London. Michaelmas term lately over, and the Lord Chancellor sitting in Lincoln's Inn Hall. Implacable November weather. As much mud in the streets as if the waters had but newly retired from the face of the earth, and it would not be wonderful to meet a Megalosaurus, forty feet long or so, waddling like an elephantine lizard up Holborn Hill.
Every year about this time, the weather starts to go all wild and wacky in the Sacramento Valley. Last week the temps tickled the 100 degree mark; today we are struggling to make the low 70s and rain is on the near term horizon.
But Sacramento is not the only place where weather can be unsettled this time of year. Recalling the many other places I've lived, whether the southeast, north central, east, or southwest, changing weather patterns are on the weather menu all over the country. In North Dakota, they say if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes. And it's still hurricane season until the end of November.
Just for fun, here's a short collection of weather rhymes to kick things off for fall. Maybe one or more will ring familiar wherever you are. Enjoy.
"Fog"
When I look outside my window, And fog is all around, There’s nothing I can see at all, From tree tops to the ground.
"Rain"
Drip. Drip. Patter, pit. Little drops of rain that hit My umbrella. Under it, I’m a perfect fit.
"Wind" (Haiku)
I can hear the sound Of a soulful wind outside, Blowing in the trees.
"Snow"
Crystal flakes go swirling by, Falling from a cloud-filled sky. Will they leave us like a sigh, Or drift in snow piles ten feet high?
"Hail"
What’s that on my window pane, Tapping with a Rat-A-Tat? Cold has quickly frozen rain Hail is falling, just like that!

Thanks for dropping by, Janet. Yes, cool, indeed. Looks like pretty heavy rain over the next few days---and snow in the Sierra. Guess it's that time of year....
Hi viewers and KatGirl Studio fans, guess what came out today?
If you said Daemons in the Mist then you are correct! My debut Young Adult novel Daemons in the Mist is now available in a paperback book edition for only $14.99.
That’s right you can now enjoy this story in both print and e-book form. The book is currently only available from Amazon and the publisher’s website but we will have Indiebound options soon and Signed Editions as well.
She could have been a perfectly normal, albeit a breathtakingly beautiful girl, but she wasn’t, for I knew there were secrets hidden behind her eyes.
Seventeen year old Patrick Connolly has been drawn to Nualla ever since he first saw her, but as the years pass she seems to take absolutely no notice of him. Until, that is, he rescues her from a confrontation in the school hallway. Little does he know that he’s about to be thrust into a world of life altering secrets and things that shouldn’t exist, because the fog and mist of San Francisco is concealing more than just buildings.
Deliriously captivating and extraordinarily soulful, Daemons in the Mist beautifully weaves together two voices to tell the story of what happens when life leads you down a not so normal path.

After some back and forth, I finally dececided on the illustration I wanted to use as my new promo postcard. I finished this piece in the wee hours of Monday morning. I was kind of surprised I sat here Sunday night and worked on this. I rarely paint on Sunday […]
This is the only part I have of a painting I did back in Monterey. The painting lives there with the family that bought it. It has nine pelicans, not only four. I think you can still get the feel of it.
I once spent an entire afternoon in South Carolina watching the Pelicans gad about, from my perch on an antebellum home. I watched them for hours! I love the idea that they are pilots revisiting us. So apt, seeing as that's what they look like as they fly (in squadrons, no less).
Reminds me of when we lived in San Fran--the fog would be so cold and go straight through your clothes, inhale and your lungs were cold.....but the birds didn't mind at all. Lovely---very very atmospheric!
How beautiful.... you captured a gorgeous moment....in true Lolo style! I love Pelicans.... and funny you would mention the "Pilot" connection..... I always thought of them as "Bomber Planes"....and they remind me of my Father....who was a Pilot and did fly planes....
How lucky the family is who owns this.....it is a masterpiece.
Oh, the family that owns this painting must so enjoy this one. I love pelicans...they actually have a breeding ground here and are wonderful to watch. I hope the fires have not destroyed their habitat.
Wow.... How I would love to see the original.... Remember dear to back up and archive all you have! I love this such a soothing feeling. Men how I feel tired..... looks much like a jet lag.... I get just a little done here..... I made the soup for tomorrow.....at east something! Marja will drop by tomorrow!!!! I am happy to finally see her again! All is well though.... Marian came this afternoon to see me and to congratulate Lars. It was good to her as well. Hope to go to sleep early tonight and move my bio rhythm a little. Monday I will have to move 6 hours to the the other side again..... I will do nothing in Singapore, just sleep.
I did a picture once with flying pelicans as part of the composition, based on a dream that seemed to predict my divorce and moving to another country, across the sea. Pelicans of course represents self-sacrificing love...
dear lolo, that looks exactly like my view! such a beautiful beautiful painting, at first i thought it was a photograph. i LOVE pelicans and you captured them brilliantly.
This is a lovely, serene painting. For such ungainly looking birds on the ground they do manage to glide elegantly in the air and your painting refeclects that. I love it! I would love to see in your studio!xx
Beautiful....Lolo,and then you say it's only the half of it ooh dear what a Artist you are. Saw Marianne today it felt like heaven it was just too long ago. And don't let her fool you when she say she can't cook,I had the best Mommy soup since 25years;)) Big hug, Marja
How wonderful Lolo. I can feel the atomosphere along the beach. I love to watch the pelicans glide along. It always amazes me that these huge birds can fly so high.
I've always imagined that pelicans on the wing resemble the old WWII aircraft commonly referred to as "The Flying Boat" or, more affectionately, "Dumbo". :)
Hey Lolo, After you commented on my blog I posted a notice about a contest I entered Annie in on Fifi Flowers blog. If you so choose check it out on my blog then go to hers and I would appreciate a vote for our Annie #36 if you think she is cute and deserves to be painted. Thanks Cris <3
Very lovely! Unfortunately, the outdoors here isn't very inviting at the moment. Ice and snow and brr... But your painter reminds me of warmer days. It won't be long before the oppressive heat has got me down.
It is wonderful! This leaf in front brings so much dept in your painting! Love the atmosphere! Nature sure does wonders! I will now join Felix on the couch. He doesn't feel well so we will sleep downstairs together.
San Francisco, ultimately, is weather and terrain. It's fog curl and cliff erosion, the stooped back of ascent and that moment (exhilarating, triumphant) when the hills turn in your favor and you are tall in a tall place; you have achieved your point of view. You have to think before you go here. You have to decide how strong you feel, how badly you want, how much you are willing...then you set off, you acquiesce to the whip and the rise and the fall.
It is cold for August. The fog has a mind of its own.

What a photo!!!! Aren't you bringing these places into you rather than leaving yourself there? Cape Cod and the things I do and see there are always with me.
Depending on where you live, you might not be able to relate. This summer has been quite rainy for us here in the Maritimes. June was filled with overcast skies, fog and rain. July hasn’t been too bad, except for this past week. Yesterday was the WET. It poured and poured leaving me feeling like a drowned rat at the end of the day.
I shouldn’t complain, because it’s pretty dry out west with forest fires burning out of control. I can take the rain for now, but let’s hope for better weather in August, for everyone!

Nice colors too. I love the rain. It makes me feel more creative. People here in New Jersey have been complaining that it is too "Seattle like" this year.
While much of the country is buried in snow and suffering below zero temperatures with all the perils that accompany such conditions, I should be counting my blessings, right? Well I often count my blessings, and I'm glad I'm not in those parts of the country, never-the-less, grumbling is my right this time of year.
I am one of those miserable people who suffer with SAD. SAD stands for seasonal affected disorder, a condition caused by low sunlight. I live in Southern Oregon, a wonderful place most of the year, but usually for a number of weeks during the winter we live in unrelenting fog. FOG is not good if you have SAD! In addition to causing depression and despair, it is also cold and damp. You may have gathered I am not a happy camper right now.
I was looking at some homeschool blogs this morning and found a terrific blog with a recommendation for help with teaching your child to read. Go to http://thepioneerwoman.com:80/homeschooling/ and read the post for 1/13/09. You don't have to homeschool to be interested in helping your child learn to read.
What kind of weather are you having?

Oh Shari, you don't want to know, but I'll tell you anyway. It reached somewhere around 85 today, beautiful sunny skies and moderate breezes. Just another beautiful day in paradise.

Have you tried one of those special lights that's supposed to have the right spectrum for SAD sufferers? My mother was so concerned about my daughter moving from sunny Colorado Springs to Eugene, OR to attend U of Oregon that she bought my daughter one of those lights. My daughter's never used it, though! LOL
Ahhhh, fog. Lovely lovely fog. This morning we woke up to a good patch of it, but usually we don't get much here in Sacramento. It makes me very homesick for San Francisco. Very. I went outside and just stood there grinning like an idiot.
My next colored pencil project, "Fall", is on hold because some 'real' work (translation=$$) needs to come first, so all of you eagerly anticipating seeing that one will have to anticipate a bit longer, sorry.
Everyone seems to have Thanksgiving on their minds right now (its next Thursday here in the US). I'm thankful I don't have to do a big 'do', to be honest. All the shops have Thanksgiving dinner supplies front and center in the displays, like stuffing and gravy mix and chicken broth and pumpkin pie filling. I'm still itching to make a pumpkin cheesecake. The lasagna craving from the other day has almost completely disappeared, but not quite. Navy bean soup is calling me too. Funny, I'm the same way with food that I am with my art ~ I can't decide!!!
Nice. Your illustrations are beautiful. You really know how to use colored pencils and pastels well. This piece is nice but I was really impressed with the "sour" piece.
Always a fan of your fantastic colour work. Great layers, the foreground characters offer a great contrast to the middle and background, very effective :)
So mysterious and sweet at the same time. You are not only expert at color pencil, but you really know what subjects are best brought out with that media. Yooooouuu! You are so good.
On Mondays I check out a new place in our new town/area. I still have that new place excitement running through me. I've been feeling very antsy and wired and wanting to EXPAND. Oh wait, that's just all the big pretsals I've been eating. :)
During Exploration Monday, I found this quirky bookstore Bill and I named the "Cramped Bookstore." I've never been in such a tight place. It did have character. I will give it that.

Cool! And so's the temperature.
Thanks for dropping by, Janet. Yes, cool, indeed. Looks like pretty heavy rain over the next few days---and snow in the Sierra. Guess it's that time of year....
Thanks for sharing the fun short rhymes, Bill. Very enjoyable!
Thanks, Connie. Sometimes less is more---and lots of fun to play with....
