1. What I Learned From Vivian

10711260_10152443408554436_1850990965_n

FRIENDS!! If you are like me, you have a great group of friends. My friends teach me the lessons of life by the way they live. My friend Lucy is a servant. My friend Nancy has a huge loving heart. My friend Ronnie taught me how to draw cartoons. My friend Leana is wise. My friend Karen is my party friend, always bringing us all together to laugh. My friend JoAnn is a chef! My friend Juanita is a creative soul. My friend Rachelle is soft-hearted. My friend Lin is a kindred spirit. My friend Sue is an amazing teacher. All my artist friends AMAZE me! … the list goes on. All are unique. All are a part of my heart. I am thankful!

Last week I spent time with my Vivian friend. We were going to go visit our friend Clara in a nursing home. I wrote out a little card and tucked it in my purse. When Vivian got to my home she came bearing flowers, magazines and muffins! All were for Clara. I watched Vivian talk to Clara. She was all there, in the moment, not thinking about what she was going to do when we left. She was completely present and asking Clara this and that. It was wonderful to watch. Her heart was bursting with love. It made me smile.  THANK YOU VIV!

You see, to have friends you have to be a friend. We can all improve.

You have to get outside yourself and look into their faces and participate in their lives. Lives touching lives makes us all better people.

2. Why it’s great to be a Dad :)

Life is different when you have a child. It means finally growing up and taking responsibility for someone else. Someone who needs love, affection and to be shown the right developmental path. You want a well rounded, caring, thoughtful, enquiring, … Continue reading

3. BFNBT#24-And on to work in Boston

After such wonderful time with The Queen (and Poppi), it was time to get back to work. My parents really love me, but had no interest in seeing me at work. Yet. So off they went and I got back down to it.

This is a sad post, as it is a stop at the Curious George Bookstore, which has since closed. It was a really cute store.

Curious George Bookstore

It was located right near HARVARD. This is the view from the parking garage. Look all acedemic, New England, autumny goodness.

Lovely view from parking garage

And I have to say, there is just something about being on/near a college campus. I feel all that energy, that potential. It is catching.

Anyway, after finding my way (that was me, the dork walking with a Garmin GPS) to the store and finding my way around the construction to get into the store.

Dream Big Sign outside of Curious George

But the best part was when this crew walked down the stairs (one had to duck!).

Curious George event with family

This is my family. Cousins. Who live about 1.5 hours away. And saw my event on my Twitter feed. And came unannounced. And made my day.

They are the kind of family that you see and no time has passed, and the conversation weaves around the past and the present and the future. Unspoken family traditions, remembered family events and unique family mannerisms just reinforce who you are and who you will always be.

Thanks guys!

5. Sing-Off and my Love of all things A Capella and Edgy!

I went to a great college, SUNY Geneseo. There were many clubs, groups, activities, etc. But there was not an A Cappella scene.

Luckily, I did a summer research program at UVA (University of Virginia). Lucky, because it helped me decide NOT to do a Doctorate program in Physics. Good move on my part as far as overall job satisfaction and happiness. BUT also lucky because a friend in the program was from UVA and belonged to a wonderful A cappella group on campus. I still have the CD for the Hullabahoos that season. And have some bootlegged live 1990’s performances of other groups (like the Sil’ Hooettes and the Virginia Gentlemen) on cassette tape somewhere.

AND NOW – the whole country to get into A Cappella with the NBC show The Sing-Off.

I have DVR’d it and am enjoying catching up, so no spoiler alerts, please. I just finished watching week 6.

I am amazed at the Pentatonix young kids arrangements. This was awesome:

And this made me cry:

Rochester wasn’t that far from Geneseo, too bad that all this A Capella goodness was so close and I never saw it.

6. First Fan Mail for Jennifer Fosberry (don’t worry, britches still fit)

So it’s time for another “I’m so cool – I am an author” kind of post. I got my first fan mail. And my second actually, within two days. Here’s an image of the letters (no names of course).

two letters from kinds and my thank you response

Fan mail and thank you note

These letters show particular effort. I don’t share my address on the web. It’s part of my attempt to have some privacy for my kids. Not that there’s a huge worry about people stalking children’s book authors or their families, but you just never know. So if you want to write me you can always send it to the following address and I will get it:

Jennifer Fosberry
C/O Sourcebooks
1935 Brookdale Road
Suite 139
Naperville, IL 60563

But I don’t know how immediate that will be. So sometimes I give it out if you email and ask.

That was the case with the first letter, I received the following (edited) email:

I am tutoring little girl in ****, CA who adores “My name is not Isabella.” She wanted to write you a fan letter. I bought her the book after her grandma died and her mom said she slept with it. She then took it to school and the teacher read it to the class. She and they liked it so much that they wrote about it . Is there a way that I can get her letter and picture to you? She would be thrilled to know you actually got it.

So I shared. And got the lovely yellow letter with lots of great questions. I also got a letter from another little girl just the next day. Both great letters. So of course I wrote them back. See the cool Doctor Seuss notes. Don’t you love them?

I hope that they will love getting my letters as much as I enjoyed getting theirs.
