Petition Background
The oil and gas industry has created a massive PR campaign to convince the public that fracking will create American energy independence, while working behind closed doors to open up export facilities to ship gas abroad. This would drive up gas prices for U.S. consumers and create huge oil and gas profits, all at the expense of U.S. communities.
And now, the industry is trying to use the recent crisis in Ukraine as leverage to get Congress to rubber stamp approvals for new export facilities, even though the gas would be sold to 158 World Trade Organization (WTO) countries on the open market. Bills to allow these exports have been introduced in the House (H.R. 6) by Cory Gardner (R-CO) and in the Senate (S. 2083) by Mark Udall (D-CO). However, the ploy is a complete sham by the oil and gas industry to take advantage of a foreign crisis.
Exporting natural gas spells disaster at all points. First, it requires more fracking – a process that is poisoning Americans’ water, air and health while dramatically increasing methane emissions in the atmosphere. Second, it entails enormous multiple football-field-sized facilities along our coasts to supercool gas to -259 degrees – facilities that are a huge energy sink and pose grave threats if they explode as they have in the past. Third, the liquefied gas must be shipped overseas in huge tanker ships, re-gasified, compressed, transported and ultimately burned. The climate implications of the entire process are extreme.
It is irresponsible to push for more fracking and an extremely dangerous export process that is contributing to climate change, leading to more global instability and in the long run, undermining any national security goals that proponents claim will be achieved. The real solution is to transition off of fossil fuels through proven clean energy solutions.

Over 20 years ago, Miguel Aparicio came to the United States when he was just 15 years old, following his grandmother to a better life in the United States. Now 38, Miguel is not the typical DREAMer because he is over the age that would qualify him to benefit from the DREAM Act. However, his story has inspired and transformed the lives of many young people, documented and not. Until April of 2009, when he was detained for allegedly running a school stop sign, Miguel had completed 12 seasons as a volunteer cross-country assistant coach. Along with his partner, the head coach Carlos Borja, they led the Phoenix Alhambra boys cross country team to a state championships in 2007, 2009 and 2010, as well as a state runner-up title in 2008 . The pair has also sent 10 athletes to college with academic and/or athletic scholarships since they first started coaching together.
The community loves Miguel so deeply that when he was told by the school district he longer could be assistant coach, both the head Coach Borjas, and the students, rallied together. Coach Borjas was fired for non-compliance and the students refused to run for another coach.
Although Coach Carlos was able to regain his position as the head cross-country coach, Coach Miguel was not allowed to continue volunteering with them.
What is worst, he is currently scheduled to be deported this Friday! If he is deported, every student and their family that was part of the Alhambra cross-country team would be forced to say good-bye to their coach and to some even a father figure.

I don't intend to use this blog as a platform for rants (although the temptation to just shriek what? you can not be serious! is often simmering beneath the surface...) but this is a petition I think we can all get behind because the EU has developed new regulations and the UK has yet to sign up to them. And it's especially relevant now because the Olympic Games are apparently going to be a wonderful money-making, misery-making opportunity for modern slave traders.
It doesn't bear thinking about, does it? But that's what we have to do.

Dear David Cameron and Nick Clegg,
Please guarantee the UK government opts in to the EU Directive on Human Trafficking to ensure that trafficking into and within the EU stops and that those involved are properly prosecuted. Please make sure that the UK opts in to new rules to help stop trafficking.
This petition has been organised by 38 Degrees and you can sign it by clicking on the title of this post. They are working with other organisations such as The Anti-Slavery International, the Independent on Sunday and ECPAT UK to convince the Coalition not to opt out of the new rules.

A bit about the organsiation behind it
I have only just heard about 38 Degrees (thanks to an email from a friend) but it was launched in May 2009, inspired by the impact of groups like MoveOn.org in the United States, GetUp.org.au in Australia and Avaaz.org around the world. These groups have used the internet to allow nearly 9 million people to voice their concerns and 38 Degrees is bringing the same campaigning approach to the UK, making it quick and easy for people to take action. I don't know if signing petitions or going on demonstrations achieves anything but I am convinced that it's better than doing nothing.

The US government has always been full of colorful characters. J. Edgar Hoover was no exception. Hoover was the founder of the present form of the
Federal Bureau of Investigation and was its director for an unprecedented 48 years. Hoover's leadership spanned eight presidential administrations, encompassed Prohibition, the Great Depression, World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War. From the beginning of his career with the FBI, Hoover was accused of exceeding and abusing his authority. He is known to have investigated individuals and groups because of their political beliefs rather than their suspected criminal activity as well as using the FBI for other illegal activities such as burglaries and illegal wiretaps. Hoover frequently fired FBI agents by singling out those who he thought "looked stupid like truck drivers" or he considered to be "pinheads." He also relocated agents who had displeased him to career-ending assignments and locations. A jealous J. Edgar Hoover maneuvered

Hoover was a lifelong bachelor, and there has been speculation and rumors that Hoover was homosexual, but no concrete evidence of these claims has ever been presented. It has also been suggested that his long association with
Clyde Tolson, an associate director of the FBI who was also Hoover's heir, was that of a gay couple. The two men were almost constantly together, working, vacationing, and having lunch and dinner together almost every weekday. Upon Hoover's death, Tolson was presented with the flag that draped Hoover's casket.
The most famous rumor that attached itself to Hoover was he was a cross-dresser. This is most likely an urban legend. Alleged photos of Hoover in drag engaging in gay sex were the key to his reluctant pursuit of organized crime. As long as "the mob" possessed these alleged compromising pictures, Hoover backed off. These photos probably don't exist, but it sure would be cool if they did.
This is an image from the comic story I mentioned earlier - Troll on the Rooftop. It was published a few weeks ago (you can find a link on my webpage) before which I had a running teaser on my blog.
For some reason I think this image is more glamorous than the one with the entire wedding ceremony in it. But fairies are glamour.
