2. ‘Yellow Sticky Notes: Canadian Anijam’ by Jeff Chiba Stearns

An ‘Anijam’ is a collaborative animation where various artists create individual short animated segments that are linked together to make one larger film. For the first time in Canadian history, 15 of Canada’s most acclaimed independent animators have come together to create a collaborative animated film. "Yellow Sticky Notes: Canadian Anijam" is an innovative and global approach to animation filmmaking and unites animators from coast to coast, from Vancouver to Halifax and all parts in between, to self reflect on one day of their lives using only 4x6 inch yellow sticky notes, a black pen and animation meditation.

5. Vimeo Awards and Festival in NYC

Tonight in New York City is the second annual Vimeo Awards. I was one of the judges in the animation category, and one of these four nominees in the category will receive $5,000:

Little Boat by Nelson Boles (US)

Les chiens isolés by Rémi Bastie, Nicolas Deghani, Jonathan Djob-Nkondo, Paul LaColley, Nicolas Pegon, Jérémy Pires, Kevin Manach (France)

Umbra by Malcolm Sutherland (Canada)

Cross by Fabian Grodde (Germany)

Tickets are sold out to the award ceremony, but there are still tickets left to the Vimeo Festival which takes place tomorrow and Saturday, and offers lots of interesting talks targeted toward short filmmakers. Vimeo is offering a special deal for Cartoon Brew readers. For a $40 all-access pass to the 2-day festival, go to Ticketfly and use the discount code “brew”.

6. Umbra by Malcolm Sutherland

Umbra (HD – 2010) from Malcolm Sutherland on Vimeo.

In this beautiful new, surreal animation by the ridiculously prolific Montreal animator, Malcolm Sutherland, “an explorer adventures into an unknown world… yet it seems that he has been there before.”

7. Malcolm Sutherland: La Fete

Montreal Animator Malcolm Sutherland shared his latest video with me. La Fete is like watching a sketchbook of observational life drawing come to life. It shows the power that sound can have on even the simplest of animations. Beautiful.

Also, his entries for Star Wars Uncut are brilliant, and I hereby demand that he now animate the entire film:
