It is no secret that India-Japan relations have been on a strong positive trajectory over the past 18 months. Soon after taking office in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made Japan his first foreign destination outside of India’s immediate neighborhood and while in Tokyo, he and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe upgraded the India-Japan relationship

Set on a huge continental stage, from Europe to China, By Steppe, Desert, and Ocean covers over 10,000 years, charting the development of European, Near Eastern, and Chinese civilizations and the growing links between them by way of the Indian Ocean, the silk Roads, and the great steppe corridor (which crucially allowed horse riders to travel from Mongolia to the Great Hungarian Plain within a year).

this piece was a commission from a friend of mine whose daughter i taught a few years back. a bot more about their story

but for a good reason. :)
have been super busy working on a special commission for the family of a little girl i once taught almost ten moons ago. (yikes, feeling old!)
the mom came to me asking for a custom painting based on the gorgeously illustrated book entitled, "
motherbridge of love". in a nut shell, it's a sweet book about adoption...east meets west (u.s.a. and china). well, i couldn't have been happier to put my spin on parts of that beautiful book.
just about wrapping up this painting this week and i'm so looking forward to presenting it to them. such a lovely mother and adorable daughter, they are....:)

i don't usually post full sketches until after my paintings are done, especially commissions....but because this was a request from the wonderful woman/mother who commissioned me in the first place, well i couldn't say no. :)
7/8 years ago i taught a really sweet little girl who was adopted into the arms of a really great lady. she reached out to me wanting a painting based on the illustrations in the beautiful book entitled,
Motherbridge of Love...a custom painting (in my style) to represent the merging of cultures, ethnicities and, of course, the unconditional love that will forever envelop that very special little girl (who is not quite so little anymore-6th grade already?!) for a lifetime to come.
it's always a pleasure to take on any commission as i am always humbled and appreciative for the opportunity to have someone trust in my creative visions. to me, there is no greater compliment.
The debut feature from Light Chaser Animation now has the backing of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba.

Fire and collapse in Bangladeshi factories are no longer unexpected news, and sweatshop scandals are too familiar. Conflicting moral, legal, and political claims abound. But there have been positives, and promises of more. The best hope for progress may be in the power of individual contracts.

Lao (Laozi) Tzu is credited as the founder of Taoism, a Chinese philosophy and religion. An elusive figure, he was allegedly a learned yet reclusive official at the Zhōu court (1045–256 BC) – a lesser aristocrat of literary competence who worked as a copyist and archivist. Scholars have variously dated his life to between the third and sixth centuries BC, but he is best known as the author of the classic Tao Te Ching (‘The Book of the Way and its Power’).

Looking forward to hearing about your experiences in Beijing, Torsten! The air there can be hard to breathe when dust storms or temperature inversions trap smog over the city. It would be fascinating to attend the show, and see if North American companies take advantage of this market.
Well, unless someone sponsors me, I won’t be visiting China for awhile.
Gail Simone did have nice things to say about the recent Shanghai show, which had 14,114 attend the inaugural show.
I will, however, be attending the first Vienna Comic Con, spending my Thanksgiving in Central Europe. Coffee! Beer! Wine! Chocolate! Comics!
