Most of the time artists have to create in a confined perimeter. But I usually try to go beyond the boundaries any way I can get away with ;) My submission for Illustration Friday's "confined" theme is one of my dimensional paintings titled "Oriental Evening". My bridge paintings are quite popular so I have done them many ways for many people and each one is unique and yet similar. I think bridges help to break out of the confines and going outside of the frame helps too. I always put in details of life inside the windows in the form of glimpses of men and women, instruments. birds in cages, cups with tea or coffee in them and books, paintings, kitties and dogs. This one I even made some clothes on a line created from handmade paper and all the flowers are dimensional. I hope you enjoy!

The girl's name Amira \a-mi-ra\ is pronounced ah-MEER-ah. It is of Arabic and Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "princess. Feminine form of Amir. My submission for Illustration Friday's "hierarchy" theme.

Last night, I decided to draw something with polar bears for the illustration Friday theme Polar. But when I went to draw one, I really didn't have a clear idea of what the actual animal looked like--and it showed. I had drawn a few polar bear images couple months back, but was never happy with them. So I've decided to tackle the root of the problem - I'll study their form a bit more instead of relying too much on my 'idea' of what they look like.
Here are some things I discovered. They have very long necks! My first drawings basically looked like white versions of black bears or grizzly bears--oops. Polar bears have very long broad noses, flat heads, long necks and almost a woolly type fur. They are also not as cuddly as the multitude of polar bear stuffed toys might lead you to believe. Polar bears are powerful and can be extremely dangerous, can grow up to 10 feet tall and weigh up to 1,700 lbs.
That's a LOT of bear!
As a side note, while I'm working today I'm going to watch/listen to "Raising Arizona" and maybe fit in a walk in this beautiful weather!

love the dimensional quality!
Hi Valerie, yes, this is a fun piece! And the little lady appears to be enjoying her float in the coastal breeze along the shore! Perfectly atmospheric! :o)
She's simply adorable, Valerie. Love the stockings and her little pointed toes!
She IS adorable, I agree, love her look and feel!
Lovely picture and magnificent work :)
I love this and the fact that you made it for someone you love. I was curious about formable foam board, that sounds interesting. If they still do make it I will find some. You always amaze!
Very cool... would love to see this from different angles, to really get a feel for its dimension. ANd you know, we may not always understand the creative process but as long as the end result is fulfilling.. then it was worth the ride!
hello valerie! wow! that is one unique and beautiful gift for your sister!
Hi Val!!

So you're the one who bought up all the foam board.... :o) Great work Val! I was trying to get my eyes to tell my brain what I was looking at. Is it 2D? Is it 3D? is it an optical illusion? Well thanks for explaining it. (My brain was shuting down) I love it! You have agreat creative Knack! I love that Valerie Gallerie! So clever!!Thanks for making my day!
