To celebrate the holidays we asked some of our favorite people in publishing what their favorite book was. Let us know in the comments what your favorite book is and be sure to check back throughout the week for more “favorites”.
Noa Wheeler is an assistant editor at Henry Holt Books for Young Readers.
I have never finished reading my favorite book. This may sound incongruous, but the truth is that any time I “finish” Jean-Paul Sartre’s The Words, I simply start it again. For many years, I have always been somewhere in the process of reading this quietly brilliant book. Sartre’s memoir is one of paradox: a dreamer’s stream of consciousness with an underlying strength, a distant narrative voice which ultimately paints an intimate self-portrait. (more…)

Poor Henry, I think he doesn't like the flash from our camera. The first thing he did when I started taking pictures this morning was to hide under the Nativity scene. By the way, he is 'dressed' for the day in his Christmas bandana.

NH is a far cry from California, as you can see from Sherry Rogers recent post on her blog.
Our leaves are almost all down and even the ones you see in this picture of our home are now on the ground. This was taken only a week ago so that Henry could share his new home picture with old friends in Tennessee. Those were the folks who created a loving foster home for Henry until we were able to find out about him and adopt him. Today was his first appointment with the groomer here in town. The groomers are wonderful people who also have a terrific Doggie Day Care for pet owners who need to work. Henry was so proud of his nicely trimmed nails and his bright blue bandanna. And CLEAN is just so good!
Here's Henry!
After a long wait for the transport from Tennessee to New Hampshire, Henry has arrived and has already made himself at home.

Henry... is a Beagle. Henry is currently being fostered in Tennessee. Henry is coming to New Hampshire. Henry is coming to our house to stay FOREVER! In about 8 days we will meet up with the transport that will be bringing a number of rescued dogs to their new owners up here in Northern New England.Visit their site at:Patriot Labs All Breed Rescue to find out more about the wonderful volunteers that work to find loving homes for rescued dogs.
Our first Beagle, ,Winston the Wonderhound, is the subject of the online story I try to update when I can. He was a wonderful adoptee from an animal shelter in NJ. We have missed him as you can imagine and it has taken us a long time to finally decide on bringing a new doggie into our home. Henry is not interested in hunting...neither are we, we just want to welcome him into our home and let him enjoy the beautiful lakes, woods, and mountains with us.
Our decision to adopt a rescued dog was an easy one for us. There are so many deserving pets out there that need good homes. If you are looking for a pet for yourself or your children, investigate your local or regional animal shelter and find the perfect match.

Ahhhh, Paris. Your lure is strong: art, food, nightlife, architecture. One could get caught up in your graces forever! Travel with us this month to the city of lights as we read The Ambassadors by Henry James. Since we are announcing the book a bit late, we will hold the discussion on Thursday, October 4th. It’s King Henry VIII’s birthday on June 23 and I have a confession to make: I’m a huge Tudor nerd. I think it’s the most interesting period in history, so much drama and intrigue, it’s the ultimate soap opera. (more…)

I’m a nature girl. Few things make me happier than spending a spring day climbing a mountain, or exploring a lake in a kayak, or walking the shoreline at the ocean… So when summer arrives, (especially on Fridays) I yearn to be away from my computer outside in the sun. Don’t get me wrong, I love the internet, but amidst all the voices online you can sometimes lose your own. In fact I once spend three WHOLE days away from the internet, away from phones and books and toilets, on a three day solo in Maine. Just me, a lake, my sleeping bag and a journal. It is a truly refreshing experience, learning to spend time with yourself. So, it may seem natural that Thoreau is one of my favorite authors.
Recently I found an Oxford book titled Walden Pond: A History by W. Barksdale Maynard, and I thought it might be nice to share an excerpt from it with you. Perhaps you will find time this summer to visit Thoreau’s refuge, or to spend time thinking in your own personal Walden Pond.
