1. Passport2Purity

I have heard for some time now how great Family Life's Passport2Purity program is for families.  When I was given the chance to review the program - I jumped at it.  I love the whole concept - time away with your preteen to talk through tough topics like sexuality and purity.  We need that and often don't make the time to do it with our kids.

The kit comes with  a CD Set, a travel journal, and a tour guide.  It is so well laid-out that a parent can really spend very little prep time to make the weekend a success - prep is important, but I wanted to encourage parents that it won't be a huge effort that will bog you down.  You walk through the tour guide page by page and pre-view the videos they feel the parent should view ahead of time to be ready for the weekend.  The weekend is laid out so carefully - I love the time set aside for fun activities and yet, they do give you a great timeline of how to effectively get everything accomplished within the time frame.  All of the parts of the kit are updated and not only look modern, but even the DVD's are well-done and will appeal to our teens.  Having a tool like this is such a blessing.

Our daughter is a bit young for this and we have not used it yet, but I can not wait to spend this time together learning and growing.  I highly recommend this easy-to-follow way for parents to guide their children into sexual purity.

I was sent a copy of the kit for review by the publisher for an honest review on my blog.

2. The Christian Mama's Guide to Parenting a Toddler

I read a lot of parenting books. I grew up in a home that needed a lot of work, so I'm at least attempting to do some of that same work as E is growing up, rather than after some damage has been done. I certainly won't be perfect and I'm not saying that parenting books are the answer to everything, but I gain a few tips from each and hopefully that builds up to a decent amount of knowledge eventually. This parenting gig is HARD.

I was sent The Christian Mama's Guide to Parenting a Toddler from Book Sneeze to review and was anxious to read something that was aimed, not only at my child's age group, but also based on God's word. Unfortunately, it fell a little short to me.

The chapters range from Food Fights to Bedtime Battles and Tantrums 401. A lot of material is covered, but it's not exactly new material. There just isn't anything fresh and exciting about the topics talked about or even the way the information is presented.

I did love the Scripture verses scattered throughout the text and the personal experiences of several moms and dads and different situations they were in with their children.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the book, in fact, I'd buy it for a friend's baby shower in a heartbeat. If I hadn't read a bunch of other books on the same subject, I think I'd really enjoy it, I just didn't find myself learning anything new.

The book is a part of a series that includes different age levels, so if this sounds like something you may enjoy and you're looking for a book on babies or older children, author Erin MacPherson has those for you too!

3. A Dream So Big review

After the death of their newborn son, Steve and Patty Peifer pack up their family and head to Africa for a short-term mission assignment as dorm parents, hoping to process their loss and begin to heal. Wanting to turn the pain they were experiencing into something positive, they set out on a journey of self-discovery that ended up completely changing their lives and having each one of them fall in love with Africa and its people.

After being plunged into the depths of the poverty, disease, and hunger in Kenya and realizing they had an ability to truly do something about it, the Peifer family turned their short-term assignment into a full-time missionary life. Their children loved Africa, as did they, and through the Rift Valley Academy the family was able to begin providing daily lunches for Kenyan children -- ultimately working up to being able to feed 20,000 children.

Not simply a book for Christians wanting to read about missionaries, this is a book we all could learn from. A regular American family set out to heal from a tragic loss and was able to change the lives of thousands and thousands of children born into poverty. Wanting to make a tiny difference in the world turned into a huge project reaching so many kids and families.

Being the mother of a child in heaven myself, I loved that they turned their hardship into a great thing for the world. That being said, I did find parts of the book overly wordy -- stories being told that didn't seem to have a whole lot of connection to the main point of the book -- and it was definitely a little long for what seemed necessary for me.

Still a great book, just needed a little extra editing.

Thanks to Zondervan for the review copy!

4. 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess

Every once in a great while, a book comes along that change the way I view my life and how I've been living it. The latest book to do that was 7 by Jen Hatmaker. Now, I'm sure the author didn't mean for her book to leave me blubbering in tears, but she took a few thoughts and emotions that I'd been battling with for a long time and put them into actual words -- a feat that I never thought could be accomplished -- and, as a result, I'm making a few positive changes, despite the difficulty in doing so.

Hatmaker basically identified 7 key areas of excess within her family's lifestyle and addressed each of those areas over a period of 7 months, drastically attempting to reduce their food, clothing, spending, media, possessions, waste, and stress. Obviously some areas were much more difficult than others, but the experiment was amazing in showing how most people in the world might live compared to how many of us live every day and just how wrong that is.

I think, as Americans, we often forget that most of the world lives in extreme poverty, without access to 15 pairs of shoes in their closet, an overflowing pantry, and e-readers and iPads. Hatmaker's writing is incredibly eye-opening, not just as a reminder of the blessings we have, but also as to what is really wrong with the way many of us think and feel we are "entitled" to for working hard every day.

I've been committed to reducing our "excess" for the few months after reading The Hole in Our Gospel by Richard Stearns. I've been slowing reducing the amount of clothing in my closet and extra "stuff" I've been holding onto for years, convinced that it will be of use at some point. Donating those things to people in need felt great, but what was more important was the weight I felt lifted after getting rid of the mindset that I need tangible items to feel happy. Hatmaker helps to expand upon that thought by explaining why God is where our focus should be and not on the extra. The people with nothing should be our focus rather than trying to figure out where to take our next vacation or whether we should get an e-reader in addition to our iPad.

She also talks about the power of the churches we attend and how that coincides with our feelings on excess. This topic was the most heart-stopping to me out of the entire book. Since living here, we've attended a church that we really like, but have never fallen in love with and I could never pinpoint exactly why. When people would ask us what we loved about our church, I often only had one answer: "the worship music is AMAZING." While great worship music is all well and good, there should be a deeper answer and we are absolutely not getting that where we currently are.

Hatmaker talks about the concept of a "barefoot" church and now Aaron and I are once again on the search for a new place with that very concept in mind. I want a barefoot church, free of excess, focusing on the right things and one that "gets the point" as Hatmaker says. It's very emotional to move on after all this time, but I'm so very thankful to the author for finally opening my eyes to what was wrong with our thinking and our actions.

Even if you are not a Christian and aren't looking for a big spiritual revelation, I highly recommend picking up this book. It gives excellent tips on reducing excess in these 7 key areas and I cannot say enough how good it feels to do some of these things.

5. The Purpose Driven Life 10th Anniversary

I don't talk about my beliefs often on the blog, though I never shy away from saying I'm a proud Christian. It just doesn't usually fit into my yammering about awesome books I'm reading or my latest outing with the toddler. When this book hit my mailbox though, I knew I wanted to chat a little about it and what it means to me.

I became a Christian in April 2006. I was 23. Being the bookworm that I am, I wanted to explore the faith and learn more by reading and The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren was the first book I picked up that did an excellent job of not only explaining different aspects of Christianity and what it meant to be a "Christian," but also focused on so many of the questions I wanted answers to. It also gave me this sense of peace that I wasn't alone. Other people had walked my walk and gone through the crazy sorting-out phase that I had been in. I wasn't the only person that hadn't accepted Christ until later in life and I definitely wasn't the only person who had made the decision to follow Christ, but wasn't quite sure what to do next.  It was an incredible feeling and I loved every part of that book, reading it several times over the course of the next couple of years.

It's been 10 years since The Purpose Driven Life was published and it's being re-released for the anniversary in a beautiful hardcover edition. I was sent this one to review, but I've already bought two others to give away this Christmas...I love it that much. It's the bestselling non-fiction hardback in publishing history for a reason.

This new edition has two added chapters. One focuses on Envy and one on being a People Pleaser. Oh goodness is that people-pleaser chapter about me. There's also web links and access to an 30 minute audio message from the author, which was great to listen to.

I think it's an important book and if you haven't read it and are looking for something like this, don't hesitate to pick it up!

Thanks to BookSneeze for the review copy.

6. Mother of Pearl

I want to encourage you to read this new book by Margaret McSweeney - Mother of Pearl is a book that is full of collective wisdom from women - women that have been there and know life.  It will encourage you to pull through the busy life of a mom and a woman and come out on the other side -strengthened and full of hope.  I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am confident you will too!

About the Book:
Like oysters, women often encounter unexpected grit during their everyday lives. In response, God’s love and grace covers this grit and transforms the pain into a precious pearl that leaves a layered, luminous lining within a shell: Mother of Pearl. This brilliant luster is strong, lasting, and purposeful—just like the love, lessons, and legacies left by the special women in our lives. Mother of Pearl celebrates the collective iridescence of motherhood. Margaret McSweeney presents a collection of heartfelt vignettes from authors who communicate the importance of the unique relationships between mothers and their children, between granddaughters and grandmothers and between children and the mother-figures in their lives. These stories tell of the power of faith, prayer, and values, exploring coming of age, the joy of becoming a mother, the importance of motherhood, the ways to heal from a bad relationship with a mother and weathering the death of a special loved one. Poignant and thought-provoking, the stories serve to inspire, encourage, instill hope, and strengthen faith. The proceeds from the sale of Mother of Pearl will be donated to organizations helping struggling women and children. The charities include Wings (Women in Need Growing Stronger) to help fund the Safe House in the Chicago suburbs and to Hands of Hope to help build wells for schoolchildren in Zambia.
About the Author:

Margaret McSweeney is a well-published author often writing online articles for Make It Better (the former North Shore Magazine) and freelance articles for the Daily Herald, the largest suburban Chicago newspaper. In addition, she has authored and compiled several books including A Mother’s Heart Knows; Go Back and Be Happy; Pearl Girls: Encountering Grit, Experiencing Grace, Mother of Pearl and Aftermath. With a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina in international business, Margaret became a vice-president in the corporate finance division of a New York City bank and worked there 1986–93. As founder of Pearl Girls, Margaret collaborates with other writers on projects to help fund a safe house for WINGS, an organization that helps women and their children who are victims of domestic violence, and to build wells for schoolchildren in Uganda through Hands of Hope. For the past 10 years she has served on the board of directors and leadership advisory board for WINGS. Margaret lives with her husband and 2 daughters in the Chicago suburbs. www.pearlgirls.info.

7. My Pop-Up Bible Stories

What a fun little book with a new twist on Bible Stories - a Pop-Up version!!  Juliet David has created My Pop-Up Bible Stories.  This is an adorable book with tender illustrations by Daniel Haworth.  The book will need to be used with care as any pop-up would - and it does only include 5 stories - I'd LOVE to see more!!!  But it is still fun and my girls are enjoying it!  The five stories are a combination of Old and New Testament stories so it gives a fun and simple overview that we can share with our little ones.  This is an author that KNOWS her stuff when it comes to Bible Stories - her list of books she's written is long - enjoy another new one by this "seasoned" author!

*I was sent this book to review by the publisher - Kregel Books - as part of a blog tour.

8. Passages

Are you feeling bored in your spiritual life?  Feel like you've hit a wall and are sliding down?  Brian Hardin tackles this in his book, Passages.  If you feel like your daily Bible readings are not very meaningful - you will love how Hardin tries to challenge you that your daily reading might just change you AND become the highlight of your day.  First he helps you to see that there is a big God that loves you and wants to be part of your life and he shows you how you can find time to spend with God and make a plan to see it happen.  He sets up a reading plan for the next year to get you through the entire Bible chronologically.  I thoroughly enjoyed this book - Hardin makes you think AND laugh - and I value that in a writer!  He is grounded and practical - just what we NEED!  Check out his great book AND his website.

9. Turning Guilt Trips Into Joy Rides

I needed this book!  Because I will admit - it is easy to load on the guilt - I am THE MASTER of that!!  Don't get me wrong - I'm not about loading it onto others but I load that guilt right onto myself.  So when I saw this blog tour I felt it was perfect for me.  Turning Guilt Trips Into Joy Rides by Shirley Brosius, Janine Boyer and Kim Messinger is a book that highly encouraged me!  This book is set up into 183 very short devotions - less than a page in length - but packed with thoughts that hit right to home.  And each is followed by scripture or prayers to encourage you to get your focus on God - where it should be.  I would recommend this book - it was easy to swallow and digest and PACKED with wisdom!  We need that, as women, to be reminded that guilt is not necessary - let's live in grace!

Guilt! She pokes you as you write about your quaint, eccentric aunt. She grabs you as you wander from e-mail to Facebook to laundry instead of focusing on your work. She kicks you as you complain about your husband to a friend. Have you noticed? Women seem riddled with guilt. And it’s hard to know if guilt is legitimate or simply a product of our imaginations. After all, should we really feel guilty about things over which we have no control? We are not perfect. We have no control over some things, so it's no use feeling guilty. We can't do it all. To celebrate the release of Turning Guilt Trips into Joy Rides, Shirley, Janine and Kim are giving away some great prizes during the blog tour. Share your own "guilt trip" or "joy tip" and be entered to win a free life coaching consultation and a $50 Amazon.com gift certificate. JUST CLICK THIS LINK and share what trips you up, holds you back or any tips you may have for overcoming guilt and keeping your joy. 11. The Beautiful Wife

I was asked to blog about a book for women - it was probably one I would not have picked up on my own.  I have read A LOT of books for women and wives, and I have not always found what I was hoping for.  SO, I was pleasantly surprised at this book.  The Beautiful Wife by Sandy Ralya is a very powerful book - I was shocked over and over when I read parts that I felt were aimed right at me.  I have been inspired and encouraged by this book.  It's simple - one of the main points was so refreshing and simple - "How do you turn to God and receive His wisdom and power for your marriage?"  Take these four steps:  "Be still, Worship, Read the Bible, and Pray."  It isn't rocket science but all throughout the book, Ralya gives practical advice to women - from remembering to take care of yourself to ways of looking at beauty in new and different ways.

I was also privileged to receive the Mentor's Guide - which helps you, as a leader, to teach this in a small group.  What a great tool!  I loved how it even gave you ways to pray before you ever meet as a group.  This is a very handy tool.

The Prayer Journal is another fabulous tool.  I am just so impressed with this whole series for women - it is practical and something that women, even being busy, can tackle and learn from. The Beautiful Wife by Sandy Ralya answers serious questions women have about their roles as wives - discussing everything from romance and money to beauty, communication, and sex.

Celebrate with Sandy by entering her Kindle Touch Giveaway and coming to her "Beautiful Womanhood" Facebook Party {3/8}!

One beautiful winner will receive:
  • A Brand new Kindle Touch with Wi-Fi
  • The Beautiful Wife By Sandy Ralya

Winner will be announced at Sandy's "Beautiful Womanhood" Facebook Party on 3/8. Sandy will be hosting an evening of chat, laughter and encouragement - bring your friends! 12. Four Letter Words

A "needed" book?? Yep, this is it!  I have three teenage boys that I am trying to prepare for the big world - and what do we discuss with them the most?? How to stand firm in what we believe and how to share that with others.  So I feel that Bill Giovannetti has hit the nail on the head with his book, Four Letter Words.  We need to know WHAT we believe, WHY we believe it and WHAT to say when it seems there are no ways to put it into words - Giovannetti does just that.  As a pastor and professor - he's been through the trenches and knows how to put our faith into words that others will relate to.  This is relevant for everyone, but especially so with our teens and those heading into college - as this is when we get challenged and asked so many of these tough questions.
Don't just take my word for it though - here is what others on the book blog tour are saying.  AND if you want even more information - go to Four Letter Words.  I love what the publisher says:

Thou shalt tolerate every opinion... except the Christian's. Today's postmodern "prime directive" leaves many followers of Jesus tongue-tied. In the global village, isn't it unreasonable, and even dangerous, to suggest that the Bible has a monopoly on truth? The church needs a new breed of Christ-follower. We need Christ-followers who are alert to today's touchy ideas, the truths that fire up more heat than light. We need Christ-followers who can make a clear case for the Bible's worldview; who are ready to help our friends think through their beliefs; who can recognize inconsistencies and challenge them; and who can do all of this with humility, confidence, humor, and love.

13. The Grace Effect

When I first started reading the prologue for this book, The Grace Effect, I thought, "I am going to give this one to my husband - I think it's too deep for me!" But as I got into Chapter 1, I knew I was going to LOVE this book and I didn't put it down (well almost anyway) until I was DONE! It is an exceptional book - it is, at it's core, a wonderful adoption story - the author, Larry Alex Taunton's, story of travelling to the Ukraine and their roller coaster ride to get their 10 year old daughter, Sasha. But interwoven throughout that story, is the story of Taunton's challenge in life - to get people to see that the world IS a better place with Christianity and Christ - How Grace makes life palatable. Taunton travels the world sharing and debating this truth - how we all need Grace. But woven in Sasha's adoption story, this truth is all the more seen and recognized through the life of this little girl.

Visit the Author's Website - Fixed Point

I think you all will WANT to read this book as well - SO - I have a giveaway for you!!! You can leave a comment here and you are entered to receive your own copy! Just leave a comment by Tuesday, Nov. 22 and you are entered!! IF you want additional entries, Tweet, Blog, or Facebook this giveaway and then come back and, in separate comments, tell me you did so!!

Here is what the publisher had to say about this book:
Simply defined, the ‘grace effect’ is an observable phenomenon—that life is demonstrably better where authentic Christianity flourishes.”

What does Christianity give us beyond televangelists, potlucks, and bad basketball leagues? Not much, according to the secular Left. The world, they say, would be a better place without it.

Historian and Christian apologist Larry Taunton has spent much of his career refuting just this sort of thinking, but when he encounters Sasha, a golden-haired orphan girl whose life has been shaped by atheistic theorists, he discovers an unlikely champion for the transforming power of grace.

Through the narrative of Sasha’s redemption, we see the false promises of socialism; the soul-destroying influence of unbelief; and how a society cultivates its own demise when it rejects the ultimate source of grace. We see, in short, the kind of world the atheists would give us: a world without Christianity—cold, pitiless, and graceless.

And yet, as Sasha shows us, it is a world that is not beyond the healing power of “the grace effect.” Occasionally infuriating, often amusing, but always inspiring, The Grace Effect will have you cheering for the courageous little girl who shamed the academic elitists of our day.

14. The House of Hope

Elisabeth Gifford's The House of Hope is quite a story - one that I won't soon forget. It is the story of Robin and Joyce Hill, how they give up a wealthy lifestyle to instead, live frugally and minister to "the least of these." They choose to open a home for orphans needing urgent care and terminally ill orphans in China rather than live for themselves. This is one of those books that I just could not stop reading - it tore at my heart - but it made me smile too. The Hills are making a difference - they are pouring into lives that are sometimes looked at as "minor" or "unimportant" - they are LIVING Matthew 25:40, "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."

I highly recommend this book that will challenge you - and at the very least - encourage you to remember the Hills when you pray.

15. If My Body Is a Temple, Then I Was a Megachurch

I thoroughly enjoyed Scott Davis' If My Body is a Temple, Then I Was a Megachurch!! This is a hilarious read that not only gives you great advice for losing weight safely, but also adds scripture behind it to give us, as Believers, Biblical reasons for losing weight as well. I enjoy Davis' sense of humor and down-to-earth reasoning. There is no magic formula - he admits that - but you can take principles and apply them to help yourself view weight loss in a new light - one that makes sense and is do-able. You will be encouraged and challenged - and we can all use that!!

If you want to read what others are saying about this book - read more review on the tour page.

16. From the Garden to the City

I have been looking for a book like this for FOREVER (well, almost!!). John Dyer's From the Garden to the City is a look at "The Redeeming and Corrupting Power of Technology". I have been impressed and hooked from the very first page - this book is well-written and packed with Biblical background and researched information, but it is also humorous and timely. I consider myself a lover of all-things-techy and this book shed new insight into ways that I can think about all of this new technology and the role it plays or could play in my own life. I was highly challenged - TRULY an impacting read. We can be on the "cutting edge" but we also need to be aware and see the impact these things can, and do have on our lives.

Here is what the publisher has written about the book:

From the Garden to the City
The Redeeming and Corrupting Power of Technology

John Dyer
Believers and unbelievers alike are saturated with technology, yet most
give it little if any thought. Consumers buy and upgrade as fast as they
can, largely unaware of technology’s subtle yet powerful influence. In a
world where technology changes almost daily, many are left to wonder:
Should Christians embrace all that is happening? Are there some
technologies that we need to avoid? Does the Bible give us any guidance
on how to use digital tools and social media?

An experienced Web developer and writer on technology and culture,
John Dyer answers these questions and more by walking through the
story of the Bible and introducing key ideas about how technology and
culture interact. Dyer first analyzes the biblical, theological, and
philosophical foundations of technology and then studies several
examples that show how technology can influence the spiritual life. For
youth pastors, college-aged readers, and anyone interested in
understanding how technology fits with faith, From the Garden to the
City fills a gap for biblically-informed literature in a technological world.

About the Author: John Dyer (BS, Texas A&M; ThM, Dallas
Theological Seminary) is director of Web development at Dallas
Theological Seminary. He has published articles in Collide Magazine and
Christianity Today and authors the blog donteatthefruit.com. From the
Garden to the City is his first book.

17. What Is He Thinking???

Rebecca St. James has written What is He Thinking?? What Guys Want Us to Know About Dating, Love, and Marriage. This book is a great "manual" for female teens and those in their 20's and even 30's that are still single and want to know more about men and why they act the way they do in regards to dating and even marriage. I was impressed with this book - St. James has done her research - she has interviewed young men to ask them the tough questions so that girls can read the book and have a clearer understanding of the men they are in relationships (or may soon be in relationships) with. I think her variety of men she interviewed makes this an extremely useful tool - it is honest, wise, and insightful - all while being humorous! This was an enjoyable read and I know our girls out there dating or getting ready to date will enjoy it as well.

Here is what the publisher has said about the book:

In WHAT IS HE THINKING??, Rebecca interviews a range of men from high-profile types to the guys next door, men that every woman can relate to. Although the interviews focus on single guys ages 20-35, Rebecca also includes words of wisdom from older mentors she respects who have been successfully married for years, people like her dad, life coach, and pastor.

The men share their thoughts on topics like how women can respect themselves and the men in their lives, modesty, purity, taking it slow, friendship, letting guys lead, and more. This book gives them the floor to say what they would really like women to know.

The men respond candidly to questions such as:
• What is the most attractive quality to you in a woman?
• Is modesty truly attractive?
• Is neediness a turn-off?
• What do you find beautiful?
• How can we be dependent on God for our identity, not on you?
• How can we help you with boundaries physically?

Rebecca also discusses her own dating life, speaking openly about the single life, her struggle with loneliness, and her hope for the future. She challenges women to see the men in their lives as brothers in Christ and to trust God with their dating lives.

18. Stained Glass Hearts

Patsy Clairmont is MARVELOUS!! She makes me laugh when I hear her speak - she makes me laugh when I read her work - but she can, on a dime, make me cry as well. She speaks to my heart and helps me to look inward and make some changes. Her latest book, Stained Glass Hearts is no exception. We are but broken glass - but when we are held up to the light, after being soldered together, we can be something wonderful! Her chapters are engaging - and what I love is after every chapter, Clairmont ties in famous websites, artwork, music, etc so you can go and see the artwork and experience it for yourself. It is a well-rounded experience and I just LOVE this book!

19. Route 66

The Bible is just a BIG BOOK - that is a true statement. And sometimes to learn to grasp what is all in there for us, we need to take it in chunks. And that is exactly what this book, Route 66 by Krish Kandiah, has done. Kandiah has taken the Bible and broken it up so that you could feasibly take 8 weeks and get a group together and conquer the outline of the Bible. No, you wouldn't be reading the entire Bible in 8 weeks, but you are getting an overall feel for how it all fits together and what each book would have as its premise - how it all fits together. The book is extremely "read-able" - I would recommend it to the questioning, new Believer or to the person who has been a Believer for years - all will find new insights and ideas.

To learn more, visit the Route 66 website - it is FULL of many other helps.

About the Author:
Krish Kandiah is the Executive Director: Churches in Mission for the UK Evangelical Alliance. He is also an external examiner for Oak Hill College, an Associate Research Fellow at London School of Theology, and is part of the theme development group for Spring Harvest.Dr. Kandiah previously held the position of Director of the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics, in addition to being Tutor for the Mission and Evangelism at Wycliffe Hall. He was also an Oxford University Theology faculty member.
Before becoming the pastor of a multi-cultural church in Harrow, Kandiah worked with students in the UK with Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship, and in Albania with the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students. He has wide experience in evangelism and cross cultural mission, and he is in demand around the world as a speaker and lecturer—though he is still a regular speaker at university missions and at Spring Harvest.
Dr. Kandiah and his wife, Miriam, have four elementary aged children and regularly take in foster babies. Kandiah has a keen interest in movies, photography, rock music, and Liverpool FC.

Here is what others have said about Route 66:

"One cannot travel a new way without a map. The map tells us the road to take. Route 66 is a wonderful map into experiencing the God of Scripture." Darrell Bock, Dallas Theological Seminary

"With easy humour and constant insight, Krish Kandiah tells us what we need to do to get excited about the Bible again, and to allow it to change us."
Stephen R. Holmes, University of St Andrews

"Route 66 doesn't make the Bible come alive. It shows that the Bible is alive--with the voice of God. In an age when even believers are bewildered by the Bible, Krish Kandiah shows us how all the parts of this most extraordinary book fit together and how each part makes its own contribution. He does this without either dumbing it down or ignoring some of the hard questions."
Michael Jensen, Moore College, Australia

20. Playing Hurt

This was a blog tour that I just hoped I'd be chosen for! I enjoy non-fiction reads that encourage and uplift my soul. Brian Goins' Playing Hurt: A Guy's Strategy for a Winning Marriage wasn't written for women, but I knew I could get my husband to read this one! Well, he has said he WILL read it - that's the good news although his schedule hasn't allowed it yet. So when he does I will post his thoughts! He did say it doesn't look like your normal "marriage book" and he does want to read it before I share it with others. So I think that's a high compliment coming from a husband that has already read MANY marriage books!

It was a great read - even from a woman's perspective! Goins knows how to encourage men in ways that they will hear and understand. He comes alongside men and shares from his own stories and lessons in ways that men will truly relate to. Whether this is a newly married man or a man growing old with his bride - the advice in this book is relevant. I want to encourage you to take the time for this book - whether you've read a million books on marriage or none at all - make it a million and one and enjoy this "playbook for marriage."

Here is what the publisher says about the book:

A marriage book that husbands will actually want to read!

Everyone admires people who play hurt, from the superstar athlete to the journeyman player who finishes the game even when hurt, sick, or falling apart. Everyone looks up to these athletes and wants to mimic their “never give up” attitude. Except when it comes to marriage. Most husbands are willing to take a bullet for their wives in a life-and-death situation; but when his bride fires the bullet--hurls an insult, disrespects him in public, ignores his foreplay in private--he’d rather throw in the towel than play through the pain.

Playing Hurt is a biblical playbook for marriage that speaks in the language most men understand—the language of sports. Using a sports analogy to explain the motivation, means, and methods of playing hurt, author Brian Goins shows men how to overcome the temptation to stay on the bench. Playing Hurt is more about inspiration than instruction. It’s about finding the motivation to stay in the game, despite the pain. It’s about becoming like the One who knew more about nails and thorns than any superstar athlete. Using Ephesians 5 as a biblical basis, this book will call husbands to be the heroes they long to be--men who play hurt in order to win at marriage.

21. True North

True North is a book that is a husband/wife collaboration by Gary and Lisa Heim. This is an honest, open look at how we can so often be disappointed by others in life. From page one, this book really resonated with me. People do disappoint - they will - they are human. But how we react to that disappointment is what will essentially form who we are. It might be our spouse, a dear friend, or even a child - but whomever it is - when we feel let down or disappointed in their reactions to a situation or to us, it is an opportunity for us to choose God. This was eye-opening to me - instead of being mad at the person, or saying unkind things to others to make them look bad - it is my choice to turn to God instead and put Him where He should be in my life - the one I turn to for everything - even my disappointment. John 16:33 states it pretty plainly, "In this world you will have trouble." It doesn't get much clearer than that. But it's how we react and deal with that "trouble" that determines who we will be. After reading this book, I am challenging myself - the next time I am tempted to be angry at a person for how they treated me - I want to refocus that all on Christ - let Him heal my wounds, and help me be a stronger person.

Highly recommend this one!!

22. Thirsting for God

Gary Thomas' Thirsting for God is unlike any book I have read. It is a fascinating look at what Christians throughout history have learned about living a life that is centered on God. They show us that a meaningful Christian life has nothing to do with things that come and go like fads and styles but everything to do with living a life that is fully focused on Christ and what He has for us. I was impressed that Thomas finds men and women from the 16th, 18th and 20th centuries to show us great examples of how to live a life that is totally focused on Christ - not sidetracked by things of this world that we THINK will make us happy. It is resonating deeply with me after having just read John Piper's Don't Waste Your Life. One of the quotes near the beginning of the book that really hit me was:

Therefore, Christian spirituality has more to do with what we receive than what we achieve. Our potential and activity depend entirely on God's work in our lives. If we set out to be achievers rather than receivers, we have not begun to follow God. Achievers call attention to themselves, whereas receivers lead others to appreciate the Giver. If we insist on being achievers, seeking God so that others might admire our faith, our commitment, or our dedication, we become God's competitors, trying to steal some of His glory.

I have not been disappointed by a Gary Thomas book yet - but this one really stands above to me. Great reminders given through Godly men and women of how we too, can live with a thirst for God above all else.

**I was sent a copy of this book for review purposes by a publicist but I was to give an honest opinion of the book for my review. Reviewed for ReadersFavorite.com.

23. Lazarus Awakening

When I read Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World - I really felt God working on me. So when I saw that Joanna Weaver had a new book, Lazarus Awakening, I was THRILLED to hear her words again. And it is powerful - I mean POWERFUL!!

Here is what the publisher says:

Getting God’s Love from Our Heads to Our Hearts

You believe that God loves the world…but sometimes you wonder if He truly loves you.

For many of us, moving the truth of God’s love from our heads to our hearts is a lifelong process. As we consider our inadequacies or grieve our shattered dreams, we find it difficult to believe that God cares for us personally.

In this life-giving book, Joanna Weaver shows you how to embrace the truth that Jesus loves you apart from anything you accomplish, apart from anything you bring. Just as He called Lazarus forth to new life, Jesus wants to free you to live fully in the light of His love, unbound from the graveclothes of fear, regret, and self-condemnation.

Love is calling your name.

Combining unforgettable real-life illustrations with unexpected biblical insights, Joanna Weaver invites you to experience a spiritual resurrection that will forever change your understanding of what it means to be the one Jesus loves. Bible study and Leader’s Guide available here. http://www.joannaweaverbooks.com/books/lazarus-awakening/
I have to say that I whole-heartedly agree. The book was riveting for me - a challenge to my heart about God's love for us. I KNOW He loves us, but this book challenged me to move beyond saying it to BELIEVING it. He is calling us forth to new life - IN HIM - and this means leaving behind the baggage of fear and regret. I whole-heartedly recommend this book!

Joanna is an inspiring author - here is more information on her:

24. The Me Project

Kathi Lipp has written a book that just thrilled my soul!! I LOVED The Me Project: 21 Days to Living the Life You've Always Wanted. I love this book because it reminded me of the days before kids and a busy life and all of those goals and dreams I had for myself. After 18 years, I have totally forgotten most of those, and to be honest, barely make it through what I have to get done each day, let alone the "extras" of dreaming dreams for myself. That is what made me smile about Lipp's book - she challenges you to re-think those dreams and work on making them happen. She gives you fun, creative, and do-able ways to make those dreams happen - those God-given dreams that were once planted in your heart and have been put on hold because of the busy-ness of life. Lipp is funny and yet touching - she so wonderfully helps you put your busy life in focus. Here are some of the keys she focuses you on.

Learning how to:
*Discover (or rediscover) the unique plan God has for your life
*Connect with a group of like-minded women who want to make their goals a priority
*Change your attitudes toward your roles in life, as well as how you approach your goals.
I love her focus on God first - that is HUGE and the ONLY way we'll ever accomplish all He has for us!

HERE is a great article on how to get started - a jump start (in 15 min.) on how to start working on those goals!

Kick Start Living Your Dream

And here is more information on Kathi Lipp:

25. The Life Ready Woman

I was asked to take part in The Life Ready Woman Blog Tour and I was thrilled to do it when I read that Shaunti Feldhahn was the author!! She has been a favorite of mine for some time. Her work is grounded and it always hits home - hey, she just "gets" women!!! And she's done it again - The Life Ready Woman by Feldhahn and Robert Lewis is a book that will challenge you and hey, maybe even correct you a bit. (That's ok, it did me too!!)

Here is what has been said about the book:

Are you a ‘Doing it all’ or ‘Do what matters’ woman?

Whether a stay at home; or working mom, an airplane-hopping executive, an empty-nester caring for multiple generations or a single juggling high demands of career and personal life, today's fast-paced modern world leaves women gasping for balance. We as modern Christian women want to look to the Bible for guidance on how to manage our lives -- but because the world of women looks so different today than it did when the Bible was written, it is hard to find chapter and verse that seems to apply to our situation today.

Thankfully, God has given us exactly that timeless, unchanging guidance for how to find peace, clarity, and God's best for our lives once we know where to look! The Life Ready Woman: Thriving in a Do-It-All World, reveals a profound biblical roadmap for how each of us can find the abundant life we are longing for, rather than the stressful, torn, how-do-I-balance-it-all life we often feel like we are trying to keep up with today. Actually being a LifeReady Woman means that you are clear about your life, bold in your faith, and able to find God’s best for you, and the end result will be that you not only survive but thrive in our do-it-all world.

God has given every wonderfully unique woman different skills and abilities, different desires, and different temperaments -- and every woman around the planet and through the ages is certainly living in different circumstances. But no matter what a woman’s life looks like, the Bible says that God has an individual mission and plan that He’s carefully designed for each of us. And He wants us to find it. Starting January 2011, The Life Ready Woman and the Life Ready Woman Video Series will help every wonderfully unique woman to thrive as she identifies and courageously pursues God's unique design and callings for her. LifeReady Woman puts you on a roadmap to make decisions that will lead to relief, delight, and fulfillment instead of regret.
