1. The Devil’s best tunes

It’s been said that the Devil has all the best tunes. If this is true, he likes to keep a conspicuously low profile. While songs of praise for Jesus, God, Krishna, Buddha, the Virgin Mary, and a host of other deities, saints, and semi-deities abound, Satan is seldom properly hymned.

2. What I’ve Learned: Black Widow

BW-Natasha-Phil-NotoI was incredibly, completely, absolutely flat broke during my undergraduate film studies at NYU. Broke like skipping meals to afford rides on the Subway. Broke like working two college jobs, with all of it going to tuition and it never being enough. Broke like having to choose between living in a pest-infested room in Harlem, or not finishing college at all because I couldn’t afford to pay for the dormitories. I was angry, but my anger was a cloak that hid my shame, shame based on a fear that if I was indeed good enough to tell stories, somehow this would have been easier.

3. Samnee and Waid Reunite in an Ongoing Black Widow Series

She was a spy working for the Russian government who defected and became one of the most important S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to ever be a part of the program — now she has support from one of the strongest creative teams in modern comics. This morning via Entertainment Weekly Marvel announced the next project for interior artist Chris […]

Quietly, one of the best current super-hero series being published is Nathan Edmondson & Phil Noto’s run on Black Widow. I first noticed Noto’s work on Marvel’s Uncanny X-Force, a few years back. His work brings a nice combination of fine art & design aesthetics to mainstream comic books. One of Noto’s earliest and most frequent collaborators was writing team extraordinaire Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti; starting off with a number of issues on their classic Jonah Hex run in the mid-2000’s, then projects like Superman/Supergirl: Maelstrom and Trigger Girl 6 for Image’s Creator-Owned series.

Phil Noto and writer Gerry Duggan received an Eisner award nomination in 2011 for their original comic series The Infinite Horizon, which tells a post-apocalyptic war story inspired by Homer’s Odyssey.

Phil Noto has worked for Disney Animation, as well as a concept artist for video games, including the mega-hit BioShock. Noto continues to be one of the most sought after cover artists in comics. He recently created a series of classic magazine inspired covers for Marvel.

You can follow the latest Noto news and see the newest art on his tumblr site here.

5. Black Widow has formed a Girl Group, take a listen!

Scar Jo singing

Scarlett Johansson has occasionally dabbled in music, be it in a fun little karaoke scene in Lost In Translation (one of my top ten favorite movies of all time), or putting out an album of Tom Waits covers.

In between having a child and filming a ton of great movies, Johansson found the time to start a “Girl Group” called The Singles, that includes Este Haim, Julia Haltigan, Kendra Morris, and Holly Miranda. Their first song, “Candy”, which you can hear over at Vice, was produced by TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek.

There’s some serious 80’s Synth-Pop influence there, and a danceable beat. Fun!

6. Agent Carter show runners reveal Black Widow connection

carter1 Agent Carter show runners reveal Black Widow connection

NOTE: Spoilers for Agent Carter to follow

It’s not often show runners confirm fan speculation before a plot point is revealed on-screen, but that’s exactly what happened when Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas — the team behind Agent Carter — talked with Eric Goldman of IGN. In an interview posted yesterday, the dynamic duo who helm the Peggy Carter vehicle revealed that Carter’s recently introduced girl-next-door Dottie “is a product of the Black Widow Program.” While Dottie showed off some moves that recall Scarlett Johansson‘s action-spy Natasha Romanoff in last Tuesday’s fourth episode of Agent Carter, her identity had not yet been confirmed in-story.

Butters also said that Marvel Studios and Marvel TV have been pretty open to large, impactful ideas: “It is a big idea to go and say, ‘What if it’s the last remaining sample of [Captain America’s] blood and can we put that in the show? They’ve been so excited about these ideas and so supportive. Us showing Dottie as a precursor to the Black Widow Program, Captain America’s blood, these are big things in this universe that they’re willing to let us play with.”

It’s certainly possible the Black Widow connection was publicized in hopes of peaking the interest of more MCU fans by revealing the show’s intentions to connect to the films.  Despite considerable critical success, the pastiche prequel to Captain America: The Winter Solider has seen it’s ratings drop consistently since it’s two-hour premiere on January 6: from a 1.9 to a 1.3, which represents a loss of several million viewers. While Agent Carter‘s ratings are currently comparable to those of companion show Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D., should Carter’s numbers continue to decline, it could put hopes of a second season on ice.

10. NYCC’14: New Black Widow Project and Gamora Series

By David Nieves

During Marvel’s “Women of Marvel” panel it was revealed popular YA author Margaret Stohl will be writing a new YA novel style Black Widow book for 2015. When talking about the project Stohl had this to say, “This is the badassiest thing I’ve ever been asked to work on in my life. Black Widow is the very best hot mess I know. She kicks ass, she’s more of a Wolverine than a Captain America.”

Also on the panel was Stacey Lee, who is working on something that will be announced at the Spider-Verse panel at 4 PM later! Which could in fact be the recent Spider-Gwen book announced earlier this week.

To round out the announcement side, the panel revealed a new Gamora series written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy Movie) and the cover for issue 1 is by Francesco Mattina. Pearlman said, “It delves into who Gamora is, see her relationships with everyone, struggling with her past – it’s going to be amazing and I’m so excited.”
