Tonight I made Pad Thai for dinner. A few months ago my friend Sunaree who is Thai and her husband had my husband and I over for dinner and she cooked Pad Thai for us. I have to tell you it was the most amazing and delicious experience. I didn't take a photo of dinner as it was the first time we had dinner together and I thought it would be rude. The food was incredible and the presentation so colorful. Her husband loves her cooking too and is her perfect match.
Yesterday Sunaree brought me some rice noodles and I tried my first hand at it. I bought a sauce mix ( I know, not very original) however I am going to try making the sauce on my own when I have more time. I only have about an hour in the evening during the week so cooking quickly is often a must. My husband and I had seconds and we'll both have some left over for work tomorrow. Yum!
This is the closest photo to what Sunaree served us for dinner that night (an exceptional photo of Pad Thai I might add!). Pim used a few different ingredients than Sunaree did and I used a packet of sauce picked up at the store which my husband and I both found quite good. I also substituted the shrimp for chicken and left out the egg as we are watching our cholesterol which is a good thing but fresh shrimp with this meal is incredible. I'll save the times to have it with shrimp when Sunaree is doing the cooking. Visually, hers looks so much more vibrant.
I can't say enough about Sunaree, she is an amazing cook and so sweet too, I can't wait until she cooks for us again. After all, why have a copy when you can have the real thing! :)

Meet my cat, Norbert. Sure he looks innocent enough. A little blank behind the eyes, perhaps, but he doesn't look like a killer does he?
Well he is. He's a book killer.

Meet my cat, Norbert. Sure he looks innocent enough. A little blank behind the eyes, perhaps, but he doesn't look like a killer does he?
Well he is. He's a book killer.
I reviewed Jane Yolen and Heidi E.Y. Stemple's perfectly lovely Sleep, Black Bear, Sleep (illustrated by Brooke Dyer) for Book Buds yesterday (link should be up soon) and what did this cat do?
Take a look. He shredded two pages out of this beautiful book.
He's always shredding things, so when I heard him ripping through yet another paper product yesterday, I wasn't surprised. Oh well, I thought, there goes the kindergarten newsletter.
But this! This is a new low in the life of Norbert.
Anyone in the market for a cat?

Aww, he's so beautiful, though. How can you not forgive him with a face like that!
He gets away with a lot because of that face, Sheila. Darn cat.
Too funny! Of course, I am a card carrying member of the club whose members have and love animals who:
1. have little redeeming social value, except as love objects
or
2. Are smarter than most humans, but full of hubris and bad attitude
or
3. Are dumber than dirt
or
3. Are destructive and proud of it
or
5. Are in serious need of analysis
I.E: my French Bull dog, Bitty. Still, I like life with 'em. Poop and all.
This particular cat is a #3. It's part of his charm. We all feel so bad for him, 'cause he's SLOW. Every time a member of the human family heads into the kitchen, he bowls you over and whines for food. Even if you were just there 2 minutes ago! Even if you've been in 10 times in the past five minutes. Then he looks in his bow and, surprise!, there's food. Poor guy.
Our elder stateswoman, Zoe, is and has always been smarter than we are. Sharp as a tack.
Oh, that would just outright piss me off, but then my cats are now simply cats to me, now that I have children, and my patience for their antics is now running out, whereas before it was all cute (cat-lovers everywhere right now are cursing my name, and rightfully so).
Anyway, Norbert looks exactly like our Lyra. Gorgeous color.
Our cats are always kneading dough on our carpet (no comment, so as to not raise the hackles of the aforementioned cat lovers everywhere), but I've never heard of a cat shredding a book before. My condolences . . .
Wicked, wicked kitty. I live with two bad cats who shred plants, not books, so while my tomes are safe, our rooms are bare of green things. This statement excludes my bedroom, though: when I was pregnant, I wanted a room like the Goodnight Moon room. We only ever got as far as the painting part. Um, I've changed my mind now.
However, it's probably a good thing our cats are not artistically inclined.
Jules: I was pretty PO-ed, but the problem with cats is you can't punish them! You can shame them on your blog, though :)
Alkelda: No plants for us either. Nor anything on the walls with this Norbert. He'll shred calendars and paintings too. (That book is Out of Control!)
Aw, he's beautiful, Kelly. I love that color.
We can't have plants or leave out plastic bags because the big orange tabby tries to eat them, but only if he spare the time off of plucking the carpet or the furniture.
We now have several bird feeders out back, so he has destroyed--okay, marred--our sliding screen door trying to get at them. As Junior says, "Riley has a bird problem."
Wow, so it's not just my dog who eats books!
"...you can shame them on your blog," great line. And bad, bad kitty.
My kitties don't shred things, but they love to throw up on stuff - which is also loads of fun. One of the cats loves to bring us little "presents" as well. Ah, the joys of being owned by a cat.
Aw, come on--it's just one book. (This time.) And he is so handsome. And obviously entertaining.
This may not be the time to say it, but don't you appreciate that every one of your pets gives you something to smile about every single day?
I'm sure Riley does have a bird problem, Susan. Too bad screen doors are so expensive!
You are not alone, Lisa! I will add that you expect such nonsense from a dog...but from a cat?
MR: it's all I have, like a said. Oh, and no worries. My cats throw up too! NO presents, thank goodness, since they're indoor folk.
Robin: I do, I do. Ever if I also want to strangle them.
We are leaving here in a month or so and have to leave our cat behind - IF we don't find a home for him, then we will have to pay a visit to the vet...
Very sad, he has been with us for 12 years but he is no longer able to travel with us. It will break our hearts to leave him!
LLR: That's so, so sad!!
He should star if there's ever a movie version of Michele Jaffe's Bad Kitty, no?
Hey -- I see you on faculty at the August SCBWI conference. Which means we'll get to meet up. I am so going this year.
I don't know about Norbert's acting abilities. He's very LIMITED, shall we say, and also unfortunately pear-shaped.
YAY!! I can't wait to meet you Kelly.
We have a pear-shaped black kitty. I call her a "Waddle Kitty", and wrote her a poem by the same name.
August will be fun!
Yup, my dog is a number 3, too: Dumber than dirt. The irony is that she is the first dog I have owned that was not a mutt, and for all her "breeding" she is just plain stupid.
She is also badly in need of a doggie shrink, but she is too dumb to benefit.
I don't mean to sound flippant, but I do love the image of a cat going beserk on a book, shredding it to bits.
Would you be opposed to me sending over an issue of Kirkus?
I would sign it:
"Dear Norbert, go to town on this.
With all my love,
Barbara "
Oh, Norbert would shred that baby up so fast, Barbara! Just leave it open to the offending page on the floor and he'll go to town.
Bad, bad Norbert !!
He'd have received a severe scolding from me, had he been mine. (We scold our cat, Shade - and boy does she hate it ! Her ears go back and she slinks or runs away so fast!)
Mind you, she's never (touch wood) shredded a book - chewed through modem wires, yes, but not shredded books !
I'm sorry, but that post made me laugh so hard! I'm sorry about the book! I hope the cat never does that again, but it did make for an awfully funny blog post.
He is bad, Michele. Bad bad cat.
Thanks, Katie ;) Something good had to come from this experience!
Have a look at this cat :

Norbert looks like my Agrippa, King of the Jungle.
http://pics.livejournal.com/lectitans/pic/00005d61
Agrippa used to live with me but as he was feral he decided he liked it outside better, and he now rules the woods behind my boyfriend's house and generally avoids people. He's a naughty kitty, too. He shattered an entertainment unit glass door, ruined many clothes by spraying them, and generally behaved in a manner you expect of a dog, but not a cat.
LLR: My cat does this too. I lock him in the bathroom when I'm printing :)
Kimberley! Norbert does look like Agrippa!
I'm a little worried that our new kitten, Zelda, is going down that road...she's already keen on tissues and plastic bags!
