2. David Winner's BRILLIANT ORANGE: The Neurotic Genius of Dutch Soccer Released for EURO 2008 Championship

David Winner's fascinating examination of Dutch soccer, Brilliant Orange, is now available in paperback from Overlook. Just in time for Euro 2008, the book includes a new introduction by Franklin Foer, author of How Soccer Explains the World. After the stunning 3-0 upset of Italy on Monday, the Netherlands squad faces France tomorrow in Bern.

3. The more things change.....

BH went underground and came up with the right box of family photos. I'm not exactly sure why I'm doing this, but babies make people do strange things.

This photo was taken in 1933. The baby is my mother, held by her mother, with her mother to the left and the grande dame, Hundreds-Great-Grandma Ida to the right. (It's OK, you can say it. I think Grandma Ida looks scary as hell, too.)
