10. SPONSORED BLOG POST: Breaking Barriers Essay Contest

MLB16_blog_header_130x130

This post is sponsored by Major League Baseball.

January 31st marks the birthday of Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball’s color barrier in 1947.

Have you ever imagined yourself standing on the pitcher’s mound at MLB’s Home Run Derby with thousands of baseball fans cheering you on? Or winning a laptop computer? If your answer is YES, then I’ve got a contest for you!

Sign me up, you say? Wait! You have to be in grades 4–8 and enter an essay in Major League Baseball’s Breaking Barriers Essay Contest for a chance to be one of nine national winners—or the Grand Prize winner!

Ready to get started? Okay, a bit of background first. The Breaking Barriers program started in 1997 as a spinoff of MLB’s 50th anniversary tribute to Jackie Robinson, who broke the color barrier in baseball in 1947. Oh, by the way, he’s my dad. After throwing out a number of first pitches at the anniversary tribute, I found a way to connect kids with Jackie Robinson, values, and baseball. Fifteen years later, the Breaking Barriers Essay Contest has reached over 19 million kids across America, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

The whole point of the Breaking Barriers program is to get kids thinking about values and the importance of having a strong character to face their barriers, just like my father did on the field and as a parent. Believe it or not, writing a personal account of an obstacle you’ve faced is a good way to begin your essay for the contest. Over the years, we’ve heard many incredible stories from kids including: overcoming cancer; getting injured playing a sport; losing a parent; abuse; being the new kid; being the only girl on a baseball team; dyslexia; problems with a sister or brother; being different; and war. I could go on. If you want a chance to win, you have to open up, tell your story, and send your essay, either by mail-in or online, to Scholastic by February 21, 2012. Good luck!

13. Puss in Boots Answers YOUR Questions

Pussinboots2 If you have seen the Puss in Boots movie (rated PG) then you know that Puss can be a bad kitty, but we forgive him because he visited the STACKS to answer YOUR questions. Read on to find out about his boots, his favorite dance move, and working with Shrek.

Do you know who your real parents are?
Puss: Sadly, we were separated shortly after my birth, but rumor has it that my father was a hurricane and my mother a volcano. . .it makes sense to me.

Would you rather be called "adorable" or "enormously fluffy?"
Puss: I would prefer a new term. . . "adora-normous-fluff-able!!!"

What is the worst thing someone called you?
Puss: Dog.

Who is your worst enemy?
Puss: Puss in Boots has no enemies! But I do not care much for bath tubs.

Since you're a criminal, what is one place you've always wanted to rob?
Puss: First of all, I am no criminal. . . I just like to borrow things sometimes, and have a tendency to never give them back.

What is your favorite food/drink BESIDES warm milk?
Puss: There is nothing like a warm bowl of kibble on a cold rainy day.

How much whole milk can you drink?
Puss: How many cows roam the earth?

Do you like ice cream?
Puss: I like the cream. . . ice, not so much.

Do you have a favorite dance move?
Puss: A little jig I like to call. . ."The Forbidden Gato!"

What size are your boots? And what's your favorite type of boot? Cowboy boots? Rain boots?
Puss: My favorite type of boot is located on my little feets at all times. They are comfortable for any occasion. And the size is purrrrrfect.

Do like the song, "These Boots Are Made for Walking?"
Puss: Do I like it? I live it!!

How does it feel to star in a movie about you? Is it better than working with Shrek?
Puss: The green ogre will always be my great friend, but I must admit a close-up on me is much more flattering, baby.

What was your reaction when you heard you were starring in a movie about yourself?
Puss: Meow?

Who do you like better, Shrek or Donkey?
Puss: I know whose bread needs buttering. . . give me the ogre, baby!

How did Shrek and Donkey mess up during filming? Were there any funny bloopers?
Puss: The burro is constantly falling down and forgetting his lines, and the Shrek is always burping and farting. Both of them incredibly unprofessional, but quite funny.

Puss, you're amazing! But why are you so epic? Is it genetic?
Puss: What can I say? It is a Puss thing. . .

14. SPONSORED POST: Arthur Christmas

Axmas-blog-entry-130x130Merry (Arthur) Christmas! Did you ever wonder how Santa delivers all those presents in one night? Well, the new movie Arthur Christmas (rated PG) tackles the big question.

The answer: Santa has a sophisticated, high-tech computerized operation hidden beneath the North Pole! It is run by Santa’s oldest son, Steve, who is the heir to the Santa job one day. Santa’s younger son, Arthur, is sort of a misfit with a big heart. Then there’s a dedicated and loving Mrs. Claus, and Santa’s cranky 136-year-old father, Grand Santa, who hates the modern world and grumbles that Christmas was better "when I was Santa."

One Christmas, when the high-tech Christmas present delivery goes wrong and one child is skipped, Arthur decides to take matters into his own hands. He goes on an unauthorized Christmas mission to get that child her present before Christmas morning. What could go wrong?

Take a peek at the official trailer.

What do you guys think? Are you ready for the holidays? Will you be hitting the theaters for Arthur Christmas? Let us know in the Comments below!

16. SPONSORED POST: Dolphin Tale

Dolphin_130x130_sponsored

This blog post is sponsored by Dolphin Tale.

The Dolphin Tale movie (rated PG) about the dolphin named Winter with a prosthetic tail, comes out in theaters on September 23. To prepare you for the movie, Abby Stone, Winter's actual trainer from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA), has answered some of YOUR questions. Read on to find out more about Winter, the amazing dolphin with a fake tail, and what the life of a dolphin trainer is like.

Q: How did Winter feel about the tail and what was her reaction?

Abby: The prosthetic tail has been a positive experience for Winter and she continues to respond with energy and enthusiasm based on trust and the strength of our relationship. Winter certainly was, and continues to be, an active participant in the training process, helping us determine how and when to advance to the next step. And of course, our approach to training is always fun, motivating Winter to try new things. We were definitely encouraged by Winter’s reaction of curiosity to the various stages as well as her eagerness to test her new tail without the aid of her trainers.DolphinsTale_600w

Q: Is Winter the only animal with a prosthetic, or is it more common now for injured animals to be cured like this?
Abby: Winter is the only dolphin in the world to have a prosthetic that involves the entire tail as well as the joint that connects to the peduncle [the narrow part of the tail that attaches to the fin]. There are a variety of animals that have prosthetic devices to assist with the quality of life -- including horses, elephants, turtles, kangaroos, and birds!

Q: Can Winter have babies?
Abby: Physically, Winter has the proper internal anatomy to have a calf although at this point, she is still too young. Because Winter does not have a tail, it would have to be discussed with our veterinarian.

Q: Does Winter have any enemies at the aquarium?
Abby: Winter is provided with a very safe and loving home at CMA free of any natural predators.

Q: How do you train dolphins to do tricks?
Abby: We teach our animals to do behaviors that come naturally to them in a very slow process using positive reinforcement. We ask the animals to do bits and pieces of a behavior until the animal has the understanding to put all of the pieces together! This process can take a few training sessions, months, or years to train to its entirety!

Q: When will Winter be introduced to Hope? [Hope is the latest rescued dolphin living at CMA. She was found orphaned last December when she was only 3 months old!]
Abby: Our plan is to introduce the two later this year. We are looking at introductions around October or November.

19. SPONSORED BLOG POST Tangled

Tangled This blog post is sponsored by Disney's Tangled.

When the kingdom's most wanted—and most charming—bandit Flynn Rider hides out in a mysterious tower, he's taken hostage by Rapunzel, a beautiful and feisty tower-bound teen with 70 feet of magical, golden hair. Flynn's curious captor, who's looking for her ticket out of the tower where she's been locked away for years, strikes a deal with the handsome thief and the unlikely duo sets off on an action-packed escapade, complete with a super-cop horse, an over-protective chameleon and a gruff gang of thugs. Tangled (rated PG) hits theaters on Nov. 24, 2010.

Here are Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, the actors who provide the voices of Rapunzel and Flynn, to tell us more about the movie. . .

Q: What do you like about Tangled?
Zachary: It's not about a damsel in distress who needs to be saved. It's about a young woman who has dreams and aspirations and needs a partner in crime to help facilitate that throughout the course of the film. So you get all kinds of adventure with someone who's as unrefined as Flynn is; he's a thief. They get into a lot of trouble. There's a lot of people chasing them for different reasons. Flynn can't help but put his foot in his mouth over and over and over again. And yet, because of Rapunzel's goodness, she can see past all that and still see the good guy that's there, and that helps him change a lot too. Plus, there are near-death escapes at least every ten minutes, great animal characters that bring so much life and comedy to the film, swashbuckling, and swinging from either hair or ropes or vines or what have you. There are great chases, great fights and battles. And it's in 3D. So all of your thugs and ruffians are just jumping off the screen at you.

Q: Why did you want to portray Rapunzel?
Mandy: I grew up with the best of the best: The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. What little girl doesn't fantasize about being part of that? I love the Rapunzel's story. It's really, really funny and heartwarming. It has a feel-good, empowering message of being the best version of yourself and overcoming obstacles and challenges—being strong enough to jump over those hurdles and live up to your full potential.

Q:Describe Rapunzel's 70 feet of hair.
Mandy: Rapunzel has a gigantic mass of magical, almost other-worldly hair that's almost its own living entity with all sorts of abilities. It's a pretty hot commodity. Mother Gothel selfishly keeps Rapunzel and her unique powers hidden from the world, using them for her own benefit.

Q: Tell us about Flynn Rider.
Mandy: I think there is a lot more than what meets the eye with Flynn Rider. He comes across as a bit of a lady's man. He's a charming, overconfident thief who finds himself in a precarious situation. He's stolen something and is being chased and finds himself hiding out in Rapunzel's tower. She takes it upon herself to capture him, knock him out, hide his satchel and interrogate him. Then she concocts this plan that she'll give him back his satchel if he helps her escape the tower. The combination of Flynn and Rapunzel is pretty dynamic. She brings out the best in him and he ends up bringing out the best in her.

Q:What is the smolder?
Zachary: Yeah, the smolder.
