This is a sneak preview of what I'm working on right now. I have some tweaking to do. Next I will finish some bugs and Pixie Bears to add to it in Photoshop CS3 (which I love). This is a really big piece! It's about 15x22 which is a lot of space to cover in multiple layers of color pencil! It's done with dry Caran d'Ache Supracolor watercolor pencils on Canson paper. They have a new product called Luminence that I can't wait to try.
I'm trying something new this time, I'm going over the sky with an almost dry brush to smooth it out, then I'll put another layer on top of that. For some reason the blues don't quite hide all the paper showing through. So far, it's working. Thank you to Nicole Caufield for giving me the idea (she's actually using a Neocolor underpainting).
I went on the 5th grade field trip to the San Jose Mercury News yesterday and got to meet their amazingly talented illustrator, Doug Griswold. I've been an admirer of his work since college, so it was a great treat! He was fantastic with the kids. He showed his process and had them guess what different articles were about by looking at his editorial illustrations. What fun! He really knew how to get them involved.
He's very excited and passionate about his work. He's been there for 25 years.
His informational graphics for the Pope's funeral. He's a big history fan, and does his own research on each project.
His series for the local hockey team, the Sharks.
Half the girls in the class have these shoes. Shoe options are pretty limited at our school. I guess they're expressing their individuality through conformity.

Your new piece looks beautiful. That IS a lot of work in colored pencil! Funny to see the converse sneaks as a shoe option. The tiny bit I can see of a skirt looks like a catholic school uniform. Having gone to catholic school from grade K-12 I would have killed to have those shoes as an option. In grade school it was only brown or navy blue pennies or loafers. Uggh!
I LOVE your garden illustration! How fun, whimsical and charming. Makes me want to jump onto the page and explore that fabulous world that you created. ;)
Your illustration is coming out so beautiful! Your work in colored pencil is really amazing. This is a great post. :o)
