1. Australian YA: Meet Frances Watts, author of The Peony Lantern

Thanks for talking to Boomerang Books about The Peony Lantern, Frances. It’s my pleasure. Where are you based and how involved are you in the world of children’s and YA lit? I’m based in Sydney. I’ve been involved in the children’s lit world for many years now, through membership of the Children’s Book Council of […]

2. Go Strolling

Ahh. The sweet smell of Dencorub and muscle linament filled the early moring train carriage. It must be the Sydney Running Festival - and then when we walked onto Milson's Point Station we definitely knew we were in the right place. Not only was the aroma so very, very strong but there were a gazillion bodies dressed in varying forms of running gear (and lots of lycra). And no - we weren't running. We were in the family and community groups section of the running festival. We strolled across the Sydney Harbour Bridge as part of the orange-clad Books In Homes crew. It was an absolute thrill to be part of the team (thanks Hester for organising our gathering) and we must have stood out because as we crossed the finish line (46 minute stroll) at the Botanical Gardens our team was congratulated over the PA system! Yeah for Books in Homes!

Not sure about Books in Homes? It is one of the organisations which I am delighted to be involved in. Books in Homes Australia’s vision is to re-awaken a sense of wonder in children and excitement in parents, by creating an Australia where every child and family has access to books of choice at home. There are Books in Homes Role Models across the country. We volunteer to inspire young readers and are featured in the Books in Homes catalogues, participate in school Book Giving Assemblies, and promote the enjoyment of reading ... something that is right down my alley!

Find out more about Books in Homes here.
We are most definitley walking the bridge again with Books in Homes in next year!

3. Hey Doonside - Books in Homes

Hey Doonside Public School --

What a buzz it was to be out there with you today and sharing BOOKS and your Literacy Day! There are some absolutely wonderful books that you are reading at your school and there were some really wonderful characters dressed up there - from the big and little kids!! Congratulations! I hope you liked my short little tales and me wandering throguh your assembly rather than standing at the front of the hall at the podium. It is much more fun getting really close to you all. And thanks for the BBQ sausage sandwich too ... I feasted on mine as soon as I jumped into the car.

I am thrilled to be one of the National Ambassadors (along with a host of other great Aussie kids authors and illustrators) for Books in Homes. It is a wonderful initiative that enables underprivileged children to receive a bag of books - from titles they choose FREE! In fact at the end of the year the kids have nine BRAND NEW BOOKS that they have chosen - they receive a pack three times a year. How awesome!
Three cheers to the corporate sponsors and government initiatives that provide the financial assistance to enable this to happen. We HAVE to have fluent and active readers and lovers of books!!

choosing from these titles

smile!

More info on Books in Homes:

The Books in Homes Programme was originally inspired by Maori author Alan Duff who wrote the widely acclaimed book “Once Were Warriors”. It was founded 21 years ago in New Zealand after realising that failure in adult life often stems from childhoods spent in homes without books. <
