I have just had the pleasure of visiting with schools in upstate New York. Smith School and Canisteo-Greenwood School both hosted family literacy nights while I was in town, and what a great way for the schools to bring their community together in celebration of the book! I spoke at both events and the students loved having that extra time with the author. They introduced me to their parents as if we were old friends!
And BOTH schools put on Punk Farm skits! The kids were psyched, as was I! I love watching creative (and brave) teachers put on performances of my books. A true honor.
Here is a photo of the players at Canisteo-Greenwood:
Also throughout the night, kids made bookmarks and other bookish crafts. There were also prizes to be won! Raffle tickets were given just for showing up and the prize baskets were all book theemed. For example, a copy of Bubble Bath Pirates! was given away with bath toys and a copy of Punk Farm was given away with a basket of instruments. And the homerooms with the most students in attendance won a set of books for their classrooms! Brilliant, right?!
Thank you to all of the superb educators and parent volunteers who pulled these nights together!
Today I had a first. I presented in a chapel! I can now check that off my bucket list. I had a great time visiting with the kids at River Oaks Baptist school!
Hamilton Elementary completely blew me away with what they called "JJK Day". I have visited so many wonderful schools so far in 2011 and would blog about each of them if I was more organized and if deadlines didn't get the best of me. But I'd be remiss if I didn't share some pictures and videos of what Jennifer Lucas did over at Hamilton El in Houston, TX. She created "JJK Day", which was an end of the year celebration and classrooms needed to win their way into the presentations. Kids worked together to make the most amazing videos! And Jennifer and her library aide even donned their Lunch Lady and Betty costumes for the day!
Check out the decorations put up around the school:
And the craziest part of the day—it almost didn't happen! It was scheduled for February 4th. I was in Houston for the week, but with the impending "snow storm", school had been canceled preemptively. Luckily, it all worked out with schedules for me to return to Houston for this awesome day!
Here are some of the videos that were made for the contest:

School has been out for summer, but when I was visiting Warner Elementary in Houston last spring, I was delighted to learn that librarian Regina Moss included Punk Farm in their library's mural. What an honor! I would say, their mural quite literally ROCKS!

I can't believe you just posted this picture this morning! I just happen to logon looking for pictures of your big Times Square advertisement, and I see my library! Too Cool! Yes, I have to say, Warner Elementary ROCKS everyday! Thanks for posting it! ~~Gina
Mark Lynch has been covering my work on his show, Inquiry, since 2001. Mark is also that art teacher I had who told me to "forget everything I learned" upon learning that I read a "How to Draw Comics" book. In this year's interview, we cover the continuing Lunch Lady saga and I reveal info on my return to picture books in Fall 2011 and what's next for Punk Farm!
Eiland Elementary in Houston, TX hosts a Young Author's Day every year. To help get the students psyched up about literature, the teachers dress up as book characters. Check out the 2nd grade teachers below. ROCK!

The Cleveland Browns teamed up with their local library system and created a series of videos of players reading from children's books. Here is Josh Cribbs, Wide Receiver and Kick Returner, reading Punk Farm.
This may come as to a surprise to everyone, but I was never much of a football player. I think I played on the schoolyard once and broke my arm.

Awesome. I love how he gets into the song, then freezes as he shows the illustrations. Pretty cool.
Oh and you are very talented. Good job, look forward to reading the Lunch Lady adventures. Though when I see the cover I keep hearing Adam Sandler's lunch lady song in my head with Chris Farley dancing around him from Saturday Night Live.
I LOVE it! I can't wait to show this to my students on my new SMART board when school starts. Is there going to be another installment in the Punk Farm saga? My students wanted to know last year how many of the books are there, and could I get them ALL.
Yesterday I had a great visit with the students and teachers of Rye Elementary School up in New Hampshire. Today I received this great picture in my email inbox! The school is celebrating Read Across America Day and the students dressed up as their favorite book characters. Looking good, Holly!
This announcement is a bit late, as this exhibit has been up for two weeks now, but I have an exhibit up and there are still two weeks left to catch it! If you live near Beverly, MA, head on over to the Montserrat College of Art to see a collection of the original paintings from my books.
Hi Elaine - Very cool! I'll be speaking at the college on the 26th and will be helping the Beverly Public Library kick off their summer reading program as well!
I'm not sure of all the details on the day. The first class I speak to starts at 9 or so. Not sure if they are having me give a public lecture or not. Maybe call the college?
I'd be delighted to speak at your reading council. My wife Gina helps me keep all of those events in line. She can be reached at gina at studiojjk dot com. Thanks!
A mother-son book club in Miami just shared these great photos of their book club meeting with Punk Farm. They read the book, listened to the Punk Farm music, discussed the story and then made their own instruments and had band practice!
That is the coolest!
Check out these great pictures:
Thank you to Danielle Joseph for sharing all of this info. Not only does she put together way cool book club meetings, she's also a writer and is expecting her first YA novel to be published in May '09. Congratulations, Danielle! Check out her website here.
Copies of the Japanese edition have finally come in. And they look so cool!
Oddly enough, they include the English character of "J" for my middle initial, but use Japanese characters for the rest of my name. And to be honest - I don't know what anything says in the book. I think that's pretty neat. I would love to know what the literal translation is. Perhaps someday I will meet someone who speaks Japanese and at that moment, I will have the book on me at the time!
Enjoy this little peak at the book.

Hi Jarrett Love your amazing blog, inspiring to my fledgling feeble blogger attempt. We actually showed together at the New Art Center of Newton (Ceci Mendez). I especially enjoyed those "the making of" segments, and your raw sketchbooks. So savvvvvy. Good luck on your tour douglas florian
Studio JJK is all about deadlines these days, BUT - I wanted to write a quick write up on how AWESOME Rock n Romp was last Sunday. Never did I ever think I would see my name on the bill outside of a bar.
It was a great day filled with cool kids who had cool parents. To read a more detailed account of the day (and from a parent's perspective), check out what Scurvyann had to say here. And since I didn't have a camera (above pic was taken with my phone), I did a search on Flickr to see if anyone posted any pictures of the RnR and sure enough - someone did.
If you have a Rock n Romp near you, GO! I can't wait to get to more of them.
I just received a poster that Random House produced. This is definitely a Wayne's World - 'We're not worthy' moment...
Pictured counterclockwise, starting at the left: Punk Farm, The Pokey Puppy, Cat in the Hat, Babar, Duck & Goose, Frederick the mouse, Veronica and Princess Baby.

Indeed, an awesome mural!
