2. ICv2 Digital & Comics Conference Audio: Creativity and Digital

icv2banner.jpg

This is easily one of the most interesting panels I have ever participated in. The panel consisted of:

The Medium and the Message–Digital and Creativity
How will the digital medium affect how comics are created?
- Mark Waid, Chief Creative Officer, BOOM! Studios
- Dave Baxter, Deputy Director of Robot Comics and Senior Agent at Killing the Grizzly
- Alex de Campi, Writer, Director
- Douglas Wolk, Author
- Rantz Hoseley, CEO, Longbox
- Mark Siegel, Editorial Director, First Second Books
- Moderated by Heidi MacDonald, The Beat

Unfortunately, the recording is missing the very beginning of the panel, with Dave Baxter’s answer to my question of how they had decided to approach digital comics to begin with. Luckily it includes Alex di Campi’s .

3. The Walking Dead at NYCC

No, that’s not a reference to what I felt like the Sunday after fighting my way across last weekend’s uber-crowded, nerd sweat fueled NYCC convention floor.  Of course, you know that already.  You know what I’m talking about, people.  I’m talking about the highly anticipated AMC TV adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s much beloved comics series, The Walking Dead, coming to your TV this Halloween (Series premiere October 31st, 10/9 C).

AMC

And let me tell you with no exaggeration, people – you better be there.  And if you’re going out on Halloween, you best DVR that shizz.  It’s looking good.  We’re talking Appointment TV good.  I can’t imagine there’s many Beat readers out there who haven’t read the comic – especially when well respected, taste-making comic book store proprietors from coast to coast, with as varied ouvres as Chris Rosa of LA’s Meltdown Comics to Gabe Fowler of Brooklyn’s Desert Island, are putting the new releases at the top of their own personal reading lists.  But even if you haven’t dived into Kirkman’s magnum opus yet, it looks like the TV series will distinguish itself in a way that will attract new readers without alienating longtime fans of the comic.

Image

I had the pleasure of chatting with the cast and creators of the show at NYCC.  They all seemed to be gelling well  and genuinely proud of the show (Mild Spoilers ahead if you have NOT read the first collected volume of The Walking Dead).

Look! Here’s Shane (Jon Bernthal), Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies), looking awfully cozy for three points of a love triangle…

Shane, looking appropriately guilty next to a clueless Rick and a lovely but distracted Lori

Callies, who plays Lori, said that viewers who’ve read the comic series will see a whole new dimension to the Rick/Shane/Lori relationship on the show, but she thinks comics fans will be happy with it.  She sees all three characters as close and mentioned how AMC Walking Dead Executive Producer, Writer and Director, Frank Darabont, is a master of fleshing out compelling backstories. So look forward to seeing a different kind of character study than you see in the graphic novels (with all three actors confirming that we’ll be getting some childhood backstory flashback action with Shane and Rick).

That kind of talk plus the hunky piece of man candy that is Jon Bernthal pretty much equals a confirmation that Shane’s not going to die off as quickly as he does in the comic.  This appears to be a newly imagined Shane we’re dealing with here, but Bernthal also hinted that Shane will remain hateable and lunkish.

4. More views of NYCC 10

Don’t worry, we’re not going to spend the next five weeks going over reactions to New York Comic Con…probably just this post, our own wrap-up and whatever news fall-out emerges. Fun Fact #1: this year it’s been hard to find personal blog accounts of the show. Like San Diego, NYCC has become the province of a lot of professional bloggers and journos, so even a Google blog search comes up with lots of variations on “Marvel vs Capcom!”.

Fun Fact #2: even thought own our immediate reaction to the show was that it worked for what it was supposed to be, there has been a lot of complaints. This isn’t really surprising — there were a lot of rough patches in security, crowding, scheduling and more — but it shows that the crowd had high expectations for the kind of experience they were going to get, and when it fell short, they felt it.

Anyway, here’s a trip around the web starting with an actual con report by Gavok of 4th Letter. Like we said, not too many of these.

§ CNN has a very even-handed report tat covers the good and the bad and has a slideshow to boot.
201010130301.jpg

§ Steve Bunche has three posts worth of cosplay photos and Artist Alley shots. More here.

§ Scott Kurtz taks about the showdown that wasn’t:

Saturday evening was also supposed to be the night of the much anticipated debate between myself and Ted Rall. Plans were to keep the name calling to a minimum and try to really discuss the issues and see if we could come up with some solutions. But two days before the convention, Ted emailed to let us know he had double booked the weekend and was needed in Portland for a book signing. Honestly, it’s for the best. The debate is over. Digital is here. The business models are real, and people like Ted can choose to keep their heads in the sand about it if they want. They can rage against the machine for all the good it will do them. I think I’m pretty done with the arguments at this point.

§ Whitney Mathseon foundFive awesome comics.

§ A link to the Podcasting Panel.

§ Augie De Blieck has observations of the trenchant kind.

So that’s the folks who had a good time. Of which there were many. But some people just didn’t.

Reed Pop vp Lance Fensterman blogs about the show here, and owns up to the overcrowding and the disorganization. The comment thread afterwards has a LOT of complaints, from Keystone GUests John Romita Sr &Jr not showing up for their Sunday signing, to issues with over crowding, and the problem of whether the New York Anime Festival was shunted to the side or not.

5. NYCC 10: There were crowds

IMG_2076.JPG
While we consider NYCC a complete success from where we stand, it wasn’t without problems — mostly in security and crowd control. While we’re working on our full write-up, Evan Dorkin has some comments that give the other side:

Saturday however, was, for me, a bummer. I really wished I had stayed home. My signing went okay but I really regretted not scheduling it for Friday as DHC originally planned. It was a nice hour. The rest of the day I was mostly bored when not driven nuts by the over-crowded aisles, filled with too many inconsiderate folks walking with their heads down while texting or talking on phones, jerks stopping to talk or take pictures of cosplayers in the middle of the aisles (the larger cons really need to have a Pathetic Masturbators Photo-Op Area, because that shit’s just out of control), cosplayers stabbing people in the necks, stomachs and elsewheres with prop swords, spears, and whatever-the-fucks they’re carrying from Final Fantasy Infinity, oafs knocking into people with their backpacks and not even having the common decency to say “excuse me”, etc.

The show is a huge success, obviously, good for them, but it’s overstuffed, I mean, they have exhibitor tables right outside the friggin’ bathrooms, fer corn’s sake, and fate forbid a fire ever breaks out while the cattle drive is in the halls. I realize NYCC does not exist to be entertaining or even palatable to one Mr Evan Dorkin, I’m not asking for more art comics or more Godzilla events or more whatever for me, personally — and I’m not asking anyone to change anything, or even wishing they’d change anything — except how they handle the flow of human beings in the hall, and how they communicate to some of those human beings that they need to act responsibly and sensibly while at the event.

We’ll have more on this later.

6. NYCC 10: 3 1/2 days that changed the world

IMG_2110.JPG
It’s been a long year of change in the comics industry, and New York Comic Con feels like the end point of an arduous but rewarding journey. We were just doing a search for blogs posts about the show and already found fairly fascinating two think pieces that show the ascendance of nerd culture as a boon — or a threat depending on how you view it.

Simon Pulman has a blog called Transmythology, devoted to transmedia storytelling, and his take on the con presents a thoughtful view unencumbered by the kind of fretting most comics types have:

One final thing that struck me as strange about digital comics: apparently, Marvel views digital comics as a way to drive traffic back to the comic book store.  Its hope is that people will read a comic on the iPad, become intrigued by the story, and begin buying physical books; it even structures special offers around this concept.  I still cannot believe that this is actually Marvel’s business plan – I’m quite confused to be honest.  To me, they are saying to readers “now that you’ve enjoyed this conveniently accessible, digitally malleable version of the story, please drive to the comic book store to buy the physical copy of the next issue – for more money.”   That seems incredibly backward to me, and I’d love for somebody to explain to me why it’s not.

Beyond nailing the circular thinking behind a lot of the industry. Pulman was impressed by Artists Alley:

I have two general impressions from Artist’s Alley.  The first is that these creatives are in the same state as most of the representatives from the big brands: they know that digital and multi-platform storytelling are going to be important, but they have absolutely no idea how.  The second is that there are far more skilled artists than storytellers in the independent space.  Most of the comics I looked at featured exquisite artwork married with clunky dialogue, uninteresting plotting and (more often than you’d think) uncomfortable themes.  Therefore, I would suggest that seasoned storytellers have a great opportunity to partner with skilled artists to collaborate on something new – and great.

And then we have IGN’s Michael Thomsen with Medium Anxiety: Culture Shock at New York Comic Con — Thomson must have been really traumatized by the show because he found is cacophany of fandoms, images and ideas quite alarming:

While comic books are fundamental, they have evolved into one of the most obscure of all the forms of human creativity. Walking through the clustered halls of New York Comic Con, the East Coast’s biggest celebration of all things nerd, I can’t get away from the impression of a community stuck in a loop, speaking to itself in idioms that seem to have long ago lost their power. This is the world of cosplayers, high-detail miniatures, crates of old comics, and rows of new ons—most of which offer escapist parables in high fantasy, science fiction, spandex super powers, or reinterpretations of anthropomorphic manga cuties. These are the ugly stereotypes that give weight to the worst interpretations of “nerd” and “dork.” And yet, taking NYCC as a reasonable representation of what comics have to offer, the stereotype is more true than not. Comic books are juvenile, vulgar, mimetic, and fixated on escapist tropes of the most impersonal scale. That’s not all comics have to offer but it’s an ugly majority.

7. NYCC 10: Saturday Party Poop

There has never been a harder-partying comic con than NYCC 10. For those who can drag themselves out one more time, here’s tonight’s party poop report with three big parties:

201010091213.jpg

§ At Bergen Street Comics, Geoff Johns, Francis Manapul & iFanboy are throwing a big bash from 8 on.

§ The Rock Comic-Con takes place at 10:30 at Sullivan Hall but tickets are required

Ticket sales for Rock Comic Con! NYC’s Nerd Rock Festival are now underway. This comic book/sci-fi related rock concert event compliments the New York Comic Con and takes place Saturday, October 9th at 10:30pm at Sullivan Hall located in NYC’s West Village. The benefit show promises to be the ultimate ‘after party’ to the Comic Con weekend’s pop culture festivities with proceeds going to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Rock Comic Con 2010 marks the premiere showcase for the burgeoning artists and sub-genre known as ‘Nerd Rock’, which displays a fascination with “geek” pop culture such as comic books,sci-fi, video games and anime and often does so with significant doses of irony and humor.

Rock Comic Con features an array of hard rocking nerd bands headlined by Kirby Krackle, the Seattle based band best known for their comic book themed material and referred to as “geek rock perfection”by Wired magazine. They are joined by the hilarious H2Awesome! whose repertoire includes catchy and well-crafted tunes, including an upbeat punk song “Why So Serious” which sets to music Heath Ledger’s memorable Dark Knight dialogue, word for word. Fortress of Attitude packs their songs with comedic, but insightful lyrics ranging in topic from American Gladiators to sleep-away camps to one man’s unending love for his time machine, all utilizing the conventions of rock, indie and punk. Bedlam Rock brings their nerd-core hip-hop sound and sensibility to round out the evening.

Special Guests include YouTube sensation Rachel Bloom, who will be performing her hit, “F*ck Me, Ray Bradbury” live for the first time since it’s become an Internet phenom garnering well over 1 million views.

And Nerdcore rapper Adam WarRock who has gained a following on the Internet through co-hosting the War Rocket Ajax podcast, as well as getting attention for his songs Ira Glass and I Gotta Believe! (Scott Pilgrim Recap)

The event will be hosted by FUSE TVs Steven Smith, a comedian, VJ and nerd in his own right. (Daily Download,Steven’s Untitled Rock Show.)

On display will be The Covered Comic Art Exhibit, featuring work by comic book artists and their Comic Cover reinterpretations from .The Covered Blog.

Rock Comic Con will also feature a slew of professional cartoonists from DC Comics, Marvel Comics and indie publishers who will be painting live art throughout the night. The art will be auctioned off and proceeds will go to benefit the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of the First Amendment rights of the comics art form and its community of retailers, creators, publishers, librarians, and readers.

Rock Comic Con is sponsored by Comic Geek Speak, Comic News Insider, Evil Twin Comics, Indie Spinner Rack, Top Shelf Productions, and 12-Gauge Comics an

8. NYCC 10: Wayne promoted; Marvel cutting back titles?

It seems that the action kicked off early today at the Diamond retailer breakfast this morning, which due to its 8:30 start time was off limits for all the hard partiers we saw out and about last night.

As reported by various folks who got up early, it was anounced that Bob Wayne has been promoted to Sr VP of Sales from VP of Marketing and Sales. The announcement met with loud applause from the assembled retailers. With his long service at DC, Wayne is definitely one of the people who can provide continuity for the retail community as the new split-coast company rolls out. It was also announced that the sales and marketing team for print would remain in New York — which doesn’t necessarily mean that there won’t be other sales and marketing teams in LA for other aspects of the DC business.

Marvel also discussed their new $2.99 price point for some of the books coming out in January but didn’t discuss any details other than the fact that new books would be at the lower price, not existing titles.

They also mentioned that the January catalog would be smaller in terms of product. While Marvel has been rolling out tie-ins to THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA and other movie properties by the dozen, these books are not meeting with much retail or reader support.

While the price cuts announced by both Marvel and DC yesterday are popular moves, they are not without some potential pitfalls. If customers simply take it as a chance to save money, they’ll keep buying the same number of books, and profits will go even lower. It’s incumbent upon publishers and retailers to persuade their customers to take that $20 and buy 6 books instead of 5.  Marvel’s current flood of titles isn’t going to work if readers see them as filler.

The “Evolution of the Graphic Novel” panel we were on earlier was well-attended, given the rather distant location. GN Reporter’s John Hogan, Rich Johnson, B&N’s Jim Killen, B&T’s Jill Faherty and Muse Comics’ Amanda Emmert talked about general issues in selling books, including the need for accurate age ratings and promotion of prominent authors.

15. NYCC 10: Ben 10 on 10-10-10

201010070214.jpg
We haven’t been covering a lot of the media stuff at New York Comic Con but we’ll make an exception for Ben 10 because a) it was created by the underrated gang at Man of Action and b) it is doing a cool 10-10-10 promotion, and what better way to celebrate this special day?

Cartoon Network celebrates a landmark day for its iconic global franchise, Ben 10, online, on-air, with the fans and at stores with a special multi-platform promotion culminating on October 10, 2010, otherwise known as 10-10-10! Ben 10 has been one of Cartoon Network’s most successful original series since first premiering on the network in January 2006. The franchise has since spawned three animated series, one animated movie, two live-action movies, a widely-popular consumer products line and has captured the imaginations of viewers on a global scale.

On Sunday, 10-10-10, Cartoon Network will present a Ben 10: “Ultimate” Marathon from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. (ET, PT) leading up to an hour-long special premiere of two Ben 10: Ultimate Alien episodes from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. (ET, PT). Fans can get in on the action by entering to win the Ben 10 Ultimate Prize Pack by submitting codes that will appear in the bottom corner of the screen during the marathon to www.Ben10UltimatePrizePack.com from 3:00 p. m. – 11:59 p. m (ET, PT). The Grand Prize Winner will receive a cash prize, a framed leather Ben 10 jacket and a Ben 10 Prize Pack! Secondary prize winners will also be eligible for Ben 10 action figures, DVDs, video games and many other prizes. Results will be on-air and online.

Leading up to the special Ben 10: Ultimate Alien 10-10-10 event, starting on Monday, October 4, new robot versions of Ben 10: Ultimate Alien characters will be released each day online, including Rath, Armadrillo, Ultimate Echo Echo and Ultimate Big Chill. Also for the first time, Ultimate Humungousaur will be unlocked for fans to play! Cartoon Network TKO: Titanic Kungfubot Offensive, is a free real-time multiplayer game that lets fans challenge other players online with head-to-head fighting action using giant robot versions of favorite characters from shows such as Ben 10, Adventure Time and Generator Rex. Available to play now at http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/TKO.

During New York Comic Con (NYCC), the largest pop culture event on the east coast from October 8 – 10, Cartoon Network and Ben 10 fans will unite to celebrate 10-10-10.  Cartoon Network and Ben 10: Ultimate Alien will take over the registration lobby of the Jacob Javitz Center with the CARTOON NETWORK ULTIMATE ACTION LOUNGE, which will feature plasma televisions with Cartoon Network content, free giveaways, video games from D3Publisher (Ben 10 Ultimate Alien: Cosmic Destruction), photo-ops for fans and digital sampling stations. Then on Sunday, 10-10-10, NYCC attendees can celebrate Ben 10 day with the cast of Ben 10: Ultimate Alien. Fans will be treated to a never-before-seen episode of the series with voiceover dialogue performed LIVE by Yuri Lowenthal (Ben), Greg Cipes (Kevin) and Ashley Johnson (Gwen). Other panel highlights include a sneak peak at the new season of Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, cast Q&A, and a chance to win lots of Ben 10 Prizes!

As the long-standing master toy partner for the Ben 10 franchise, Bandai America is also getting in on the 10-10-10 action as it will rev up to the holiday season with its “Ben 10: Ultimate Alien Go-Kart Sweepstakes.” Beginning on 10-10-10 and continuing for 10 weeks leading into this year’s holiday season, consumers can enter for a chance to win an exclusive Ben 10 Mark 10-style go-kart, among other cool weekly prizes inspired by Cartoon Network’s top-rated, Emmy Award®-winning animated series, by visiting www.bandai.com/uasweepstakes.  The limited edition go-

23. NYCC: Team up with Maphook and The Beat to win prizes

MH_ComCon.png
While we haven’t been too wild about software that delivers an ongoing rss feed of your movements, when we were approached to look at the new location based social networking platform Maphook, we were more intrigued. Instead of just telling the world where you are and what you are doing, users collaborate to create a “story” about an event using “hooks” — tweets, photos, posts, scores, wikipedia entries, factoids and so on. It’s sort of localized social networking combined with journaling, which is why we like it. Instead of having to go all over the place and search for info, it’s archived in one spot.

The good folks at Maphook have even set up a special promotion just for Beat readers. It’s a little bit of a scavenger hunt. Sign up for Maphook — it’s available as a iPhone,/iPad app or on the web at www.maphook.com and then sign in at our five designated locations and be eligible for one of five nifty prizes specially chosen by The Beat from the exclusives available at the show.

Our idea: let’s create a special Beat-reader crafted record of this Year’s New York Comic-Con. If you see something funny, grab a photo and post it to the designated Maphook New York Comic Con category — you can link your Maphook account to Twitter so it will also Tweet so you don’t miss out on any of the drama action. Create a hook when you see something interesting or notable, or overhear the perfect quote, or see the perfect costume.

New York Comic Con is just too big for one blogger to cover — even one as “mighty” as the Beat — so we do what all superheroes do when they have a big task ahead — we team up!
