Marvel has just unveiled additional details to Civil War II, the publisher’s next big crossover event. Instead of the traditional Captain America and Iron Man clash, a new cover unveils a feud between Captain Marvel and Iron Man. Previously we saw Iron Man and (Sam Wilson) Captain America in a clash as well. A major fight […]

This afternoon saw a pretty massive shift in the state of Marvel Comics as author Brian Michael Bendis announced his departure from the X-Men franchise. The author first started his run with All-New X-Men #1 in 2012, and is closing out his time with the X-Men in the upcoming Uncanny X-Men #600 in May. While long runs with 90 issues are rare at Marvel Comics, Bendis planted his roots within the DNA of the X-Men team. This made readers think he was going to stay on the books longer. The upcoming Uncanny X-Men #600 see’s the last installment of the current X-Men run. CBR broke the news and conducted an exit interview with the writer. The interview contains essential information about the last issue. First off Bendis talks about departing from the series:
Over the course of the last few years, I will have written almost 90 issues of X-Men. That’s a good run! One of the best parts about being on X-Men was that I knew I was never going to hit Chris Claremont’s X-Men record, so I was free of whatever that is that drives such a thing.
Bendis also explains that the departure ties-in with the upcoming Secret Wars.
Then it was just like, what better place than “Secret Wars” to wrap things up on X-Men? You started with “Avengers Vs. X-Men,” and you wrap it up with “Secret Wars.” This is going to serve as a great launching pad for the next things that I wanted to do, which I really, really want to do. And as much as I really, really want to write X-Men I really want to do these things, too!
There are multiple artists for the upcoming issue:
Stuart Immonen is in. Chris Bachalo is in. Kris Anka is in, and Mahmud Asrar is also in. There are a couple more we’re waiting to hear back on, but Stuart, Chris, Kris and Mahmud were the major forces.
Bendis confirmed that the story is going to be a hefty comic:
So this is like a giant, 100-page book. It’s really cool.
Is Brian Michael Bendis leaving the X-Men to early? Or do you think his run is coming to a natural end with the upcoming Secret Wars. Let us know.

The first trailer for POWER, the Playstation series based on Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming’s longrunning comic, debuted at theNYCC panel for the show. Sharlto Copley stars as Christian Walker and Susan Heyward as Deena Pilgrim. Copley is minus most of his outrageous accent, but he’s still nutty as hell and I love it. Also, f-bombs and maybe Walker is Bi?

On Friday, the long running—22 years!—Brian Bendis message board shut down with the above message, and al of its archives went with it.
The Bendis Board was especially busy in the golden age of the message board (1998-2004) and hosted forums for many comics pros, including Gail Simone, David Mack, Kelly Sue DeConnick. I guess some of that will be available on the Way Back Machine, but with the CBR boards being scrubbed, the Bendis Board going away, and rumors of several other foundational message boards being shut down, a lot of comics history is vanished in a way that print just doesn’t offer. As I’m always reminding people, THE INTERNET IS NOT FOREVER.
Former forum member Albert Ching has a good look back including the reminder that it was an incubator for a whole generation of comics pros who posted and became friendly there, including Nick Spencer, Charles Soule, Joe Eisma, Joshua Hale Fialkov and Kody Chamberlain. A refugee message board has been set up here, according to comments.
I was active on the boards for a little while before time ran out, but there were some good people there…and some jerks, as always, but mostly good times.
Anyway, the Powers TV, er, filmed entertainment show, is in the works with Sharlto Copley as Christian Walker and Susan Heyward as Deena Pilgrim. I know Copley won;t be using that super South African accent he had in Elysium, but I can dream on. “My WAFF.”

As we noted the other day, Brian Michael Bendis is a newly announced guest at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, and it's a very rare convention appearance for him. On his Tumblr he was asked if he'd be doing any other cons and his answer was pretty blunt:

Will POWERS be the next Walking Dead? FX has ordered a pilot for the long-optioned comic by Brian Michael Bendis and Micheal Avon Oeming about detectives who specialize in cases involving superpowered beings. The script is by Charles H. Eglee and Michael Dinner will direct — shooting begins in the spring.
The comic started out at Inage but is currently part of Marvel’s Icon line.
While several recent superhero TV shows have fared badly — The Cape was more of a capelet — Powers has the advantage of great characters — detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim — set in a coherent world. It could just work out.
Another Bendis project, Alias, is currently being developed as AKA Jessica Jones for ABC.

TAKIO is definitely something different from Brian Bendis and Michael Oeming: a kids story. Set in a family where two squabbling sisters learn to come together after an accident gives them superpowers.
Released through Marvel’s Creator-owned imprint TAKIO is also unusual in that’s it’s being put out in a done-in-one graphic novel format. The book hits in March and retails for $9.95. Here’s a preview.

Who doesn’t like some Bendis, Bendis, Oeming? iFanboy has a preview of Takio,
On February 23rd, the team behind Powers flexes a whole different set of muscles when Takio hits the shelves. Created by Brian Michael Bendis, Michael Avon Oeming and Olivia Bendis (with colors by Powers’ Nick Filardi and letters by superstar Chris Eliopoulos), Takio is the first volume of an all ages graphic novel series by Bendis and Oeming from Icon. Not only is this something new for Bendis and Oeming, it’s also something Icon’s never done before.

So is it accurate to say this comic is about a teenager for whom almost everyone he has ever known as well as billions of other people from the world he knew are dead and gone, and yet the comic is not at all about this truly extraordinary circumstance? Does he remember? Is he cripplingly traumatized? Or is he “over it”?
I know this isn’t a stumbling block for other readers, but I don’t think I could enjoy a book with this premise, even if I were in for a Bendis title.
No it’s a comic about a teenager that, thank to a good action, has seen himself and all the people he cared about saved and brought to this new world.
I didn’t have any hang ups about it. Nor did I find Miles (or Ganke) to be any different. I’m not sure how you can say his Dad is significantly changed when he had 4 panels of short dialogue. Just because his wife is no longer dead? Sounds like you’re rooting for victimization or believe that depth requires tragedy.
As far as the idea that he’s traumatized by circumstance, I think he’s had enough of that in his short history – dead Mom, dead then alive Peter, dead bad Uncle. He actually endured the destruction of his world in Secret Wars. To that end, Molecule Man ensured a proverbial happy ending for him.
Miles doesn’t have to mirror Peter’s tragedies to be Spider-Man. To wipe the slate clean and have him and his core family intact is refreshing. Maybe being a teen hero today will be enough of a challenge.
I passed on this. Miles Morales would be more intriguing to me if Marvel had created a new and different alter ego for him but a second a Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe continues to follow the “de-uniquing” of characters. If it works for other readers, that’s great but it’s not for me.
