1. Mother of the Bride

Been sort of distracted from my children's book world this week by happy family matters, including a senior recital and choir concert and competition.

One upcoming event will be the launch of Operation Wedding Dress. We've already watched Father of the Bride#1 and Father of the Bride#2, for Treebeard's sake. I enjoy the Steve Martin version, in part because the family lives in a town where I used to live, a long time ago. I have been seeking the wisdom of wedding gurus and sensei who have been through the process.
Entling no. 1 and I have been cybershopping, "hey, look at this one," but we have not yet ventured into an actual salon de wedding.

These ABC Primetime pieces have given me pause.

This one: "...a challenge for the compulsive"
Ha, I'm not compulsive. On the other hand, a control freak? Yes.

No pressure: "...that pinnacle purchase"
I better bring tissues.

Finally, I think that if NewsBoy popped out and asked me, "Mom, what did you really think?" after testing my "honesty" this way I would answer, "I think I am going to rap you on the head with that boom mic and throttle you with this veil.

Thank you to AFriendIndeed who pointed me to the episode.

2. Giving Back

Our community has shown great support for my family over the last few years due to the children’s illnesses. While I was relieved that we had some help, I felt guilty accepting it. Then someone once said to me,”When someone gives to you-it’s as much of a blessing for them as it is for you. Don’t turn them down and take that blessing away from them.”

I didn’t know the true meaning of that until tonight. A friend of mine had her house broken into a few days ago. The thief stole just about everything.

Then I found out that even the children’s things were gone.  I looked around my house at the evidence of all those who helped us before. A generous community plus three children equals toys to the 10th power.

I called my friend and offered to give some of the things we had. My children were not just happy to share - they were excited. When my friend came to pick the toys and books up, the kids practically ran her over at the door.

I watched in awe as my friend smiled and looked over the large pile of toys, with my kids showing her everything. I usually only see that glow on people’s faces at Christmas time.

It was nice to give back to others in their time of need. My friend was right before. Giving is a blessing for the giver as well as the receiver. Maybe even more so.

3. Eight Slice of My Life –> Sharing With My Students

This will be the cover page for the eight slice of life stories I wrote this past week. I’m going to be sharing them with my students so that they, too, can take part in the March Slice of Life Story Challenge. (I’m going to discuss this during the News & Announcements Part [...]

4. IF : The Horizon

This is the time of year when many people complain about what they don't have. They make huges lists of material 'must haves" for Santa to bring or for their parents to buy because they think life will be better with them.

For others, this is a time of year when we remember the less fortunate. Those without food, shelter or warmth. Those who are battling life-threatening illnesses. Those who don't have any family members left and feel totally alone. Big TVs, Ipods, computers, diamonds or fancy cars wouldn't fill their needs or their hearts.

What all of us need to keep in mind in any of these situations is that people care. I still believe that good outweighs bad. So let's remember the less fortunate in this season of giving. Let's show them that hope is always on the horizon.

Wishing you all who celebrate, A Very Merry Christmas. Sharing with you week after week is one of my greatest gifts of all!

( And for those of you who know my secret signature, the 3 cypress trees are always in my heart. They represent the 3 cats we drove from Rhode Island to California with 14 years ago. I miss them dearly and feel blessed to have had them in my life for so many years. Merry Christmas, boys.)
Done for the Illustration Friday prompt, "Horizon." acrylic, Prismacolor pencils on bristol. ( click to see hope on the horizon!)

5. question: book club book swapping?

A reader writes “I’ve volunteered to be on a committee to develop our regional book club in a box program. Are you aware of a network where libraries can trade or otherwise share book club or (fill in your city/campus here) reads program books? We have virtually zero money and need fifteen copies of each title; our current titles have been practically exhausted by our readers. Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated.” If anyone has experience with something like this, if you could leave some information in the comments, thanks.

tagless!
