1. My Thoughts: Afterward by Jennifer Mathieu

4 bittersweet chocolate chip cookies.

Cover Love:
Yes, the image of the bike and balloon combined with the tag line "Ethan went on a bike ride. Four years later, he came back," are very striking.  Good stuff!

Why I Wanted to Read This:
I was in the mood for something different and I needed a book I thought I could get done quickly.  I have read Jennifer Mathieu before and knew I liked her writing so I gave this a try!  Here's the synopsis from GoodReads:

When Caroline's little brother is kidnapped, his subsequent rescue leads to the discovery of Ethan, a teenager who has been living with the kidnapper since he was a young child himself. In the aftermath, Caroline can't help but wonder what Ethan knows about everything that happened to her brother, who is not readjusting well to life at home. And although Ethan is desperate for a friend, he can't see Caroline without experiencing a resurgence of traumatic memories. But after the media circus surrounding the kidnappings departs from their small Texas town, both Caroline and Ethan find that they need a friend--and their best option just might be each other
Romance?: Not really, but a pretty strong friendship develops.

My Thoughts:
This was a powerful book.  The author wrote it from the alternating points of view of Caroline and Ethan.  She did a great job with each of their voices.  I can't imagine the research she must have done to write Ethan so well!  I'm sure that kids coming back from that kind of trauma display all types of behavior and the way she wrote Ethan seems so real and true.  His chapters were particularly moving and engaging.

And Caroline was every bit as messed up because she blamed herself for Dylan's abduction.  Although Dylan wasn't gone nearly as long as Ethan, because he was autistic his recovery was very stalled.  That was one of the most interesting contrasts in the book:  Ethan's parents had money to get him (and them) help, Caroline's family did not.  However, Caroline's mom also kind of wanted to act like it didn't happened, which didn't help anyone in their family.

I liked how Ethan's flashbacks were handled.  Even though the what happened to Ethan was totally disturbing, the author leaves it to our imaginations.  She isn't graphic with his memories, what comes back to him truly is what he can handle in his recovery.  However, it's very clear the kind of abuse and trauma he had to deal with during his four years.  It was just so well done.

I loved how the book ended, there was hope for both Caroline and Ethan and their families.  It was a good ending and really the best one for this story.

To Sum Up:  This would be a powerful read for many ages.  I am going to get it for my library because it gives students a glimpse into stuff that is very real, but rare.  Just the kind of book I loved to read when I was a young teen!

Book requested and sent from Macmillan for review.

2. Cover Love #1

Sometimes I see a cover I love so much I just want to share it.  I want to shove it in front of other people's faces and say, "LOOK!"  So, that's what this new feature is about.  Last week I was doing some book shopping and looking through spring catalogs.  I came across a book that sounds good, but when I saw the cover I knew it was a book I want to read, to hold in my hands, to display at my house!  Just look at it!

And it sounds so good, here's the synopsis:

Sophie Seacove has been abandoned by her parents and sent to work as a servant at a dilapidated house surrounded by sea monsters. (Sophie always suspected her parents hated her.) It’s dangerous work, made worse by the untrustworthy residents of the house: There’s Scree, the creaky caretaker who knows more than he lets on. The Battleship, a widow haunted by her own poor choices. And the Battleship’s twin sons, gleeful sadists who will do anything to be rid of Sophie. When the Battleship’s nephew, Cartwright, offers Sophie an irresistible deal—find the mysterious Monster Box, and he’ll get her off the island—Sophie agrees, opening up a years-old mystery and setting off a deadly chain of events. But everyone is lying to her. The twins are trying to kill her, or at least make her sit through their horrible performance of Hamlet. And Sophie needs to use her brains, her brawn, and her unbreakable nature if she’s going to make it off this wretched island alive.
I just can't wait to see this cover in person. What do you think?

3. My Thoughts: Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk

4 spicy & soft ginger cookies.

Cover Love:
I LOVE this cover. You have to see it in person to see how beautiful it is, but it's like  rose gold and shimmery and gorgeous.  So eye catching!

Why I Wanted to Read This:
I had been hearing a lot of buzz about this book, even before it was released.  I was lucky enough to get an ARC in the mail, but it still took me a few months to get it read.  Here's the synopsis from GoodReads:
Growing up in the shadows cast by two world wars, Annabelle has lived a mostly quiet, steady life in her small Pennsylvania town. Until the day new student Betty Glengarry walks into her class. Betty quickly reveals herself to be cruel and manipulative, and while her bullying seems isolated at first, things quickly escalate, and reclusive World War I veteran Toby becomes a target of her attacks. While others have always seen Toby’s strangeness, Annabelle knows only kindness. She will soon need to find the courage to stand as a lone voice of justice as tensions mount.
Romance?: Nope, not that kind of book.

My Thoughts:
This was a great read.  The only reason I gave it four cookies was because I had a hard time getting into the story.  I feel like this was my fault.  Reading the synopsis made me know there was going to be a lot of times my stomach would be in knots while reading this book.   It made me a little hesitant about diving right in, so I took my time.  When I let myself go, I realized that my fears came true, but the way the author handles it all made it an easy read.  There was a lot of tension and my stomach was in knots, but one reason I was too upset while reading this is that Annabelle always has someone on her side.  People, her parents, believe her.  Having someone in her corner the whole time gives her the confidence she needs to stand up for the innocent and for herself.

I love the setting. This was set at the start of World War 2, in a rural area.  Annabelle goes to school in a one room schoolhouse, but there are also cars.  It's like the cusp of the technological revolution. Annabelle's parents are hard working farmers, but also very much devoted to their children. Annabelle's grandparents and an aunt live with them as well.  These things are during a time that always fascinates me, there is such an innocence about the world still.  And that's what makes this book so powerful.  We see a little girl on the verge of growing up who loses her innocence pretty quickly.  What happens to her and her world changes her, makes her see how the world really is, but it doesn't destroy her.  The author does a great job of walking the fine line between destroying Annabelle and using the situation to make her stronger.

One of my favorite parts of this book is how much takes place in the family kitchen.  Most of Annabelle's confessions to her family happen around the table or when she is helping her mom cooking and baking.  I love that!  This is what happens in my family, the kitchen is the heart of our home and some of our best times are when I am cooking or cleaning up and my kids are doing homework and my husband is helping them or me and we are all just enjoying being together.  Even though the events that happen in this book are serious, you just know that their kitchen is the room that has the most love and trust.

To Sum Up: This book didn't turn out to be the hard read I had expected. It was innocent and interesting and a little disturbing.  It would be a great read for a middle school book club!

Book sent to me from Rachel at Penguin.  Thanks Rachel!

4. Obsessing Over #5: The Littlest Bigfoot

I love the synopsis for this book.  I love the author and have read many of her adult books.  I love the cover.  Right now, I think this book is at the top of my WANT list.  It comes out in early September and I will be pre-ordering a copy for myself and a copy or two for my library.

Also, I have a certain fascination with Bigfoot.  When my oldest son was first diagnosed with Crohn's disease he had to spend about a week in the hospital.  He wasn't overly sick, he just needed to be on an IV because he was pretty malnourished, so he was really, really bored.  One of the things we discovered was the TV show Finding Bigfoot.  For some reason there was a marathon on and we spent one whole day and evening watching that show.  It was a lot of fun and a good memory during a bad time.  Ever since then we have lots of Bigfoot discussions, even though he's 18 now.  It is something that bonds us a bit, and makes me even more excited for this book.

Any upcoming fall releases catch your eye yet?

5. Obsessing Over #4

I know that the reason I am obsessing over this book so much is because of the cover.  It just appeals to me so strongly!  The synopsis isn't that bad either, but it's a book I know that I want to hold in my hands.  I have ordered a few copies for my library and can't wait until they come it.  This is going to be a must read right away!  Here's the synopsis:

When robot Roz opens her eyes for the first time, she discovers that she is alone on a remote, wild island. Why is she there? Where did she come from? And, most important, how will she survive in her harsh surroundings? Roz's only hope is to learn from the island's hostile animal inhabitants. When she tries to care for an orphaned gosling, the other animals finally decide to help, and the island starts to feel like home. Until one day, the robot's mysterious past comes back to haunt her.

6. Added to the List #17: Simon & Schuster Edition

I got some awesome books in the mail from Simon & Schuster in September.  I have ordered most of them for my library (I want to read through more of The Death and Life of Zebulon Finch to see if it's appropriate before for my middle school library).

A Nearer Moon and This Side of Wild are already really popular.  How gorgeous is the cover for A Nearer Moon?!  I have heard awesome things about The Nest--supposedly really creepy.  And Kenneth Oppel is always a favorite of mine.

Thanks so much for the books Simon & Schuster!  Always good to discover something new for mine and my student's enjoyment!

7. Contest Monday - Get Published by HarperTeen!

You may remember way back in January when I announced that I would have a short story appearing in the upcoming HarperTeen anthology DEFY THE DARK, that I said there'd be more exciting news about how YOU could be in the anthology too. Well, that day has finally arrived!

HarperTeen and Figment have opened up the DEFY THE DARK Short Story Contest.

This cover is NOT FINAL, but isn't it pretty?

The contest is open to any unpublished writer, or published writer who has earned less than $2000 from their writing. All you need to do is write a 2000-4000 word story of any genre that mostly takes place at night, or in the dark.

You can be creative with this. It doesn't have to be dark and scary. A girl sneaking out at night to meet her secret crush fits just as well as those creepy things that go bump in the night.

You have until September 1st to write an upload your story to Figment. The winner gets:

  • The winner will get paid and have their story published in DEFY THE DARK!
  • Two second place winners will also win cash prizes from HarperCollins and have their stories published on the Defy The Dark website.

So what are you waiting for? Get all the contest details at the Figment.com DEFY THE DARK contest page!

8. Bookanista Feature: Holy Amazing Covers, Batman!

Since there have been SO many amazing cover reveals going on lately, I thought I would use this week's Bookanista Feature to showcase a few of my favorites--in case you missed them! (and their titles are all goodreads links, in case you would like more info about the book, which you SHOULD)

THE ARCHIVED, by Victoria Schwab
I love how abstract and eye catching this is. It's just the kind of image that makes you DYING to know more--especially what that key unlocks!

DUALED, by Elsie Chapman
Kick-butt heroine AND a creepy shadow that looks like its hunting her? Um--YES PLEASE! And don't even get me started on the tagline!

LEVEL 2, by Lenore Appelhans
The photo itself is really eye-catcing--but what makes it are the details. The white dots. The maze-like font. Such coolness!

THE MADMAN'S DAUGHTER, by Megan Shepherd
There's something both romantic AND creepy about this cover--and I have NO idea how they pulled that off, but I am SOLD.

MIND GAMES, by Kiersten White
WHERE DO I START???? The colors? The eyes? EVERYTHING IS PERFECT! And I've read this one, so I know just how perfect it really is.

9. Cover Love

The Greatest Love Story of All Time by Lucy Robinson

I have said it many times before. I LOVE British covers. They are happy and bright and oh so girly. Yes, I admit to being a fan of these covers and wish that American covers were as light and bubbly as their British counterparts. I also wish we had some of these books! Not that I don’t love and adore so many of the books published here in America…but sometimes I feel we miss out on some good, old-fashioned, Bridget Jones-esque CHICK LIT! There, I said it. I frequent sites like Trashionista and Novelicious, desperate for information on what little literary gems they have coming out overseas. I wish I could get my hands on these titles. I would love to see many of them published here, as well. There is something much lighter and carefree in the created worlds of British (and Irish) female writers. Why is that? Do they have a better sense of humor? Marian Keyes is a great example. She tackles some very serious issues with her novels but does so in such an enjoyable and entertaining way. Isn’t that true about life in general? Isn’t there always some strange humor found in the most dire of circumstances? Isn’t that a great testament to the strength of the human spirit? The ability to still find laughter? To look on the bright side? To appreciate the good? I think I may have to move overseas.

10. Cover Love: BEAUTY by Susan Wilson

Beauty by Susan Wilson

Every reader is familiar with the popular tale of Beauty and the Beast. But what if the fairy tale came true? Beauty tells the story of a modern woman who learns to love the deeper man, beyond all appearances; it is a totally credible, contemporary retelling of the classic tale.

11. Behind the Scene - cover shoot sneak peeks!

In the Home Stretch

Okay so I am almost there - only 3 weeks until the launch! Can you believe it?

I got over the hump this weekend. My copy edits are done and my cover is done (yay!) Now, my hubby and I are just working on formatting which is a pain in the arse. Ugh! I'm moving through all the interviews as they are scheduled.  Reviews are starting to come in and they are very positive. I'm so thankful for all the support I'm getting.

Nerves are starting to build and doubts are starting to set in - especially when I'm tired. What if they don't like it? What if I'm not good enough? What if I fail? Will people get the book? Will people support me? Will my book stand out in the thousands of books out there?

I push those down and keep pushing forward but it's hard. Because when you are traditionally published - you have agents, and marketing teams, and editors that love your work. At the end of the day, right now, it's just me.

Now I need to start planning my online launch party - which will have tons of prizes, gifts, and surprises. I'm going to do a chat too. Maybe on my process, book and marketing. I'm scheduling a few different times so everyone can come and I'll let you know more then.

Tomorrow, I will publish the "OFFICIAL Untraceable Blog Tour" which kicks off next week! My tour guides rock!

Behind The Scenes Sneak Peeks

Big cover reveal on Friday! Yikes! I love it Vania did an awesome job and found the PERFECT model. She. Is. Grace.

Starting this afternoon, stay tuned to Novel Novice's blog and Vania's blog this week - they are doing a big expose, showing different cover shots for Untraceable with the REAL ONE popping up on Friday. You can also follow them on Twitter: Vania and Novel Novice.

I'm about to pee in my pants with excitement. I. Can't. Wait. for you all to see it. EEEEPS!

I'll be sharing a few EXCLUSIVE 'behind the scene' photos from the shoot all week long.....

This is exactly who Grace is to me.

12. PIF Query Winners and Some Book Love

Pay It Forward Query Winners

Okay so I am a sucker because I could not narrow it to 3.

So I have 5 queries that will move on to the next stage.

I made this decision based on the query, the premise, but mostly what I think Alyssa would like. I personally loved all 10 for different reasons.

The winners of the query contest are: (DRUM ROLL!)

Congrads! You win a query critique and move on to the final stage. Please email me ([email protected]) your most updated query and your FIRST THREE chapters. I will read them and choose the winner to pass on to Alyssa. At this stage it comes down to the writing and pacing for me. :)

Just like before, if the other five writers would like some feedback on their query - please feel free to email me and I will share my notes that may or may not help you.

14. Bookanista Cover Love: Hourglass, by Myra McEntire

OMG I cannot TELL YOU how long I've been waiting for this day.

Well...actually, I can. I got a sneak peak back in THE BEGINNING OF NOVEMBER and have been stuck sitting quietly by ever since.  Longing for the day I could SHOUT FROM THE ROOFTOPS HOW MUCH I LOVE IT!!!!

ahem.

That day is finally here. So without further ado, I present the cover of HOURGLASS, by my good friend--and fellow Bookanista--Myra McEntire.

I'm not sure if you've figured it out yet. So I'll just let you scroll back up and stare at it until you really see it.

*waits patiently*

*whispers: turn your head*

*smiles as you go, OHHHHHHH!!!!!!*

Yeah. I mean, how gorgeous--and COOL--is that cover? I don't think I have words to describe it's sheer awesomeness. So I'm not even going to try.

All I'll say is that I love when great covers happen to great people. And Myra is seriously one of my favorites. So please make sure you stop by HER BLOG and tell her how much you love her amazing cover. Then hop over to Twilight Lexicon to watch the beautiful teaser-trailer and enter to win an ARC.

And start counting down the days until you can experience HOURGLASS yourself. As someone who's been lucky enough to read it, I can promise it's every bit as awesome as the cover. But we'll talk more about that when I do my review. For now, we'll just bask in the beauty of that image.

*scrolls back up to admire some more*

15. Bookanistas: Cover Love of The Near Witch

My friend, Victoria Schwab, just got her cover for The Near Witch.

How exciting to get it! I'd thought I'd give her a congrads shout-out. And it's up for preorder! So go order it now!

The Near Witch is only an old story told to frighten children. If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely, and always looking for company. There are no strangers in the town of Near. These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life. But when an actual stranger—a boy who seems to fade like smoke—appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true. The next night, the children of Near start disappearing from their beds, and the mysterious boy falls under suspicion. Still, he insists on helping Lexi search for them. Something tells her she can trust him. As the hunt for the children intensifies, so does Lexi’s need to know—about the witch that just might be more than a bedtime story, about the wind that seems to speak through the walls at night, and about the history of this nameless boy.

And here's her talking about all the deets around the cover. Check it out!

16. Cover Love!

I'm a very visual person (hello, filmmaker!) so I find I'm really drawn to books by their covers. There are books I've bought (or in some cases pre-ordered), just because I loved the cover so much that I HAD to have it. Like these:

And books that I thought sounded pretty good, but whose cover made them seem awesome. Like these:

Upcoming Covers I'm drooling over:

I've tried to figure out just what it is that draws me to these covers but they're all pretty diverse. I'm definitely drawn to images that are outside, and not so much to faces. I also tend to like photographs more than drawings. I like images convey a mood - preferably a darker one. And images that are striking but I'm not that good at pointing out just what it is that makes them striking!

What about you? What are you drawn to in a cover? What are some of your favorites?
