillion, James Gunn and Stephen Amell.
I found Dave Bautista’s by far the most impressive however.
When we look back at the summer of 2014, will it be as the time that famous people dumped ice on themselves? In these turmoil filled days, it’s nice to have something giving and fun and silly to talk about.
Meanwhile, comic folk, step up!
UPDATED: OK OK, I missed Brian Bendis:
Who calls out Fraction and Oeming.
And Frank Tieri, although I can’t find his video,
who called out Scott Snyder:
I’m told Dynamite’s Nick Barrucci also took the challenge.
So NOW we’re getting somewhere!
Billy Tucci’s Shi was one of the leading ladies of the Chromium Era of Comics. According to a press release, the character has over 3 million copies in print as she celebrates her 20th anniversary this year. Tucci is kicking off a 20th Anniversary Tour this weekend at the London Super Con, and is releasing some convention variants including two LSCC exclusive books, seen below. While Tucci has been known in recent times mostly for his stunningly researched war books, he’s bringing Shi back later this year with a new mini-series: Hatachi.
And here’s those exclusives:
“Shi – Way of the Warrior #1” LSCC 20th Anniversary edition
and the “LSCC Shi – Sketch A Story” Sketchbook.
Both books are limited to only 25 editions with each signed and numbered by Tucci. LSCC will also see the debut of the “The Shi – Way of the Warrior #1 20th Anniversary Sketch Cover Edition” and all-new exclusive Shi lithographs based on the above art.
.
Billy Tucci is well known for his various military comics, displaying a realism of both art and storytelling rarely seen in comics. (I recommend highly “Sgt. Rock: The Lost Battalion”, based on actual events in World War II.)
Now, he’s announcing his latest work, a non-fiction account of controversial private security firm Blackwater Security Consulting’s experiences in Iraq and elsewhere.
I’ll make no judgment until I see the book, but no matter what, it’s most likely to be quite a read! If you’re at CCI:SD, stop by his booth at #1801 and pick up a preview, as well as admire his other work!
The press release and samples follow. Click on images to enlarge.

“The Blackwater Chronicles” by Artist/Writer Billy Tucci. The Inside Story, Now A Major New Graphic Novel Series.
Writer/Artist Billy Tucci, (creator of “Shi”, “A Child Is Born” and re-energizer of the classic “Sergeant Rock”) will release a sneak preview edition of “The Blackwater Chronicles” at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Only 200 copies per day are allowed to distributed to the 130,000 attendees expected. Only 1000 posters and sneak preview books have been printed for the event.
“The Blackwater Chronicles ” are a new series of non-fiction illustrated books set for release during 2013 that detail the real-life adventures of the controversial private security company. The first book in the series is based on Robert Young Pelton’s “Licensed to Kill, Hired Guns in the War on Terror”.
Billy Tucci has applied his skills to capture extraordinary realism and intense emotion to bring these brutal real-world experiences to the graphic novel genre.
“Like most people, all I had heard or read concerning private security contractors was that they were reckless cowboys whose actions in Iraq and Afghanistan were considered almost criminal by the media who weren’t there. Then I read the amazing first-hand experiences in Robert Young Pelton’s book, “Licensed To Kill”. Pelton lived, rode and flew under fire with Blackwater and other PSCs on their daily missions. His book and the men he introduced me to provided incredible insight to the men behind the myth and the sacrifices they made” Tucci stated.
The first book entitled “Blackwater Bridge” will detail the dangers of the Mamba Team, a group of unsung rogues, misfits and heroes who ran the most dangerous road in Baghdad in slow-moving South African armored vehicles. Inside the terrifying story arc is a deeper tale. An ex-Marine haunted by a delayed flight to Iraq. An incident that prevented him from being slaughtered in Fallujah but sent someone in his place.
