As per Con tradition, we slept in on Sunday. Not because of wild parties on Saturday night, but because we were a bit tired, and we could, and there wasn’t anything scheduled on our agenda.Today’s surprise on the Press Room menu was a nice TexMex chili. We haven’t noticed many Mexican or Latino restaurants in […]

We arrived back at the convention center bright and early, and were pleasantly surprised to discover that the press room was serving breakfast! After a brief tutorial on the Jura coffee maker (no… not a “coffee maker”… a “coffee juke box”!), I had a nice cup of normal (black) coffee with crema, and a few slices […]

After venturing to the far East of Japan last year, 2015 sees the return of the International Bar Association’s annual meeting to Europe. Vienna will host the conference this year, a city which holds an interesting pedigree as a legal centre. The Annual Meeting itself promises to be a must-attend event for all international lawyers, with sessions ranging from climate change justice to human trafficking.

While fans were cursing the fates here in the U.S. as they tried to score tickets to New York Comic Con, fans in Austria were jubilant over the announcement of Vienna Comic Con, scheduled for 21-22 November at the Vienna Messe.
Why is there a Ferris wheel in the logo? It’s a nearby landmark, and one of the largest in the world! (Auf Deutsch: Ree-zen-rahdt … so fun to pronounce!)
So… the Vienna Messe… What’s it like? Well, for starters, Reed Exhibitions, the parent company of Reed POP, manages the venue (as well as one in Salzburg, but the Mozartkluge and the Trappists despise each other, so a fan expo there is unlikely).
It was rebuilt in 2001, and looks great. (Here’s a photosphere “streetview” of the convention center. Nicely laid out, and lots of light! And those partitions! Vienna Woods!) The exhibition acreage places it somewhere between Denver and San Diego.
It is served by two subways stations (use Krieau). If you have time, get off at Praterstern Bahnhof and wall along Ausstellungsstrasse! Or Strasse des Ersten Mai! If you prefer streetcars, ride to the terminus at Prater Hauptallee and walk a kilometer to the Messe.
It’s part of the Vienna Prater. Think “Central Park”, double it, then add a convention center, a sports stadium, an amusement park, community gardens, a golf course, a streetcar line… (Darn… most of the Wurstelprater will be closed then. But the Wintermarkt will be open! Glühwein am Wien!)
There are three main areas of the convention center:
- Exhibition Center: 593,692 sq.ft. total.
- The Con will be in Hall D, 95,454 sq.ft., a little bit larger than the Artist Alley at New York Comic Con.
- According to the 2015 price list, the cost for an exhibition hall is €6.12 per square meter for two days, or €54272.16 for Hall D. $61,580 at current exchange rates. (I wonder if Reed POP gets an employee discount for renting a Reed Exhibitions site?)
- Congress Center OG (Obergeschoss = upper floor)
- Three restaurants and a bar
- the Schubert Hall, which can seat 240.
- Congress Center EG (Erdgeschoss = ground floor)
- Three rooms: Stolz (400), Lehár (1005), and Strauss (1,435)
I really hope there’s a Café-Konditerei nearby. Sachertorte, Kaiserschmarr’n, Wiener Melange… *sabber*
Need some quiet time? Waltz (or Moonwalk!) on over to the Danube, two blocks away.
Is there a con wars?
One month before will be Vienna Comix, two miles away at the Marx Halle. It’s been taking place twice a year since 1993, and last year’s Fall show drew 6,000 fans. The big draw(er) for the next show? Don Rosa. Dayammmmmn…
And then there’s “Comic Con Vienna“, scheduled for September! It’s (at least) their second year, and while it’s more of what we old-timers would call a science fiction convention, it looks like a fun show!
I had planned on attending the Paris Comic Con in late October, but since this show coincides with my annual Thanksgiving vacation, it looks like I’ll be heading to Vienna before I make my way to Nebraska!

It's autumn in this part of the world, and the trees are amazingly beautiful. A few weeks ago they were red and green, now they're mostly shades of brown, orange and gold, and every now and again a tree decides to simply shed itself of leaves, like someone taking off their overcoat and dropping it on the floor where they stand, and the leaves drop or spin and it's all so gloriously autumnal and pre-Hallowe'eny it feels like there's a set designer arranging it all.
And I'm leaving it all.
I'm headed off to Hamburg on Monday Night http://www.literaturhaus-hamburg.de/), Cologne on Tuesday, (http://www.literaturhaus-koeln.de/showtermine.php?id=931). These are sold out. Vienna on Wednesday, at 7:30 pm at Buchhandlung Morawa in Vienna Wollzeile 11, 1010 Wien (I can't see anywhere online to get tickets, so assume it's a just turn up event).
From there I go to Paris. On Thursday night (its the 23rd), around 7 pm, Dave McKean and I will be at the gallery opening for Dave's beautiful red and black and white SMOKE AND MIRRORS drawings at Galerie Martel, 17 Rue Martel, Paris. http://www.galeriemartel.com, https://www.facebook.com/events/282927571907816/
On Friday the 24th, at 6pm I'll be doing a SIGNING in Paris. Well, technically in Vincennes, at the Millepages. Librairie 91, rue de Fontenay Vincennes. The page is here. No tickets or anything needed, just turn up and I will sign your books or comics or arm.
(There was a 3:00 on Saturday signing mistakenly announced for me and Dave McKean at Galerie Martel, but that's ONLY DAVE as I'm off being interviewed then. So if you are in France and you want something signed, come to the Vincennes signing.)
Last year, Sherman Alexie came up with an idea so audacious and imaginative it could only have been conceived by an author who wanted to be allowed behind the counter in a bookshop. The idea, “Indies First,” is this: authors get to spend a day hand-selling books and helping out in their local independent bookshop.
Good, right? You, an author, will experience the joys and frustrations of being a bookseller. Mostly the joys — it’s one of the busiest days of the year for small businesses, especially in bookshops. The day in question is the Saturday after Thanksgiving, “Small Business Saturday.” People are beginning to buy gifts for the holidays (now is your chance to persuade people that they need your books — especially if you’ve signed them — and your friends’ books, and books you’ve always loved that, if widely read would make the world a better place). It will be, we promise you, a much more sociable day than the ones you spend staring at a blank screen or a white sheet of paper, communing with imaginary people and suchlike.

Andrea Herrera was in Intro to American Indian Studies, a course I taught at the University of Illinois in its American Indian Studies program. She was in the class in Fall 2010.
Today (March 18th) Andrea sent me the photo shown here. She's in Vienna, Austria this semester. I'm uploading the photo, with her permission. Thanks, Andrea!
It is striking! Many questions come to mind... Obvious ones like... Who painted it? Why? What building is it on? How big is it? When was it put there?
Andrea said the building has other paintings on it, too, and that many of them are also stereotypical.
How to make sense of the painting? Is this a common image that comes to the mind of an Austrian when he/she thinks "United States" or "America"?
I wonder what sorts of images of Indians I'd find in children's books by Austrian authors/illustrators?

Mom says:
I laughed pretty hard when I read this book. Described on the book jacket as "a hilarious mockumentary," Jonah Winter's The 39 Apartments of Ludwig van Beethoven could not present a more accurate picture of the perils of living in noisy apartment buildings. Winter, and illustrator Barry Blitt, use the opinions of neighbors, movers and landlords as well as physical evidence found at the scenes to document the trials, tribulations and logistics of moving 6 leg-less pianos for a mad genius from basement apartment to attic to parlor apartment to a stylish "loft-like" apartment. I especially love all the little details, like pounding on ceilings, barking dogs and crying babies -- details that are not lost on this urban dweller. This book would be a great accompaniment for an introduction to the composer.
I am quite glad that my upstairs and downstairs neighbors both have children so that I need feel no guilt about my sons' raucous behavior. We put up with them, they put up with us. No doubt Beethoven's neighbors put up with a lot more!
Big Kid says: That is crazy!

Having seriously played the sport for ten years in my youth, part of this time with a close friend from Belgium, I reached adulthood as a rarefied type of American: a soccer fan. By which I mean that I still haven’t figured out what all of those baseball statistics mean. But I am looking forward to June 29th when two teams will meet in Ernst Happel Stadium to decide the 2008 European Football Championship. Located in Leopoldstadt, one of 23 districts in Vienna, the stadium sits on an island created by the Danube Canal and the river of the same name. Historically this part of Austria’s capital contained a large Jewish population (Freud lived here), and because of this, gained the nickname “Matzoh Island.” A number of tourist attractions occupy the island today, including Wurstelprater, an amusement park, as well as the Republic of Kugelmugel, a micronation founded in 1984.

Michael J. Klarman, won the Bancroft Prize in 2005 for From Jim Crow to Civil Rights: The Supreme Court and the Struggle for Racial Equality. Brown v. Board of Education and the Civil Rights Movement, is an abridged, paperback edition of his original masterpiece, which focuses around one major case, Brown v. Board of Education. In the original essay below Klarman, who is the James Monroe Professor of Law and Professor of History at the University of Virginia, explores political backlash.
While we ordinarily think of Brown v. Board of Education (1954) as contributing to the creation of the modern civil rights movement, Brown’s more immediate effect was to crystallize the resistance of southern whites to progressive racial change, radicalize southern politics, and create a climate ripe for violence. Indeed, prominent Court decisions interpreting the U.S. Constitution have often produced political backlashes that undermine the causes that the rulings seem to promote. (more…)
The Vienna Prater is GREAT!!! I am going to force Lance Fensterman to allow me to go to this show. Austria is wonderful, wonderful.
