You can view all posts from a specific blog by clicking the Blog name in the right column, or you can click a 'More Posts from this Blog' link in any individual post.
Well I posted the front cover so I might as well show you the back cover, yeah? On a technical note, I have changed my watercolours from my standard 'Winsor & Newton' paints to 'Lukas' inks on a recommendation from a friend (the talented
Anna Walker) and I'm really happy with the results. The colours seem to be much more vibrant and not so flat and muddy (sorry to get all nerdy on you). I think I'm not imagining things.
Remember when I was telling you all (I say optimistically) about an Octopus with anger issues. Well, here he is in glorious colour. This is the cover for 'Mr Eight' by Sharyn Eastaugh - without all the wordy bits. I think (I'm never really sure) that I'm happy with how it turned out. Now, I will try my hardest not to ever sight it again.
It looks like I'll be working on finishing other author's books before I get a chance to work on my own - until I leave for New York anyway. Just finished the roughs for a Penguin Aussie Bite by Sharyn Eastaugh called 'Mr Eight.' It's a really funny little book about an Octopus with some serious anger issues (a Swordfish poked out one of his eyes in a fight) and a boy who wants a different sort of pet. I have always wanted to illustrate a book about an Octopus so was very happy when this one came along. These roughs are pretty much how they'll look when they're finished, only ink-washed up. See you soon!
Hi Gus
I love your work and check in with your blog as often as you post. Wonderful stuff!
I am curious about 'lukas' inks...I googled them but found no references. Where would I get my hands on some of these beautiful colors? (love what they do for Anna Walker)
Keep up the lovely work!
Hi Jennifer. Thanks for saying hi and for the kind words. I never know who's reading unless people post a comment. I sort of see my blog as a kind of diary of sorts. It's surprisingly cathartic to waffle on as if no one's reading!
Yeah, I must admit the Lukas inks (which are German) were hard to find, but I ended up finding them online here:

I just ordered the lot and they arrived nicely wrapped up a week or so later. I'm not sure where you are but these guys are in Melbourne, Australia (I'm in Sydney.) They do ship outside Australia though. Anna basically had ditched her 'Winsor & Newton paints a while back and really rated the inks so I thought I'd give them a go. Happy so far.
Best, Gus
GG you are the coolest nerd I know. And that octopus is a stunner. jx
