1. Inspiration

When my children were little I used to bring out my guitar and noodle around, a lot. I ended up singing little ditties when I put them to bed, playing in the house, and my one of my favorite places to compose, while they were in the bathtub (great acoustics in bathroom, plus a captive audience!) I recorded four albums of music, mostly written while being around my children. My last album was much older as far as the type of songs I recorded. None of the songs were call and response. (Call and response songs are really an important way to involve little ones when singing live)

Both my children are in their twenties now. Guess who hasn't been inspired to write songs for little ones for a long time?

Yesterday I was walking our three dogs and I stopped to speak with my neighbor who moved in, not too long ago. Her daughter Sam is two. Every afternoon they are outside with their watering cans watering the flowers. As I stood there yesterday, it was clear that Sam loves to walk on her tip toes. Her mother called it, tippy toes. I LOVED that. Tippy toes. I ended up singing into the recorder on my iphone as I walked around the rest of the block.

WALKING ON TIPPY TOES

Walking on Tippy toes
Watering the flowers
Hoping that the flower grows
Walking on tippy toes

Walking on tippy toes
Making up a song
This is how the song goes
Walking on tippy toes

Walking on tippy toes
In your little bare feet
Peeking in the windows
Walking on tippy toes

Walking on tippy toes
Like a circus acrobat
Walking tightrope on the garden hose
Walking on tippy toes

Tippy, tippy, tippy, tippy, toes
Tippy, tippy tippy please don’t trippy
On your little tippy toes

Tippy, tippy, tippy, tippy, toes
Tippy, tippy tippy please don’t trippy
You might smoosh your nose

There's something to be said for being open to inspiration!

2. Story Structure

Getting an 'idea' for a story is the 'easy' part. Making it work requires a bit more thinking, planning, experimenting, running in to walls, flying over walls. What's that quote about perspiration as opposed to inspiration?

The story I am working on at the moment is so simple. There's a problem, (which most story's are about) and there is a solution. There is no point where we are in suspense. Hmmm... Now that I wrote that, I think that's a problem in itself. If our character has nothing at stake, it's hard to care if they succeed. It's one thing to create a character we like and care about, but if there is a problem, it can't just 'be solved', period, the end. There needs to be some tension.

I started out writing this entry this morning in an effort to map out the story arc for the piece I am currently working on. Now that I have had a chance to step back and evaluate what I am doing, I can see, I'm not ready to lay it all out yet. More tweaking!

Adios for now.

Barney

3. While we are on the subject of creativity. I found an old song.

I just found a song I wrote in 1977! The lyrics were folded up in a book. Apparently I wrote it in a day. (Which could explain a few things) Considering the last post about what to write, this song reminded me that I have always had the drive. I was 22 when I wrote this. I was attempting to become a singer/songwriter, professionally. This was just when Disco hit and this particular song was a ballad without a disco beat anywhere to be found.

Your Dreams Will Keep You Strong

It's not a case of right or wrong
You knew the first time you sang that song
So don't let them steer you wrong
When you grow older, your dreams will keep you strong

You never fit the shoes they gave to you
Grew so fast you wore the old soles through
Now you want to see what you can do
When you grow older, your dreams will keep you strong

Too many people let time go by
Saving their living for tomorrow
Silently hoping they'll have enough time
Only to grow old and sad, never knowing why

Who wrote the rules to this life we play
How long will it take to throw them away
Listen to your heart, you've got a lot to say
When you grow older, your dreams will keep you strong

Okay, some meter issues, and it's a 'tad' corny, but I was 22!!!!
Just wanted to share the sentiment.

Adios for now.

4. Sunday

It's a drizzly day outside.  I'm supposed to be running on the beach with my dog, Arlo.  We are babysitting for his sister, Lola.  If I leave the house without her, Lola will bark like crazy.  I'm contemplating running with two, giant GoldenDoodles.  I actually practiced yesterday to see how it would be running with two dogs.  It was fine and then I woke up thinking about what it would be like if we came across other dogs.  There are a lot of them at the beach.  Lola seems to bark in a loud squeaky voice whenever she sees another dog.  I'm starting to think I'm setting myself up for a lovely morning.  I really should be drawing, given that my book is due this week.  So, faced with all of these choices, what do I do?  Sit down and write on my blog.  In my blog?  For my blog?  At least it rhymes with jog!

Okay... gotta run.
