1. When When You Were Small Was Small

Is it possible that When You Were Small was published a decade ago? Sometimes it feels like it was just last week. Sometimes it feels like it was a century ago.

In the time since the book was published some very lovely things have happened. It has won a few prizes and gone a few places. It still makes me happy to think of the time the Mexican Ministry of Education printed 60,000 copies to give away to primary students. There have been two more Henry books since that first one and I've got a site that rounds up reviews and such if anyone's interested.

Part of the success of this book (and its fellows) is due to the brilliant book designer, Robin Mitchell Cranfield. Along with Dimiter Savoff, publisher of Simply Read Books, she came up with such a beautiful, stripped-down, timeless aesthetic for the book. I couldn't love it any more than I do.

My great hope is to go on making books with Julie Morstad. There are many, many reasons for this but the best one, for me, is that we find the same things funny. And in that vein, is this wonderful photo I came across on Instagram a little while ago. It was posted by Summer Hall of Appyreading and she's given me permission to share it here.

When You Were Small is being released in paperback this month (I'll have more on that soon) and is available for pre-order now.

Here are a few places you can find the book. I'll be adding in more and if you have suggestions please feel free to comment. I'm always happy to learn about independent booksellers that are new to me.

2. A Ginger Dot & Wee Henry

Was thinking today of the many things my darling boy has made me in relation to my books.  There has been a Henry doll, a sequel to the first books (written when I was too slow producing one), an audiobook version of WYWS, a pop-up prototype (a gift to Julie Morstad on her last visit to Montreal).

Now he's producing Scots versions of all three of The Henry Books.

Here's Whaur Ye Cam Frae and When Ah Was Wee.

4. Dress Up Time

CBC is holding a competition for best literary hallowe'en costume.

Here's one that gets my vote!

This charming little fellow by the name of Clem went dressed as Henry from When You Were Small last year.  Don't you love his little thimble hat?  Kudos to his creative mother, Vania, who blogs at A Crafty Vegan (and thanks for the use of your picture).

Anybody else have pictures of kids dressed as childrens' book characters?

5. When You Were Out of Print

In light of When You Were Small being out of stock at many online sites just at present, I have decided to offer a copy for the very reasonable price of FREE.

I will give away a (signed if you wish) copy of When You Were Small to someone who leaves a comment on this post: tell me about when you were small, tell me about what books your small person likes, or just tell me any small thing.

I'll let my favourite small person choose a number at random and will announce the winner here.

6. When You Were Overpriced

I see on Amazon today that you can purchase a copy of When You Were Small for the terribly reasonable price of $117.43.

Now, I'm not saying that I think that this would be a foolish thing to do, or that if you hold your breath and pinch your thumbs the new edition of the book will be reaching stores shortly ... I'm just saying that if you are inclined to spend your money in this way then you can always reach me (123oleary) at gmail.com.  And hey, have a nice day!
