1. Wicked

So this was an illustration about colonialism, mainly European and to the South. The illustration was published in Maailman kuvalehti which is a Finnish magazine that mostly deals with subject matter outside the developed nations.

It's not that usual to see B&W illustrations in magazines anymore but I managed to sell the idea to them. What I didn't tell the client, was the actual reason I picked this particular technique – I had a fever and this was the only technique that didn't require any strength…

2. Castaway

Well, there's a predicament!

Had a bit of spare time today and thought I'd draw something for MA for a change. Enjoy!

3. Steampunk

I did this for a short story published in a Finnish sci-fi-magazine called "Kosmoskynä" (Cosmos-pen). The magazine is made entirely by volunteers for no monetary compensation, so this was also pro-bono (or another U2 member). I had loads of fun with the linework, though I'm a bit out of shape, having done so much computer-colouring lately. But it's nice to be able to post here for a change!

4. Easter card

Since we don't have that much light in Finland at this time of the year (and I already wished you a happy Easter) here's an Easter card I made for marketing purposes. It says: "Have a luminous Easter". It has been a really dark winter in the South of Finland - practically no snow at all and temperatures cling around 0° celcius. This time of year (or 2 weeks ago) we normally have -20°C and a heavy snow cover just inland of here. I'm just hoping we didn't already do this much damage...

Morbidities aside, enjoy the holidays!

5. Wonder Woman

Here's my submission for Wonder Woman. She's a very interesting character who has a solid conflict at her core. She's a born warrior but she's stuck in a society with little tolerance for that kind of behaviour. I would have loved to see Joss Whedon's interpretation of her on the big screen - he's got a knack for getting to the heart of things - but original interpretations are frequently swept out of the way of merchandising in Hollywood. Hope you like this one though! :)

And a happy Easter to everyone!

6. “Mob” Mentality, from Jonathan Swift to Karl Rove

zimmer.jpg
When White House adviser Karl Rove broke the story of his resignation to the Wall Street Journal earlier this week, he denied that the timing had anything to do with pending Congressional investigations. “I’m not going to stay or leave based on whether it pleases the mob,” he insisted. Rove’s rather derisive use of the word mob raised some eyebrows in political quarters. Monica Hesse of the Washington Post wrote that mob is “a three-letter grenade of a word — so French Revolution, so frothy-mouthed peasants torching the streets.” The word is a clipped form of mobile, which in turn is shortened from the Latin expression mobile vulgus, meaning ‘the changeable common people, the fickle crowd.’ Though the word refers to the inconstancy of the multitude, the English-speaking masses have stayed pretty constant in their usage of mob. As I’m quoted in the Post article as saying, the core sense of mob hasn’t shifted much from its 17th-century origins, and that sense is almost always negative. (more…)
