2. What a WondLaful Tour

The Battle for WondLa tour is over, and though I am exhausted from travel, I also feel honored, blessed and inspired.

IMG_8277

My tour began in Southern California where I visited the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles with WondLa’s audiobook reader and award-winning actress, Teri Hatcher.

Teri

From LA, I traveled east visiting bookstores in Phoenix, Kansas City, Austin, Atlanta, Chicago, Milwaukee and even in my town in Western Massachusetts. I spoke at numerous schools and connected with scores of readers. We chatted mostly about stories and some of our favorite books and characters.

IMG_8204

IMG_8205

In a couple of stops, authors came to support me–like Adam Gidwitz (below, center) posing with Topher Bradfield (left) after my event at Austin’s premier indie shop, BookPeople.

IMG_8235

To be honest, travel wears me down and it is tough being away from home, my wife and daughter. But the families who took the time to come and see me speak validated why I do this and inspired me (especially when my public event fell on a school night). I don’t usually stop to ponder how many lives my books touch, so I was often overwhelmed with emotion by the turnouts at my events. I was moved by the kind words and wonderful gifts given to me after readers had waited in a long line to have their book signed.

IMG_8306

So, for today’s “Friday Fan Art”, I thought I’d share some of the amazing drawings, and other goodies, that were given to me while on the road. Check out Aeden (above), who delivered a whole mess of artwork from Spiderwick to WondLa.

Aedan1

Them there was Medelyn who brought me this lovely sketch of Eva Nine at Anderson’s Bookshop in Naperville.

At Little Shop of Stories, near Atlanta, recent art school grad, Katie, gave me this wonderful watercolor of Eva and Rovee.

I love Austin and was blown away by the talent during my visit to BookPeople. This is a Bull Goblin, from The Spiderwick Chronicles, made from felt!

IMG_8228

In fact, Tomoko, one of the booksellers at BookPeople created this beautiful image from the climax of A Hero for WondLa.

In Milwaukee, I was given “Christopher the Cupboard Pixie” from Janice who runs an Etsy shop called Sew Sweet Monsters. Christopher now watches over my books in the studio,

Back in Mass, Rob and his son, Ben, are both artist. They gave me drawings of their favorite characters from the WondLa books.

Rob

Ben

These little tokens of appreciation will all be cherished. It is surreal and inspiring to see others celebrate my characters through their art.

Thank you for coming out and making this tour so memorable for me. I hope to see you again, next time.

Keep dreaming, keep drawing.

3. The Battle for WondLa May 2014 Tour Dates

I’ve finally received my May tour dates to support the fantastic finale to the WondLa trilogy.

My presentation includes drawing and discussing how the WondLa books came to be. Attendees will receive the third limited edition WondLa sketchbook for free. And, of course, I will sign just about any book (or gaming materials) that you bring – though different stores have different signing policies, so its best to check with them beforehand.

tour_FlyerSM

As well, Angela and I will both be attending the LA Times Festival of Books in April at the USC campus. Though The Battle of WondLa will not be available for sale then, I will be signing all my previous titles. Hopefully I’ll see you there!

PS – I am hoping to add some additional dates for our local friends in Massachusetts, so stay tuned…

4. Entertainment Weekly Exclusive: “The Battle for WondLa” Cover Revealed

If you’ve been following this blog for the past couple of months, you know I have been sharing much of my process for the upcoming cover to the third and final book in the Wondla trilogy,  The Battle for WondLa.

WondLa3

Entertainment Weekly has finally revealed the cover to the finale to WondLa, due out in stores next May. As well, we’ve shot a little video to show a bit of my process in creating the cover. Let me know what you think.

5. The Search for a WondLaful Cover (IV)

The final stages of creating the artwork for The Battle for WondLa dust-jacket required me to set down my pencils, pens and paper and grab a mouse, Wacom stylus and keyboard.

As proud as I am of my inking capabilities, I never create the perfect ink drawing. Cleanup is required. Nowadays I correct errors in Photoshop, but way-back-when I would “white-out” the part I wanted to fix in white acrylic paint, then redraw over it. You can see this technique here in a piece from The Spiderwick Chronicles. Look closely at Byron’s wings.

Swick

Because India ink is so vibrant, it requires A LOT of white paint in order to mask the error and provide a decent background to re-ink upon. In the end, you are drawing on a bumpy surface of blobbed on paint. I am heartened when I learn that even the most accomplished ink-masters dealt with whiting out mistakes. Here’s a close-up of an original Garth Williams drawing from Charlotte’s Web.

garth

The yellowing of the paper has made his corrections more apparent. Charles Dana Gibson would meticulously patch in a new piece of board to fix his inking mishaps. Once the piece is photographed for reproduction the white-out (or the seams from the patch) would vanish and give the appearance of a perfect ink drawing in the final reproduction. With a home art studio housing new(ish) technology, I now scan my ink drawings and upload them directly into the art director’s ftp folder. This allows for digital cleanup and fixes with incredible freedom.

My first exercise that I run it through is the mirror flip. A common practice in art school, it simply requires looking at a reflection of your artwork. With the image in reverse, errors become more apparent. Let me show you:

This is a scan of the finished ink drawing from Chapter 6 of The Wyrm King from Beyond The Spiderwick Chronicles. Can you see error in the drawing? I couldn’t while I was working on it, so I’ll give you a clue: It has to do with Nick, the boy in the lower left wearing the seaweed cap.

NickINK

Here is a close-up of Nick scanned for print (a 600 dots per inch [dpi] bitmap).

Nick1

Now I shall mirror-flip it in Photoshop. The error becomes more apparent in this reversed image – the axis of his eyes are off (among other facial features). A quick digital fix will show how subtle tweaks to line art can make a big difference.

Nick2

In Photoshop, not only can I erase dust, ink droplets and spatter, I can also alter the drawing itself. Here I am nudging the eye back up a bit and rotating it slightly.

NICKtransform

I can also erase any inconsistencies in the line work and redraw whatever needs to be done. Compare the original artwork (left) with the cleaned-up version (right). (Click to see a hi-res image)

NickCompareAnd here is the final printed image.

spread

Of course, this begs the question: Why not just ink the whole thing digitally? Because I like to have a physical piece of art when all is said and done. I want something that’s been held and made by human hands. And, despite these tweaks and cleanup, I want some of the ink blobs, smudges and errors created when by drawing by hand. That is part of the charm for me.

That in mind, I tend to err on the conservative end when cleaning up my ink drawings digitally. More often than not, the original drawing looks pretty close to the final printed image.

Chap1INK

Chap1COLOR

And here is the inked artwork of Eva for the cover to The Battle for WondLa. I got lucky on this one and it required little clean up (I fixed the pattern on the muzzle of the boomrod, removed strands of hair, and erased lines where her hand gripped the Omnipod). Now she is ready for color, but more on that next time…

6. The Battle for WondLa: First Draft Completed

Fellow Orbonians, the first draft of The Battle for WondLa is completed and with my editor. While he reads it over (along with my beta-readers), I am beginning to design the third and final cover.

firstdraft

But first, some “First Draft Fun Facts”:

The Search for WondLa: 221 manuscript pages, 51,000 words

A Hero for WondLa: 237 manuscript pages, 61,000 words

The Battle for WondLa: 230 manuscript pages, 59,000 words

The first two books took about 6 months to write (with interruptions). I did this one in about 4. Final word count for the first two books is right around 70k words, so there will likely be a bit more added in the 2nd and 3rd drafts (usually its clarification of things and more description).

Now, the cover.

moelskin

These covers have been somewhat tricky for me. My main goal in the image is to present an intriguing world with compelling characters – all without trying to give too much of the plot away. The design went through an overhaul from the first book’s transition from hardcover to paperback (which you can read about here). The second book had a large-scale scene also intent on enticing new readers.

HeroForWondLa

Now we come to the final chapter in Eva Nine’s ascension to a true heroine and so I want to depict her teetering on the edge of two worlds: that of a passive character versus a character of action. Or it is the transition of an individual naive to the world around them to one who is cognizant of their surroundings. Essentially, a symbolic image of the child-Eva becoming a young adult.

I have to start with reacquainting myself with Eva. Sure, I scribble sketches of her in scenes throughout the writing process like the sketch above done back in January in my Moleskine journal.  However, I still need to draw her portrait to mark the transformation she is going through from book to book – like this image of Eva as she appears near the end of book three:

Eva

Then I am off to find inspiration. Émile Bayard‘s iconic image of Cosette sweeping from Victor Hugo’s 1862 classic, Les Misérables, gives me a despairing feeling that I hope to capture in this third cover.

Cosette

You can see Bayard’s influence on this sketch of Eva, here.

boomrod

So I continue to explore and pursue the perfect cover image: one that entices readers while accurately exhibiting the mood and tone of the story and one that satisfies my artistic vision. Its a tricky act to be sure, but one I thoroughly enjoy doing.

7. The Battle for WondLa

For my loyal readers following the adventures of Eva Nine and company, I can finally reveal the title of the third and final book in the WondLa trilogy.

The Battle for WondLa plot picks up shortly after the end of the second story, A Hero for WondLa. The story has been outlined thoroughly and I am in the process of writing the first draft, which I hope to complete this spring. In all, the writing and illustrating will take most of this year putting the release date for Battle early in 2014.

desk

That’s a long wait, I know. But I want this finale to be exciting and deliver what has been promised in the first two installments. You will see a return of most of the main characters from both books. This includes fleshing out of smaller characters that were introduced already in the previous stories, like Caruncle from book 1:

“A grotesque, lump-faced, heavyset character strolled over to Eva. Striking cobalt blue wattles hung near its tusked snout in front of large mustard eyes. Its heavy natty jacket was worn and frayed, and it dragged on the ground, concealing most of the creature.”

The Search for WondLa, page 361

Yes, the adjectives do go on a bit here. That is because I didn’t have time (or the page space) to add an illustration of Caruncle. I had sketched him out early on and used the sketch as my point of reference when I was writing him in.

Caruncle

Besides revisiting some familiar faces, there will be a new character introduced as well. And sadly, there will also be a some characters that don’t make it to the end of Eva’s story. Hopefully in the end, it will make for some entertaining and imaginative reading.

Thank you all for your kind praise, interest and words of encouragement. It keeps me going. Look for more WondLa news here soon!

8. A Hero for WondLa Sketchbook

Just as was done with The Search for WondLa back in 2010, Simon & Schuster has printed a limited edition sketchbook featuring some of the designs that went into the illustrations for A Hero for WondLa.

Throughout the year, I handed out these 32-page, 2-color softcover sketchbooks at my various appearances. If you missed me, fear not, for I have sent a signed bundle of books over to my pal Stuart Ng.

These were printed in an edition of 2000. The first sketchbook is long gone (in fact, I only have a few copies here in the studio for my library), so once Stuart sells out of his stock, that will be it until we release the third sketchbook next fall to coincide with the release of the third WondLa book.

The sketchbook was put together by my good pal, John Lind, and designed right here in the studio. It was tough choosing my favorite sketches to jam into the 5 x 7-inch presentation, but we did it. And I hope you enjoy it.

9. Friday Fan Art

This week we received some Wondlaful drawings inspired by the WondLa trilogy from magnificent Maine.  Neil is an aspiring writer and artist who gains much inspiration from reading books and looking at other artist’s illustrations (I definitely know what he means by that). Check out this awesome profile series Neil has created featuring some of our favorite Orbonian residents.

Nice work, Neil.  You’ve done a great job capturing some of our most beloved friends (and foe).  I love how you’ve included Eva’s messy hairstyle, Rovender’s furrowed brow, and Besteel’s sinister grin!

Though it is important to draw inspiration from artist’s one admires, it is equally important to develop your own ideas.  Here, Neil has rendered his own illustration – depicting a girl in front of a large mysterious house.  Is she just arriving at the house or has she just left in a hurry?  Is there anyone or anything else in the house?  Is she frightened and if so why?  One intriguing picture has the potential for so many different stories and here Neil has tactfully given us just enough information to get those storyboard gears rolling.  When you look at Neil’s drawing what do you see?

Keep writing, keep drawing, keep dreaming.

12. Friday Fan Art

This week’s Friday Fan Art is from Paige, an artist whom I met on tour that found creative inspiration from the WondLa series.

It is a huge compliment for me to receive artwork from artists (at any technical level) who have been inspired by my work. Especially to strengthen technical ability. I learned so much copying artists that I admire. In fact, I still continue to do so as an exercise in style and technique.

The piece above is from a young up-and-coming artist, Paige, whom I met while on tour. Paige likes to work with digital media as well as more traditional methods such as drawing and painting. She told me she was inspired to draw a scene not illustrated in The Search for WondLa:

The cerulean creature with backward-bending legs held up his palm. “I am Rovender Kitt, an old creature in a new world.”

“I am Eva… Eva Nine,” said Eva with a smile, mimicking his gesture. “I am a new creature in an old world.”

- Pg. 102, Chapter 10, The Search for Wondla

Well done, Paige. There is some beautiful line work here (I especially like the Art Nouveau design motif).  I wish the best of luck to you and hope that you continue to create.  Whether you are an old creature or new, my message is the same:

Keep drawing, keep dreaming.

13. Another WONDLAful Tour!

This year marked a decade of touring for my books (the first tour being for The Spider & the Fly back in the fall of 2002). And, though the travel hasn’t become less stressful, I still love coming to a bookstore, school or library and talking books. I can’t thank you all enough for making it all worth the while.

Each tour has a million magic moments packed into 2-3 weeks. I try to take as many pictures as I can to record it all, but it is fruitless. I have to rely that my memory will hold and savor all the warm handshakes and bright smiles that I encountered while crossing the country.

Of course, some of these memories are not so cheery. The day A Hero for WondLa was released was also the day my cell phone was abuzz with the sad news of Maurice Sendak’s passing. Though I knew Maurice’s health was in decline, this was hard news to hear. My mind whorled with memories and questions and I reached out to those whom I knew were close with him to offer condolences.

That night, at a Santa Monica Barnes & Noble, I stood in front of a crowd consisting of Hollywood friends, and even some old art buddies from my gaming days, and read Where the Wild Things Are in honor of Maurice. Everyone cheered and joined in. It was glorious and saddening.

From Los Angeles I worked my way up to San Francisco and visited old friends, like Valerie and her staff at Hicklebees. This is an unforgettable independent book store that actively supported the launch of Spidewick way-back-when.

At Books Inc. I received one the the BEST INTRODUCTIONS EVER from the hilarious and animated store manager, Jerry Thompson. Check it out:

Though I’ve toured every year for the past decade, there are still places in the US I have yet to visit. Phoenix, Arizona was a highlight for me – not just because it was my first time there – but also I was able to visit some fans at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital and talk books thanks to my continued involvement with the Starlight Foundation.

14. Wired Loves HERO!

Jonathan Liu’s (Wired magazine) stellar review of The Search for WondLa a couple of years back, made me one happy geek. Especially because it was posted on Wired’s Geekdad blog, which is like a big kid’s blog custom-made with everything I adore in this world.

Hopefully his tantalizing review of Hero for WondLa will hold  you over until next Tuesday’s release. In fact, be sure to check back in with Geekdad next week for an interview with me where I talk all things WondLa.

16. Paperback WondLa

This week, The Search for WondLa was released in paperback. Its now at an affordable softcover price, and yet, still retains the plethora of 2-colored interior art – yay!

What do you think of the new jacket design? You can read about how it came about here. The book also sneaks a peek at chapter 1 of Hero for Wondla, due in stores May 8th.

Gearing up for the release of Hero, Simon & Schuster relaunched the Wondla website with a NEW augmented reality game where you have to fly Hailey’s airship in search of Eva Nine. To  play, simply download the augmented reality key, the required software, and zoom off to test your piloting skills. Have fun! I’ll see you on tour soon.

17. “Wonders of the Future” WondLa Giveaway!

As many of you know, the second installment of The Search for WondLa trilogy is about to hit shelves in May, but here is your chance to read the book and see the art before everybody else – announcing the “Wonders of the Future” Wondla Giveaway Contest!

The contest is simple: What is your vision of the future?

My vision of Eva Nine’s futuristic world contains many artifacts that are still daydreams in our real world – Hovercars, robots and holography are an integral part of her day-to-day life. So what do you think our future holds?

Here is what I am looking for:

1. A full color image of your vision of the future rendered in any medium you like (including sculptures or even animation). This vision of yours can be an item that has yet to be invented, an undiscovered creature, a new form of transportation…if you think it will (or should) exist tomorrow, then I want to see it!

2. A quick (4-5 lines) description of what your vision is and how it may impact our lives.

What I really want you to do is USE YOUR IMAGINATION.

“Wah! I’m not a good artist!” you say. That doesn’t matter.

I will be judging on originality, innovation, and creativity. It doesn’t matter if you are a good drawer or not. It doesn’t matter if you are a two-year old kid, or an eighty two-year old kid…all entries will be accepted.

And those entries have to be in front of my bespectacled eyes by APRIL 20th, 2012

You can send them to me at: [email protected]
*Please title your email “Wonders of the Future Contest Entry” and include your name, age and jpeg file of your entry.

Once you enter, you’ll receive a link and password that will allow you to sneak a peek at a secret online gallery displaying the art for A Hero for Wondla! Yes, you read that right. It’s right here on this very site! Hidden away from prying eyes except for those who enter…

The winning entry will be sent a signed Advanced Reader’s Copy of A Hero for WondLa, a signed copy of the limited “Hunger Games Edition” of The Search for WondLa (given away at select theaters at the opening of The Hunger Games film), a signed limited edition sketchbook as well as a signed and numbered limited edition print!

Winners will be chosen by myself, my loverly wife Angela, and my trusty assistant Ashley. We will announce and post the winning entry on my site April 23, 2012 and I will FedEx your winning package to you that day!

…sound cool? Then get drawing and GOOD LUCK!

PS – with apologies to all my international fans, this contest is for US residents only.

18. “Hero” in Stores May 8th!

Mark your calendars, Orbonians, in just a couple of months, the sequel to The Search for WondLa will be released in bookstores everywhere.

I’m excited to share with you my latest effort in words and pictures. In fact, there will be over 50 illustrations detailing Eva’s adventures with her friend, Rovender Kitt, as well as showcasing new human (and alien) characters.

Just as was done with the first book, I’ve created a companion limited edition sketchbook that will be available for FREE at signings on my May book tour and at other events throughout the year. I’ll post details about that as soon as I receive them.

I can also tell you that Teri Hatcher has returned as the narrator for the audiobook version of Hero. As I had mentioned back in 2010, I am delighted to have Teri on board for the WondLa trilogy.

…and Teri said (back in 2010), “As a mom and huge fan of the author, I was honored to lend my voice to bring this magnificent story to life. It’s an exciting adventure for any child to hear, with heartfelt lessons about love and relationships, friends, trust and courage.  The Muthr/daughter one is especially beautiful. Tony has created powerful and colorful characters, you can’t help but love or love to hate. It was a pleasure to be a part of this audiobook production.”

How awesome is she?

What about the Augmented Reality feature, you ask. Will there be more? You bet! Along with the team at Simon & Schuster, I’ve been working closely with the folks at Total Immersion to create a new interactive flying experience for those who want to explore the book world one step further…but more on that next time…

19. Fantastic WondLa Review

On this fantastic February Friday we are featuring a video book review from the very talented Sarah Laties.  Sarah is the Special Projects Assistant at the Children’s Book Council (known as the CBC). This book review is one of many that CBC features for Children’s and Young Adult titles they love in a segment titled “Book Stop”.  In this video Sarah is both the featured reviewer and film editor for her review of The Search for WondLa!  Check it out and let me know what you think…

Question: Um…when are you getting your own TV segment, Sarah? Seriously, I hope you continue to produce more sophisticated and fun book reviews.  You did a phenomenal job and thank you for your compliments (I can’t wait to hear what you think of A Hero for WondLa).

Keep reading, keep creating…

20. What to Draw?

I am happy to tell you that all sketches for the interior art for Hero for WondLa are complete and I am now inking them like a madman. The art production will take me into the end of January after which the book will be ready to send off to the printer…and just in time for its May release.

As I read through the manuscript with my illustrator’s hat on, I realized that with WondLa I am often faced with the same dilemma I had with the Spiderwick books – What image do I draw? What scene or action is the right one to illustrate? How can I present the story to the best of my abilities?

My general rule when illustrating the chapter images in a novel is to render the most exciting scene from the chapter without giving away too much. I want to entice the reader to keep going, turn the page, read just one more chapter, before they put the book down. Sometimes I pull it off, sometimes I don’t. It is a tough balancing act.

I know what you’re thinking, “Why not illustrate the scenes in chronological order? Why not illustrate the opening passage of the chapter?” Because often I find those passages are not that exciting. Usually, the opening lines of a chapter are a setup leading to a turning point in the plot contained somewhere later in the chapter. If I were only to illustrate opening lines, you would not have gotten this in chapter 32 of The Search for WondLa:

…instead, you would have seen an illustration of Eva reuniting with Muthr in the Royal Museum of Solas. Sure, it would have been a nice emotional moment, but you wouldn’t see how menacing the pillar guards are. Besides, this was one of the first sketches I did for the book. I couldn’t wait to finish it. This leads me to my first rule of thumb on choosing a scene to illustrate:

If I think its cool, chances are the reader will too.

Let me elaborate: If I am excited to draw something, that enthusiasm is going to come through in the work. I’ll put in the extra effort to render it to the best of my ability and hopefully the reader will respond positively. Of course, there are other reasons for choosing a particular scene to illustrate. Here are some of my determining factors:

Reader Comprehension – An author can spend pages describing what a scene looks like, (sometimes bringing the story to screeching halt) or simply show what something looks like. This approach is used in my picture books and I have adopted it into my middle-grade novel illustration. It has helped especially in complicated, otherworldly things in WondLa, like the towers of Lacus (as seen above). I want my younger readers to enjoy the story and not have to labor too hard over the text.

Elaborate on a Point – Sometimes I want emphasis on something in the text

21. (A Gamerrific) Friday Fan Art

I have always been a fan of classic board games, so when I came across this Friday’s Fan Art I knew I had found a gem.  Take a look at 9 year-old Liam’s beautiful rendition of The Search for WondLa BOARD GAME!!!  He went above and beyond by choosing an original project idea for his 4th grade monthly book report project. “The Search for WondLa would make a great game!”  Liam had exclaimed to his (totally cool) mom before he began to design his own journey through Orbona.

Here you see Liam hard at work with the beginning planning stages of the game.  To his left is the cover of the book and a handmade Omnipod, which houses the game’s spinner in the center.  He crafted the spinner by surrounding an old LIFE game piece with modeling clay.  The player needs the spinner to see where to go next just as Eva relied on her Omnipod for direction.

Check out the final product! Liam designed a path from Eva Nine’s Sanctuary all the way to The Ancient Ruins! There are stops along Lacus, Solas, the Campsite and the Oasis on the way.  You can see he even included Lake Concors and the Bliek Mountains on the board to add to the Orbona landscape.  The game board journey aligns with Eva’s actual travel events and all is rendered perfectly with Liam’s awesome painting and drawing skills.  There are also action cards on the board that players can pick up, like:

Cool, right? Pick one of these up and you could be shot forward in the game for a fast win or made to fall back and loose your lead.  He made multiple cards with different player directions on each one.

And here is the inventor himself!  I am so happy to know you are such a big fan, Liam.  Thank you for sharing all of your hard work.

Keep creating, and keep dreaming!

For this week’s Friday Fan Art addition, where we have some lovely drawings by the very talented Elly from Canada.  Besides being a gifted artist, Elly has ambitions to be an aspiring young author and has been plugging away writing books.  Oh, and did I mention that this creative machine is just 8 years old?  Yep that’s right, check out this variety pack of drawings from some of Elly’s favorite books:  The Search for WondLa, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Kenny and the Dragon, and Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guided to the Fantastical World Around You.  Thanks for being such a big fan Elly, you rock!

Here’s our beloved friend Rovender Kitt from The Search for WondLa.  Look’s like he’s ready to travel…

Check out this rendition of Grahame, the brainy dragon from Kenny & the Dragon.  Is he reading one of your books Elly?

Elly mentioned that she chose to be Jared Grace from The Spiderwick Chronicles for her school’s “Book Character Dress-up Day.” I wanna come!

Knock out drawing of Knocker Elly.  Definitely would NOT mess with this guy….

Keep up the hard work Elly, at this rate I’m certain you’ll succeed with your creative talents.  Keep drawing, keep dreaming!

24. Realizing Rovender Kitt (conclusion)

Let me start off by saying the obvious: I am a Star Wars nut. I was seven years-old when I was first whisked off to a galaxy far, far away. I’ve collected the toys, the ephemera, met the actors…heck, I’ve even reported on Star Wars. Like many of us, George Lucas’ vision had a tremendous impact on my imagination as I am sure Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon had on his.

As the story and characters of WondLa developed, I conjured up the things I loved about Star Wars. My hope was to instill some of that boyhood wonder into my own story.

After toying with the possibility of re-illustrating Edgar Rice Burroughs’ A Princess of Mars, I found a form and shape that I liked for my alien character…but something wasn’t quite there yet. He looked a little lighthearted, perhaps a bit comical, and that wasn’t the curmudgeonly mentor figure that I was writing about. So I held onto aspects of his design that I liked, such as the long legs and thick forearms – features that seemed Star Warsy, but not too Star Warsy (its an adjective. You know what it means. Feel free to use it).

The face was a different story. I wanted a face that spoke of intelligence before the character itself spoke. I wanted a face that could express emotion. A face that could act and convey what the character was feeling from my line-drawn illustrations.

This “cat-frog” design didn’t work for me. Somehow, Rovender looked too much like a Spiderwick creature here, and I wanted a character design that said “alien”. Then, one night while watching a documentary on penguins of the Antarctic (from the BBC’s Planet Earth series), I sketched this.

This looked like an alien that was intelligent, that could talk, that was capable of expressing many moods. And the flight jacket was just the right amount of Star Warsiness that I wanted (you can use that word, too). On top of that, I’d hit upon the notion of “distinctly-marked” alien types as opposed to incorporating the earthy, mottled patterns I had continually used in Spiderwick. (Be

Also, Ang will be presenting and signing as well for her new picture book, Say What? Both of us will be speaking Saturday, September 3rd at the Children’s Stage. Here is the schedule:
