For as long as I can remember, parents and teachers were always saying, "You've got to learn reading, writing, and arithmetic if you're going to make it in school, and beyond." Not a bad list, although, they definitely should have included science. The point is, these were considered the basics; the bedrock foundation for learning and achieving.
These days, I would argue, it is just as important for young children to learn their 3-C's - Common Sense, Common Courtesy, and Civility. It is way too late to wait and try to teach these vital skills at adult seminars. These important life lessons have to begin as early as possible and reinforced as much as possible if they are to take hold.
The 3-C's give a youngster a chance to mature into a successful adult. Using Common Sense in problem solving isn't just a good idea - it's a necessity. Showing others Common Courtesy by showing up on time and following through on tasks, speaks to teamwork and accomplishing goals. Civility is the key to communication and connection without confrontation.
Given the complex nature of the issues facing families, communities and nations, we had better find a way to communicate and problem solve. Getting mired in angry confrontation and personal attacks may make for 24-hr headlines, but it does little to advance a common cause that can benefit our lives and the lives of our children.
So let's start with the children. Why don't we begin by celebrating their good behavior, caring, and kindness? We can do more to showcase the wonderful contribution children make, and can make in their families and in their communities. By doing more of that maybe, just maybe, we will teach a few adults to modify their behavior and work harder to be better role models for their children!
