The wave of promising young female cartoonists that we've all been seeing change the face of comics got a bit of an endorsement with the release of this year's nominees for the Russ Manning the Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award.
The Manning Award, as it's commonly know, is presented every year at the San Diego Comic-Con as part of the Eisner Awards to "a comics artist who, early in his or her career, shows a superior knowledge and ability in the art of creating comics."
The 2016 nominees are:
The year creepeth on and now the Russ Manning Award nominees has just been announced. Presented to “the most talented newcomer” this award, named after the legendary Tarzan artist, salutes up and coming artists. Nominees are selected by a committee consisting of representatives of the West Coast Comics Club and Comic-Con International. The winner is chosen by past Manning award winners and Russ Manning assistants and will ne annoucned during the Eisner Awards on July 25 at Comic-Con International in San Diego.
Past winners include Dave Stevens, Jan Duursema, Steve Rude, Scott McCloud, Art Adams, Eric Shanower, Dan Brereton, Jeff Smith, Gene Ha, Alexander Maleev, Goran Sudzuka, Eric Wight, David Petersen, Cathy Malkasian, Eleanor Davis, Marion Churchland, and Tyler Crook. After a bit of controversy over the selection process for the last few years, these look to be back on track.
The 2014 nominees are:

• Vanesa R. Del Rey, artist of Hit (published by BOOM)
• Stephan Franck, writer/artist of Silver (published by Dark Planet)
• Anders Lazaret, artist of The Brave (published by Mythos Comics)
• Greg Smallwood, artist of Dream Thief (published by Dark Horse)

“After a bit of controversy over the selection process for the last few years” What is that supposed to mean?!?! I only ask because I was nominated last year.
I believe the controversy was that some artists were nominated in successive years, so they had more than one chance to win

but that’s a silly controversy.
I was nominated twice because I managed to self publish two 140+ page graphic novels in the time frame the rules require. It has to be within your first two years of being published. Maybe it’s an honor to be part of a controversy!!
