2. 9-Year-Old Author Throws Cupcake Book Party

Nine-year-old author and cupcake blogger Carrie Berk just co-wrote Peace, Love and Cupcakes with her mom, Life & Style Weekly editor-in-chief Sheryl Berk.

To celebrate the release of the novel (published by Sourcebooks Jabberwocky imprint), Berk (pictured) hosted a book party at Dylan’s Candy Bar in New York City. Author and cupcake blogger Rachel Kramer Bussel covered the event at Cupcakes Take the Cake.

Check it out: “[The book] is about a group of little girls who form a cupcake club at their school, start a cupcake business, fight bullies and have fun baking, decorating and learning about each other … [the candy store] was set up with a chocolate fountain where you could get Peeps, marshmallows, Rice Krispie treats, pretzels, strawberries or bananas dipped in it, a cupcaketini cocktail, which had Frangelico, Bailey’s and Kahlua (adults only, obviously) and adorable custom mini cupcakes courtesy of Georgetown Cupcake, which managed to replicate the book cover exactly, with glitter!”

facebookeffect.jpgLast night publishing leaders, technology writers, magazine editors, and mediabistro.com founder Laurel Touby mingled at the glitzy book party for David Kirkpatrick. We missed the party, but received a dispatch and that photo of Kirkpatrick (via Gabriel Cid).

4. Oh, the People You Meet at BEA Parties

bealog2010.pngYesterday we prowled BEA parties with Garrison Keillor's dour pronouncement that "Publishing is about to slide into the sea" ringing in our ears.

Our night began at The New York Times' literary party where Ryan Chapman discussed upcoming projects and P.E. Logan chatted about book reviews. Carolyn Kellogg pondered the long night ahead of us, Thomas Rogers critiqued Sex and the City 2, and Leslie Koppenhaver cheered Graywolf Press' good year. Laura Miller shared her feelings about the Lost finale and Jonathan Lethem suggested we read a certain biography of the late, great Nathanael West.

At the Harper Perennial blogger apprecition party in the historic Algonquin Hotel, we talked with Ron Hogan about his reading series and debated publishing profits with Levi Asher. Jurgen Fauth chatted about Fictionaut while Marcy Dermansky explained her upcoming novel. Kevin Smokler talked about book tours. Susan Henderson showed off her new galley and Robin Slick said her son joined the rock band Dr. Dog.

5. Industry Hot Shots Go to Literati-a-Go-Go!

BookExpo America's party season began with a bang at Monday night's annual Literati-a-Go-Go BEA soiree hosted by literary agent, Donna Bagdasarian and publishing industry veteran, David Nudo.

National Book Critics Circle's Jane Ciabattari and John Reed co-hosted the event which was sponsored by Agency212 and Palmer Vineyards.

Held at the posh, Vig 27, publishing industry's who's-who came out in droves. Open Road's Jane Friedman, Sally Richardson of St. Martin's Press, Jon Anderson of Simon & Schuster's Children's Division, and George Slowik of Publishers Weekly were just a few of the power players that intermingled.

"The party was bigger and better than last year," Bagdasarian says and noted it exceeded their expectations.

Many were calling the event the perfect pre-BEA party of the year and perhaps rightly so as the mixed-media crowd consisted of power houses from the film, television, magazine and book publishing worlds -- including BastardLife's Neil Boulton, John Mutter and Jenn Risko of ShelfAwareness Jerome Kramer of Kirkus, Sony Pictures' Mark James and Philip Patrick of Crown Publishing; further evidence of how once separate industries are now colliding.

"BookExpo has always been a place for industry professionals to come together and exchange ideas and make things happen," Nudo says, "The Literati-a-go events also has the same goal in mind."

Guests laughed and exchanged cards while nibbling on hors d'oeuvres and drinking wine. One of the hot topics of the party was the changes in this year's BEA as well as how their roles in the ever-changing book publishing industry have shifted and morphed.

The event did so well Nudo, Reed, Ciabattari and Bagdasarian are already planning their next event.

6. YA Novelists by Day, Rock Stars By Night

In the video embedded above, four young adult authors partied like rock stars last Friday--leading the YA supergroup, Tiger Beat.

Libba Bray wailed on vocals, Daniel Ehrenhaft played guitar, Natalie Standiford played bass, and Barney Miller handled drums. The band headlined the launch party for Sourcebooks Fire, the publisher's brand new YA imprint. GalleyCat missed the party, but Sourcebooks passed along the excellent video.

Here's more from the blog post: "At Books of Wonder, Sourcebooks threw the biggest, baddest YA launch party this side of the Mason-Dixon line. Rocking the house was Tiger Beat ... creatively titled 'YA Song.' From the people that brought you Dr. Seuss... Tiger Beat!"

7. Writers and Rockers Celebrate Riot Grrrl Revolution

emilygould23.jpg

Earlier this week, former GalleyCat editor Emily Gould read alongside the young girl band Supercute! at the 92YTribeca in Manhattan--see all the pictures here.

Along with Sean Fennessey and Elizabeth Spiridakis, Gould helped support Marisa Meltzer's new book, Girl Power: The Nineties Revolution in Music. The book studies "the role of women in rock since the riot grrrl revolution."

GalleyCat missed the event, but TimeOutNY had a great write up of the rock & roll party: "[Supercute!] performed songs in between sets, including a cover of Britney Spears's 'Oops!...I Did It Again.' They also pitched in during blogger Emily Gould's presentation, which began with a performance of one of the dirtiest songs ever recorded, Liz Phair's 'Flower.' While Gould read a cleaned-up version of the lyrics ('Blow Pop queen' subbed in for one of the song's more memorable lines), the girls of Supercute! sang a G-rated version of the song's backing vocals."

GalleyCat missed the reception, but the foundation kindly passed along some pictures from the party. Above, pictured left to right, are Schnittman (Oxford University Press), Morris (Bomb Magazine), and Thomas (Hachette).

13. Algonquin Round Table 2.0

virtiouscircle.jpg

Today this GalleyCat editor hiked to the famous Algonquin Hotel to witness a 21st Century revision of the Algonquin Round Table. During the 1920s, a tough and brilliant group of literary minds that included George S. Kaufman, Dorothy Parker, and Harold Ross met at the Algonquin for daily sessions--nicknamed "The Vicious Circle."

The new group united via Twitter, led by Bethanne Patrick and Denise Berthiaume back to the Algonquin for lunch. Thirty publishing types showed up for the inaugural lunch today, and they hope to hold quarterly lunches in the same spirit.

A few of the new members are pictured here, from left-to-right: Erin McHugh, Berthiaume, Patrick, and Robin Lenz.

"We were trying to think of a name," explained Berthiaume. "Vicious Circle didn't seem like the right name or philosophy for publishing right now. We called it the Virtuous Circle--the complete opposite."

15. Dancing at a Book Party

dancebp.jpgLast night GalleyCat stopped by the powerHouse Arena in Brooklyn, for a night of wine, music, dancing, and books. At the party, the dancers in the photo cut loose to celebrate "Blues, Booze, & BBQ" by Michael Loyd Young--a photographic journey through the Mississippi Delta.

Bluesman T-Model Ford (pictured) played a long, gorgeous set in the middle of the bookstore, grinning like he won the lottery while Brooklynites danced.

While everybody else danced, this GalleyCat editor chatted with Mike Edison about his holiday-themed book trailer and grilled new author Eric Davidson about his upcoming book, "We Never Learn."

bluesbp.jpgHere's more about Young's book: "Blues, Booze, & BBQ, the first book by Michael Loyd Young, documents 150 miles of Highway 61, the famed blacktop road snaking from Memphis, Tennessee down to Greenville, Mississippi. At the halfway point, in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, sits Clarksdale, Mississippi, the city considered the birthplace of the blues and the location of Robert Johnson's famed 'Cross Road Blues' intersection of Highway 61 and 49."

20. Fans Flock for Next Installment in Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" Series

Yesterday marked the release of Brandon Sanderson's "The Gathering Storm," the next book in a beloved "Wheel of Time" series by the late Robert Jordan. As that video reveals, fans mobbed the Brigham Young University bookstore opening at midnight, looking for copies of the sequel. "I've been waiting since I was 16," says one fan.

If you are looking for more "Wheel of Time" news, GalleyCat has written about how the book's network of fans are helping with promotional efforts for the book. Also, we interviewed Sanderson earlier this year about the future of fantasy and digital publishing.

Here's an excerpt from that interview, as Sanderson hinted at the highly anticipated conclusion of the series: "I'm one of four people who have read this ending out of the millions of people who are waiting for it...It was a reverent experience, a surreal experience. I don't think it really hit home for me what I was doing until I sat down and read that...It was a daunting experience saying, 'This is where the 11th book ended, and this is where I've got to end up.' There was a big gap."

21. Scene @ David Sax's Save the Deli Party

savethedeli-party.jpg

After four years on the circuit, GalleyCat knows from book parties—and, let us tell you, cramming upwards of 400 people into Ben's Kosher Deli Monday night to celebrate the publication of David Sax's Save the Deli has to be some kind of record. Which would be fitting, given the number of other world records being set in the room that night—granted, they were all in stunt categories like "most insults flung at a deli waiter in 30 seconds" or "most side dishes ordered in 30 seconds," but a record's a record. Sax (left) invited the owners from several of the delis he writes about in his book—a travelogue of the great delis still operating in North America (with a little side trip to Europe)—and brought in Jelvis, "the Jewish Elvis," for musical entertainment, but you can't go wrong with a free buffet... especially when it includes hot dogs, knish, potato pancakes, and several flavors of Dr. Brown's. (And this picture doesn't even show any of the corned beef or pastrami!)

22. Feminist Press Celebrates 39th Anniversary

feminist-press-2009gala.jpgLast night the Feminist Press at the City University of New York (the oldest continuing women's publisher in the world) celebrated its 39th Annual Women Write the World Gala, and—just as in 2007 and 2008, we asked Amanda ReCupido (the creator of The Undomestic Goddess website) to cover the event for GalleyCat. Honorees as this year's event included authors Arianna Huffington and Taslima Nasrin, along with human rights lawyer Rhonda Copelon and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (who was unable to attend due to a late vote in the Senate). ReCupido writes:

"Copelon spoke about the need for human rights in the United States, especially when it comes to laws protecting reproductive health care and abortion. Luckily, she said, 'there is a new generation of activists emerging to see this through." Huffington echoed her call, saying that "younger women are ushering in a new world.' Nasrin spoke about the need to separate state and religion in every country, saying that 'education and economic freedom alone is not enough.' She also addressed the issue of human trafficking around the world, stating that 'no one is free until all women are free.'"

Each of the women honored have left an indelible mark on women's progress, and Huffington reminded the crowd that each and every one of us has the power to enact change. 'We need to stop looking for someone to save us,' she said. 'Look in the mirror and find the leader within.'"

23. NY Women's Foundation Honors Kristoff/WuDunn Team

Last Wednesday, Amanda ReCupido went to Gotham Hall for the New York Women's Foundation's "Stepping Out & Stepping Up" fall dinner The "Stepping Up" award recognizes New Yorkers who "serve as role models of courageous leadership, vision and commitment to women and girls as individuals and as partners," and this year's honorees included social activists Elizabeth and Herbert Sturz and author/journalists Sheryl WuDunn

and Nicholas D. Kristof. ReCupido spoke with Ana L. Oliveira, President and CEO of the foundation, who discussed how the evening's honorees affect change for women at both the local and global level. (Indeed, Oliveira explained, the Sturzs have founded 24 nonprofit and government agencies between them.)

nywomens-foundation-2009.jpg

WuDunn spoke about the importance of investing in women and girls locally as a prerequisite to investing globally. Her and Kristof's new book, Half the Sky, focuses on women and girls in the developing world, focusing on the issues of human trafficking, gender-based violence, and maternal care.

The evening also included music from Mary J. Blige, who dedicated her performance to the power and unity of women. Other attendees included New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg (as the date of co-chair Diana Taylor), Consul General of Mexico Ruben Beltran, designer Catherine Malandrino, record executive Steve Stoute, and a scattering of additional New York socialites.
