A couple more spreads from my travel themed Moleskine. It's a tale of two drawings. A game of two halves. Or something like that. The drawing above is of some bouquet garni I bought in Lyon. Now, I know some twigs and sticks wrapped in leaves isn't going to float every bodies boat, but it does mine.
I enjoyed this drawing, loved the subject, colours and the textures and I like to think it shows.
In contrast, the sea anemones, below, turned out to be quite the opposite. Although, the subject is very beautiful I couldn't get a handle on it. It really should have been lovely - gorgeous shapes, amazing textures, patterns and colours - but I just couldn't make it work. I end up getting so frustrated when I cannot achieve on paper what I see in my head. I didn't enjoy this one, at all.
And, I think that shows too.
Anyway, enough moaning. You can see the rest of my travel moleskine HERE.

So, as I said, some brand spanking new drawings from my travel Moleskine. Ah, I just love those sketch books so much. That beautiful smooth cream paper. Plus, of course, it's a heavyweight paper which means it can just about withstand all my obsessive cross hatching. I don't think there is anyway you can improve the Moleskine product - although I'd love them to add a bigger size paper size, and perhaps a nice bright white paper to their range. Not that I'm complaining. I just love these books.

Ooops. Apparently gold pencil does not look anything like it should when you scan it.
I've had a kind of impromptu holiday that has involved a huge amount of walking. Walking in unsuitable shoes. It seems, I, without fail, always wear totally unsuitable shoes for every occasion. Over my weekend break this has included wearing the tiniest little ballet pumps, with an ever increasing hole in the sole, for eight hours around a theme park in the rain and a pair of mini kitten heels around a cobbled street village. Ouch.

Now that I'm getting back into the swing of things I also want to get back to updating my children's book on a blog too. Unfortunately that's one of those things that gets pushed down the old priority list when time is short. That's OK though. I've been living with this book for the best part of two decades, so it's not like I'm in any rush to get it finished. And, anyway, I kind of like it that way. It's having plenty of time to simmer whilst waiting for the right publishing deal to come along.
So, if you want an explanation for the rather strange drawing above then you'll have to tootle on over there. Enter the weird and, frankly, worrying world that's in my head by clicking HERE.

One thing you may not know about me is that once I caught the biggest Goldfish in the world. Well, I sort of caught it. One day Grandpa and I were out fishing. Well, Grandpa was fishing. I don't fish. I couldn't handle the guilt of it. So, I was just there - thinking and day dreaming. I put my hand over the side of the boat and something bit my finger. I thought I'd imagined it at first, but then it happened again. Then I saw Henry. Henry the fish, that is. Although he wasn't called Henry then. I'm not sure he even had a name. Well, the bite on the finger, it was more of a nibble if I'm honest, was actually a cry for help. I could see he had a badly broken fin. So I took him home to recuperate in my garden pond. Actually, I say garden pond but, in fact, I have a lake at the end of my garden. There he lived happily for 57 years. When he died I used my experience as a part time taxidermist to stuff and mount him. Then I drew him. Obviously.

Once again I need to say a great big thank you to you all - for your response to my last post and to the great feedback. It's all much appreciated, and I still have many of you to get back to. I'll get around to it ASAP.
As I said then, I have been meaning to start this new 'book blog' for a long time, but I continued to procrastinate and over think things and then procrastinate some more. Well, not anymore. So, if you are wondering exactly what this is a drawing of, then pop over to my new blog (yikes! I'm nervous) and find out.
While you are there you might, perhaps, who knows, I dunno, if you fell like, maybe, want to start following that blog?
Anyway, I'd love it if you would join me. You can take a look at my new blog HERE.

Well, I'm back. After a visit to the homeland it's back to business. And, I mean it this time, I'm just itching to draw draw draw (although saying it is usually a mistake, it means I won't draw for a month). No, no, I really am in the mood for drawing.
And it's a new me that returns. A new diet and fitness regime. I'm giving up the chocolate and the vino and am going to get my shit together (again). I'm all inspired. Seeing things with new eyes. Like this. I'd never considered drawing a cork before. But you know when an object suddenly surprises you with it's unexpected beauty and you just have to draw it? Yeah? Well, that's what happened here. I'd never noticed how lovely a cork could be before.
Not half as lovely as a nice Claret though.

You know, I'm in split minds about New Years resolutions. Yes, I do believe that possibly they are a way of setting yourself up for failure. However, last year, with the help of my very talented friend, Caryl Hart, I found out the value of writing a business plan. Huh? Well, in some ways, a business plan and New Years resolutions are pretty similar.
Anyway, I thought I'd go ahead and set out a few drawing aims for the year.
One of those aims is to go in search of my perfect Mod drawing.
The 1960s are my absolute favourite time in history. I'm always inspired by the Mod movement. My love of it started with those 60s British black and white films and grew deeper through my fathers record collection. The style, the clothes, the music, the art, I love everything about it. It's always there, in the backseat of my mind, and has been since I was a kid. I think there's something important about those things you got into when you were a kid. Something authentic, maybe. So I want to make a drawing that reflects that. A drawing that I feel really pleased with. I have a strong idea, so I'll be researching it. Lots. Through my pens, of course.
What does all that have to do with desert boots? Well, for those not in the know, they were part of the uniform of any self respecting young Mod.
So, that's one of my drawing resolutions for the year. I'll be setting out the rest, post by post, over the next couple of weeks.

There seems to be one issue dominating my life at the moment. Money. Cash flow to be precise. It's on my mind all the time. If it's not on my mind I find my mind wondering back to it, time and time again. I wake up in the middle of the night thinking about. It's always there.
I'm sure I'm not the only one. And, I guess, anyone trying to start a small business, in this financial climate, will know how this feels. The frustrating thing is knowing that all I really need is an injection of cash to take my business to the next level. And, I'm not talking about a lot of money (in the big scheme of things).
Even more frustrating is knowing that cash flow is the single most important reason why many businesses fail - regardless of how good the business is. But, when you've exhausted all avenues it's hard to know where to go next. Banks aren't lending, investors seem to want a huge chunk of your business to even consider getting involved.
There are so many things I want to do, but I don't have the finances to move this thing forward. But, I can't go back either. Not after investing so much time and energy to get here. And, I can't go back because now I know that illustration is my calling.
So what next? Think creatively, I suppose. Now, that's something I know I can do.
(Also, VERY interested to hear of anyone elses experiences on this subject. Cheers, my dears.)

Bowl of chips and malt vinegar, Vanilla Kitchen, Tideswell.
I love Tideswell village. Recently I've been making the trip at least once a week to do some drawing. I love drawing so much. I want to keep learning. I want to learn how to draw buildings and landscapes. And, for me, there's no better place than Tideswell. It's a gorgeous village. Hopefully, one day soon, I'll show you some of the drawings I have made there. Drawings, that is, of the views, rather than the things I am comfortable drawing. Like chips.

Port Meirion, in North Wales, is one of my most favourite places ever. If you get the chance to visit then do so. I can't recommend it enough. It's such a surreal and unexpected place. Seeing it for the first time is just amazing. A bit like driving down into Tobermory and seeing the main street for the first time. But, hey, that's another drawing.
Port Meirion was the dream and vision of Clough Williams Ellis. A fabulously eccentric architect. If you should ever visit be sure to take the whole day there. Because, not only is there the spectacular village to see, but there's also the surrounding woodland, which is full of little surprises including follies and a Victorian pet cemetery.
Like Elvis, Marilyn, Lennon, John Peel and Bob Ross, Clough Williams Ellis is one of those people I'd love to have known. Apart from dreaming up this amazing place, and then making it a reality, his architectural drawings are just too stunning to be true. I have them on print, postcards, and even on a fridge magnet.
Now, this isn't my greatest drawing. I don't like it much at all, but it does make me smile. Amongst the postcards I've bought, at Port Meirion, there is one of the man himself. When I attempted to draw it, though, I thought 'it doesn't even look remotely like CWE'. Then I realised what had happened. I drew it whilst watching Curb Your Enthusiasm, and somehow I drew Larry David instead!
Haha. Now that makes me smile.

Six pairs of socks on a radiator.
Soon I will be leaving my home of eight years. I've been trying to get stuff sorted out. Washing and packing things that I won't need or use until I find my new home. This kind of readjustment is difficult for everyone to deal with, I know. For a sensitive artistic type it's nervous breakdown material. I'm hoping that the turmoil will provide fuel for drawing. Instead of being a distraction.
Yesterday I washed all my socks. Turns out I have over thirty pairs. How? Why? Because, I only ever where the stripey blue, the plain brown or the stripey brown ones. I don't think I've ever worn one of these six. Ever. Now that's obscene.

I've come to the conclusion it must be down to the pencil sharpener. It doesn't happen ever with graphite. And, as it would be a bit of a coincidence if every single colour pencil I own (from many different brands) were snapped before I'd bought them, I think it has to be the sharpener. So any pencil sharpener advice would be very welcome. The type of sharpener you use? The brand? How long they last? There's a fiver in it, for you. Cheers, folks.

Everyday matters #200. Draw something lucky.
It's been so long since I did an Everyday Matters challenge, so today I thought I'd have a go at the latest one which is 'draw something lucky'. This little Welsh pixie charm is supposed to be lucky. That, of course, is if you believe in luck. I don't.

I'm calling this one done. When I started this drawing, and posting it step by step, I said that I had no idea where it was going. I must admit that was not completely true. I actually believed that what I was doing was taking THIS 'air mail' drawing out of my sketchbook and reworking it onto paper. So throughout, as I was laying down the layers of blue ballpoint, in the back of my mind I was expecting to make the final post the one where I'd change the whole mood of the drawing by adding the red. However, the drawing had a mind of it's own and took me somewhere else completely.
I can't tell you how much I love that. How a drawing, or creative practice in general, makes you the passenger on a journey. I've been wondering at what point this one changed direction, from the original idea. Where it turned down a side street. It could have been the slight turquoise-y colour of one of the ballpoints that changed things. It could have been the mood I was in or the music I was listening to. It could have been the calling card that came through the door or the hair band I found. Of course, it was all those things.
I don't know how I feel about the finished piece. I think it's over worked. I'm really annoyed about the shade of blue that I made the shadow in the bottom right hand corner. But hell, right now I want to post it and move on to the next one. 'Cause right now it's telling me it's done. Finished. Finito.
(I also promise I've finished with the Paul Weller references. Now where's that Joni lyric book....)

These are a couple of drawings I did a some time back, but decided not to post. Frankly, I wouldn't be posting them now if I had anything else to share. Do you find that sometimes a day, or a week, can have a theme running through it? Today the theme, for me, was books. Books, books, books. Which is another reason for digging out these two old drawings. I started the day clearing out my bookshelves and I'll end it by sharing these two books with you.

I don't want to keep harping on about drawing funks, but I've had yet another frustrating week. I have realised what the trouble is. A friend of mine always says that I am a bubbling cauldron of creativity, and I have to admit that is a good description of how I feel. Usually the ideas are coming through so thick and fast that I don't always have time to catch them. The ones I do grab are added to a list that's as long as my arm. The last few weeks that hasn't been happening. Even my list looks uninspiring and I wonder whatever made me think they were good ideas in the first place. I am looking at things and willing them to become subjects. Forcing them, in fact.
The good news is, though, last night I lay awake until the early hours (or is that late hours?) as ideas and potential drawings refused to let me sleep. Now I just need to find my butterfly net.

I still haven't completed a drawing in the last week, I've lost my...erm...*cough*...drawing bug. But, when I was making my last post, and uploading the photos, I remembered this little drawing (above) that I did quite sometime ago. I didn't post it back then because it just looked so small and, er, pathetic (this being less harsh on myself is going very well).
It is one of the colour boxes you can see in the photos from the last post. The orange one. Obviously. I'm also posting the red and green ones -which you may have seen before - so that little orange one doesn't feel so lonely (and pathetic).
These container were all from the Body Shop and once were filled with their gorgeous body butters. From top to bottom; tangerine, pomegranate and avocado. The smell still lingers too, which is a nice surprise when you open the box. I wish this blog was Scratch and Sniff because these drawings smell gorgeous.

Just a couple of driving drawings. Obviously, I wasn't drawing whilst driving. That would just be dangerous. Although, it would be quite a skill. The car is a good place to draw for the shy. I absolutely cannot draw out in public, so the car is the closest I get to drawing outdoors. I have tried drawing al fresco and I hated it. I am just too uncomfortable with it. I am British, after all. I'm far too self conscious. And a recluse. Hey, we all have our own neurosis.

oh my gosh! I am jumping up and down in glee at how often you are posting!! I love the Garni, even though I have NO idea what it is. I must go look it up :)
Lovely...as always.
It looked as though you had a lot of fun with your drawings. Absolutely beautiful! Lovely layout!
I have read your article and not as it says you can not get out what goes on your head on your own writing paper how great our luggage and the beautiful graphics and qualify you to not fight and the seas and travel
I love the Garni. Gorgeous drawing, great layout. Hard to believe its pen...it almost has a coloured pencil appearance to it.
I think the anenomes are beautifully drawn, but I think they lose something in the layout. Perhaps they might shine a bit more if there were fewer on the page...perhaps they compete too much with each other just now?
Just my little opinion. As always, your work it brilliant and I have no room to talk...:\
Ah, that makes me feel better, that you can't be perfect all the time! Love the bouquet garni, shame about the anemones but sometimes that's the way it goes. Perhaps drawing so many was what gave you the difficulty although I can totally see why you chose the composition.
Maybe it was just a moment without the "go" for it.
Les bouquets garnis are beautiful!!!
They look like sea urchin shells, not anemones...
I love your drawings!
The bouquet garnis are thoughtfully drawn indeed - I always like the prosaic objects in life made beautiful when seen through another's eyes. You have been a bit hard on yourself with the sea urchin shells but as you say, your heart was not in it, so there I guess there is not so much detailed lined-work. - Wait a minute, that last line but one is pretty nice
I love seeing your posts, thank you for sharing them.
Thanks, folks.
I probably am wrong about them being sea anemones - I'm no marine biologist that's for sure! I'm not wrong about the drawing, though. I still dislike it. A lot.
It's really good to hear your thoughts. Thanks. I just thought I'd go ahead and post something that is not at all good. Even though it makes me cringe. Apparently, that'll help me grow.
Cheers, my dears.
Dawn, they are little bundles of herbs to put use in stews and casseroles and stuff. In this country they come in, what can only be described as, teabags. I, of course have never used them in cooking. I just like to look at them.
My boat is well and truly afloat, love the bouquet garni drawings. Great textures and colours, I can see why you were drawn to them...
I love it that you'll post sketches you aren't personally in love with; it's difficult for any artist to do that, turn off the "self editor", that sort of thing. Furthermore, when I first looked at the page, it was the urchin/anemone/sea creatures that drew me in -- funny how that works. Made me want to go tidepooling.
Great Andrea! That's the real sense of an artist: sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't... ;-)
